General Discussion / A Grove in Memory of Jonathan
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:27:22 am »
As I won't be able to attend the funeral myself and flowers die so quickly I searched and found a group that plant trees and groves in memory and celebration.

I have established a grove in memory of Jonathan and when this has been processed (next 5-10 days) then anyone around the world will be able to access his grove's webpage and leave tributes as well as purchase additional trees to be planted in his memory for the quite reasonable sum of £5.

I'll update this thread once I have the details of his grove's webpage but wanted to let people know I had done it now in case they too were considering sending flowers and would prefer to plant a tree instead.

I have also asked Jil if she will inform Jonathan's family of this.

This a link to the webpage of the group in question

Ask A Gamemaster / Dusty Old Tome/Kingdom of Iliarial
« on: March 17, 2008, 05:50:06 am »
As I understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong it was stated here

http://forums.layonara.com/bug-reports/132082-dusty-old-tome-not-marked-plot.html

That the reason you can get multiple copies of this book and give them away to people below the level requirement of the book to share Lore.

Is it really within the spirit of the server, or for that matter sensible to give it to characters below the level limit required to acquire the book to allow them to enter the Kingdom of Iliarial?

Yes, you could claim it is 'teaching them' but as I understand it, the book has the history and the place is simply somewhere to enjoy a good adventure....so having already learnt the history reading the book....How is going there when below the level limit for the book learning anything new IC?

Of course accepting the quest from Iliarial that gives you 10k XP is a bonus to anyone going there.

So I guess my questions are:

Why does the book have a level limit?

Is it within the spirit of the server to hand it out to below 20th level characters simply for the purpose of allowing them to enter the Kingdom for XP and loot?

I have noticed that it is amazing just how many non-elves get taught elven by elven PCs...

I can’t help but wonder why?

Elves, even non-grey elves are by their very nature.....arrogant

Yes, you can argue that adventuring elves are much less so but they were STILL brought up as elves, they will have still been taught to look down on the 'lesser’ races during their childhoods.

So why are they happy to teach their musical and beautiful language to those lesser races?

Before some bright spark says...”so X can understand me” X being a friend, lover, husband, pet dog...

You BOTH speak COMMON....you already have a SHARED language....why do they need to learn elven to understand you?

I’m not saying that all those who have taught elven have done so for daft reasons, I’m just saying that elves are a little arrogant, so why the heck would they be sharing their language so much?

I mean, it’s kinda like the Jewish community teaching everyone Yiddish.

NB....I mean no offence to Jews or non-Jews, it was just the first example I could think of.

So basically.....if you’re thinking of teaching elven, for the love of chocolate can you stop, think and check it has a sound RP REASON for your character to do so.  Why is your elf happy to share their language with a non elf they can simply speak common to?

Now...I am not trying to have a go at anyone who has taught elven to others....I’m just trying to raise the point that the elven race is an arrogant one....I’m sure those on Ed The Ket’s present quest will back me up on this.  As such, people need to be remembering their heritage in situations like this.

It’s not quite the same as everyone loving Drow and Orc’s on sight, but it is something that should be considered.

I know, that each application has to be approved....But the Character approvers have to walk a fine line between ensuring the integrity of the world and that people have fun and let’s be honest, none of us (including myself) is above pointing at someone else’s submission and saying “How come they got it and I didn’t” as such, I just want people to think and take a little responsibility for the integrity of the world onto themselves for such things

Roleplaying / Looting Policy
« on: August 30, 2007, 11:36:18 am »
Looting Policy

Firstly, this is no way shape or form a comment on how any other group on the server wishes to distribute loot drops, simply what one group of players have decided to agree to and use on runs WE organise which I am posting so everyone knows before they join us.

Secondly, this is not a discussion.....Questions to clarify any aspect of the policy are fine but if you wish to discuss how loot is distributed, please make another thread.   As this post is to convey information not start a discussion if people take it off topic I will be asking for it to be locked.

Distribution of Loot drops

Where sensible the party will have 1-3 nominated looters who will be decided upon before the run starts and where possible pick the characters with the highest Lore to assist in identifying.  Where sensible and time allows loot should always be identified before being picked up.  Please leave all the looting to them as much as possible.

When it becomes time to distribute the loot items then items will be rolled for as normal BUT do NOT roll for an item unless you intend to actually use it.  By actually use it we mean on a regular basis.  If someone rolls for an item, stating they will use it and then we learn it has been sold within 3 months from the time they won it, they will no longer be invited on runs WE organise.

Should no one actually have a valid use for an item then all can roll for it and it can be sold as normal.

Rogues, Bards, UMD and Loot drops

Obviously rogues/bards with a high UMD can pretty much use anything.  Should an item be found that is CLASS specific then members of that class will get first refusal on that item period.  Should they not wish it then it will be rolled for by those that will use it, if no one will use then everyone can roll as above.  By class specific we mean that it is the ONLY class listed in the description as able to use that item.

Loot and High Level CNR

When a high level CNR run is organised, such as (but not inclusive to) emeralds, rubies, mithral, yew then slightly different rules will apply.

If there is enough of the CNR for everyone in the party to take a share then the above rules will apply.

If there is NOT enough CNR for everyone then the CNR will be rolled for as normal, again....Roll if you are going to use it, not simply to sell it.  Once the CNR has been rolled for and distributed then those NOT having got any of the CNR will get first refusal on any loot drops to roll among themselves as necessary.  Once that has been done then the above rule applies to any loot left.

Staying together

Running off and leaving the looter is both dangerous for the looter as well as often losing them XP from the next encounter.  Looters are providing the party a service and as such if you run off you will be given two warnings, if you continue to run ahead you will forfeit the right to roll for any CNR or loot.

Remember, if you roll saying you will use something and it is sold rather than used when another would have used it, you will not be asked to join the runs this group of characters organise.

Everyone in a group makes it possible for loot/CNR to be gathered and as such need should always come first in the distribution, then personal profit.

These rules obviously ONLY apply to runs any of these characters organise.  Each group has their own ways of distributing loot and when invited on their runs then we expect to follow their rules.  This is simply a heads up on what to expect on these character's runs.

The characters organising runs that this applies to are:

Drea
Godim
Sallaron
Muireann
Rhynn
Acacea
Emie Meadows
Beli Stonewill
Buddy Tenker
O'red Stonehall
Alleina
Daeron Stormcloud

Should anyone else wish to add their characters name to this set of rules as they would like to use it for trips they organise too, please PM me.  In fact, even if you’re reading this and thinking “That’s what I do anyway” please still PM me to have your name added.

Even if you don't organise trips as such but like and support this....PM me your name! :)

As promised here are cute pics of the kids from the holiday...

They got to meet Thomas the Tank Engine and stand on the footplate which pretty much made their day.  The guy stood behind them is the train driver.

General Discussion / Epic Quests
« on: June 01, 2007, 05:58:58 am »
I've been thinking something over for a while, something Makashi said recently....

"As for why was there a suggested level. Because that is what I suggested suprisingly, it was not a requirement in anyway - Now. After a lot of discussions in other parts of the forums, I took off level requirements, as epics complained about not having enough quests, or low levels, etc"

While it is nice to have multi level quests where low levels and epics can quest together and it has benefits....

Why no epic quests?  Why no quests for 20+?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the multi level quests but sometimes, just sometimes it would be nice to not have to worry about if half the party is gonna die in the first encounter or if I've made sure that all the lower level members of the party are involved and had their say.

Sometimes it would just be nice to be an Epic without worrying if I'm standing on anyone else's toes cause they are all Epics too!

So while Multi level quests are good (and kudos to those DM's that manage to run them)...let's not forget the level specific quests or be afraid to run those too!

Roleplaying / If Cha is your dump Stat.....
« on: April 26, 2007, 06:31:58 am »
We have no comeliness Stat in the NWN nights engine....As such, Cha needs to represent a balance between characters attractiveness and 'people’ skills.  10 in NWN Stats is considered as average as I understand it...so with the above balance that would be pretty average looking and pretty average people skills.

I wonder how many people have Cha as their dump Stat...say 10 or lower and have amazingly attractive PC’s who also have great people skills?

Now...I’m sure some of you are saying....”what’s the harm in that?” Well....not everyone uses Cha as their dump Stat...Some people actually do sit and think how they wish their character to be looks and people skill wise and actually put the points into their Cha to reflect that.  In fact....everyone should be doing that at character creation....The whole point is that you can’t necessarily get all your Stats exactly how you’d want them so you do have to sacrifice some things.  If you’re playing your Cha 10 character as amazingly beautiful cause you wanted more Str or Con say....where’s your sacrifice?  The person putting their Cha at say 14 has made theirs.

Now remember it is all about balance...I have seen a Cha 8 character who was played as very good looking....Their IC people skills were terrible, I mean really terrible...It was some very excellent RP on the part of the player who was actually very sociable to be such an anti-social character all the time.

Take my own Cleric of Mist for example....She has Cha 12 and the following in her bio “She may be considered stunning by many but her eyes are what draw you to her, they seem to swirl, shifting with her mood much as the sea would in a storm but within them is a coldness that may detract from her beauty”....Anyone who has met her will agree she is NOT a people person...She is blunt, rude, judgemental and those are often her nicer traits!!! As such, I play her as being slightly more attractive than Cha 12 because her people skills are lower than those of Cha 12.....Obviously those are my perceptions of Cha 12 but most people can apply enough common sense so we are all pretty much working on the same page.

So have a thought when creating your character, requesting a description change and obviously RPing your character as to what the balance is between your characters attractiveness and people skills and if you want to be good at both...actually put the points into Cha to reflect that rather than getting yourself a 'freebie’ and using it as a dump Stat.

Roleplaying / Deity Relations
« on: April 21, 2007, 03:55:20 am »
I had a very interesting IC religious discussion last night and it made me think of a few things that I’d like others to think of....also everything here is solely from my perspective of course which has occasionally been know to be wrong :D

I would like to point out before I do I am not trying to cause an argument but simply give the community something to think on so please don’t feel the need to justify your characters actions.

We have deity relations.....We have them for a reason....They are generally well known.

Clerics and Paladins are, to a greater degree expected to be zealots of their religion and as such, in their own way react to these deity relations.

This is not to say that all clerics and paladins have to froth at the mouth or anything but think about this.....

In RL you would not expect an average Roman Catholic Priest to go to dinner with a known Satanist so why in Layo is there often the attitude that a cleric or paladin who is vocal (without griefing) when presented with someone enemy to their faith is being mean and judgemental?  Why is everyone expected to get along? (rhetorical questions here people!)

Also....While I understand that people wish to play their characters in different ways if everyone decides to judge on actions and not beliefs then eventually the deity systems simply becomes pointless....This is not to say everyone does do that but it is something we need to be aware of.

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t party with those of enemy deity’s....My Misty Cleric will travel with Dezza’s Rolfi....And many a barbed comment is exchanged on these outings!  I’m sure occasionally the rest of the party would prefer it *not* to be in the middle of a battle and that we’d just shut up and kill things but no one expects us to get along.

So next time a religious discussion is going on...think a moment before you join in...Oh.....Clerics and Paladins....KNOW your deity relations!! Ignorance is not an excuse.

Introduce Yourself / All about DMOE
« on: March 12, 2007, 10:41:04 am »
Well I'm a S.A.H.M (mostly) to my two kids..Natalya (5) and Gwilym (nearly 3).

Before I gave up working to have my kids I was a project secretary for a building company on a refurbishment/extension to a large local store.  I presently work part time at weekend evenings in a liquor store.  When the kids are old enough I'm toying with the idea of going back to school and maybe training to become a Midwife.

I've been playing PnP for a good 14 years now and about enjoyed playing NWN multi player with my partner until we decided around July 2005 to look for a persistent world.

Being lazy I tasked him with finding a good one and forgot about it till he found Layonara....First character submitted in August 2005 and been here ever since!

Recently I got involved with the testing of the LSPM module to give a little back to the place and I hope to continue to do that from time to time where I can.

I've played a wide variety of PnP systems being always happy to be experimented on by my DM's and one of the things I like about Layo is the PnP feel that the team bring to it where it's actually possible to.

I presently play Ireth Astendor (formerly Telrunya) and Muireann.

I like a wide variety of music and enjoying reading and cross-stitch when my kids and my cat let me.  I also enjoy the luxury of being able to play Layo on a laptop, crashed out in front of the TV watching DVD's.
