General Discussion / RE: Your opinion on "powergaming"

By doing this you could justify the experience gained...  rather than doing laps through the Berghan Mountains. . .

I think maybe the real key is can you logically justify your actions with roleplaying. . .  if you can then it isn't powergaming...  if you can't well...

Just my two cp

I think these two lines hit it closest. Doing laps is powergaming. When i see a party or characters doing laps/camping a point, then the only reason they are there is for XP. This is what I cant stand seeing as a GM. Parties that I do see doing this will tend to get chase out ;)

Your actions should be justified by RP at all times, so when you go out hunting, what is the reason? if it is just to gain as much XP as possible, being an OOC figure and concept, this tends to be treading close to the line in my books. If you are desperately trying to think of RP justifications for your actions, then you really need to take a step back and consider how you are playing. This is a RP server afterall, and I think L has said many times that he has little interest in players who dont have time for RP. I know I certainly dont.

thats ny thoughts. Note I am speaking for myself, and my view of what Layo is, not the GM team or Leanthar.

General Discussion / RE: Sorcerer: How do we play them?
« on: April 11, 2005, 08:00:00 pm »
I certainly treat the sorcerer with more of that wild magic sense... especially a young one like Tom, has rather less control over his own magic. A sorcerers magic is inate, such that it comes from within them... and thus when Tom learns his magic, he is rather learning to harness and control what is within him, rather than learning to use a power.

My answers to the questions posed:

1. I dont think a sorcerer has to be any way mysterious or undefined. They are born with the ability to use magic, and this might mean their upbringing will turn them into mysterious people, but it doesn't mean they nesesarily are. It can be anyone, who just happens to have such an ability.

2. A wizards magic is learned through study, and hence the need of spellbooks. It is bred into the sorcerer. Both will be able to feel the weave, but for the wizard it is because they have been trained to see it. A sorcerer that does not know their abilities, might well not realise what they are sensing. Also, a wizard runs out of spells when he uses up what he memorises. The sorcerer runs out of spells when they use up the energy within them. It should therefore be tiring, and effort (especially for the inexperienced) to cast spells. As it comes from within, it is a part of them, and overuse should therefore be a real problem to the sorcerer. Tom who is not used to his magic, will often be unable to control it all as it flows out of him, and this inbalance will leave him tired and drained at best.

3. Sorcerers can know their spells by name, if it is taught. For example, a wizard might tell the sorcerer what it is he just cast. Tom, having not studied at all, and been given relatively little teaching, knows his spells by feel, not name, though he might learn the names. In casting the spell, the name is unimportant.

4. They sense the flow, and the weave within them. Casting magic by copying an incantation is the wizards way... as that is actually learning how to do it, like an apprentice might. A sorcerer will feel it within themselves. They might then see and learn the incantation, which will aid them form or concentrate the spell. In terms of identifying, there would be an element of both.

5. I think a sorcerer will only sense the inate magic in an item, if in-tune with the magic within themselves, such that they then recognise what they feel. I would say a Sorcerer should be very practiced in order to identify items like this. I would say that the majority would study artefacts like wizards in order to identify. My character Tom, is certainly not able to identify items, he has no lore skill. Remember that lore is knowledge, which implies learning and study.

6. A sorcerer would use items over his own magic dependant on taste and situation. Some would rather use their own, some would use the items, in an effort to either bolster their relatively weak inate power (for the sorcerer with limited inate ability), or in other cases to save themselves the effort and energy of casting. It should take effort and energy for a sorcerer to cast, especially if inexperienced. I would say that a sorcerer might sometimes be drawn to particular items that have correlation with their own magic, because posession and use of the item might feel good. Something that goes against their magic, might feel uncomfortable.

thats my input...

Nobody is accusing anyone here of powergaming, which is the result of a mis-read of a badly phrased line. The line was aimed to those newer (and older?) players here (nobody in particular) who do spend far too long trying to get their stats perfected.

the real thing to say here is... so what?! they are only stats! cant always be perfect... I dislike a perfected character in terms of stats, feats and skills.

I try and make my choices in level up and character creation to be dependant on what has happened in game as far as possible. e.g. someone spent a lot of time with Tom teaching him about his sorcery, learning to control it... for that level I therefore took sorcerer, with concentration points and spellcraft, to reflect the teaching. Also, the more he hides in town and plays tricks on people, the more likely he is to gain rogue levels for hide and move silently skills.

Roleplaying / RE: Leveling

speaking of levels is for sure where many new players struggle. It is actually easiest to simply not talk of them at all. There are no levels in RL when playing sport are there?...  the point to make really is that as your character gains experience you can RP that in general conversation quite effectively - your character has seen more combat, and so he can give better advice, and make his feelings of what can/cant be done easily better known.

I will just add my compliments here. Last night I was on my first ever GM run quest, and it was simply great. The RP was good (as it always is here :)) and a nice storyline. Especially I was astonished when we met a little halfling lass who would give us words of encouragement, and she recited a little of a poem I wrote a while back. I was like, hey that can't be what I wrote, but it really was...most incredible. Thanks to all for this great experience.

If you take an infinit number of monkeys and sit them infront of typewriters, one will eventually write the complete works of Shakespeare (provided you have enough bananas).

Similarly, if you take an infinite number of GM's one will eventually notice anothers poem and subconciously use it! (not that I did... I am no poet!)... provided you feed them enough peanuts.

Also, if you have an infinite number of monkeys, they will eventually turn into GM's.... and GM's will eventually turn into monkeys. Its a long cycle of natural progression.

(i better stop now!)

Layonara Server / RE: perma death
« on: February 03, 2005, 10:22:00 am »
I think its an excellent system. It adds importantly to the drawbacks of death, actually making people think twice befire charging headlong into a wall of swords. I still find death is too easy for most people.

The reality is that this system has little real consequence (only 1 perma-death so far) but a good deterrent effect.

I still think that after playing nwn for years, the best server I ever played on was a low-level perma-death server. Getting to lvl 5 was next to impossible, and took me about 6 months playing (and i was one of the handful who ever managed it - there was a system of PC questing in order to lvl, and XP rewards were generally tiny). Simply put, the adventure, and sheer drama of quests made ones heart pound! DM's were sometimes lenient on players who died, and you might sometimes get a resurrection... but these generally involved an entire rescue party being gathered by the survivors of the failed combat... in order for them to go back to pick up the bodies, and then transport them to the temple, where if they were lucky they might get a res from a DM. It was awesome alround. The death of a more prominent character would sometimes start server-wide IC hysteria!

Roleplaying / RE: why are you waving that sword at me sir?
« on: January 03, 2005, 09:53:00 am »
I have a nice little way of dealing with this in Tom, as a timid child - quite simply, if someone is brandishing weapons at Tom, he will be scared, and not come close, or trust that person.

Also, if that person is Helmed (or hooded such that the face is not easily visible), then Tom will simply not trust them as if they are brandishing a weapoon. For a character like him, who puts little faith in others words, nor has too much use for words himself, if he cant see the face and eyes clearly, you simply wont get him to trust you.

Brisbane and Tom spark an epithany in Plenarius, and with his drive for life suddenly renewed he states:

"All along my most valuable cause has been nature, and herein lies the epitome of nature. Two beautiful souuls who have touched me so much.
But it wont be just that i fight for, it will be what i live for, the welcoming hug of my boy, and the tender kiss of my love"

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / RE: Market Tables
« on: December 26, 2004, 08:35:00 am »
the point really is that its just a place to go where you can show that you have things for sale (wjether you lay them out or not)... otherwise you would have to go to each individual player you see in order to sell wares.

As far as crashing goes, I would make the rule of... tough luck! It should certainly stop people putting out any expensive items.

the table isn't all that essential... but laying a few out in a market square makes a big difference, simply as it helps to congregate people... and it gives a set place for people to sell things (i.e. a place for buyers to go). Instead of just setting up anywhere, there is a specific place which it is best to set up in. It also looks far better setting things out on a table rather than the floor. It also means you wouldnt have to continually shout out "stuf for sale" as each new person passes by... they will be able to see that you are tradeing... considering you would be standing by your stall.

As far as add ons go, it would be a very simple thing to do, literrally just adding those few objects to the Hlint area in the toolset... a 10 min job.

You guys are completely missing the point here...

I'm not talking abour Player Vendors at all... I'm saying that there should be some tables, so players can literally lay out their stuff, stand there and sell to the gathered crowds. Its the best PC market system I've seen on any server, Vendors included, and its great for RP.

what I am saying is literally, my character goes to the table/stand/stall put his stuff on the floor/table/stand/stall and starts shout "stuff for sale". Risks of losing everything on server crash is worth it anyway, as you would be a fool to put anything valuable out. The idea is that there is a place you can go and stand, in the town center, to sell your wares i.e. such that its obvious to other people know you are trading

The little boy, Tom, is talking to the amiable bard Ashley Windsong, the discussion which is about entertainment since Ashley has been asking if Tom would like to learn to play the pipes (to which Tom replies he much prefers the drums and trumpet). Tom begins to explain the reason for his liking of the drums, to Ashleys dismay... (have deleted toms usual nervous stammer from the text, Ashleys is very much on purpose :) ). Its a comic little anecdote, but it also underlines the trajedy that Layonara can hold (at least in this case, that of little Tom's background).

Tom    - Oh, I like the Hangins
Ashley -  Oh? Why... exactly... is that?
Tom    - Well, is fun... they lead 'em up an they tie the rope... 13 turns yer know
Ashley -...
Tom    - an push him onter the stage, an stand him on the bench... an pput the rope on him...
then they read out his crimes...
Tom    - an the crowd go "Oooh!" an "Aaaah!"
Tom    - When they say what he did... an they say he is condemned to death
Tom    - an... then the drum roll Trtrtrtrtrtrrrr Thump!
*Tom hangs his head and lets his tongue roll out*
Tom    - ... an everyone cheers!
Ashley - *stands silently* ... you know... there are... better ways to... be entertained...
Tom    - is lotsa fun
Ashley - there are lots of things out there... that don't... involve... people dieing...
Tom    - oh... well every bad man they hang... there's one less ter hurt me
Ashley - *thinks about that* I... suppose so...
Tom    - I knew some who got hanged too... good days them was
Tom    - I watched 'em to make sure
Ashley - err... Tom... do you mind if we... don't talk about this anymore?

I encountered this on another server, and it really worked extremely well in many respects. Whats more is its about as simple an add on as you can think of... all I'm suggesting is that some tables be added into Hlint town center set up roughly in the form of a market. This way any character who has goods to sell, can simply set up a market stall (the only risk being if the server crashes). With a player driven economy that Layonara has, I think this could be an excellent addition to Hlint, also giving Hlint a little more "town" flavour to it... and making player trade much more easy. It would also make a merhcant type character far more possible to play.
