NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: True strike
« on: May 05, 2010, 04:46:54 am »
I'm not realy going to add anything that haven't already been said. But i will show a few examples.

30 ab for a lvl 24 monk is quite normal.

16 base, dex + 6 (+1 dex every fourth lvl) so total 22 base. If he have max out at cap 12 dex with items he will have 34 in dex. Thats + 12 in AB.

Base attack for monk is lvl 24 is 17. So 17+12 is 29.

+ 1 for unarmed weapon focus and then + 3 for gloves. Total 33.

But this is if he maxes out his dex with items wich is unlikely if he doesn't get a caster throw cats grace on him.  Monks have quite low AB but they make up for it by having only -3 ab on thir secon, third and fourth attack instead of all the others that have -5 ab..

lvl 20 pure mage vrs a lvl 20 fighter.

With true strike a mage can rise their AB with 20. an fighter will have 10 higher ab then the pure mage at lvl 20 so then after casting TS the wizard still have 10 higher then the fighter. Yes the fighter will have spend more on his str and weapon focus to raise AB but thats not going to make up the 10 AB in different.

Fighter. 20 (base) + 11 (for his maxed out str bonus if he have total 32 in str) +4 for mithril weapon and weapon focus. Total of 35 AB.

Wizard 10 (base) + 7 (for maxed out str if base is 12). + 4 for GMW + 20 true strike. Total 41 AB.

Other things to raise AB like bless, aid and so forth aplys to both.

In this example with no multiclassing the wizard becames much better. and if you multiclass him it will just get redicolous.

With 8 wiz lvls before 20 and rest lvls spend in high AB class he will have base AB of 16 with 4 attacks each round. Hasted 5 attacks.

Ex: Fighter 5/duelist 7/ wizard 8. total 20 lvls.

An elf could have base 20 dex and 18 int. With his bonus feats from fighter lvls he can afford a few mele feats. This means that this combo with true strike would pre epic be better then then all pure mele oriented characters that are 10 lvls higher. After this charcters reach epic lvls in wizard it will just get out of proportion. In my opinion its to big of a difference as it is today. As Pibemanden said with Tensers an high lvl wizard already is extremly strong. Now I only compares the AB. But as Pibermanden said with 75% concealment and other wizard buffs/spells its easy to see how much better an spellcaster would be then an fighter character.

I can agree on that 9 sec is a bit short. But the spell is to powerfull to be any longer.. One way to make it more usefull is to lower the power of it to +10 AB and then making it a bit longer. But realy.. I don't think wizards need any more powerfull buffs/spells that make them even more powerfull..

« on: March 03, 2010, 05:52:06 am »
My Boon Loom Character have 74 deaths and 13 ss. He is lvl 29. Out of his last 6 deaths he got 4 ss.. So from being quite confiden't by only having 9 dt he got 4 more in just a couple of weeks..

So if there is an lvl 30+ on the server with only 1 ss lost it seems to be a little unfair... lol..

I agree in having 10 damage reduction armour. Its having 10 resistance armour I think is to good/high.

Anyways this is only one way to make it a little better for non casters. Shields, weapons and other gears could all be needing som upgrades. One quite upgrade have been made but scince the playerbase is getting to higher lvls one more would not hurt :)

But as Chongo stated earlier the thing that realy would make any difference here is changing the spawns/adding areas with smaller spawns. It will always be difficoult for non-casters to solo aslong the spawns are huge. Spellcasters with area effects spells can controll huge mobs, mele fighters cannot.

I'll try to be clearer.

What I was trying to say is that a melee lacks the tools to keep mobs occupied. He has no skill or feat to use to gain and keep the attention of a hostile creature.

Sure while soloing it doesn't matter as much as you'll be surrounded anyway, but all melee builds cannot be expected to perform equally good while soloing.

DDs have DR if built for it, but without a tanking mechanism they're actually sub-par companions, because they've sacrificed melee prowess (STR -> AB) to gain those few points of DR. Anything with rogue will be much more helpful in a party and even limitedly in soloing, a more vulnerable offensive build might just outlast through elimination.

So my point was that DD's have one thing going for them: Sneak Immunity. But even that is limited and can easily be negated.

Fighters in general would gain a lot from damage negation increases and given that there is no real mechanism to keep mobs on a DR stacked PC, there is no danger of overpowering any specific build either.

I get what you are saying now. It is so that the fighter classes in general have no tools realy to keep mobs occupied as you say. Thats the same for all mele classes. And the way it should be.

I think the main focus here was to find ways in making fighter classes a little better when soloing and not in partys.

Making better armours for fightertypes will help. The "weakest" classes are the pure fighter and the little better fighter/rogue splitt. Armour that will help them take a little more damage would be nice. DD builds are a strong in DR as it is. The curve in how DR progress in the end is massive.

Lets take another class combo instead of DD so you don't think I'm just picking on your class sOulz ;)

Fighter/Duelist/wizard: With mithril clothing giving/-10 He will have 30 ponits of DR with Greater Stoneskin. Thats simply to high..

At lvl 33 He can have the feat Epic warding and have 60 in DR and thats crazy.. Only for 2 minutes though but still.. Thats one long battle. In Tensers form (+ 10 AB), fully buffed, 75% concealment, High AC, hasted and so forth he would be pretty much immortal. Right having 55% as it is now instead of 60% Isn't a huge different. Both are on the scale ridicolusly high :)

The classes with high DRed.. will benefit to much from items that also grant /-10 resistance. My opinion and i fully understand you think different.

Unfair that armours with high DRed.. instead of high Dres..wan't be any good for DR builds? Well having other types of armours that will grant extra con, str or higher AC +5 or so that will help DD builds will adress that issue :) DD builds will still be much stronger/better then pure fighter when soloing..

That is a naive way of looking at it, sure. First of all, I've aimed for something like this a long time and yes, a damage reduction build is powerful when surrounded by hordes of enemies or when AB is so high that AC doesn't matter.

However going for damage resistance requires heavy investment and basically makes you a one trick pony because of one serious flaw that melee characters of a tank archetype (DR builds) have - no CC. They have no way of keeping things hitting them, sure they can go in first, but after a few seconds the mob dissipates on your groupmembers and beyond KD there's nothing you can do.

So in this respect, every build is powerful is built to the extreme as per your example, however limiting your character like this is far from rewarding given the long pay-off period. That's also the reason why I think we've seen no Dev Crit yet, it's not worth limiting your character so severely for it.

Yea I doubt we will ever see an Dev crit on Layo.

I'm not sure I completely getting what you are saying sOulz, what do you mean they have no CC and having no chanse of keeping things hitting them?

Anyway the way I see it getting to the higher ends of damage reduction is the most powerfull thing for a mele fighter type. High AC is good but as Akata earlier stated she got an PC that have extremly high AC, especialy buffed due to the double int AC modifyer.. She will eventually get hurt and hit anyway because of all the 20s they will roll will tear her appart.

The more regular build for example pure fighter or fighter/rogue splitt have neither High AC or damage reduction. So I think that armours that could be for better bennefits for those types but that will not help DD would be more balanced.

Lets say the fighter have an 10 soak armour and also There could be items that grant /-5 resistance. Totaly he shrugs of 15 points of mele. This wan't be extremly powerfull but it would be helpfull. The 10 soak armour wan't help the DD but he can instead use an /-5 resistance armour.

This will prevent the DDs getting so extremly high mele toleration but still help the regular fighter types to stand a better chanse in battle :)

As for Mithrils... make it Damage Resistance Piercing/Slashing/Bludgeoning /- 10... right across the board.

I agree in making armours better but making Mithrill have damage resistance /-10 across the board is to strong. This because when this is stacked with damage reduction it will be redicilous.

Example a Pure caster or fighter/caster splitt that have greater stoneskin will ignore the first 30 points of damage. Lets say he is fighting foes that makes 35 in damage when they hit. He can take like 100 hits.

An Dwarven defender at lvl 32 will have 22 lvls in DD thats 15 damage reduction + 9 from epic damage reduction + 10 resistance from mithril.
Thats 34 points of damage that he will ignore. Pretty much immune to mele since he also is immune to sneak attacks. At lvl 40 he can shrug off 40 ponts of damage. Its not many creatures on Layo that deals 50+ damage whithout sneak so with his 800 HP he could do anything :)

You might think that what big of difference is the last 5 points.. 10 instead of 5? The difference is HUGE! The DD at lvl 32 that is fighting foes that dealing in average 40 points of damage can take almost twice as many hits. He looses 6 instead of 11 HP every time he gets hit. And the 32 lvl DD have like 600 HP so there wouldn't be many creatures that could kill him.

Armour with resistance in my opinion should never be higher then /-5. However the best epic armour with damage reduction could, and should have atleast 10 of damage reduction :)

I agree in most of this. Realy the weapon and armor system is in some way broken. And remodelling the stats on them would make things more balanced.

But I don't think that making armours and swords better will make a big difference regarding making it possible for high lvl fighters to solo.

I'm sure that most fighters here don't ask for much but it would make a big difference to be able to take on a few challanges here and there in the world without being smashed instantly when you are on your own. I defently think that most areas should be impossible to solo if you are a fighter but as it is now for fighters there are pretty much nowere you can solo/kill a single creature and get a decent amount of xp for it if you are high lvl fighter. If you don't like rolling the dices against the soulmother for a few houndred xp then you need a spellcaster to buff you up and ward you and point you in the right direction.

One way to avoid redoing all the spawns on layo is to add small spawns, 2-3 creatures that are build in ways so fighters can handle them in the outer ranges in alot of areas. Challanging but doable. These can be picked of by sneaking rouges and tuff fighters whithout getting a whole mob of 10 creatures swarming you.

Also non magic areas. Maybe add 1-2 dungeons/caves that are non magic areas. These dungeons should be placed so most fighters and avery rouge could sneak/ get to them and test their skills in :) As many stated before the it should also be more challanges for rouges so maybe put som rooms with locks and areas in these caves/dungeons with traps and so forth..

Thunder Peaks was great but it doesn't need to be that grand.. just a few places to go to would make a huge different.. :)

But on the dead magic... my contention for a long time was that no matter how easy, or how soloed, the peaks were, the pace was so impressively slow compared to other areas, where haste and mass-effect spells were basically requisite for travel and thus added a huge multiplier to pace of progression, and where there were mobs of 8 instead of small groups of two or three... that it really wasn't changing the tempo of progression at all.  The prevailing opinion disagreed.

Hope this wasn't too trollish.  :)

Everyone that have tested to play an spellcaster lvl 17 and higher and also a fighter character lvl 17 and higher knows that after around lvl 15 the progression for the spellcaster will be something like twice as fast. This because the spellcasters can hasted throw their massive area spells and get huge number of XP in short time on their own.

When fighters finally got the same chanse up in the peaks.. Not that easy as for spellcasters.. working it slow.. killing one by one hacking through and not being hasted people are saying its something wrong with the area and that that shouldn't be doable. *shrugs*

I think thats unfair. Fine if the team don't wan't this server to be a place were you can soloing. But in that case almost every area were magic works should be shanged so that spellcasters can't soloing either. Mixed spawns with extremly high saves, high spellresistance and so forth..

Historically this servers have alot more high lvl spellcasters then fighter types. Due to Thunder peaks the playerbase becamed a little more balanced. I think that is a good thing :)

But as to fighters soloing the peaks, well as I was a GM during the hey day of the peaks I will say that they were heavily abused by a number of players.

I was playing alot with my fighter during this time and was soloing this area. I don't see how this is abusing though. This was the only place I could soloing without instantly dying or get zero XP for my efforts. Spellcasters can soloing in all of the rest of the world and they are doing so. Is that abusing?

The fighters that was soloing the area did it because there were the only place they could go. Ofcourse id rather go in a group and mostly I did that. Also the most fun places is in the existing magic areas. However when no mages/clerics are around the option were crafting, sit on a bench, go to areas that gives zero xp or soloing the thunderpeaks.

I can see the point of thinking... hey! that fighter are soloing that area all day long. Well he had no other place to go to so atleast he had one area that he could have some fun in.

Also Thunderpeaks was an awesome place to go to and Kudos to Agaetis for that :-)

I haven't been playing for over a year now but I like this place alot and have spend thousands of hours in this world.

What to do to make this world not dying... instead get in fresh new blood and a fun place for adventures and RP?

Make it easier for newbies to start playing here. Maybe many of the rules should instead be guidlines. After time the new player will learn more about the world and all the rulez..

Make it easier to submitt a new character.

Make a "new" Hlint there all the players can chill out, meet up, RP and have as starting point for adventuring. This means It should be easy for all Lvls to get to other places in the world from this point. Like having a port to alot of different places on both servers and an harbour. This would defently do so that the servers don't feels so empty when you log on.. easier to meet new friends and so forth..

Do this server just wan't to have players that can devote tremendous amount of time into this game or should it be fun and giving for everyone? including them that can maybe play for 2-6 hours/week? I think PnP are on to something here. A small amount of XP based on time.

More small NPC quests like the ones you can do when you are low lvl. Saving a prisioner, Killing a thief that roams the forest, Deliver a package to a king and so on.. This is great things for the new players and it shouldn't stop there. Why not make new and harder ones also for higher lvl players?

I like Layo alot because of the RP and when you play in it you are IC and not OOC like in other Hack n slash worlds. But If you have a job, a family and also a RL you don't get that many hours/week to play and when you play you might wanna have some action and go out and killing stuff. Its most fun in an party and this not exclude RP but doing both works fine. This community have a tendence to point fingers at the Hack and slashers and say thats bad, wrong and ugly. Why as long you stay In character, RP along the way, inerract whith other players? There must be room for those who don't can, or wan't to attend quests, make a mark in the world or sit on a bench and talk about plots.. - co-existens. Otherwise the a lot of players especially new players will just feel this is an exclusive club where they are not welcomed in. Instead of letting them having fun and after a while the ones that wanna be more involved will do that because they wan't to.. not because they are being forced.

One funny thing. Its ugly to hack and slash to gain XP so you can advance fast in lvls. But its not ugly to Craft all day long to advance fast in the crafting XP ladder? Why is that? Realy? An hack and slasher in a party RP more then a crafter that collects CNR and hanging in crafthalls all day.. Although I like doing both of these things so nothing bad against all the crafters out there :P

I have attendet alot of Quests but many of them I feel that I haven't contributed that much. Several reasons for this. I type very slow! English is not my mother language so often I don't understand things. However in some quests I have been very active and one of my funniest Layo moments is from a quest =)

So my conclusion would be. Yes I wan't to have the living breathing world. But for that sake does that means that I can't be a champion and go out and kill giants whithout someone point fingers?

The rusian team playes the best fotball I have watched for ages.. When we lost against them (Sweden) I was first ofcoursed disapointed on our own team.. But I truely thought that Rusia was the better team that match.. And now after watching the game against Holland I'm in love in the Rusian way of playong football.

They are entertaining to watch and they might not have the best individuals but as a team they have showned the best football this far in the tournament. I'm looking forward to their next match :)

Not sure when that was changed then , when i looked all that time back it still said it required 28 ( which i can get to ) and i haven't seen anything indicating it was changed :(

That , together with "chosen weapon " giving others the opportunity to take " overwhelming criticals " and with that opening up " devastating criticals " reduces a "weapon-master" to a simple fighter that is 3 points faster then a " normal " fighter at lvl 13 WM lvl's .

nice to hear the "weapon-master " has been reduced to just that :( , no wonder no-one takes more then 7 lvl's in it ( since you can afford to miss the last +1 on attacks if you can switch it for "epic damage reduction " ...a feat fighters get ...but weapon-masters don't )

Dear Jan

Getting epic lvls in WM is not a waste. At lvl 20 WM ( that you will soon be)you will have All the WM benefits, + 7 AB more then a regular fighter, and also you have gotten 3 bonus feats at lvl 13,16 and 19. This means your fighter have extremly high AB and can hit almost everything. Or he can stand in Improved expertise and have +10 AC and still have a good hit ratio due to his high AB ;)

As others have stated. No matter what the bonus feats are in Lore for the specificik class. If you don't have the prerequisite for it you won't be able to choose them.

So if you don't planning to multiclass Barion more and take a third class I would say keep on trucking whith WM lvls... He will be the meanest Bloody swordsman on Layo.. In epic battles when fighting the big Boss or dragons the rest will be hitting air while Barion is bringing it down on it knees whith his Criticals hits..

All classes are allowed to take Overwelming crit and Dev crit aslong as they meet the prerequisite for it. Problem is that Overwelming crit isn't that big of deal.. its more or less a speedbump for taking the precious Devestating Crit.

But since Dev crit is extremly powerful Layo have changed the prerequisite from 25 in base str to 30. This means You need to invest tons of feats in great strenght to get it and its simply not whorth it..

Atleast not in my opinion ;)

I have Actually been thinking of making an Monk/Dwarven defender :)

Would be such a cool Dude.. However due to Monks restriction I either must wait until epic lvls untill i can start taking DD lvls. Or if I settle whith just a few monk lvls and start taking DD before 20 But then I get too few Monk lvls cause of the fact I can't take any more of them later on... And he would be verry crippled... Bummer.
