General Discussion / Discharged and Leaving
« on: February 27, 2009, 03:50:39 pm »
I wish to inform you that as effective right now, I'm discharged from the DM team and leaving the server, effectively being banned too.

The story goes that once upon a time, months and a year from now, I did grow tired of how the security matters of the server were being ignored. While the DM team can be trusted in the majority of the cases, it is not unknown for some to have left in "rage". Considering that there are countless ways for a DM to exploit his powers for his own gains, I thought it was not too unlikely for such a person to have cheated before leaving (or if you have a DM that is tired of the world and doesn't care anymore... or worst case, if someone actually cheats because they want to cheat).

As the proposed counter-measures to such actions, to monitor and keeping track of everything was deemed unnecessary, I made this last fatal error of actually wanting to prove those claims wrong. That's where I came up with this not-so-clever idea of triggering one of these exploits myself, in this particular case a one that involves acquiring XP. My hope was to accumulate very huge amounts of it and lay the cards on the table afterwards to present the horrors of the situation, fully realising that when doing so, I would highly likely be banned.

But then there was this WLDQ approval and I so dearly wished to have the quest run first (I realise now that it was a very selfish wish), and the WLDQ got delayed. Something that I wanted to be handled in a relatively short amount of time (a few months to prove that it could easily have been done in an undetectable fashion) got prolonged. A lot.

Over more than a year, this particular exploit managed to generate about 3,550,000 (yes, you read it right - I was very keen to keep track of all of it) XP without setting off any alarms. And this is where disaster struck. While I was fully aware of that all XP is logged in an easily scan-able manner, I didn't think anyone is nowadays actually bothering to look at those logs anymore (recall a very early case of someone doing a quest-XP exploit and getting caught?) and hence didn't realise the mess I was creating for Dezza who had so kindly accepted to finally run the WLDQ.

The attempt was "caught" and my intentions seriously backfired. It is highly unlikely anyone will believe my words now since I was literally caught with my hands in the cookie-jar and I understand you. It's unlikely I would have believed myself if the situation had been reversed. Maybe if I had "confessed" first, but not now. As pointed out, this is the same sort of arguments someone would use in order to make him or herself look innocent.

If there are any suspicions of me helping someone else using this exploit (or any other fashion helped them); put those thoughts to rest. I'm certain the team will be more than happy to confirm that I kept this localised to me, myself and I only. There are no items or gold dropped to anyone (not even myself). There are no freebie levels given to anyone (those who know me probably also knew I was one of those who were very strict in even handing out RP ones). There was no "porting others to the emeralds". It was I who did it to myself and there was no reason to involve anyone else (keeping all the fallout on myself). My wish was to prove a point, to increase awareness and actually prioritize the fixes, not to help people cheat.

In hindsight, this was rather stupid.

I deeply regret that all the efforts Dezza has put in are now getting tossed out of the window and do feel I owe him the greatest of all apologises.

I also regret to have misused the trust that the team and the community had put in me as this certainily was not handled in any manner even close to being acceptable. While I believe my original intentions were pure to the spirit, the method I choosed isn't right, and I feel guilty about creating this whole mess.

But done is done and my fate was already sealed the moment I first made my decision.

The team were very kind to open the door for something less than a permanent banning first but in the end it was agreed upon that the most proper thing to do here is nothing short of a ban, which I'm sure you all agree with too. Using an exploit of this kind, especially in a position of a DM, regardless of whether you believe my reasons or not, can really result in nothing else than a banning.

This was plain and simple a screw-up from my side. No one asked me to do this and I'm smart enough to realise this was crossing lines.

I therefore wish to make a last apologise to Dezza, the team and all of you here for the troubles I've caused.

We will walk separate paths from now on... and I do hope that you will have a continued pleasant Layo-journey.

Sincerely,
Weeblie

ps. I would kindly ask people not to quote every single line here and start a lynching process of the team or myself. This post is more or less final from my side, though I'm certain the team would like to express their official view too. I realise what I did is doubtful at best and there are thousand and one ways to question me and my motives. It is my preference to have this locked.

Fixed Bugs / Unable to create new character.
« on: September 08, 2008, 11:29:12 am »
While creating a new character, the "character has an invalid feat" message will be returned. Most likely cause is because of the riding feat being removed from "our" 2da which is not used/loaded during the character creation process.

A fix that springs to one's mind is to either add our own feat 2da to the override folder or a dummy feat is re-added to the 2da.

Just for Fun / Exceptional Lag
« on: May 04, 2008, 07:43:07 pm »
SS reimbursement requests are from time to time filed under the Exceptional Lag case... but what is really exceptional lag? Lets try to define that with this video feed (beware that it's approximately 120 MB large)! One shall take extra note that I have a steady stream of 25-ish FPS during the whole battle (smooth camera movement... no obvious lag while typing text...) while spell casting and movement in general is hampered by heavy delays. :)

http://ftp://ftp.starworm.com/layonara/lag_chongo_quest.rar

Note: It's Xvid/MP3 encoded. VLC Media Player is fully capable of playing it, if you haven't got the codecs for other media players of your choice.

Edit: I compressed the file with WinRAR for slightly quicker download.

General Discussion / Happy Birthday Leanthar!
« on: April 09, 2008, 06:17:30 pm »
Aaah... now that everyone else has done these sort of things before, I think it is my turn in this case! Still a little bit early due to the timezone things (it's a new day here, but not a new day there!)...

In either case, lets say a happy birthday to Leanthar. ;)

Rumour Has It / The Tale of the Lost Castle
« on: March 11, 2008, 04:33:21 pm »
[strike]A loosely told story...

Many years ago, centuries and even more, there was the great house of a noble who's name has long been forgotten. A castle, more magnificient than any other castle ever been seen, stood high up on a cliff, admired by all those who lived around it. It was lovely there. Flowers and roses everywhere, chattering birds nesting in the trees... the sound of the soft waves brushing against the cliffs. A paradise, some might say.

The people lived in peace and harmony and those who ruled were fair. But... The wife of the noble was barren. They thought all those knowledeable in the art of healing... priests and priestesses from various churches. Old wise men and woman from the most obscure corners of the world... Those who tend to dance around fires with very little clothes and do their mumbo-jumbo magical rituals... all was for naught.

But then, one day, there would come a merchant travelling to the castle. A one that looked like any other, smelled like any other, talked like any other. Your average everday merchant who just happened to pass by. And believe it or not, he promised that he knew how to undo their miseray. For a small insignificant price, of course, as everything tends to have a price.

In exchange for the small bottle of crystal clear blue liquid he had, he wished to have the opportunity to select one single thing of his choice to bring with him. Smiling, he gave the noble and his wife this little bottle of liquid, them nodding and gladly accept his cost. They offered him gold... wealth beyond imagination... relics and ancient books... but none seemed to catch the interest of him. Instead, he said, he was going to think about it. And so he left.

And now, it comes that this happy man and his wife did get their so wanted child. First... a young boy... the sort of boy every single parent would be proud of... well, every single dwarven and human parent. The noisy sort of boy. A one with a great heart, but even greater strength. A one that was destined to be a knight, as you could expect! He had the looks too, I may add...

Anyway, and there was the second child... they surely were not content with a single one after all their trouble! A girl in this case. Even being so young, she showed great promises of becomming one of the fairest in the world. Clear eyes and a smile that could change the hearts of even the most self-diciplined guard.

The third bith were the twins... a much greater disappointment than the first two, but regardless deeply beloved by the parents. A quiet young boy with a mind sharp as a dragon's teeth, but a health fragile as a vase. A schoolar was his path when he grew up. And a little girl. While looking quite cute still, she was all but a wilting flower compared to her older sister, sharing none of her charm. Quiet and staying just with herself... Well, in all honesty, the parents did not know what she would become when she grew older. So lost in her own minds was she!

For years, they lived happily together. Sometimes going to the lake nearby to fish like any other normal common family... sometimes a game of hide and seek in the forest... you know, like any other normal family! They had the opportunity to... they were of different ages, so.... but becomming teenagers. And then, one day, the merchant came back. The parents were of course overjoyed over his reappearance, gladly giving him hugs despite the fact that they were nobles and him... well... a merchant! After all, he was directly responsible for their joy, was he not?

As graceful as one could expect, he smiled and asked for a talk in private. Of course the two parents agreed on that! They entered the room and stayed there for some hours... when they came back out... The parents were no longer smiling.

There was never a mention of what he asked for, but clearly, it was something that could not be given to him. The parents offered him just about anything else... but he refused and still insisted on that particular thing. In rage of his lack of manners, they throwed him out of the castle, telling him that he was no longer welcome there anymore. And he left.

Life continued on again, with the whole matter quickly forgotten. The parents of course felt a little bit bad about it at first... But their bad subconcious feeling soon subdued, as after thinking it over, what he was for was truly outrageous... whatever it was. And so it would come one day when the oldest child would finally become a man. Celebrations lasted long into the night and everyone was quite... well.. drunk when going to bed.

At the next morning...

The castle was gone.

Where the castle had stood before, there was just empty ground.

There are rumours of the four children walking the lands. Sighted at one place, to never stay long enough for anyone to discover the truth. Of course, no one can truly say if the children were the children in the story, but in the longer story, they resembled them.. The children have never been seen together, only asking for something that no one knows what it is or where to find it... It is said that the castle really has existed, and was not destroyed or otherwise imploded during that day. Instead, merely that it was taken as payment, as a retribution for the parents refusal to fullfill their part of their bargain.

A story for a child? A rumour of the truth?

I do not know...

Fixed Bugs / Area Tag Collision (Road to Fort Thunder)
« on: March 06, 2008, 01:44:03 pm »
Problem:

The area "Road to Fort Thunder" on Central is incorrectly tagged as "cho_arnax_outskirts", making it collide with the "Arnax Outskirts" area's tag. This is (at least) affecting rest-location-savings which might have some pretty serious consequences as the first is a very hostile area.

Fix:

Change the tag of area to something else.

General Discussion / Reschedule: A Girl's Dream - Chapter 10 - Consequences
« on: September 15, 2007, 05:00:57 am »
Due to this quest overlapping with another and having the danger with overlapping with even one more quest, and the time being on the Aussie hours which are known to have very low player density, I will reschedule my quest to the next week instead!

Layonara Server / CANCELED - A Girl's Dream - Chapter 8 - Dry Lands
« on: June 06, 2007, 07:50:48 am »
A huge amount of apologises for canceling this session with any previous notice.

For those who doesn't know it already: I'm using a VPN connection (OpenVPN configured to only use TCP) to bypass the firewall that blocks all UDP ports in school. But a little now and then, the VPN server crashes (or does some other weird thing) and I'm unable to initialize such a connection, which results in me being unable to login into NWN. Today was very unfortunately a such day. :(

I could get home (and I do will) and use my computer there, but it generally takes about 40 minutes for me to do such a walk, which would result in a very, very short quest. So therefore, I will have to cancel this particular session.

From the next week, the summer vacantion will start here and my schedule becomes almost completely unreliable. Unless I'm able to inject a session now and then (maybe as spontanteous events? I'm not sure...), this particular quest series will most probably have a summer break also, to be resumed at the middle of August (hopefully).

Thank you all who has participated so far, and all who waited with patience today.

See you in game!

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Trashcan Change
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:56:30 pm »
I would suggest that the trashcan script is modified to clear when the container is closed and not when the items are put into them.

I was primary thinking about that after reading IDii's Item Reimbursement Request. It is very, very easy (and I've almost done it myself too) to accidently drop an incorrect item/bag into it.

15
It would be great if one could delete parchments from the folder directly in LORE.

It's a big hazzle to remove the papers one and one IG and thought it might be nifty to do that in LORE instead. :)

16
I would like to suggest the commands "toggle noemotes", "toggle check_silent" and "toggle no_animate" to be mentioned in the Speech Recognition Help (i.e. the one you get by typing "/o C help"). They are more or less hidden commands right now, as the only place I've seen them is in the changelog. :)

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Loot Alarm System - Display Item Value
« on: September 23, 2006, 10:04:27 am »
I would suggest that the item's value would also be displayed for the Loot Alarm System.

An "Undentified Item (Longsword)" could mean everything from an "Old Rusty Longsword -1" to an "Ancient Mithril Longsword of Doom and Whackiness +65", after all. :)

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Skin dispelling rune
« on: September 22, 2006, 08:29:37 am »
First of all, I'm talking about the stoneskin/barkskin (and maybe some other "whole character texture changing" spell)... Not a rune to dispell your characters skin! :P

I think most people can agree with me that it -is- kind of ugly to look like a walking rock-head or treant when one's meeting other people "on the road". Of course one can usually use the dispelling rune to get rid of that effect, but as it also removes all other spells, it would take a minute or two to rest and recast them. Humans are lazy by nature so I've usually found myself not dispelling anything just because of that...

I would therefore suggest a new rune (or just a new voice command, "/o E dispel skin"?) that only removes these sort of spells.

It's not really a big deal. Heh, don't even see this as a request... But, if someone has a few minutes too much of his/her life and accidently opens the toolset... ;)

Fixed Bugs / Horse Bug/Suggestion
« on: September 09, 2006, 02:01:21 am »
I would like to suggest an extra "is the PC already mounted?" check before letting PCs mount horses.

I managed to duplicate Alleina's horse (no clue why, it just happened when I was renaming it) and noticed that it was possible to mount the "clone" when already being mounted on the other horse. Due to natural curiosity, I tried that of course, which resulted in that the phenotype of the character kind of messing up (one's still on the horse even after dismounting it which makes one able to "spawn" a lot of horses). :)

Trade and Market Hall / Bying copper nuggets/ingots.

I'm seeking copper nuggets/ingots if anyone have those, and will pay 15 gold for each nugget and 40 gold for each ingot. Minimum quantity I'll buy is 100 nuggets and 50 ingots.
