Ask A Gamemaster / stealing
« on: April 22, 2017, 11:38:32 am »
I just restarted Gunther after a five year hiatus and was wandering around, reacquainting myself with layo.  n said wandering, Gunther happened upon a cave with a locked door inside.  Not being the lockpicking sort, Gunther battered the door down and went inside.  It appeared to be somebody's home or guild hall.  Curiosity unsated, Gunther poked around the various bookshelves and storage containers.  Some were locked and unbreakable.  But one had a really nasty helm inside.  Dont recall the name of it, but it exuded evil and required a 32nd level character anyway.  It was otherwise pretty powerful.  Not a crafted item.  Gunther didnt take it as it was unusable and reeked of evil (Gunther is CG, if I recall).  But it did make me curious, in our current day of few characters extant, are such items considered abandoned and therefore finders keepers, or do we acknowledge the possibility that people might come back and wonder where their stuff is, so we keep our greedy mitts to ourselves?  I plan on wandering around some more and poking about, if I find something ungodly powerful that Gunther can use, is it fair game?  I dont really plan on breaking into folk's homes and looting myself silly, but I kinda like reading the descriptions on unique items and someday might find something that I'm tempted by.

Quests Ideas and Discussion / little green men (and women possibly)
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:21:27 am »
I was thinking about what might prompt me to play something other than Gunther and the thought occured to me....

We have had, at one time or another, the dwarven army, the shortlived halfgiant army, etc, etc.  I imagine there have probably been other similar groupings in the past.  Guilds and whatnot.

So this isnt an original thought by any means...but what do people think about a group of goblins.  It wouldnt last forever, due to people dropping out, perming, etc, but if a GM were willing to build a campaign around the idea, it might be fun.

Say a band of red light goblins, either driven out of the caverns or their home is destroyed by a group of greedy, goody-goody paladins and clerics.  The goblin band barely escapes with their lives and goes on to seek revenge against the goodly aligned folk.  Campaign ensues.

Ask A Gamemaster / stat abilities versus skills and saves
« on: August 04, 2012, 11:00:30 pm »
While we're discussing that particular encounter, I'd like to ask if its the common practice to pit ability rolls versus skills (ie str versus discipline). Gunther has a pretty high strength, but if it were pitted against his discipline, it would be a hopeless contest.

I've seen it before on other quests with other GMs and it always struck me as a pretty uneven matchup. Say a generic character, not Gunther, has a strength of 36 (giving a +13 I think). Pitting this against a discipline skill of 35 is then an impossibility for the strength user.

Strength against strength, discipline against discipline, like versus like these are equitable matchups.

Same thing with say, strength against a fortitude save, or reflex,or willpower. A character can have a +25 to fort saves, strength maxes out at something like +15. There is very little chance for a character as strong as a titan to have a chance against the fort save.

Ask A Gamemaster / Camping CNR
« on: July 29, 2012, 09:43:01 pm »
I hate to ask a serious question, but was recently advised by someone that I might be violating the spirit of Layonara by my actions and that I was camping in violation of server rules.

I have read the rule on 30 minutes of cnr camping and I was stating that while mining in a certain area, that I time how long I've been there and how long it takes me to mine the ore in that area.

I quoted the 30 minute rule and that the further explanation stated that if one is efficient that they can get three rounds of harvesting accomplished before the 30 minutes expire.  I stated to this person that if I cant get three rounds done in 30 minutes, then I harvest two and then leave.

I was advised at this time that I was violating the spirit of the server and worse that I was discussing my violation in front of a GM.

I read the rule and thought that I understood it and that I was sure I wasnt breaking that rule.  I really enjoy layo and playing Gunther, thats why I always come back.  I want to make sure that I'm not doing something that'll get me in trouble down the line.

In the situation where Gunther is mining, he wipes out all the critters in an area, mines, then moves on to the next area and wipes out all the critters in that area, then mines in there.  Then he goes back to the first area, wipes out the critters again, then mines again.  Then goes back to the second area, wipes out the critters in that area again, then mines.  If there is time enough, he can squeak in a third round.  I dont stay for any further rounds and leave the area entirely afterwards and dont come back for at least a day, usually longer.

If i could get some advice on this, I'd appreciate it.  I dont want to be violating either the spirit of the server or outright breaking any rules.

Thanks.

Quests Ideas and Discussion / More fishing based related quests!
« on: July 29, 2012, 12:29:58 am »
Perhaps an insanse necromancer has created a school of vampiric asian carp (or the layo equivalent of asian carp).  Ships gone off course, found with only the withered husks of their exsanguinated crew.

No evidence is found, only the corpses of the crew and the sunbaked remains of a few fish that got caught on board.

Someone must stop these bloodsuckng fish and their dark master!  Muahahahaha.

Perhaps an intrepid crew, led by an elite team of powerful druids and armed with the Holy Fishing creel of Toran is the only hope of Layonara.

General Discussion / Thanks karma!

Karma ran a fun impromptu for a small group of us that turned the Haven Mines into a much more ghouish scenario.

Thanks for the fun quest.  That was a blast.

Ask A Gamemaster / Epic damage reduction
« on: July 26, 2012, 12:00:21 am »
I'm afraid to get the answer to this question......

With the halfgiant skin, Gunther has a 20 constitution.  He just leveled to 24, giving an ability point.

I place that in Con, making his constitution 21, hence fitting the requirement for epic damage reduction.

However it doesnt show up in the list of available feats.

Without the giant skin, his constitution is 15 (I think), 16 with the level jump to 24th level.

The game only factors off the base number  (no skin taken into account)?  So epic damage reduction cant be taken unless Gunther's base number somehow jumps to 21?

General Discussion / Apology to karma

Hey karma, you logged before I could say anything, but I wanted to apologize for getting yet another one of your characters killed.

Its not on purpose, I swear.

Trade and Market Hall / Cobalt Full Plate
« on: June 05, 2007, 11:37:55 pm »
One suit of cobalt full plate armor for auction.  Fresh off the anvil, this armor will keep you safe and secure even against the deadliest enemies.  Difficult to get, even more difficult to make, if the bids dont at least meet the minimum figure I have in mind, then the auction is cancelled with no sale.

Quests Ideas and Discussion / halfgiants amok
« on: April 11, 2007, 12:52:02 am »
This idea actually sprang from a thread that got started recently.  But its more of a ripoff of the game 'arcanum'.

Mad wizard (arent they all) plots world domination via his enforced breeding project of giants and humans, making a halfgiant that is more obediant and brighter than a giant, and less morally encumbered than a human.  Also, obviously I guess, much stronger than the average human.

I didnt really flesh the idea out any further than that, but it might be good for a single, one day quest, to find the lair, stop the halfgiant horde and the wizard.

Ask A Gamemaster / Vile racist dwarfs
« on: April 09, 2007, 07:48:59 pm »
Heh.  This has come up twice in the past couple weeks or so and I've never seen it before, so I thought I'd ask....

Dwarves seem to be detecting that Gunther is a halfgiant and responding accordingly.  I dont have a problem with their reaction, but how exactly are they supposedly so insightful?  The concept that they spend their lives fighting giants and can therefore automatically detect their blood, even diluted, doesnt seem practical.  I'll readily admist that I havent checked lore on dwarves (and I will do so asap), but I have a hard time imagining that such a thing is an automatic check.

I am adverse to PvP, but this is heading in that direction, and I'd as soon get some direction on this prior to it going that far.

Thanks

Anybody who wondered where Gunther had gone off to, he'll be back very soon.  Probably tomorrow morning.

General Discussion / On vacation
« on: July 26, 2006, 07:00:04 pm »
I will be on vacation from the 29th to the 5th.  No computer, television, phone.  No boat, no light, no motor car, not a single luxury.  Like Robinson Crusoe....  Well, the motor car, I'll have. And the light.  And I guess there will actually be boats too.

Any quests in that time period, will be without Gunther, sorry bout that.  Look forward to getting back into them upon my return.

Oh yeah, anybody planning on needing silver or platinum ingots in the interim, make your order now.

A small, handwritten ledger contains several stories pertaining to an individual known as Gunther N'diknik.  Whom the author might be is unknown and unwritten.

Prologue

It is the happenstance of my life to catalog the adventures and misadventures of the adventurer known as Gunther N'diknik.  My researches have indicated that he was born in the city of Leilon, the rather questionable offpsring of a local maiden and in itinerent giant of unknown quality and personage.

As per my conversations with Gunther, his reputed father was allegedly skulking in the bushes (as giants are wont to do) just outside a farmhouse on the outskirts of Leilon.  Gunther's mother was walking home from the local tavern a few drinks none the wiser.  Apparently, said giant accosted Gunther's mother, which was reputedly not much to the woman's dismay (It is the author's opinion, having met Gunther's mother, that the giant's eventual escape from the woman was a fortuitous relief to the giant).  Many months later, as such things happen, Gunther was delivered into the world, much to the eventual chagrin and occasional delight of those that met him in his travels.

Given the nature of Gunther's recollections, or lack thereof, several years are missing chronologically from the events surrounding this time period.  It is apparent that Gunther rapidly grew to enormous size and strength for one his age.  It came about that he was given, or perhaps sold, to a local farmer who worked Gunther from dawn to dusk, yanking tree roots out of the ground, hitching up and then pulling the plow to till the fields, and other such farmwork as this author has little knowledge of.
