it's not and as you put it ... 'you darn well know that'.  But this isn't the placr to discuss it.

Apologies to 'Ebonith' for starting this ... I am just feeling slightly P'd at the moment.

Blackguard does show in the class selection when levelling (perhaps it cant be disabled), it is listed as any Evil, so apart from the GM's not approving it I can't see any reason for it not to be allowed.  It certainly isn't an uber-class and not like the PnP version, but it does hold lots of RP value.  And why not?  Good have their Paladins, so why shouldn't evil have their Blackguards.

Unholy Champs show up the same as Blackguards (any evil).  But, I do agree that if you read the description in the handbook, then these should be restricted.  After all, you can't have a PC talking directly to a deity.  Although I wouldn't mind :)  This is why I was wondering whether ther Unholy Champ in the handbook is a single entity with a title and is separate to the class, otherwise I don't understand why the class was even created.

Anyway, thanks for the info guys.

happens all the time .. my usual experience is...

25% = make first time or 1 in 2
45% = make 1 in 3
65% = make 1 in 4
75% = make 6 in 10

the other day i was smelting some platinum with 70-80% and i failed about 10-11 times in a row and today making silver arrows with 50% i failed 3 in a row .. gah! sometimes it is sooo annoying

but, then you have those sweet days ... like when i made my iron fullplate, with 10% and made it on my second attempt and made a plat chainmail on my first attempt.

hehe .. i am sure it is GM driven and they watch us suffer for fun!!!!

Dorganath - 3/11/2006  5:26 PM  p>Layonara is designed with groups in mind, so you don't have to have a character who can just tear through whatever's in his/her way.  I'd rather have an interesting, versatile character who is weaker than one who is built for a singular purpose.  In my personal opinion, the latter lacks depth, as it is driven by numbers, not personality.
I totally agree with this .. Moonlight and Eamane are a very strong pair.  Moonlight is your basic bash 'em fighter and Eamane is a sorceress.  Eamane on her own, is relatively weak and does struggle to solo at times.  Moonlight can in many areas, but so many she cant.  But, bring them together and they are very strong and compliment each other totally.  Moonlight will guard and protect while Eamane blasts them with AoE spells, and Eamane will buff Moonlight so she can go rampaging through hordes of monsters.  Alone, they have weaknesses, but together they are a force to be reckoned with.   And they are much stronger and better personalities for it I think.

There are actually a reasonable number of fighter/wiz .. or at least used to be .. and apart from the swapping of int/cha, the concept isnt that far apart. other than you have to be far more careful with your spell selections.

You haven't mentioned what split you were looking at, but personally, I would make more of the sorc levels and use fighter just to boost the fighting ability a bit ... 15/5 -> 12/8 ... why not 10/10? because of greater stoneskin! if you are gonna melee at all with your fighter/sorc then you need greater stoneskin.

hmmm .. bows are good, but if you are gonna specialize in bow and use spells for buffs, then why not go Arcane Archer later?  If you are determined to use the bow, then why not chat in-game to the likes of Jacchri or Talan, who are both AA's .. even if you don't become an AA and stay Fighter/Sorc, they could probably help you with the bow feats, stats and spells.

If not, I would got with a fighter/sorc wielding a great big 2-handed sword or dual-wielding.  Dual-wielding is great, especially if a high-dex build ... and the potential for criticals, knockdowns, etc is so much more improved.

Just try and keep things open as RP can seriously affect what you end up becoming.  I know my path has changed with Moonlight and Ravenne, because of in-game experiences and so have many others.

You know I'd like to see Cha played full stop...not saying that people don't but I am often amazed by how many Cha 10 people describe themselves as stunning or beautiful. Sorry, but at Cha 10..you ain't...your average.

Actually, this is wrong ... you could be extremely beautiful, stunning in fact, but have no charisma.  The attribute isn't particularly about the way you look, but the way you are perceieved and your ability to communicate and influence people.

And, yes, Moonlight is stunning!  I picked the head because of it :P  But she isn't a big communicator and usually just nods, giggles/chuckles or gives short replies.  So she does have a low charisma in how she interacts.  So some of us do try and rp the charisma, but it is hard to do and only realy comes to light in gm events, when Moonlight would fail miserably if she even tried.

hmmm ... interesting!

Wearing dark scary clothes?  Well, I see an awful lot of so-called good people wearing black clothes as well.  Although I'm not evil, I do follow what I would call a dark path.  Yes, I wear black!  But, then I have always worn black, even in the early days of being a goody-two-shoes.

Growling, glaring and yelling?  Funny enough, I have never been threatened at or yelled at my any evil person.  Most try and keep to themselves.  I have, however, been threatened by so-called good people.

As I have said, I am walking a darker path than I was, but ... as of yet I have performed no evil, nor spoken of performing any evil.  I pretty much keep to myself and am indifferent to most people.  I just try and walk by people as though I don't exist.  Yet, lately, you would think I had become a mass-murderer or something.  It is the so-called good people that want to cause the trouble and won't let people be.  Even if they aren't evil!!!

Perhaps they should learn how to play good as well?

Do you need a reason to follow Corath? of course!  But then you do for any god, or you should at least.  People pick a deity and most don't really know why their character would choose that god.  So it's not just evil people that need help.

Corath says kill, so I kill?  Well, actually, if you were a true follower you would!  He demands obedience from his followers and failure is not tolerated.  So a true follower is at the whim of the priests/priestesses really.  But then, how is this different to good?  Paladins kill who they are told!  Are the people you kill, innocent or deserving of death?  Well, that is based on the viewpoint of your deity.  How many thousands or millions of innocent deaths have been caused through history because of religeon?

Ultimately though, why play evil?  Because it is fun and requires much more RP! Your character has to have a more in-depth bio or dev thread to get approved to even start moving that way.  And, yes, you do need to show a reason your character is starting to turn evil and it happens over quite a long period of time.

You can't just point the finger at us evil-wannabes and say we need help!  I see so much poor RP out there, but that is okay because they are good!  So it doesn't matter!

I have a love of killing! Not just battle, but killing! The taking of anothers life! I see no good, evil, justice or injustice, in the lives I take. They are simply lives, extingished in the stroke of a blade. My blade! I am told it is wrong to kill for pleasure. Others kill to train or to get resources for their crafting. Am I not just being honest as to why I kill? I train hard with my blade. The clash of swords is a true test of my skill, butultimately, the death of my enemy is the true testament of my skill.

General Discussion / RE: Pure classing vs. Multi classing
« on: March 04, 2006, 10:43:47 am »
Early is based on your characters perceived experiences.  Later can actually be a truer reflection of your characters development.

I had/have a characater Sy'Ravenne. she started off like as a barbarian and was going to be a barbarian/bard/skald, but due to how much she enjoyed fighting, her general recklessness and interactions with certain characters she was trained in the use of a Katana and became a Barbarian/Fighter.

Moonlight started as a fighter, with the intention of becoming a WM, although I had to keep a dev and RP her that way.  But due to in-game relationships and developmensts, I don't see her staying WM long-term.  There is another path she may take that will suit her better, but it will all depend on RP and development.

But, basically speaking .. I have found my characters have developed because of in-game RP and not necessarily followed the path I had in mind for them.  I also believe this is a much more realistic development path and more interesting.

Actually, I think that Weapon Master is that great, and whirlwind isn't.

Whirlwind is fun to use... but it only really works against lower level enemies since you can be surrounded by
them and not take huge amounts of damage while taking them out with 2-3 attacks.  When you get to the
harder opponents that surround you, it is more of a "last ditch effort" to hope you survive bringing too many
enemies at the same time and would probably not be used (since you give up the other attacks that round
when you use it).

WM is not "great" at the lower levels, but when you hit level 5 in WM and bump your critical to x3 from x2, etc.
you can start dealing massive damage with criticals.  Combined with Improved Critical, it can be devastating.
Further, when you get to level 7 in WM, your critical threat range goes up +2 as well, effectively making a
WM w/ Rapier have a critical range of (14-20?) with Imp Crit and WM 7.  That's hitting (bad math may occur
here) about 40% of the time with a x3 critical hit.  Ouch!

There are disadvantages as well... you are giving up the fighter bonus feats (if you were a fighter) while you
take the levels in WM (since only epic WM's get bonus feats) and the first few levels give you very minor
benefits (Ki Damage, etc.)

I'd love to hear from the more experienced WM's out there to see if I am totally wrong...

Totally right .. it's only past L7 that it gets really cool and you lose an awful lot of feats because of it.  The feats you would miss taking, probably wont help you kill any quicker (except 2-h fighting) but they sure could protect you better and make you a more rounded character.  Everyone always overlooks the Barbarian/Fighter .. a potentially uber-class with huge life, dr, extra strength .. can go head-to-head with the WM any-day i would say.  To be honest, most of us build WM's wrong .. they should be about dual-wielding weapons that have huge crit-range and using devastating critical .. that is what WM's are really about --->  Hit! Crit! Crit! Hit! Crit! Crit! Crit! Crit! Crit! oh, and Hit! again.

Whirlwind is a cool feat and looks great.  Very useful for standing in the middle of pack of ogres!  But, I dont think anyone would realisitically get it if it wasn't for WM.  Hmmm .. unless you had a weapon with some sort of effect like stun .. then WW would be extremely useful.  Expertise!  Now that is an awesome feat!  So useful!

But, all this said, WM adds to the RP value of your character.  A fighter is a fighter, no real RP required.  The WM needs dedication and training.  It's like playing a Ranger, it's all about the RP.

Just before you PK or get real annoyed with anyone but Pig calling you Islime, you have introduced yourself to others but it. At least Surdy has been introduced by that name, he has never heard you use Moonlight when asked. And yes he has asked, thought it is some time ago....

Please note, I said ... "So please STOP calling her Isilme when you don't know her!" ... with the emphasis on not knowing her.  If she knows you, she will politely tell you of the change.  If she doesn't know you, why are you calling her by her name?  My problem is with people using her name because they see it above her head.  It has happened to you many a time .. I even think I have been guilty of it.

What bout players who force their characters down the path of Evil ignoring their current alignment?  that's metagaming?

This is the way things work on Layonara.  If people could create a character Evil to start with, I am sure they would.  You still have to RP towards it.  Moonlight, is struggling just to get to Neutral.  It was a gradual in-game change, before being allowed to RP it ... eventually the change will happen.  But I don't see it as meta-gaming, as I haven't used any OOC knowledge IC.  Even all the information Moonlight knows about Corath, was obtained in-game from talking to and meeting with people.  Someone even provided her a book.  Even the meetings with Corathites, and she's only met 2 have been done RP.  So, it doesn't have to be meta-gamed.

Stuff I post here as Freldo I assume to be part of the game world - all my posts to the Wild Surge (even the one complaining that dwarves don't know how to write, I said it aloud for anyone to hear), the Market Hall's notices and even in my journal (I just assume I can't really keep inane stuff to myself for very long).

I think it's great to have some character I've never met come up to me and say something that was posted on the forums - it gives Freldo a chance to meet a new friend.

The trade hall, wild surge, etc are all assumed to be IC notice boards.  And using this info is of course quite acceptable.

This is not really about that one cleric, that was just one particular incident that stuck out as it was so recent.  It is about meta-gaming in general.  Especially on info that affects relationships and is secret!

If none of your fellow players new OOCly of your PCs direction, would any existing Corathites even know you existed?  How would you know that they did?  Perhaps the encounter felt OOC or perhaps this player was wanting to do you a favor by providing some RP hooks.  I was not there, of course, so do not know the details.

My own play style is what I term "shallow RP."  By that I mean that most of my emotes/dialogues contain little indication of personality or dreams.  Instead they tend to describe physical attributes or the setting.  An example would be: *shakes ogre gore off of flail with a flick* instead of *sighs at the uselessness of battle as he wipes his last opponent from weapon*.  That being said, though, I truly enjoy listening to and facilitating "deep RP."  When I travel with Isilme I attempt to comment on her brutality, or her desire to continue search out unnecessary battles.  It's not meant to be judgmental but rather as a hook for both Isilme to play off of, but also equally important for our fellow party members to pick up on.  ("Huh, did she just go down that deadend cooridor and slay that stack of ogres for the xp or because of something else?")

PWs are about stories; our own and others.  I truly value being able to read about everyone else's and think it adds great depth to the world.  I guess I'm saying, "Long live meta-gaming!"

FYI... typically_annoying and my own PC have travelled together a good deal and so I feel I may comment here without fear of offending the player.  I also reserve the right for Pig to call her "pretties Isilme" until Pig figures out who this Moonlight person is. :-)

I love the RP with PIG .. and yeah! he is the only one who won't get his head chopped for calling her Isilme!  PIG's style is simple and effective.  Let's face it . you know OOC about Moonlight, but PIG does not and you play him that way and I value that.

How would you know who the other are?  By word of mouth and rumours!  I know all the Corathites in game, by their bios/devs but I do not contact them as Moonlight doesn't know about them.  She found out about, and contacted the high priestess because she heard another player talking about her.  Eamane found another Corathite, quite by chance .. something in her description prompted a meeting.  So there are ways and means!

Hehe .. Why does she run down the corridor after those last few ogres?  Pure bloodlust (after all, she only get 1xp per ogre) !  And peoples comments about her bloodlust and how she should have more respect for life, is one of the things that has pushed her to Corath.  She has changed completely due to in-game events.  So RP-ing does work!

It's great being able to read dev threads and see how everyone is evolving, the info just shouldn't be used that's all.

a rebuild doesn't mean start from L1 ... if approved they can roll your xp back to L7 and re-add the xp, so you can fix your mistakes.  it is well known you wanted WM, so if a genuine mistake it may (or may not) get approved.  you have nothing to lose by trying!
