Rumour Has It / Clueless
« on: February 21, 2014, 11:40:33 am »
something to amuse while the server is still up to compliment the ongoing search for the toranite treasure. Brualot the Investigator pauses at the Silver Buckle to make a public announcement. Clueless! you may be but not for long for the cat is out the bag as a result of a theft of confidential material  I must open up my invrstigation to everyone. As it has become a real race against time. Let me explain. An art collector who was seeking the entire collection of the disturbed artist Overan xious, three items in total lost to history in the hands of his cult followers who were frankly , bad, has offered a reward. There are few clues to these works of arts current location. But I will give you them and encourage you to gather them before other evil hands can find them for their is a reward for the finding.Inbeed the Interesting, a prominent villan fled to Miritrx to hideout with associate bandits. He was always studying creatures around his vicinity and it is said he was killed near his lair and turned out of the abode to watch from outside the walls and look over the creatures he once studied. His head being the artists first work of art. He made a bust using parts of his very head.  The second work of art, an enchanted doll was taken by a warrior Ambi Tious of Leringard who was no stick in the mud and had loftier ambitions to rule over an army of undead. But in fact was never heard of again. Of the third piece a harp, prone to make terrible and haunting sound it is said It was taken by a Dwarf to Prantz. There it seems to have vanished but for one line in a song I have foundNorth of Rye he ran till headless, and in the dark he cried, dont let the black get me down.Little enough to go on of course, but the game is afoot. The patron seeking the goods has offered the winners the services of mercenaries subject to negotiation for their own ..tasks.To complicate things each art is said to point towards the hidden location of the now dead artists own stash of treasure!//have fun.. clocks ticking....this may be a good race between good and evil over the weekend, grab a group and get hunting!

Rumour Has It / Rumors around Center
« on: February 01, 2014, 07:37:12 pm »
"Did you hear about what happened in Center?""Ach, you're going to have to be more specific than that.""Well, I've heard of strange things before, to be sure, but it's said that one man started to glow purple eyes and the winds picked up all around him with lightning just crackling around him, and another young woman had fiery red hair.  No- really- her hair looked like fire and her eyes were glowing.  I think she might've even set the grass on fire where she walked."The second man groans, "Either I need another drink or I need to stop drinking altogether."The first man chuckles, "Aye, maybe, but I heard she was asking some folks about a human adventurer named Kyle something, and a gnome named Zup.  You ever heard of them?"The second man shakes his head.  "Nope.  But I'm a bit shocked it wasn't a gnome exploding or something."The first man laughs and orders them both another round of ales.

Guilds and Councils / Attention: Guilds and Organizations
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:17:25 pm »
Want to create an icon for your organization to be displayed as a badge for members under their profile?

The icon must be 32x32px and preferably having a black background unless the entire image takes up the 32x32 in which case the background is irrelevant. Please reply and attach the image in this thread.

Here's an example shot of some of my "badges" on the new system.

Also please note you no longer need to apply for membership to specific deity based forums or the druid one. The system will automatically know you have a character who follows that deity (provided your deity is correctly entered upon creation or a GM has set your deity).

The Silver Buckle / Haute in the City: A Silver Buckle Event
« on: January 02, 2013, 04:03:21 pm »
Fashion is ephemeral, dangerous and unfair. It is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality.

Andrew Reid hosts a fashion show at the Silver Buckle.  Come model your finest couture.  Judging will be done on the outfit, not the body underneath it.  Audience invited to vote for their favorites in three categories.  One judge still wanted.

Create in cloth, leather or metal.  Mix media.  The possibilities are endless.

Awards in the amount 2000 True for best female (judged), best male (judged), audience favorite (female), audience favorite (male), and Best of Show.

Winning outfits may be purchased with barter credit (with agreement of designer) by the Angels Guild, to be sold as exclusive original designs in our Port Hempstead Fields shop.

No dark elves.  Orc and goblin bloods by recognition only*.  Giant kin okay.

//This is an ideal way for a newer character to make some quick coin and (possibly, no promises) get their rp xp switch turned on.  The new loom is fun.  Get a cheap outfit and play.  Create, invent, reinvent new combinations of what you already own.  Improvise.  Become more creative.  Not because you have to, but because you want to.  Evolution is the secret for the next step.

*Characters known and accepted by Andrew, Jetta, Elohanna, or by petition from a Silver Buckle renter.

Layonara Server / Bonus XP Week....ish
« on: December 17, 2012, 11:34:38 pm »
Do I have your attention?  *grins*

It's time again for one of our famous bonus XP events.  Here's the details:
 • Begins on Saturday, December 22, 2012 *
 • 50% more XP from combat
 • 100% more XP from GM-led quests/events, RP rewards and Auto XP
 • Ends on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 *
* Start and end times will depend on when I get to it

Bear in mind it is the holidays, and GM availability will be subject to other obligations first, but I've gotten assurances from at least some of our GMs for scheduled and impromptu events and the like.

Rewards for RP are rated higher than combat, so remember to make time for it.  There have been several new characters lately from new and old players alike, so hopefully there will be some good opportunities for all.  Old faces are always good as well, of course. Make something happen!

Layonara Server / On difficulty, randomness and changes
« on: December 08, 2012, 11:21:46 am »
All,

This post is born of a recent bug report thread which began to stray into a debate. The topics raised are something I seem to have to address on a regular basis, so here I go again.

For context, the debate that tried to start was over "random" spawns and apparently disproportionate, unexpected challenges.

There's really no such thing as a "random" spawn from a design  standpoint.  The closest thing we could have is where there are more  candidate creatures that could spawn than the maximum number of  creatures that could spawn (i.e. 10 choices but only 5 slots), but even  then the spawns follow a set of rules according to the parameters set in  the spawn trigger itself.  Those rules are set by NWN. We presently have no meaningful control over how they appear; we can only make suggestions.

Besides this fact, the world changes from time to time and there  won't always be warning or notice.  Deal with it.  The development and  GM teams will do their best to make sure that the new challenge is not  disproportionately overwhelming beyond the intended challenge, but we  are under no obligation to give anyone a detailed list of what changed.   We've never done that and we're not going to start now.  Unless an area  goes from relatively easy to ridiculously impossible, in which case we  probably would provide some sort of advisory, there may be no  warning when something changes, and there will almost never be any sort of detailed list of what changes.

Remember though, this is not a  casino; we don't have a vested interest in our players losing. People have mentioned how it's not "fair" when things change without telling people. It's  always assumed that the GMs/admins/developers here have it in for our players...that we're trying to kill them off or just make life difficult for them.  We are making things reasonably difficult for players, but only in the extent that we'd rather people not just walk right up to level 40 without breaking a sweat.  Otherwise, the notion that there's some plot to kill people's characters to the point of perming them is beyond ludicrous.

The intent for most things is that there is a reasonable chance of success provided that one falls within the intended level range of the challenge presented, and I would even suggest that PCs (as a group) have the advantage almost everywhere. Even when GMs make changes, this is the metric we recommend and strive to achieve.  Yes, mistakes are made, but they're exactly that: mistakes.  Despite how many times we try to communicate this to people, we still from time to time hear about "fairness" and things...or worse, it's the things we don't hear about from people making assumptions and gossiping. This is really unproductive and it doesn't help anyone.

As far as the bug report that started this, the poster did exactly the right thing.  He saw a possible issue or cause for concern and reported it.  Maybe it's as-intended, in which case, we'll say so.  Maybe it's not, in which case we'll review it and potentially make changes and other reasonable accommodations. Regardless, bringing it forward is the best way to find out the intent and get something adjusted.

Hopefully, this puts some minds at rest and/or addresses some concerns that people began to voice in the bug report thread.  If not, there's space in this thread for questions.

General Discussion / The time has come...
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:06:39 pm »
Greetings Layonara Community,

It is with mixed feelings that I announce my retirement from the develoment of NWN-based Layonara after doing this for seven years and some change.  This is a move I have planned for some time (and almost did several times), and which has been needed for some time, but I am only just now making it a reality.  My development focus is now shifting completely to the MMO effort and Layonara's long-term future.

To keep NWN Layonara going in a development sense, I now officially pass the torch to the capable hands of Script Wrecked, who will now be responsible for all future fixes and updates.

I know you've all heard this plenty of times, but...this is not a “good-bye” letter. I am still very committed to and invested in Layonara and its long-term future. I still like to play here even (when the stars align properly), GM here and participate in this community. I do not see these things changing.  My presence will remain, but my fingerprints will no longer be on the updates.

There's not a lot more to say here, so join with me in congratulating Script Wrecked on his new position.

Rumour Has It / As the dust settles... World update..
« on: November 02, 2012, 08:09:59 pm »
For many years now the realm of Belinara has been beset by enemies, an almost constant barrage of chaos and disharmony. But, as the dust settles from the latest engagements a relative calm appears. Perhaps it is more the case that the populations of those nations directly affected have had their full of uncertainty, of blood and of war, or perhaps its because there are few left willing to fight, or even simpler, the resources no longer remain and those nations need time to lick their wounds and recover.

Whatever the reason, once the dragon wars are declared over Hilm begins the long and arduous task of rebuilding their shattered nation. In the north the lands ruined by Molvarens vast horde from the Cult invasion are slowly but surely reclaimed and resown, vast sections of the city outside Castle Hilm are slowly rebuilt, new trade lines re-opened.

Around Briardusk Hilm establishes an active training camp, the goal to show Molvaren across the border in Kuhl that the hilmites have not forgotten their original mandate, to oust Molvaren completely and restore Queen Langovale to the throne, a goal however that seems more fleeting with each passing day as Molvaren shuts Kuhl down almost completely to any outside influences while he slowly and quietly regains his strength. So to the Raelites remain on land given to them outside Briardusk, by the Hilmite authorities for their service during the war and in protecting Briardusk from Molvaren during the Dragon War. They slowly build a settlement and keep to themselves mainly but their presence, over five thousand of them also gives cause for Hilm and Molvaren to consider them carefully.

In the south, for years to come the Hilmite forces based in Sundance will be flushing out remnants of the Orsgaunt Horde from the civilised centres of the landscape and driving them back to the mountains or hunting them down. Their predations will cause the south to rebuild slowly and often face difficuties but, pending any further incidents they will recover and begin to work towards their former levels of conditions before Molvaren tore the nation apart.

In the Siphe Principality, tensions between Lord Alexander and the fledgling nation will remain a primary source of concern that may in time be eased with the relationship that seems to have developed between the former Kuhl General and now Sovereign Lord of the Siphe Principality, Jaedon Siphe and the Commander of the Toranite armies of Belinara and Chamion of Toran's Divine Will, Daniella Stormhaven. Many hope there can be a reconciling so that all can work towards a common goal, time will tell. Certainly the actions of Sir Lance Stargazer, Commander of Hilms Armies and Second in command of Hilm behind Lord Alexander have shown that he is more moderate in his tolerance of Sovereign Lord Siphe and is trying to bring both parties to an agreement of mutual tolerance as well.

And as the dust settles over the Roughlands, all evidence of Shadrixkayl's forces fade away but there are times when travellers, adventurers or hardy merchants are crossing regions of the landscape and an odd mist will arise threateningly and forebodingly before once again dissipating as if in warning of a time to come.

Above the Orsgaunt mountains to the north east of the Principality, the lands now claimed by the Dread Red Dragon Ractrafiorez there is nothing heard of the great dragon. It was not present for the final battles against Shadrixkayl, nor seen any time thereafter. Rumours began that the dragon, severely wounded after the battle in the Cult war against the Drach Ori occupiers of Briardusk had finally succumbed to the injury and returned to his lair high and deep within the Orsgaunt mountains to rest and recuperate. Certainly any seeking the dragons treasure were met with fierce fire giants, far more powerful and deadly that any previously known to inhabit the dangerous peaks. These giants called themselves Ractrafiorens, servants of Ractrafiorez.

Slowly, surely those soldiers of other nations stationed in Hilm following the end of the war with the Cult returned to their lands around the world to welcomes of varying degrees. The famine that had hit the world following the Cult wars had faded to some degree but not entirely gone away, many did not know if it was truly gone or simply held at bay for the moment.

Many nations around the world still had their own domestic troubles to deal with;

Boyer on Dreger is struggling to recover after infiltration by Pyrtechonite cultists and a deadly plague that decimated whole villages.

Taur'en on Alindor was struggling to come to terms with its own internal upheavals.

The Golden Alliance on Dreger was suffering badly from the predations of criminal elements undermining the safety and stability of the lose alliance of cities.

Sederra on Dreger continued to struggle to rebuild their shattered nation from the debris left over from the Cult wars.

Succession on Dreger has fallen into stagnation and the nations economy barely struggles to tick over. If not for the support from Rael there are fears the nation might dissolve into civil war in the not too distant future.

Rumours from the distant Elven nation of Voltrex indicate they are struggling with a dark elven incursion in their lands and the attacks of a heretofore unknown black dragon.

But it is not all doom and gloom, some nations have rebounded strongly after the Cult wars and while Belinara was still emrboiled in dragon trouble they had managed to slowly pull themselves together.

Erilyn continued to go from strength to strength, their power growing on Alindor.

The nations within Corsain and Tilmar have built in strength and power in their region.

The nations on Mistone have recovered well since the war and each nation is stable and growing again.

Liwich on Dreger, with the greatly diminished threat of the Silver Crescent has established strong trading ties to many nations and is once again becoming a hub of sea trade for the world.

And of course Rael continues to do what Rael does and slowly but surely tendrils of influence reach out touching other nations.

/// Please note this is not by any means a full and complete list of all goings on at present. But it is meant to give players an idea where varying places in the world are at currently.

Rumour Has It / General information and rumors
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:09:57 pm »
As time has passed the lands affected by famine have fallen into a holding pattern.  All urban growth has stopped and towns and cities have begun to recede in size.  Without a  stable food supply and loss of tax base due to migration, urban and suburban centres cannot function and there has been a return to the small sustainable villages and farming establishments.

Crops and livestock on a small scale are easier to protect and do not seem to wither to the extent of larger fields.   Population numbers are falling as families are having fewer surviving children due to the effects of poor nutrition and choice as well as migration to unaffected areas.  Armies and militias are also decreasing in numbers.

Depending on the dominant social system, those with wealth and power still have no problem obtaining the products they need, it just costs them more.  Dissidence is growing in the lower classes of some social systems where wealth is not shared and the those that hold power care little for the poor and middle classes.

The opposite holds true for those areas not effected by the famine.  Urban centres are booming and their populations are growing due to migration. Agriculture is expanding to support this population and export growth.  Wealth is being accumulated at all social levels for the most part and leaders are popular.  The trade in slave labour in the realms that permit and encourage such are  booming as disaffected and indebted peoples are falling victim to human trafficking.  Indentured servitude is also on the rise as the poor trade freedom for food. This cheap and bountiful labour source is also helping the growth of the all industry in prosperous areas, especially forestry, agriculture and mining.  Land and real estate in other kingdoms is being bought up as it becomes available.

Dark elf raids continue to plague the land at a rate far higher than what used to be considered the norm. Vale lies in ruins with only a few hardy souls still calling the area home.  There has been little to be done about rebuilding. Clover is desolate except for that one house that was not effected.  It too seems to lie empty and still.  No one was left to rebuild. Goblins and bugbears have taken advantage of the situation and their numbers are on the rise.

Peoples around the Forest of Fog did marshal together a militia and with the help of Rael the Benevolent and his army.  With the aid of a mercenary tracker they were able to discover an entrance to the deep where most of the raids had been mounted from.  A battle ensued where many lives were lost but the entrance was completely collapsed.  There are rumours that the Rael troops captured a demon horse and its rider and they were taken away.  All sources in the Rael establishment deny any such thing other than the successful battle occurred.

It is also rumoured that several ruling powers in affected areas formed a council to share information and  attempt to determine the cause and stop and hopefully reverse the effects of the famine. Authorities from several faiths and fields of study were invited to join.  Citing security reasons, little has been said about what has been discovered.  An observational telescope was erected on the slopes of Cyclops peak to watch the Red Eyes formation in the night sky.  They have gradually increased in brightness and size over time while other star formations have dimmed.  The number of stars in Lucinda's group has fallen to the lowest count in several centuries.

The peoples of Krandor are worried that civic leaders and tavern owners Connor Garvill and AnnaLee have not been seen in some time.  They were headed on a trip to Alindor and sources in Mariner's Hold confirm they arrived there but they have not been seen since entering the Wolfswood forest well over a year ago.

Rumour Has It / Pirate Captured!
« on: June 21, 2012, 07:01:13 am »
In Lor, there is talk about the infamous pirate Captain Pike The Menace being brought in by a group of Rofireinites and adventurers.  It's said that Captain Pike raided over forty vessels, usually those having been shipping goods to lands in need of supplies due to the famine.  With testimonies given of Pike's treachery, it is expected that the man will hang for his crimes.

Layonara Server / Housing sweep -- One Week Warning -- Everyone Read
« on: June 19, 2012, 12:13:07 am »
OK, after much delay (and some forgetfulness), I've gone ahead and done my own sweep of housing. This is a pretty simple sweep, based solely on activity level. To be specific, if the owner of a house has not logged in within the last 12 months, I have added that house to the following list:

On West:
101|102|104|113|115
118|120|127|130|133
[strike]136[/strike]|139|142|144|[strike]145[/strike]
[strike]146[/strike]|157|159|172|176
179|183|186|188|
On Central:
203|209|211|213|218
219|221|227|230|232
235|236|237|238|239
240|242|
[strike]246[/strike]|251|253
259|261|262|264|
Check these lists carefully.  If you still maintain access to one of these houses, you will need to either make arrangements to buy the house, present a solid reason for a transfer or vacate any possessions you wish to keep that may reside within.  Otherwise, the homes will be released back to the market starting in about a week.

For any homes that should not be released, post below with the following:

Address:
Character Name:
Proposed action:
Justification:

For clarity, this is not for people to start bidding or making a case for houses.  This is an avenue for people with an existing legitimate claim to a particular house to assert that for consideration. For example, if the house was owned by your character's spouse but the player has left or the spouse has permed, this would constitute a legitimate claim.  There are other possibilities, of course, and they will be evaluated on a case-by-case.

If you are just trying to get in line to buy a house, I will not entertain any such requests here.  Anyone without some reasonable claim can attempt to purchase a house through the in-game process.

When these houses do go back on the market, please have some consideration for other players before snatching up houses simply for more guild/personal storage, and please observe the "one house per character" request, in letter and spirit (i.e. a pair of spouses don't need a pair of houses). Give everyone a shot at the beneficial opportunities that player housing offers.

Layonara Server / Server status -- 29-May-2012 (CDT)
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:26:51 pm »
Hello all,

I'm letting everyone know that there are presently what looks to be some severe network lag/timeout issues affecting the game servers.  The pings to the server are very good but they randomly drop out for anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes, apparently.

The physical server has been rebooted and both game servers have been restarted.  At this point, there's nothing we can do.  Game play will be difficult at best and hazardous at worst until the problem is worked out.  Consider this your warning; this qualifies as a known lag event, so any Soul Strand loss, item loss or other negative effects are non-reimbursable.

Both servers are up, but I cannot guarantee stability. Play at your own risk.

We'll continue to monitor the situation.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Seen around Belinara...
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:02:30 pm »
After the retreat of the Cult's troops back in Kuhl, Steel practically disappeared from Belinara. Lately, however, he has been spotted more and more often around the Hilm Protectorate and Nesar. His return to Belinara coincides with further unrest within Hilm. They say that blood follows the demon of Leringard, but very few have actually seen the masked devil draw his sword- at least, few that are still living.

One way or the other, he's returned to Belinara for a reason...

General Discussion / Social Media, Layonara and You
« on: May 22, 2012, 08:02:22 pm »
Hello ladies and gents,

As you may have noticed Layonara's social media platforms have reawakened somewhat recently. Over the last year or so we have been learning about and exploring the usage of social media. It's possibility for growth, for developing more interactive options for the community and overall build of enjoyment of everyone who participates. There have been a lot of ideas and some have been cast aside. One thing is for sure however, social media is definitely something we want to pursue and think it will be useful to everyone who chooses to use these platforms.

To this end we're going to officially announce our move forward with social media. We will be using Facebook, Twitter and Google+ to do a host of things ranging from quest promotion, rumor spreading (you know, the kind that happens IG, not ... that other stuff from RL *winks* ), announcements, and anything else fun we can think of. These three mediums are not the extent of our intentions but it's what we are starting out with for now. We will “soon” have compatible buttons for promoting things you like on the forums. Google+ has some options to us that we're still playing around with and we might rearrange some things as we go.

Along with this we're going to put forward some incentives. At some specific goal markers we'll be offering the community special reward time periods as we achieve them. Our first goal is we'd like to have is an increased number of members on our fan groups.

As of this posting Google+ (found here) has 12 members.
As of this posting Twitter (@layonara) has 22 followers.
As of this posting Facebook (found here) has 151 fans.
When we reach 50 + users, 50 followers and 200 fans we'll celebrate with a double exp weekend. This is a test incentive. Other ideas are baking and we might just test them out sometime in the middle of our fan drive, and likely after we achieve these goals.

So, if you'd like to add some dimension to your RP, use #layoquest, #layorumor or #layoRP (as appropriate) on any of the three formats to make it searchable to your fellow members. The hash tag commands will make your activities searchable, Twitter and Google+ allowing it to be found with one click. If you you have a jam-packed feeds and are curious if there's been any announcements you don't want to miss, search out #layonara. Want to put a shout out to your friends for a spur of the moment get together? Yep, you guessed it #layoLFG! Long running series are more than welcome to develop their own hashtag usages. Make sure you use the #layoquest marker as well to loop us all in as appropriate.

Additionally, Gms will be using more of the social media formats to make announcements about their quests. That means we'll be retweeting (RT) and/or sharing information through our feeds to you. Alatriel has graciously allowed us to use her series as a tester for this and it seems to have gone over well. This will expand slowly over time as Gms grow more comfortable using this format. It is highly likely that quest tidbits or pre-quest work will be given out in this manner eventually. It is also likely that these formats will be utilized to alert players to impromptu or other special opportunities in game.

Will we RT/Share stuff from players? It's possible! Perhaps we see a rumor that needs to spread a little further, some RP that needs a particular nod, or an idea we rather like. We will definitely be watching to see what you guys do with this. One of the neat concepts in social media is the virtually limitless ideas out there. We are really excited to see what you all do with it.

General Discussion / NWN Master Server

If you are tired of waiting for NWN authorising your player name against a Master Server which (still) isn't there, you can add the following line to your "hosts" file:

Quote
0.0.0.0      nwmaster.bioware.com

The hosts file is found here:
Windows 95/98/Me|c:\\windows\\hosts
Windows XP/Vista/7|c:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts
Mac OS X 10.0 – 10.1.5|(via NetInfo or niload)
Mac OS X 10.2 and newer|/etc/hosts

You will still have to click to acknowledge that it couldn't find the Master Server, but at least you won't have to wait for it.
