General Discussion / Re: Which Classes are LEAST represented in Layonara?
« on: January 02, 2010, 02:34:18 am »
Under used : Pure classes , with the exception of wiz/sorc/cleric.

Abundant : multi-classed and wiz/sorc/cleric.

Look for any post on differences between classes and you'll find out why things are as they are .

Invest the most what?  Feats?

Feats - skills - ability stats , to even be able to take the WM class .

Just before we expand more on balance of classes.  I'd like to say that this thread is about Weapon specialization for WM, right?

It is and by showing that WM's dont get as much as everyone seems to think i hope to show that an extra free feat wont be as bad as they think :)

Don't forget you need 13 DEX for Dodge and Mobility and that Intimidate is a cross class skill for Fighters, and most other Melee Base classes

the only one not using either dodge or mobility is battleranger , so i figured i would give them that since all others require the 13 DEX ;)

What I mean is that for 7 levels of investment in the class you acquire abilities that greatly improve melee performance in comparison to other classes.

In this sense, giving another free perk or feat to the class would even further make the class overpowered.

Sure, one can argue, that there is a long list of feat requirements, but Fighters have the cure for it. Especially in Layonara, where keen (essentially a WM's biggest free feat) is extremely hard to come by.

Five classes that i know are played and in my eyes are melee characters .

These are the facts directly from LORE and if you ask me , then Weaponmaster has the worst deal off all .
They have to invest the most and get only 1 feat more then DD , who only have to invest 2 feats .

( only went to max lvl 7 with extras , since you mentioned that those are all the lvls you need with WM , if you look at lvls higher you will see that the difference in extras even becomes greater . )

I'm not talking about Melee vs Mage, I'm talking about the perks of the class versus the required investment. Besides, WM is supposed to be an extension of the Fighter class, so any fighter wanting to become a Weaponmaster could and quite rightly should pick up Weapon Specialization.

Could you please explain what you mean by " the perks of the class versus the required investments " ?
Sorry if it is obvious what you mean , but English isn't my native language and i have no idea what you mean by " perk " .

Weaponmasters are borderline overpowered as it is for Layonara, so I'd say we keep things as is. There is a point where realism must subside to mechanic balance.

Realism when looking at the chars played on Layo , is that chars with magic or other special abilities are the ones that are overpowering on the server , not the fighters .

I know this will be answered with " fighters die more often and therefor perm sooner , but maybe its time that the normal way off things in fantasy get re introduced onto Layo .

The world started out as low magical one , but lets face it , that was long ago and the world has changed to one where magic rules .

If it is possible to let a magic user run around with 600+ hit-points , 44 ac , 75% hidden , with summons and spells - then why not re introduce the most powerful things fighters could have , devastating critical ?

Just as the spell-caster had to take every available feat he could to reach the stats , so would be the case for the fighter to get to devastating critical .

There are plenty monsters that are immune to critical hits anyway , so the fable off " devastating critical with great cleave is far to overpowering " can be set back in the closet to never be used again ( forgetting the fact that great cleave only would work if the monster died in one hit - that means : crit hit has to be rolled and the monster must fail its save and that goes for every next monster )

At this point, no.  It has long been our policy to not restore deleted characters for any reason. This is something we've stated even with LORE in place.

Character deletion is a player choice, and that choice is essentially "I don't want to play this character here any longer." People do it for various reasons, but it has long been portrayed as a rather permanent choice.

IF (and right now, it's only an "if") it was decided that the data in LORE could be used to restore a previously deleted character, it is rather certain that we would not consider the testimonies of others for any other equipment.

Again, the handling of deleted characters is nothing new, and as they currently stand, the new policies do not override the way we handle them.

Understood

But if the reasons to leave this world would be directly linked to the rules / handling off the rules , then i can understand that people would like to dig up their chars now that the rules have changed .

The need to have a WL/GM in your party / online , to get a SS loss reimbursed is now gone .
The party lvl restrictions are gone , giving people more slack to travel with characters , so the fear of a reprimand when showing around others is lessened .

Those changes - for me anyway - have made it interesting again to give the world a new try .
The thought of needing to start from scratch ( no matter how interesting to others ) is not something i'm looking forward too though .

So just thought i'd ask if its possible to return with a char that technically hasn't permed and who's body was never found .

" Returning of a previously permed character that has not been deleted from our server vault (see special note below) "

Does this mean that deleted characters can not be returned ?

Or can they be returned using the LORE page and testimonies off others collaborating on the main items in their gear/ inventories ?

Really had fun reading that :)

We at the other well never precisely knew what was happening while we fought off the demons , would be fun if someone has logs from that to put them here too ;)

Good idea Chongo , throw in the restriction that the houses only should be sold to chars not involved in a guild or organisation and you make me wish i thought off it earlier ;)

Both Barion and myself as a player on this world would be best described with a song made by Queen : Another one bites the dust .

** a pair off adventurers arrive at 180 Haven , they carry the remains off a full plate marked with Rofirein signs . Their faces are somber as they hesitate to knock on the door . Finally one reaches over and knocks . As the door is opened , they step back after putting the remains off the full plate on the ground . " We come with sad tidings M'Lady " they look to Solarina " The man leading us down to diamonds , adamantium and kobalt ...the man known as Barion Firesteed ....* he looks down * ...he fell protecting us ...and never returned . We went to the stone we know he was bound ..but his soul never returned to claim his body ...*he sighs deep * ...we are sorry Miss "

//he didnt perm , but i cant find the will to play with him for a while now . I'll be requesting a char deletionrequest when i'm emotionaly ready to say a final goodbye to him :(

General Discussion / Re: Different levels traveling together..

I don't know about how much work it would take , but there is a solution to both the " leeching " and the " too high level items pick-up "

I don't know a thing about coding or anything other needed , but i'm sure it could be worked into the game to have items higher then  " x "  levels above the characters level , to disappear from their inventory .

Just like it probably is possible to have the exp be lowered to " 0 " if the level gap is too big .

If that would be implemented , it would free up the level restrictions between characters because there will be nothing " exceptional " to gain any more .

I know in the past there always came the same answer : " this would interfere with the gm-driven quests and the exp that can be earned on them "

My thoughts are and always have been to that : the exp earned on quests is handed out at the end by the GM , if " no exp to be gained during the quest " is holding people away from quests then they don't go on quests for the RP but for exp .

Just my two true .

General Discussion / Re: multi classing question
« on: October 12, 2008, 02:52:57 am »
@ chongo

The difference between classes that use weapons as main means of doing damage ( fighters and the likes ) and classes that use knowledge ( wizards and the likes ) is possibly even bigger then the example off sprinter and pole vaulter .

When using weapons you train to become faster and stronger to help you get rid off your opponents as fast as you can .

When using knowledge you train your mind ( i'm sure i'm not explaining this right in these words , but i hope you see where i am going )

Any person can tell you that once you diminish your physical training and replace that with sitting and learning from books , you will lose speed , strength and agility over time .

Of course you try to keep up with your old training , but there are a set number off hours in a day , so you would need to train less in what you knew and use the time gained to study in the new things .

Yeah well, it's a game, not RL ;)

*grins* Yup , but wouldn't it be nice to have things like this represented ic ?

That could range from penalties on previous skills learned to bonuses for those that don't multi class and stay faithful to their original calling ;)

( bonuses for prestige classes stop at a certain level , encouraging people to take up other things because there is more to win in another class and nothing to be lost in the class they choose first )

Each multiclassing character indeed gets a penalty, of ECL +1 per new class (max 2). This means they own less or just 1 experience from easier monsters, and of course, they are not as rough or potent as a character of their level that has only one class, meaning a wizard/druid/cleric could probably solo some areas on Belinara, but I do know Chakar can't, cause he just does not sport the firepower :)

I know it gets harder to gain exp when multi classing , but skills already gained stay at the level you are .
So you stop training ( or diminish training ) to learn other things , but you keep every advantage you earned .

That is something like : you once could run the 100 meter in 10.21 seconds and even though you dropped your training rate to once a month , a year later you still run it in 10.21 second ?

Would be nice , but is impossible :D

Once your focus shifts , your former training rate wont keep you at the level you were .
