What I like to see IG: Creativity, cohesion, free flowing role playing, realistic role playing, depth of character and story, interactions that incite emotional reactions.

What I dislike to see IG: Metagaming, powergaming (eh, this is harder to call out though... maybe it's the idea of it that I don't like), stories/characters that are too rigid to allow things to flow in a different direction, snarky players (love snarky characters though), pretty much everything that was involved in the big banning incident three or four years back, Drizzt (har har).

Let me explain... no, there is too much. Let me sum up.

Leanthar started V3.

People were stupid, gave him a headache.

Leanthar laid down the law told people to shape up.

Then he revealed that he's working (with 22 other people) on a game for Layonara. A custom game... shveet.

NWN Layonara says up as long as he can afford it *cough* donate *cough*, then it comes down and all efforts go into the game. This could mean no Layo for a while or it could mean it comes down right as the other one goes up. There are a few threads out there that have the details...

Also somewhere in the middle of all of that, Blood was killed and dragons rule the world! Welcome back!

(Head to Layonara Server in the forum to find the threads that explain everything and prepare to freak out!)

I give this my stamp of approval as well. I met a character on my first venture into Layonara in months yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyable and (although I don't want to give anyone away) a bit terrifying. Keep it up folks.

Thanks for the help, I'll wait for the handbook. (I'm predicting a "Best Seller" with all the custom content being added. Name changes and what not.)

And yeah, it's been a while, at least seven months the way I count it, probably longer. I'm looking forward to getting back in game for some R&R... though, we all know you get neither on Layonara. It's pretty much the most stressful and tiring entertainment eva.  :)

Well... that's just fan-freaking-tastic. Honestly, the creativity you guys put into Layonara blows mah mind! Keep it up.

General Discussion / Re: Fantasy Novels
« on: July 29, 2007, 07:25:24 pm »
Yeah, if you read pretty much any fantasy novel and can compare it to literature from past centuries/millenia you'd have to go uber far back to find the "original" of the idea.

The thing that keeps me coming back is that I enjoy taking in more than just the plot as far as writing is concerned. Writing style, voice, characters, setting, subplots, and other aspects of writing are simply too many and varied for me (personally) to not find something to like in most novels.

Yeah, the market probably is flooded with fantasy novels but I'm of the opinion that you can only grow as a writer by writing and reading. I read a lot, which allows me to pick up on similarities in plot, styles and all that good stuff. If I never wrote for fear of writing something that's been done, I'd never get anywhere though. I'm convinced that I'll come up with something original to my generation eventually... and there's just so much out there that I haven't read yet that I can't shy away from fantasy novels just yet.

Server Rules / Re: For those fast leveling characters out there
« on: July 26, 2007, 06:10:43 pm »
The biggest thing I've learned about leveling is that it's never enough. I went through phases where I was content with my level. Phases where I wanted to be a lower level. And phases where I did nothing but run around killing stuff all day because I felt I had to get that level so bad. It's a cycle that everyone goes through (and it NEVER stops... even at level 20+).

Thing is, the most satisfying thing about Layonara for me was always the role playing. Often I'd lose sight of that when the powergamer in me would pop out. It's not wrong to want to level (I always want to), I just have to remind myself that no amount of levels will make Layonara fun for me. It's the people you hang with and how you hang with em.

I've been on worlds that seem to have nearly as many areas as Layonara. I can level two or three times faster and the items are more powerful. What are they lacking then? They're lacking Rhynns, and Frins, Peragos, and Tolinars, Rhizomes and Nawens. Yeah, levels are good (heck, they're freaking awesome), but you can't role play with your levels.

My advice: seek people out, play your character, work on developing his/her personality, his/her story, his/her emotional depth and knowledge of the world and the plot. Go on quests, forge friendships, adventure and explore. The less you concentrate on levels, no matter how much time you play every week, the faster they'll seem to come.

Nice to see so many familiar err... faces(?) again. Thanks for taking the time to say hi. I plan on stalking the Forum and trying to catch up on my Layonara Literature over the next couple of weeks... no more playing for a while as my family is preparing to move, but I'll be "around"... somewhere...   ^_^

I'm ZeroVega and I also support this message. (Though I do tend to cut some slack to players who are not from the States or a predominantly English speaking society... still, it's a good habit to get into. Be understanding, but once that's over go ahead and whip their tuchis' into shape and get them typing English well and proper.) I love you guys.

"Watch this..." *casts a spell to impress and then is immediately smooshed*

"I've got a plan..." *monsters proceed to respawn and kill everyone*

"Don't worry, I'm still here..." *Endurance spell wears off... death*

"Let's get a closer look." "Don't worry, I've been here before." "That could have been worse" "Let's do it again!"

  2. I'm pretty sure that's what everyone thought when my Tath would yell at drow. ;)

Layonara does not have a hemi under it's hood.
Layonara is not the other white meat.
Layonara is not out to get you (everyone else is though).
Layonara is not a large body of salt water located in South West Asia.
Layonara is not a substitute for gravity.

Finally, it is neither a planet, or brand of popcorn, or a color at all related to Zinnwaldite... is is also not a medical procedure involving a laser, a monstrous subwoofer, and Maria Sharapova... last of all it is not and never will be real life.

(I promise you I have thoroughly tested the last part of that list and have come to the sad realization that while I can try my hardest to will my skin to turn obsidian, my eyes to turn red, and my clothes to turn suppa fly, I cannot will into existence an entire unique ecosystem and a magical source such as the Weave. I am sorry.)

Layonara is not running for President.
Layonara is not Robert Downy Jr.'s imaginary friend.
Layonara is not a new diet.
You know the twisty tie that comes with loaves of bread? That's not a Layonara.
Layonara is not a medical term for the mushy white stuff that forms around scabs when you take a hot shower.
Layonara is not the process by which Jello gets its jiggle.
Layonara is not one of the 48 United States.
Layonara is not a numerical representation used in Trigonometry or Calculus.

...finally... once you go Layonara, you never go home.

I've decided to come out of my subterranian lair to make a post on this... don't get attached, finals aren't over until next week...

First off, from my experiance players come to Layonara with the intention of playing three main types of characters (or a mix of the three).

1. Powerful soloing characters. (The guys that can rip through anything and level themselves up.)
2. Support characters. (The people that YOU don't want to go anywhere without.)
3. The uber RP characters. (The ones who are good to have all the time. In fighting and out.)

I've fallen into all three at one point or another, especially with Tath. He started as a support character, then turned into more of a powerful solo character. I then started to get a bit lonely and bored and moved to uber RP. Then I realized that fighting and adventuring is part of RP which brought me to where I am now (An RP/Support character). Nearly full circle.

In my time here I've also gone from one extreme to another as far as my opinions on these types of players are concerned. First, I thought it was all about RPing and nothing else should really matter. Then I thought you absolutely needed a powerful character to make it here. (I had a crafting phase in there too, but we'll leave it out.) Then I thought that all the characters should be able to support each other and require each other for many things (so as to facilitate RP). Finally, I just gave up and figured that we really do need all these different kinds of characters in Layonara. As long as you RP them to the best of your abilities and respect Leanthar and the other players in the process (not powerleveling or making use of exploits) who cares what your build looks like?

Then, there the question of weird class combos. (Monk/Druid, Monk/Cleric, Fighter/Rogue ect.) In Layonara, it is pretty much anything goes. Does that mean you'll get everything approved? No. What it means is that there IS a chance. What can you do to increase your chances. Well, it's pretty simple. You need "cred." Someone who's totally new to this world will be less likely to be approved for an extremely special PrC than someone who's been here a year or two. A lot of people would yell, "That's not fair!" but if you look closely, you'll find it is. It's L's world and he wants to make sure the people who play here are capable of handling their positions and playing their characters with poise befitting the position.

It really isn't a snooty thing, it's a smart thing.

As for wizards and being overpowered with Tensers. I agreed with you at one point. Many months ago I benefitted from Tensers with my wizard and realized just how strong it was. I thought it was too strong. Once I stopped to really examine it though, I found that (for me) the spell was fine just how and where it was. Wizards control magic, they study it for years and years. Many wizards here keep long and elaborate journals recording their studies and findings. Their acumulation of knowledge is matched only by SOME other characters (bards and clerics namely), and since their power essentially comes from their knowledge, with years and years of near constant study packed into them, one would think it fitting that they be powerful.

Should wizards be frontliners, it gets back to everyone's personal opinion. Wizards are as powerful as the makers of DnD make them. Leanthar is trying to keep this world as close to PnP DnD as possible but there are restrictions (such as the massive amount of  Non-GM combat that goes on). Ultimately it's up to him, but I can only see voting toward getting rid of Tensers or lowering it's power a bit, if it will be replaced with Transmutation spells that have a progression to them.

Just my two pennies, a paperclip, a piece of string, and a ball of lint though. *snatches up the lint before jumping back onto his potatoe sack and sliding down the hole in the ground*

I'm definatly NG. I have my moral codes and everything, so it's not like I really ever drop into the "Chaotic" part of the spectrum. I follow the law as well, but I don't agree with quite everything and I do not want to get so attached to laws that I miss sight of the big picture. But for the most part I'm a good citizen.

As for good. Well, let's face it. I'm just good.  :)  That's not to say I don't have my mean streaks or anything, but definatly not enough to drop me into the neutral category (as far as the Good/Evil axis goes anyway). So yeah. Neutral Good.

Still haven't found that nice balance to my gaming yet. There was a time when I would spend more time on Layonara than I would on sports, with friends, and involved in my Youth Groups all put together. Now I'm barely here (though still here mind you!). I think I'm going to set up a little system for how often I should play. I mean, I'd hate to lose touch with Layonara. I've learned more here than I ever thought I would from online gamers (no offense er nuthin), but real life is kicking into gear and I guess it's time to get organized.
