I very nearly closed the servers down this morning, and I mean it was close. The only reason I didnt is because the teams are working so hard on projects that I just couldnt bring myself to harm them or destroy all of their hard work. NwN is old, it is ancient, there is little to no reason to keep the server going except to allow a rare few people to enjoy their time in a world that they like (the few left in the community that still play and still truly like the world). It is only a matter of time before they are closed down, but today just wasnt that day. These servers do nothing but cause me (and a fair few of the individuals on the teams) grief, hardships, frustrations, time away from family and friends, or a whole lot of money. They used to bring a ton of fun and enjoyment but that is no longer the case (for me at least). I now dread waking up and checking the forums because I know the mentality of a few in the community; those that like to rant and rave about how they are so wronged but that they could never do anything wrong. Oh but then when something goes wrong it is our fault (or perhaps more specifically my fault) for some silly or stupid reason; never the fault of their own. Have you wondered why not a whole lot of quests have been run in the plot or why I am not around as much? That is the main reason, at least 70% of the reason. Many on the GM Team cant bring our self to log in for spot quests or impromptu quests very often (myself included) because of all the childish and immature behaviors and attitudes. A few bad apples in the community have nearly burnt every one of us out. Sad isnt it?

Five years ago I started this server off being very wide open to the public with little to no rules other than basic ones. Today look at the line of rules and the restrictions we have had to place on creativity and fun. It shows the state of online gaming and a lack of responsibility and respect in online and offline communities in general. I think it is a very sad thing indeed. It also goes to show why companies out there are moving away from having forums at all for their games, because a few of the very players that claim to love the world that they play in also seem to love to destroy that place. The emotional drama is childish and immature and does not do any community any good, and most certainly not ours.

For various reasons we are going to be changing the way development threads are displayed to the public. We only have two options and I prefer the first but if we are not able to do it we will go with the second option. One of these options will happen over the next few weeks, as we get some time to work on it.
1) We are looking to make it so that a private development thread can be read by a forum member who is a friend (marked as a friend on the forums) of the original poster (thread owner) of a thread.
2) If we are not able to do #1 we will make all development threads private and only the poster and GM Team will be able to read them.

I think it is very sad that we have come to this point but there is no other option. I refuse to continue to waste time, effort, and money watching the community blowup in rants and raves over meta-gaming or outright and blatant (IC) blaming of others in these threads. I put IC in () because a few players try to pull it off as an IC sort of thing when it is clearly not, but they feel we in the community are too stupid to see through that underhanded style of (play). Some players feel that they can point fingers at other players by posting under the pretense of (in character) in their CDTs because they know that certain individuals that meta-game read their threads. And they do it in a low and underhanded way; they are looking to give little jabs here and there and I find that unacceptable, demeaning to themselves as a human being, and just downright low. But I am also done fighting this sort of nonsense. It just drains everybodys will to play in the world, run quests in the world, keep the world servers running at all, or even be anywhere near the community as a whole. To fix the core problem of this sort of (play) that individual must understand that they need to change and then make that effort; there is nothing we can do to help them along.

What is so funny is that some of the worst meta-gamers refuse to even see that they meta-game. It is a mind game that they play with themselves, let alone with all of those around themselves. Some of them know they do it but refuse to try and better themselves. To top it all off some of those same individuals rant and rave when things are meta-gamed back on to them. Its a vicious little cycle of self-denial or not wanting to improve oneself and I am not going to play that childish game any longer.

Character Submissions / Evil Character Bio Descriptions
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:22:39 am »
I am surprised I am having to type this but after five years of doing this I suppose I shouldn't be suprised.

I want everybody to keep in mind the server and the community when they are submitting an evil aligned character. This is a family server and as such young adults and in some cases children may be reading these submissions. There is no reason to get graphic or gruesome on the submissions, none at all. There are multiple ways to get around the "need" of writing graphic details in a character submission, just use your head and a little common sense and you will figure out a way.

I do not want to see the graphic descirptions in submissions any more, they are unacceptable. If we continue to see them evil aligned character will once again be removed from the world.

 Thank you.

Layonara Server / Furniture Deed Preview Application - UPDATED
« on: April 10, 2007, 10:17:28 pm »
Lord of the Forest and Minerva have updated the application and the images for the in-game furniture deeds. You can get the file under downloads and optional files. Thank you to the both of you for this service to the community.

This tool is intended to make to make it easier for house-owners to see what the furniture they may purchase at a merchant. It gives a visual image of each of the furinture pieces that a deed represents.

You simply scroll down the list and look what piece of furniture sounds interesting. You click it and you get an image of it.

Thank you to Lord of the Forest and Minvera!

This is a .exe file but it has been checked for viriis and is clear. (Leanthar)

[SIZE=13] I am going to try and set the "standard" for the two starting locations so that we are all on the same page when it comes to RP'ing the cities and the citizens and tolerance levels in each of the cities.

 Port Hempstead:
This town leans towards "good" and by that I mean the commoners, peasants, merchants, and nobles in this city accept what would be considered "normal" in day-to-day life. They would not knowingly accept (or tolerate) creatures (or shape shifted creatures) in their town such as large cats, bear, trolls, and all of those. They would chase these things out of town or quite possibly kill them and/or imprison the humanoid ones. The guards are firm in their conviction carrying out the law set down by the nobles and carried out by the law of keeping the day-to-day life of living "normal". They do not tolerate evil in the city and if one is known to be evil they will be arrested and/or chased out of the city. If one is caught doing an unlawful or evil act they will be sent to prison and will stand trial and face the consequences of their action(s). Keep in mind that there are some evil aligned (by race for instance) heroes that are indeed now known to be good and are treated as such and even treated as heroes in some cases.

//Do not shape shift in this town unless you wish to pay the penalty, and that penality can and will change over time and due to circumstances. Do not bring in your wildlife pets in to this town. Do not come in to this town if you are evil or have performed evil acts that is documented and/or known, you will pay the price eventually.

 Fort Vehl:
This town leans towards "evil" and by that I mean that the rules are relaxed when it comes to creatures in town, evil humanoids, shape shifting in to animals or even trolls and such. But they do have a limit, they will not tolerate abuse to citizens or defiling (in any way) the city or the nobles or law in charge and in some cases the merchants. Peasants do not rank high on their list but commoners have a slightly better standing. They allow a little more flexiability (within reason) of the evil races and in some cases evil acts within the city walls. The punishment put down by the law and nobles in this town is quite often brutal and in many cases the consequences are death or public spectacle plus a long prison term.

//Evil characters, those that like to drag their pets in to towns, and shapeshifting sorts can travel this town but even the guards and nobles in this town have their patience and their tolerance levels so keep that in mind. If you want to perform your "evil" or shapeshift theatrics this is the town to do it in, but be prepared to face the consequence if it gets out of hand. I.E. use common sense and always remember that the nobility have a city (a large city) to run and they will only allow so much. Please don't whine if you go over the line and the guards come after you. And be aware that the penalties in this town are quite often brutal. In some cases the "good" may be chased out of this town though that is not overly likely, but I can see it happening from time to time so keep that in mind.

 Final Comment:
These are the two starting cities folks. Make sure you are in the proper city when RP'ing. Do not get carried away, there is always a line that should not be crossed, that line is different for each town. The cities are large and the nobility will keep things under control, or at least under control in the way that they feel it should be. If you get crazy or do silly things be prepared to pay the consequences of your actions. Keep in mind that there are 10's of thousands of peasants, commoners, merchants, and nobles in each of the cities and you can not see them due to engine limitations, but they are there and the nobles and the law will protect them against anything and anybody (including "heroes").

Layonara Server / Nibor21 Promotion
« on: March 28, 2007, 10:54:21 am »
Hello Everybody,

I would like to annouce that Nibor21 is taking over on the Project Team side of things. That also means that he is now a GM, though he will not be running quests for us.

He is now leading the Project Team. During this time of transition he, Pankoki, and Dorganath will be working very closely together to make sure that things with V3 are resolved and the module transfer/creation is handled smoothly. He is already working on a new version and has been working with them very closely for some time. Please give Nibor the support he needs as he moves foward in his new duties.

Nibor has quite a lot of experience with scripting, module merging, the various tools we use for handling the modules, and he also has PW experience. This is a good fit for us and I think it will be a long and healthy working relationship for all of us and I think it will help the community in a large way. Pankoki and Dorganath will both still be around to answer questions when they come up.

Welcome to your new duties Nibor!

Here it is, so that it is not cut off. Hope this helps if you had questions.

//All of this OOC but I am going to explain a few things for this quest and future plot quests as well as why we are doing a few things at this time.

//Sorry for the spam to follow, I have a lot to say on this first full blown official campaign/start. *chuckles* when don't I!!? *smiles*

//First, a personal request to help Layonara. Please use the stores and the classifieds system at layonara.com folks, it will help to keep the world moving foward or indeed online. Please donate as well. Spread the word! Thank you. Second, thank you to Pankoki, Dorganath, Orth, and the entire Project Team for bringing us the first step of V3. Looking good everybody, thank you.

//Third, thank you to Orth for continuing to work on and imrpove the new layonara.com site, it looks great. Fourth, a personal request to help Layonara. Please use the stores and the classifieds system at layonara.com folks, it will help to keep the world moving foward or indeed online. Please donate as well. Spread the word! Oh did I say that already? *smiles playfully*

//Fifth, please spread the word about Layonara folks, we need to grow the community. So talk to your friends and their friends and friends friends, family, your co-workers, their co-workers, post on forums and post in newsgroups, talk to guilds. All of them. Spread the word.

Okay...on the plot/quest series stuff...1) Communicate with everybody and all players outside of the quest. Ask any of the old time players. Communication is the key to success. You will need to know information as the plot unfolds. Communicate and keep the community involved. 2) Be smart, think things through, and apply past knowledge to everything within the plot quest.

//3) There will be many times where I will do something you do not agree with or you think is wrong and your character should have been able to do xyz. Sometimes I miss things due to the size of the parties involved *looks around at everybody*. Sometimes I feel that is the result that should have happened at that point in time with everything going on.

//4) There will be times, and for long periods of time it could happen, that I will limit the party sizes and I will also limit the character levels. I don't do this to "keep" people out of the quests, everybody deserves to have fun on the plot. I do this to try and keep battles consistent and "difficult" for the part of the plot we are in. I also do it because I don't like to kill characters in unfair battles. Level requirements are needed in those cases.

//So please don't start ranting about how unfair level restrictions are the plot quests, there has to be restrictions in many cases. 5) There will be times that the plot will end in very "odd" locations, areas, or situations, so don't freak out when that happens. *smiles*

//6) There will be times that the party "loses" a session. That does not mean a loss of the plot (at that time at least) but it does mean that things will unfold a little differently due to that "loss". As a notification, fully 20% of the sessions were "lost" in the last plot session that last four years, but in the end Blood was still defeated. So losses can happen, and will happen, it is part of life in Layonara.

//7) I am well aware of the times I run the quests for the plot, but I do the best that I can with the time I have available after working, helping the teams with Layonara, and spending time with the family. It is the best I can do with my time at hand. I am looking in to a Saturday sort of session time frame but I don't know if it is going to happen or not. 8) Stay in character at all times. No OOC nonsense on these quests please. People gather together on these quests to stay IC and to have fun, let's make sure that happens.

//9) No arguing with the GM, simple as that. I may make an incorrect decision for whatever reason or action but I usually know when that happens and if I feel it is warranted I will make up for it. No arguing with the GM(s) running a plot quest. That is how it should always be as well folks, for any quest run by a GM.

//10) There will be many times that I ask the players to choose a quest leader, that is up to you guys who the leader is...but when that happens don't go back later on and start crying about the choice due to the leaders actions or decisions. That gets old fast. On the same note, there will be times that I specifically state who is lead the party that quest session and I due this to past involvement at various sessions in the plot. It is not a sense of "favortism", that label gets old fast too folks.

//I do not play favorites, I try to stay consistent, and that goes with choosing party leaders or decisions. So when you get in to that sort of mindset it is time to step back and rethink things as you are taking the fun out of the game by your own thoughts and actions, for yourself and those around you. 11) Why did I state all of this you ask? Because I have heard it all before in the last campaign/plot and I don't want it coming back and ruining the fun for me (or other players involved) again this this campaign.

//12) There will be times that I give out xp and will not give out xp at the end of a quest session. There will also be times I give out items and many times I do not give out items. It is how I do things as the plot unfolds. 13) I reward RP and staying involved and working within the abilities of the party and characters around at the time. So lets stay in character and be involved. Don't whine about "xyz player" being more involved or less involved, it is how things happen on quests. It is not a favortism thing.

//I almost didn't run a campaign/plot quest because of the childish and immature actions by others in the past campaign/plot quest, they take the fun out of everything and in the end it just is not worth it. I hope this long running campaign/plot is different. Things happen in the campaign, lets be mature and deal with them in the proper fashion and without ruining the fun for the GM's that will be running the various sessions and most certainly for the players involved.

I then went in to specifics about that quest and what was coming up.

General Discussion / Tales of Layonara - Comic Strip - Issue #2
« on: March 17, 2007, 10:00:53 am »
Issue #2 is now out! A very big thank you to Niels and Andrew.

Go to "New Players" and then "Downloads". You will see the category and then go take a look at issue #2. If you haven't downloaded the first one please do so. Enjoy both issues at the same time!

On an off note. This may be the last issue of the Tales of Layonara comic. Andrew seems to have had some significant RL issues pop up and has fallen out of communication with both Niels and myself for about three months now. It is so unfortunate because these two have worked really well together and they have so much talent.

Niels and I are discussing other options but that is all they are right now, just options and ideas.

General Discussion / Thank you Orth (James)
« on: March 15, 2007, 10:27:23 am »
This guy is amazing! I have had the pleasure of managing and working with some very talented and dedicated people in my life but James is at the top of that list.

In the years of working with him I can not recall a single instance where he has not finished a request or job in a timely manner and with a high quality of professionalism and shine. This is a fairly rare quality to find in people, and for him to do it so consistently is exceptional.

I worry about him tackling so much from time to time but every time I turn around he is finishing one task or another for the team, friends, the community, or just something out of the kindness of his heart. The amount of work and production from him is amazing, and it happens time after time across many projects and areas of responsibility.

You have some extremely good qualities and are just a down right good person, quite the combination for an individual.

You are a rare find James; thank goodness you are on our team and with this community!

Thank you, and however you do it, keep it up.

General Discussion / Classifieds - Check them out
« on: March 14, 2007, 05:01:49 am »
I would like to encourage each of you to check out the classifieds on the new site. It is a neat little extra service that the community can use to buy, sale, and trade. One person is already starting to use it which is nice to see.

So check it out and use the service and make good use of it.

Introduce Yourself / Hello from Leanthar
« on: March 11, 2007, 10:20:40 am »
Hello Everybody!

Who am I? Hmm....just a normal every day guy that had a fantastic group of Pen and Paper players that were enjoying a tiny place called Layonara. Then I brought it online....what a difference and what growth!

I am a father of four wonderful children (18 (Heather), 17 (Skyler), 15 (Sierra), and 4 (Raylynn)) who are so very talented and smart in thier own ways. *smiles* Yes, those are the words of a proud father.

I also have the best wife in the world. Beverly is just fantastic! She supports me in all I do, she encourages me and she helps out when and where she can. Brilliant, talented, and beautiful, she is a great lady!

I like in Oakhurst California, just 10 miles south of Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Mountains. Essentially right smack in the middle of the state if you are ever looking for it on a map.

I can't say enough about the teams that support Layonara. We have all been blessed to have found so much talent, quality, genuine friends, and intelligence here at Layonara. Without them (all of the teams) we would not be what we are now and where we are going.

Layonara is the third world that I created as a Game Master for my Pen and Paper players. It actually combines parts of all of the other worlds and all that I learned as I was creating things from before. I enjoy the creation process if one didn't realize that by those statements. *smiles*

Remember: If it feels off or wrong it probably is and you should think before doing it. Help us to help the community, do what is right in all you do.

Enjoy the community and the world!

Server Rules / Rules on Sex, Sex innuendo's etc.
« on: March 18, 2006, 08:17:20 pm »
Well, sadly it is that time. I need to make the rule that under no circumstance is sex allowed between characters. It just can’t happen any longer. Some players just do not seem to get it and they just keep pushing the boundary too far. We fix one problem and we have three more come up that need to be resolved. Enough-is-enough. Sex between characters is no longer allowed, not in private locations—including houses, not in tells, not in whispers, in no way is it allowed any longer.

Nor are ‘mark’s allowed to be used as symbols to this sort of thing. Silly stuff like that just distracts from the world and are not allowed. If you really want to have in-character sex then find another world—it is not needed nor is it desired on this server.

The group(s) that are doing this at this time (and we know who you are) can now break up and quit RP'ing this side of things.

Character Submissions / Do Not PM GMs About Character Submissions
« on: October 23, 2005, 09:33:00 am »
Alright everybody.  This is getting out of hand. I want to remind you that we do this for free and when we have time to get in to the forums and game to work on things we do.  We do this as often as we can and we try to be as timely as possible.  Sometimes RL and other things do not allow us to be here 24/7 (no really, it doesn't) even though a few of us would like that and it seems like a few players demand it.  So have some patience please, we need to have a life as well.  Please do NOT PM GM's asking for character approvals and such--this has gotten out of hand.  No more PM'ing GM's asking us to come and approve characters.
  Thank you for your understanding.

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Basic Beginners Guide to Crafting

***Initially posted by Twidget658***
How to make an arrow: CRFTNG/104   Collect feathers from various areas around Hlint. Raven and falcon are close. To the west, north and east of Hlint is where you can find them. (Must have skinning knife.)   Smelting  -Collect copper or other metal (Goblin’s cave and will need a heavy pick)  -Put nugget into public furnace at the smith’s  You now have an ingot.   Tinkering  -Collect clay (Lake Alon and need a shovel)  -Put in Tinkering Furnace to make a small mold (need tinkering tools)  -Put small mold and an ingot of copper or other metal into tinkering machine.  You may now have arrowheads.   Wood crafting  -Collect hickory or other wood (Hlint North Outskirts and need a woodcutting axe)  -Put into the carpenter’s bench (need carpenter’s tools)  -Make the shaft for missile weapons  You now have arrow shafts.   Wood crafting  -Put feather, wooden missile shafts, and arrowhead on Fletcher’s bench.  You now have arrows.   Easy! Oh, by the way, anywhere in this process you can fail and lose everything. It is not a perfect world.
