Layonara Server / When Proper RP Infringes Upon Other Player's Enjoyment
« on: October 27, 2006, 02:22:36 pm »
I want to make a bit of a statement which I've had to address a few times recently that is no set rule, but something a community of peers and friends should take into account.  I'm not really making this from a GM position, more as a peer to peer thing, it's really nothing we can control.

Within the realm of roleplay there will be cases where differing in character attitudes and feelings will cause players to not enjoy themselves as much as they would like to.  Let's begin with the common denominator, we're all here for fun.  Some people's version of fun differs from other people's naturally.  With that said, no one likes a party crasher.  If everyone is enjoying some easy listening music at a party and you show up and put on some heavy metal, things aren't going to go over so well.  Now here is where you typically hear "Well that's me, that is the kind of person I am." or in the case of our world it would be "I am just roleplaying my character."

Great, roleplay your character, you could have the most annoying egocentric bother of a PC, but you can and must still consider other player's enjoyment.  Stop and think about the ramifications of your actions.  Are you going to cause people to log off?  Is that what you want?  Is that a victory to you?

This sort of issue is exponentiated in quests, where people who wouldn't usually be associated with others feel they have a right to belong in the quest because they signed up and showed up on time.  Then other players are forced to make a decision, put up with this person through the quest or simply leave.

Let's not forget the GM running these quests too, who suddenly has PC confrontation after confrontation to deal with when they've put a ton of time and effort into another story.  Yes, this is a living breathing world and complications are going to arise but once again, ask yourself, are the other player's enjoying this complication, getting a good laugh out of it, providing some good rp in between the two characters or are they sighing, rolling their eyes and debating quitting the quest because all you seem to want is the spotlight on yourself?

Also to make matter's worse, the GM usually has to begin dealing with your character's actions through in character means and suddenly the focus is completely on the person causing complications.  Well how is that fun for everyone else?  Now you have even more personal attention devoted to your character as it detracts for everyone else.  You know what most players are thinking... "Great, they just screwed up everything, and they get rewarded with their own story line/segue/cdq".  Is that fair?

I guess in summary all I am trying to say is be a little more considerate of your fellow players.  Without them, things will get empty.

The following houses have owners who have not been logged in for at least 4 months.  If you are currently residing in any of these homes, please reply in this thread and we'll work things out, these houses will be placed back on the market on November 1st if the owner does not log in or if a current tenant does not speak up.

General Discussion / A Reminder About Level Progression
« on: August 17, 2006, 08:52:33 am »
If your character has been approved for a multi class, it is not acceptable to build levels such as this for example:

1 Fighter
15 Cleric
4 Fighter

These sort of builds are designed specifically to gain access to feats and are not in the spirit of our desire to dissuade powerbuilds.  Yes we're all aware you can make stories to fit any level progression but these sort of builds are designed for the sole purpose of gaining build/feat/skill advantages.  An approved fighter/cleric should progress somewhat like this:

1 Fighter
4 Cleric
1 Fighter
4 Cleric
1 Fighter
4 Cleric
1 Fighter
3 Cleric
1 Fighter

Please, please, please try to remember our world is about roleplay, and keeping an even field for everyone.  It is not fair to players who progress in levels in the spirit of the rules set in place when others are not.

Thank you.

General Discussion / Recent Maturity Levels
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:17:13 am »
I have been hoping this was a phase recently, but it does not seem to be going away so I would like to address this issue.  Throughout the forum, photo albums, IRC and in game I'm noticing the maturity levels dropping drastically.  General comments seem to not be helping so I thought I'd get into some specifics on things to avoid in public discussion.

  • The phrase "... is gay." is not acceptable.
  • "wtf", "pos", "lmfao" is not appropriate
  • Discussion of genitalia (animated, 3d, real etc) is not appropriate
  • "My ass" is not appropriate
  • Blatant sexual innuendo is not appropriate (i.e. That's quite the staff you have there Sir, do you like sticking it in things)
  • OOC Cultural, Religious, Racial, Country, Sexist insults are never appropriate
  • Insulting a PC's character OOC without them around is not appropriate
  • Discussion of the wild night you had with your significant other is not appropriate
  • Discussion of your illegal drug usage is not appropriate

These are just some that come off the top of my head.  Lets try to keep things a little more clean so everyone feels comfortable in the environment we enjoy gaming.  I am not sure how the inability to do some of the things I find inappropriate can detract from your Layonara experience, so let's all try to remember the vast difference in community members and respect the rules that have helped it grow and stay cohesive.

Development Journals and Discussion / The Denouement of a Birdlord
« on: June 29, 2006, 12:24:33 pm »
Plenarius soars high above Dregar, his eyes peeled to the grounds as he seeks out a recently lost friend.  His heart is as heavy as the dusty clouds pouring down rains and blocking the sun.  His thoughts push to the loss of Pranzis, the defense of the Great Oak and the destruction of Blood and his well.  He stops for a breather on a peak in the Blackfeather Mountains and preens some dust from his wings as he looks southwest.

The skies are emptier then they once were.  Nature beginning to feel the pressure of the loss of the life in the Sun and the constant darkness and rains.  Plen looks around for any life and sighs as the solitude of the peak echoes in his heart.  He summons his bear to his side just to have someone listen to him and welcomes Tim with a reluctant smile.

Yeah I know Tim, not a very hospitable place to call upon you, but you've seen worse.

The bear grunts a little and settles on its side, looking at Plen with a compassionate glance.  Plen sighs slightly and picks up a pebble that he launches off the peak deep into the depths of the canyons.

Can I do anything more for Her Tim?  What can I do through this dark time?  A new cycle has begun, new lifes, beautiful and awful will be borne under this devastation, but where do I fit in.

He takes a sip from his canteen and swishes the water around in his mouth before gulping it down with an exagerrated sound.

Dragoncalled, how we grew.  Almost fifty years and my body should be long expired, but it has not.  In fact, I feel almost younger then when I started.  I do not look my age Tim, what is that all about? How much life is left in me thus?  Should I even pursue my heart or does my sun set as well such that it will only serve to hurt more.

As night time descends, the little bit of warmth that had pierced through the blackness of the skies fades and Plen stands up and strikes his flint against the steel, lighting some tinder he gathered earlier in a small circle of rocks.  He scratches Tim between the eyes and smiles a bit as he watches the flames cast dancing shadows against the rock face.

I should set out again Tim, I have to make sure she's okay.  I do miss her... but...

Plen doesn't finish his words out loud and he sends Tim back to his plane with a quiet wave.

The age of darkness has descended, the Birdlord has a few final things to do. Katia, guide me in these final steps, Nature my defense.  Be with me, your own.  Balance always always returns.  It is not only the time for this world to find it, but myself as well... Glory be your name Mother Nature.  Your child, your Birdlord takes flight.  Hope and trust in balance.

Plenarius then looks up into the black sky, he inhales deeply and spins around, pushing off with a leap and flapping his wings furiously as he climbs high into the night.

Layonara Server / Attention Players With Skull Portraits
« on: June 01, 2006, 02:20:57 am »
You can change your portrait back to it's default by typing:    For example if your portraits were:  Plen_H Plen_L Plen_M Plen_S Plen_T  you would type:    If your portraits were say:  ValenH ValenL ValenM ValenS ValenT  you would type:    This only works once, if you mess up, a GM will have to fix it for you, so try to get it right.  GMs can Fix portraits of characters (or NPCs/PCs for quests) by typing:    For example    (note the full character name need not be typed in as long as it's distinct)

The clear moonlight of the unclouded night casts shadows across nearby trees, the limbs and branches seeming to frolic in a frenetic rhythm.

Whispers carry across the winds as though the very blusters spoke phrases.

Some of you may have noticed a few tilesets have caused some odd looking areas such as The Citadel in Lar, Firesteep Mountain Mine, Mosscrypt, the Great Dungeon and others.  I've patched the extra hak to correct this issue and return those areas to how they should be looking.

Please download this patched hak and overwrite the existing one in your hak directory if you visit these areas or are planning on it.

Rumour Has It / A Vision - A New Sun Archer Rises
« on: May 09, 2006, 09:37:33 pm »
The world seems to have shrunk and fallen silent.  You close your eyes and capture a vivid vision...Your mind sees eastward over the sparkling oceans into wide uncharted lands, nameless plains and forests unexplored. Towers of unknown kings delved by people long since lost and there, amidst your vision you see a port, it's towers flying colourful banners. Woodland surrounds the port upon which you look, the last haven of the ancient elves of Layonara; Voltrex.

You see a grove and the eyes of an Aeridinite priest alight upon a ring as he exclaims loudly with elation and he hands it to a young female elf. "The Solar Star Ring!" he speaks with jubilation.

The dim light from above falls into the crytalline heart of the jeweled ring, wherein it appears magnified and refracted to fall as a shower of rainbow hues over the lush grove. You then see him grasp a mithril stave with both hands and he strikes it upon a stone slab in the middle.  From the lustre of the staff bursts a fierce ray, a shower of phopsphorescent dust which illuminates the grove.

"The Mithril Staff" pronounces the priest, through the fading haze of magic.

The bells of an ancient temple ring out the call to the ritual across the slumbering lands of the Elven continent.  Suddenly your vision moves to four towers, elements, their symbols - Earth then Water then Fire then Air.... Then suddenly
Dawn breaks...

The rays of the Sun shower into the crystals high atop the elemental towers and redirect the solar energy to another tower, that of Nature, then transposing the rays to the grove you gazed upon.

The words of a chant echo through the canopied grove, drifting through the dusty air where they seem to gather like a translucent mist.  As the priest's chant builds in intensity the glowing aura of the collected elemental rays begin blazing light, filling your visage.

The collected ray redirects into the outstretched staff as the priest channels the energy upon a single stone slab. A young elf woman now wearing the ring focuses her ceremonial gift onto the stone where lies a single simple arrow. The arrow flows a deep yellow and pulsates in divine and arcane magical energy.

The Sun Archer grasps the arrow tightly... and pulls his bow back.  He slings the arrow loose and it pierces across the sky, over the rolling hills and valleys and climbing the mighty peaks of Voltrex to the tallest mount.  It shatters into a glacier of ice, melted within the rocky earth top as a brisk wind clows and carries a spark of magical warmth throughout... The cycle begins once more.

Voltrex is safe another century.  The Sun Archer awakes.

Your vision ends.

//Congratulations Talan!

Layonara Server / Cross Server Autoportal Changes
« on: May 08, 2006, 02:36:25 pm »
Some of you may have noticed that changing servers happens two ways, any time you were incoming to West the system would boot you, and you would have to log in to West manually.  As a convenience, since there was less traffic into the other servers we allowed for the autoportal function incoming to Central, East or the Planes.

However, this has been a cause for crashes for as long as we've had more then one server.  We've decided to forego convenience for stability, so now any time you portal/ship to another server, the system will boot you and you will need to log in to the destination server.

This will be in place the next time the servers are reset.

As an added note, when you portal and the system boots you, it's advised to close nwn and start it back up.  This usually helps with the haks not loading correctly and seeing white textures.

Layonara Server / Item Recall: PLEASE READ
« on: May 05, 2006, 04:59:25 pm »
When we initially implemented the new loot drops, there were many items that needed to be evaluated and balanced. In the sheer amount of work we had to put in them, some items slipped through our eyes and we now need to correct this in order to maintain the balance of the world.

As such the following items need to be removed or replaced once evaluating if they were the old or new ones. Understand that if any money exchange occurred to gain them, it will be returned.

Please volunteer the possession of any of these items in this thread to make our lives easier or the GMs will keep an eye out for the imbalanced versions of these items.

Lesser Stag Cloak
Stag Cloak
Magnetic Repulsion Belt N-53
Welteel's Wrap
