and the affirmative statement "Okay" is NOT spelled O.K.
"Ok" is not how one spells "okay." I mentioned this above, but... I suppose I can't really be too harsh about this one. I don't believe there is an "officially correct" version, anyhow. I just find it harder to preserve my immersion when I'm having to parse lingo into real words. *coughs* The Associated Press Stylebook recommends the spellings "OK, OKd OKing, OKs" and states "do not use [the spelling] okay. (from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okay) I can appreciate your points about slang - especially internet slang. When it comes to spells its a bit more complicated. Spells have names and common spells would be known to most veterans, even if they aren't spellcasters. Still, I agree NEP, GMW etc should be avoided. Regarding English in general - please be mindfull of the fact that many players are NOT native english speakers. Punctuation, word order and (obviously) spelling differs from language to language. Many 'international' players won't be able to spell perfectly,always use the correct word order or use punctuation correctly. Then again, neither do most native English speakers.

Monkey (Japanese) Monkey as in Westward Journey (the Monkey King)? Danish TV showed a fantastic version in the eighties, most tv nerds, however, claim that version was made in Shanghai, so it might not be the same version. If it was - then I would love to see it again. Have you got a link for your version on DVD?

I have lived there while studying, but I didnt play layo there (I presume its mainland China). In fact "Wintersheart" is a translation of my Chinese QQ name. Are you there for work or study? Is it your first time in China? Where in China? *grins* You got me really curious now Jiayou! Edit: it wont let me post the characters...

*On route to Krashin aboard Fury of the Lady Doom Rolf is disturbed by an ignorant tourist while listening to Geir recounting the saga of Erik Droweater*
Tourist monk: Look dear, a traditional shaman. Oh what a big flail he carries and a cute holy symbol, it even resembles that of Mist - if albeit a bit primitive.
Tourist cleric: Yes it does - you think he will put on a show for us. A coin or two should suffice for such primitive people.
Tourist monk to Rolf:: Yus spirit man - yus talkses to big bear in skys?
Rolf: *stares in disbelief*
Tourist cleric: *Points to the sky* yus talkses?
Rolf: *looks up and sees a seagull perched on the main mast, then returns his gaze to the idiots*
Tourist monk: Yus dans big bear, mes givses yus big coin
Tourist cleric: *Holds out a small gold coin*
Rolf: *stares in disbelief *
Tourist monk: Look dear, he looks stunned, maybe he has never seen a gold coin before?
Tourist cleric: Mes givses yus gold, yus talkses big bear. *Starts doing a mock raindance on the deck*
Rolf: Yus walkses liks fishy?
Tourist monk:: *mumbles and looks up the Shadon guide to all things Krashin* yus walks liks fishy... Ah "do I/you swim?", what a strange thing to say!. Mes no fishy walkses.
*Loud splashes*
Rolf: Yus bestes learn fast!
Rolf to Geir: Sorry about that old friend, now what was it that Erik killed the fifth drow with?
Geir: His grandfather’s pipe, rather painful when used that way…
Rolf: Ah yes… Well do go on then
On a more serious note:
a) Had any players spoken like that on a quest on Krashin while I was a GM I would have had no qualms killing them.
b) So-called primitive languages are NOT simpler than civilised ones. In fact their grammar is often more complex and terms such as family relations is often far more precise than those of English – which would be the closest we have to common.
c) This type of portrayal of reeks of a stereotypical copy of Icewind Dales, which even “originally” was quite stereotypical (the term original should be used with great care when it comes to forgotten realms).

Leanthar - 6/23/2006 5:38 PM Then Winter you tried it for a short period of time and even quit the gm team and the world and your friends went with you. Talk about burn out. That is exactly what happens in that sort of position and I think the proof is right here and right now what you guys are doing.
One point of clarification, I enjoyed the grievance work and it probably kept me in longer if anything. So, please don’t talk burnout on behalf of other people.

Sadly very little has been created for them but we do have a few stories ready for the next handbook. If you have something write it up and send it to Edtheket. If it is accepted we will get it in to the handbook--but no promises.
Meizter and I did a BIG write up on Krashin with culture and all. Ed has it and I know Aragwen liked it very much and wants us to help him expand it. Rolf Bjoernsen (my char), Geir Sigurdson and Skarp-Heiden Sigurdson are all from Krashin. In fact the Raven Trade Company started as an all Krashinite business. Mixafix did a lot of stuf for Geir and Skarp's CDQ. The Voice of Mist (also done by Meizter and I) is specifically tied to Krashin culture. Combine that with the background we wrote and you have a pretty comprehensive background for Krashin characters. /Wintersheart
