General Discussion / Dear NWN« on: June 20, 2010, 11:19:09 am »
Dear Neverwinter Nights,
I never actually finished your official campaign (any of them), and most of even my favorite modules were left off around 95% completion. No more than a handful of areas from the module project I started were ever done, even though building was the only reason I went PW surfing to begin with. I am a poor modeler and have not given you any shiny new toys like other people have over the years, as with my most valiant efforts I am generally just translating the work of others to work for us. I rarely finish stories, and my scripting in any language is akin to the tourist that greets natives with "the cat is black" and says his farewells as "the cheese is stinky". I only dabbled with your sequel, and even when I poked my head into another PW I didn't speak with another soul. I bought that nice premium module that I heard was very good, but like other very good modules I only got halfway through it, along with that expansion. Expansions. I've found that the things I love most about your sequel are the models that got ripped from it and given to you. Enjoy! I did not get you a card, because I hate cards, and also I don't care for wrapping paper, bows, and in general anyone bothering me, and also I am officially 2 days late. But I thought I would say it anyway. Happy 8th Birthday, NWN! Eight years later you are getting some of the best content since your release. Here are just a few examples of the continued labors of love on your behalf, to cheer you and make up for my own lack of contribution. I did not even count the last patch they labored on for you, and the premium modules that were cancelled but given to the community, or any of the older content that is still in the top ranks! NWShader (Ignore them when they say adding bloom to NWN is like putting lipstick on a pig - they should have said gilding a lily. The possibilities cannot be measured!) NWNCQ NWN Enhanced sixesthrice's pretty tilesets CTP Babylon CEP 2.3 (the new DM tools are crazy!) Senemenelas' Underdark Tileset KotoR Heads SciFi Placeables Worms Fantasy Interiors Sen's Seasonal Workshop (remember when we were trying to make the seasons change dynamically with worms, NWN? That was silly. This is easy.) Community Music Pack Lastly, while I do not have anything of my own that is anything of note, and have not in general added to your lifespan with so much as a font, you must understand that with your kind I am a fickle creature. Drawn to shiny and ever dissatisfied with its empty reflection, I move on and on and on from "games," leaving a trail of open manuals and dusty boxes behind me, bouncing from latest and greatest back to Betrayal at Krondor, Mario, and King's Quest, and, more recently, Lemmings. Forget all the others. You are the only one I have been (semi-)faithful to, and with you are the only characters (singular) I've made that have lasted any significant length of time, even when we are called silly for still caring about a game nearing a decade-old and wanting to do good things for it. Did I say a decade? No, no, you are closer to 5 than 10. Forget all that. So thank you for the toolset, and thank you for Acacea, and happy birthday! The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

Layonara Server / Congratulations Gilshem Ironstone« on: May 02, 2010, 02:50:08 pm »
I would like to let you all know that Gilshem Ironstone will be joining the Character Approvals Team. Prior to his leave taking from the world he had an interest in joining the team but real life prevented him from doing this in the end. However, he has returned to Layonara and we are pleased to offer him this position.
He will soon be graciously donating some of his spare time to working on your applications and guiding them through the approval process. Please join me in thanking him for agreeing to donate this time and effort to making our world a better (and smoother running) place. ~row The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

Ask A Gamemaster / Dark Elves and the Law« on: April 22, 2010, 10:39:32 am »
I have a question regarding Dark Elves and Divine Law. Last night a pc dark elf openly acknowledged his race and even agreed to travel with another party member to Vehl to be registered as a dark elf at the Temple. It was presented to me that by because of the history of dark elves, the simple open presence of one on Mistone is a violation of the law. I'm aware that some cities like Hempstead ban Dark Elves openly, but what of the surrounding countryside? Is it legal to arrest and incarcerate a dark elf that is following the law simply because he or she is a dark elf? I spent some time in Lore and haven't found a single thing to back this statement up. Quite the contrary in fact. As stated in the Law of Layonara -
Principles of the Divine Court

LORE Bugs / Correct Spelling?« on: April 17, 2010, 03:40:07 pm »
Within the Rofirein sections (on LORE and elsewhere), are various spellings of a particular rank/position. On some pages, like the Hierarchy, the word is spelled "Justiciar." On others, like the Sects page, it is spelled "Justicar." And then "Justicer" is around here and there on the forums.
I'm also not sure how any but the last should be pronounced. "Justiciar" looks like just-iss-ee-ar or just-iss-ee-ur, which my mouth thinks is one too many syllables, heh. "Justicar" looks like just-i-kar, which my brain thinks is silly, though I could see just-i-sar but would be left asking why not just spell it "Justicer" in that case. Anyway, can the definitive spelling be determined and corrected on LORE, and can we know the proper pronunciation, please? The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / Clarity of Rofireinite Ranks - ATTN: EdTheKet« on: April 13, 2010, 06:30:48 pm »
The hierarchy in the Rofirein section of LORE is confusing and unclear. As a hierarchy, the vertical position of each rank is descriptive of that rank's "power" and position in the chain of command. If that is considered while examining the hierarchy, one finds that Protectors (the "standard" position of a priest of Rofirein) are on par with Unit Captains (an elevated rank within the Knights of the Wyrm, with plain ol' Knight being the "standard" rank). That's weird.
Here's the argument I made a little while back: Quote from: Me Somewhere Else My understanding of the branches of the Church is that they are similar to the branches in a nation's military. Under normal circumstances, an US Army captain and a US Navy captain most likely aren't going to be dealing with each other. But sometimes they could find themselves together, in which case the Navy captain outranks the Army captain because a Navy captain is equivalent to an Army colonel. An all-in-one chart for THE Church of Order should reflect that orderly concept and display each rank in its appropriate vertical position relative to the other ranks within the Church. In other words, some space should be added or removed here and there so each branch of the Church can be compared to the others. That will allow each player of a Rofireinite character to know where his character belongs, and help DMs know how to interact when using certain NPCs. If there's any need for help determining which rank is where, I'd be glad to offer ideas. The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

LORE Bugs / Prantz Army Officer's Corps - Attn: EdTheKet« on: April 12, 2010, 07:41:41 pm »
The Prantz Army Officer's Corps, should be re-written to reflect the changes introduced by Rael. I suggest changing the content of the existing page to past tense and then linking to the newer information.
Rael Kingdom Military Quote The Prantz Officer Army Corp, once dedicated to the Waylend line, has been renamed the Rael Officer Army Corp and is now a proving ground for any soldier in Lord Rael’s army who wishes to move beyond the enlisted ranks. The training for those who would lead Lord Rael’s forces is said to be horrific and sometimes deadly; certainly, no being that ever completed it alive can be considered the same as before. Absolute unwavering loyalty to Lord Rael (until death) is the prime attribute of the successful Rael Officer Army Corp enlistee. As an interesting side note Jin Lun Lee was/is a member of the old Pranzis Army Officer's Corps. To him the Rael Officer Army Corp isn't the same organisation. I imagine there will be a few ex-officers hiding in the forest of fog and telling war stories to their grand children about the good old days. The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

Fixed Bugs / Useless Claws« on: April 08, 2010, 02:12:01 pm »
On the Weapons page for Grimals, it says:
Quote Their sharpened claws are kept dangerous through constant sharpening—anything short of a layer of metal can stop them. This means a gauzy layer of cloth - or even bare skin - can stop their claws, making them not at all dangerous. The word "anything" should be replaced with "nothing" to get the meaning I think was intended. The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

General Discussion / Stepping Down from GM'ing« on: February 27, 2010, 12:45:15 am »
Well folks, it has come that time for me to step down from being a GM. Thanks to L and the team for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of the team.
I have been on this server for over five years now and GM'ed for the last year or so of it between deployments. It was definitely interesting to see how the server operated behind the curtain. I appreciate all the fun that I had while serving the server. I enjoyed my time helping players, running impromptu quests (my favorite by far), and bringing the world alive by possessing NPCs (especially animals), changing spawns, and keeping players on their toes. There are truly fantastic RP'ers in our community and it is constant. There is almost always someone RPing in some form or fashion all of the time. There are different styles and different levels, thank you for the education from that side of the field. Thanks again, twidget The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

LORE Bugs / Spelling and Punctuation Errors« on: February 15, 2010, 12:28:25 am »
Inevitably, with the sheer volume of text we have in LORE, we're going to misspell something. So, when you nice people catch an incorrectly spelled word or a missing period at the end of a sentence, or maybe we just forgot to put a space between two words, please post your findings here and we'll get it fixed up in a jiffy. That's right, I said "jiffy."

General Discussion / Group Looting, and Items at the end.« on: February 06, 2010, 02:36:03 pm »
I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about Looting and all that fun stuff that comes at the end when the loot is gone over by the group.
1. Definatly assign a looter in your group... and contrary to popular beleive it DOES NOT have to be the rogue or the scout's job every time. The group should assign whom they trust with that role (would your character really trust that shady person dressed in all black stabbing everything in the back with the role of keeping hold of the money and items you might find?) 2. If you are not the looter, dont look at dead corpses. If the looter sees you do that and move on.. they may assume that body has nothing on it and leave it go as well. We have a system in place that announced EVERYTHING that is looted. So you really have no reason to look. 3. Set some rules at the start... be they IC or OOC... do it at the begenning so there is no grumbles at the end. I would reccomend trying a Need Before Greed for loot drops. What that does is, if the item in question your character wants and will use personally. They have dibs over say someone who wants it because they know they can make money selling it, they know a friend who wants it etc.... This IMO is only fair to those who wish to use it and helped earn it. Versus those who wont use it directly. If no one Needs the item to use on the toon they are playing... the item then falls to Greed. Basically anyone who wants it, for whatever purpose can then roll for the item or take it at this point if no one else ask for it. If anyone else has sugestions they wish to add please do!! General Discussion / Exciting!« on: January 29, 2010, 12:52:27 pm »
It truly is exciting to see all the applications coming in for the positions of GM/LORE team. Why? Because it shows we still have folks that care about the community and want to see it grow and prosper. At least, I hope that's why you guys are applying :p. Seriously, though, I'm looking forward to mentoring and working with the "next generation."
And yeah, I still miss all you "old folks" who had to leave the team for one reason or another. We couldn't have done it without you. So here's to the new and old, and the ugly trolls like me! *raises a bowl of cereal-sweetened milk* Exciting! The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

Poetic License / That's Layo! (A song.)« on: January 05, 2010, 02:22:56 am »
*The crowd is chattering as the musicians - a group of archers on the strings (what with their skill with the bow), a group of fighters on percussion (because hitting things with other things is their schtick), a group of Toranites on brass (because they can occasionally be blowhards.. *innocently*), and a group of druids on woodwinds (because.. well.. wood. And wind, for that matter) - take their seats. A wizard wearing black robes made from malar hide, complete with the panther's slender tail, and a white tunic comes out with a slender wand in hand. Resplendant in his tux with tails, he taps the podium, and begins to play. The bardic vocalists begin to sing..*
When you wander across continents, To fetch apples for a pie; No self-preservation sense, Just respawning if you die; With your armour dinged with many dents, And a twinkle in your eye; And you then recall just why, my gents, ("And ladies!" interposes one halfling bardess.. the crowd laughs.) You first gave Layo a try! Whether tanning hides, Or slaying orcs, Or finding old Rusty pitchforks, Or reinventing Gnomish sporks, Or whatever else you do... As you gather treasure, Gems and gold, Or face those villains, Brave and bold, Or defeating some Slime, ooze, or mold, We put forward this as true... That's Layonara! Layonara! Layonara! Through and through! *A bow. Thundrous applause. Enterprising food crafters sell slices of apple pie to the crowd, and are mobbed with a veritable swarm of halflings. Much like pirrahna can skeletonize a cow in under a minute, the pie seems to vanish all but instantaneously, leaving the vendors bewhildered, and the poorer for the loss of pie. Alas. Now they have to walk halfway across the world if they want to make another...* The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

Rumour Has It / Night of the Undead« on: December 21, 2009, 05:10:57 pm »
The night of Tunar, Jenra 16, 1459 will be remember across Mistone for some time as a night of unrest and chaos across the lands. A dark night with thick clouds obscuring the night sky of any light that tried to penetrate its murk.
A night that crypt keepers and graveyard tenders will recall when the dead clawed their way from their graves in many places to attack any living they came across. Toranites and undead hunters were kept busy quelling the seeming uprising and forcing the undead back to rest across the lands. Dead bodies from the Tsunami's attacked fisherfolk and coastal villages seemingly at random. Imagine the horror when lost loved ones in the disaster returned to call on the living and try to kill them! Chaos, madness! Some say its the work of Corath, his foul breath upon the land causing the dead to rise in their corruption. Whatever it was, by morning it was over. With the dawns light bright and clear the unliving returned to their graves and to their rest. The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

Rumour Has It / Fire in the Forest of Fog« on: November 26, 2009, 11:46:22 am »
Fire destroys a section of the Forest of Fog
A major fire, thought to be of magical origin destroyed a huge area of the Forest of Fog before local druids and rangers were able to bring it under control. It was very close to a known temple to Folian S'pae. Luckily it is reported that none of the clergy were hurt though some of the children using the den did suffer from smoke damage to their breathing before escaping out a back entrance. Most of the occupants of the temple were not present, being at an pilgrimage to some unknown shrine deeper in the forest. The bodies of several Dark Elves dressed in Corathian gear were discovered at dead in close proximity to the blaze but unfortunately they were bound and thus could not be held for capture. Rumors abound that a mysterious artifact was found on one of the bodies before it disappeared. The body of a heavily tattooed human was also found ravaged by wolves and bears and remains unidentified. Healers were not able to help the individual and his remains were interred by clergy somewhere close to the fire. The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Back On The Ledge Over Haven After "How Far Does A Dragon Fall?"« on: November 17, 2009, 11:36:43 pm »
After the visit to Kuhl, Argali visits the ledge overlooking Haven once more. She discusses the events with whomever went, or those who were unable to attend but would like to know more.
"Well, it zeems Argali's idle [POST=1467112]zpeculation[/POST] was just that. The Bastion did not die from the Dragon Poizon. He died frrom the wounds inflicted by the Tarrnished Death. Zis iz the drragon, alzo known as the Ractrafieroz. He was the one Argali [POST=1466522]mentions[/POST] who had Brrenuth laid siege to by the giants to ask who iz opening the Path of the Claw. "As many zuspected after the visit to the Deepening Dark, the Shadrixkayl has been in league with the Cult of the Green Dragon. But not just that, the Shadrixkayl is in partnerzhip with the Ractrafieroz, and togetherr they werre in league with the Cult. "Zis included the Ractrafieroz brreaking down the gates of Westgate for the Cult, which iz cauzing the final fall of Kuhl." She pauses to allow the gravity of this to sink in. "Yes, drragons helping the Green Drragon Cult, the verry zame Cult who iz poizoning and enzlaving otherr drragons." She furrows her brow and rubs her temples in response to this seeming grand act of betrayal. "The stakes to commit zuch an atrrocity must be high, no? "And indeed, it zeems they werre. Farr higherr then many of us arre apprreciating. Forr what would they do zuch a thing? The Tearr of Orrn, no less." She pauses again to allow the gravity of that to sink in or perhaps explain the implications(1). "However, the return of the Tearr of Orn to Fisterion zeemingly brroke the barrgain between the Cult and these two drragons. And as we have learnt, drragons do not like to have theirr bargains brroken. The attack on Lerrigard by the Snowtooth attests to that. Zo, in retaliation for the Cult being unable to zupply the Tearr of Orrn, Ractrafieroz attacks and kills the Bastion." She shakes her head at the machinations and acts of skullduggery. She then takes a slow breath. "And who do we have to thank forr zis inforrmation?" She grits her teeth despite herself, before answering. "The Black Wizarrds, it would zeem. And, and not only that, it zeems they arre keeping trrack of the numberr of times they have helped us(2), and at the very least it would zeem they conziderr us in theirr debt, orr worrse, perrhaps even allies." [SIZE=10](1) for those who don't know, she explains the Tear of Orn is one of a pair of scrying devices. Orn's Tear allows the holder to scry across the lands. Orn's Tear is "traditionally" held by Fisterion and was stolen from him and used by the Cult to track down dragons to poison and enslave. It was subsequently returned to Fisterion after the attack on Molvaren's castle (but only just). Its partner, Ausir's Tear, blocks such scrying. Ausir's Tear is "traditionally" held by Shadrixkayl. This distributed ownership helps maintain the balance of power between Fisterion and Shadrixkayl, who are rivals. It was suspected that the Cult has had access to Ausir's Tear, and if Shadrixkayl has indeed been in league with the Cult, this would seem to be confirmed. (2) if asked how the Black Wizards have helped, she says they take credit for showing us the way to Shadrixkayl, and for this latest bit of information. She points out that it has been suspected that the Black Wizards were behind the Cult, or allowed them use of their Bloodpool of the creation of the half-dragons, but these suspicions have so far been unsubstantiated.[/SIZE] The following users thanked this post: EdTheKet
