Layonara Server / Updated Deity Entries
« on: May 16, 2009, 02:59:55 pm »
Hello everyone,

The last few weeks, several volunteers have helped in creating summaries of the new deity texts.

These summaries will be around 2 pages long, so approximately 56 pages of new deity information will be put on LORE in the near future.

We do, however, have far more, this is less than a third of the information that will be in "Layonara: The Pantheon". We're not clear on when this will be released yet, but with our recent endeavors of a version online and the policy refactoring we thought it a good idea to also release part of the new lore.

We'll update you as we go along and the information is put on LORE.

A few words of caution:
- some dogmas have had an overhaul so will look a bit different, some will be broader in scope, others will have a narrower scope.
- some deity texts that are in the current Pantheon book (2006 version) have been completely re-written as their initial authors did not allow us to use the texts. This also means some sects or parts of some churches will no longer exist, and will in fact never have existed.
All of these however, should find a new home inside the new church organization. I'll take questions on these once they've been released.

Note that no new entries have been posted yet, we'll let you know when we start and how we progress so that you don't click through LORE needlessly!
Once they're there, I will be taking questions on the new entries in the "Ask a Gamemaster" forums.

Last but not least, some words of thanks:
Thanks to all the writers for writing the new deity texts!
Thanks to rowana, Dezza, ycleption, Minerva for the summarizing.
Thanks go to OneST8 and orth for setting up the Trac system to manage this.
Thanks in advance to our LORE volunteers to put it all on LORE in the desired format!

Thank you for reading this, let me know if you have questions,

Ed

General Discussion / lore vs LORE
« on: March 22, 2009, 09:43:28 am »
I've seen some mixing up of the word 'lore' and the abbreviation 'LORE', so I thought I'd try and clear that up.

Here we go.

lore: That which is or may be learned or known; the knowledge gained from tradition, books, or experience; often, the whole body of knowledge possessed by a people or class of people, or pertaining to a particular subject; as, the lore of the Egyptians; priestly lore; legal lore; folklore. "The lore of war." So in our case, the lore of Layonara.

LORE: Layonara Official Reference Encyclopedia, our online wiki-like system that contains part of the lore.

So for example, character bios are reviewed against lore, not necessarily against LORE.

Hope that clarifies!

Ed

Roleplaying / Shadowdancers
« on: January 17, 2009, 11:33:54 am »
There has been some unclarity about the Shadowdancer class, or at least things have been left unclear. This post remedies that for the most part, although everyone should realize that a 100% fit is not going to be possible due to Layonara moving away from D&D.

In the new Cosmology (which is not that new anymore) there is no longer a Shadow Plane. In fact, there never was one.
This poses a bit of a problem for the Shadowdancer class, as some abilities of this class were rooted in the Plane of Shadow.

This post intends to clarify that situation, in summary, most abilities of the Shadowdancer will be seen as spells like how the sorceror class has spells (except in contrast to the sorceror, you can be trained to be an SD. Training can vary per individual and is up to the GM running the CDQ)). Others will be physical or mental abilities.

-   Hide in Plain Sight: this is a combination of being good at hiding and using whatever is available as cover, as well as a form of invisibility (so a combo of magic and physical means)
-   Darkvision: purely physical
-   (Improved) Evasion: physical
-   Uncanny Dodge: physical
-   Shadow Daze: a spell
-   Summon Shadow: a shadow is summoned from a lower frequency world, see here http://forums.layonara.com/layonara-server/126742-cosmology-faq.html
These are not undead (although NWN says they are). They are also not “shadow elementals” (i.e. they are not creatures of solidified shadow).
-   Shadow Evade: spell, kind of like a concealment spell, but then more like blending in with shadows instead of becoming blurry
-   Defensive roll: physical
-   Slippery Mind: physical/mental

Shadowdancers who RP that they make shadows dance by making gestures with fingers and hands are merely good at manipulating light and shadow. They cannot make other people’s shadow move or something like that.

Note regarding The Veil: her additional powers stem from the successful completion of a WLDQ. Future shadowdancers will not necessarily gain the same powers, nor replace or succeed The Veil, nor necessarily deal with the same entities that gave her her powers.

Server Rules / Clarifying note on regeneration
« on: January 16, 2009, 02:32:55 am »
Minerva raised a good point recently, and after talking to Leanthar, we've come up with some more, and came up with the following rules of thumb for everyone out there on how regeneration works on Layonara.

- f you lost a limb/body part, and you still have the wound, it regenerates if you have regeneration cast on you. You do not have to have the lost limb/body part in order for it to grow back.

 - A lost limb/body part cannot regenerate if the wound has healed normally (bandage or time), or by magic means (like a Cure Minor Wounds).

(i.e. if somebody lost a leg last year, and a regeneration spell is cast a year later, the leg doesn't grow back, or Chanda who lost her finger years ago, will not get it back if she now has regeneration cast on her)

 - if you are raised or resurrected, you return to full health, all limbs/body parts attached.

-if you are a person that already misses a limb/body part, and that limb/body part loss was healed by normal or magic means in the past, and you get raised/resurrected, you do not come back with that limb/body part.

- if you lose a limb/body part because of a disease, this is not cured by regeneration or after raising/resurrecting

- if you lose a limb/body part because of a curse, this is not cured by regeneration or after raising/resurrecting.

- lost limbs/body parts can only be restored/returned by major NPC (GM controlled), ritualistic healing magic involving several clerics (under GM supervision), CDQ or artefact under GM control. (We don't want players able to negate silly and stupid decisions or actions by simply casting a spell like regeneration.). Loss of a limb or body part is done by RP, so the return of a limb/body part will also involve RP.

- dismemberment/mutilation/torture is to be available to Evil PCs (within reason, and all players involved consenting OOCly). It cannot be forced on a player character without this consent, this is griefing and not allowed (regardless of the fact that it would indeed be possible, it is griefing, so do not do it)

Other points:
- Regeneration on an item is considered the same as regeneration from the spell.
- Vampiric regeneration is considered the same as regeneration from the spell, except it goes in bursts as this heals you for the damage you deal.
- Cure XXX Wounds and the Heal spell, or healing potions, do not discriminate between wounds. When used, as much damage as the spell/potion can heal is healed.

If there's any questions, please post them here.

In many a town and village that is frequented by the people listed below, shadowy figures spring from nowhere and attack innocent bystanders or the people themselves.

It does not take long for them to be called cursed or bewitched by the common folk. They are spoken about behind their backs and some are no longer openly welcomed in some places.

Rumour Has It / The Lucindites are in league with Pyrtechon!
« on: November 25, 2008, 04:43:55 pm »
Rumor has it that two nights ago, a group of commoners defiled a shrine of Lucinda in Port Hempstead in the dead of night. They called the few Lucindites present dragonlovers, collaborators and traitors.

Merchants out of Port Hempstead spread a tale of the church of Lucinda being in league with the legendary dragon Fisterion, and are bent on destroying all cities on Mistone, like the white dragon did with Leringard.
When these merchants are asked about how they come by this, they state it was stated by somebody dressed in Lucinda's colors, in the middle of Port Hempstead in broad daylight. Many a passer-by had heard it.

The rumor spreads like wildfire across Brelin and into Trelania.

Most common folk nod their heads when hearing the story "Always said them magickers cannot be trusted! Now they're in league with the Destroyer! We're all going to die!"

Rumour Has It / Decision of the Diet of Lor
« on: October 19, 2008, 01:23:20 pm »
The following is decreed at the end of 1433 by the Diet of Lor.

To whom it may concern,

Due to the actions of some members of the Leringard Arms and Trade on the continent of Voltrex, the Diet of Lor, at the request of Angela Swann, has decided that all vessels from the aforementioned organization and all its products, will be taxed an additional 50%.

In addition, in the interest of keeping our crime rates low, the half-orc known as G'ork is now a persona non grata (unwanted person) in our city and will be arrested if he enters.

Rumour Has It / A rumor from Voltrex
« on: September 02, 2008, 03:52:33 pm »
Starting in 1433, rumor slowly made its way across the world that the Elves, in a particular show of unity, have decided to rebuild the legendary elven city of Ovdear.

Voices say that there was actually a direct clash of two proposals that were voted upon in the elven ruling body, the Niasa.

Now, in 1437, several trading guilds claim to have received orders for shipments of silver, gold, titanium and even mithril that are to be shipped to Saidinia.

On the other hand, a new song has come up in many a seaside tavern...

Elven kind, oh elven kind,
the grains have ceased to fall.
Optimism rules your lives,
yet ruin shall come to y'all.

The hourglass is empty now,
for it has not been turned.
Soon you shall learn the hard way,
That those who play with fire get burned.

Build away with trees and rocks,
Grow them any way you wish.
Unity you have not found,
The darkness is unbound.

Some people wonder what it means, but most do not... After all, who cares about the elves? They don't care for them now do they?

General Discussion / Dead modem
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:12:59 am »
My modem died yesterday, so I am without internet at home. Occassionally I can hitch a ride on the wireless network of one of my neighbours, but that's a bit unstable so that is sometimes down or the signal strength is too low.

So until I have a new one (I ordered it just now) I will be a bit scarce.

If you therefore are waiting on a reply to a PM, you know why I'm not replying.

Greetings!

As most of you are aware, there were/are posters out there posted by Kobal Bluntaxe after certain events during a session of my Dissolution series.

This series was (and still is) timebubbled until the series ends (which will be quite soon). I hadn't entirely considered all this when I gave Harlas permission to post on the forums already, in hindsight, I should probably have waited until the end of the timebubbling. My mistake.

Anyway, now to fix things.

Therefore, the following things apply:
1) Until further notice, please consider the posters as not posted yet. Once Dissolution is released from its timebubble, I will bump them.
2) Until the bumping under #1 has happened, please do not act against the characters mentioned, or Kobal, or NPCs, as technically this has not come to pass yet.
3) The people on Dissolution who are Voltrex will not have heard of this yet, even though they are in the same timebubble. This incident coincided with you leaving the cave and returning to the Golden Forest and the events that transpired there.

Then once Dissolution is re-inserted into the timeline, we'll kick events in motion again and everyone can RP all this.

My apologies for the confusion, but I think the above is the best way to handle this.

Thanks,
EdTheKet

General Discussion / The Calendar, Quests, and open&closed parties
« on: June 21, 2008, 07:23:48 am »
Dear all,

I would like to take a few minutes to clarify the use of the calendar for quests. The reason for this is that I received a request for no longer putting quests on the calendar if they are "closed".

"Closed" meaning that the party is limited to, for example, the attendees of a previous session (if the quest is multiple part or part of a series), or limited to those invited for somebody's CDQ.

I thought that if I receive such a request of one person, there must be others out there with a similar feeling. Hence this post.

This request will not be granted because of the following reasons:
1) Based on the locations the GM plans to use, as well as the spawns, quests can be geared towards a certain level range therefore excluding part of the player base who do not have characters in this range. We try to have quests for all ranges though.

2) If the quest consists of multiple parts, or is part of a series, the party may be in a location at the end of a quest (e.g. deep in the Deep) where it would not make a lot of sense to all of a sudden have new people appearing.

3) the calendar is used by players to schedule their playtime based on quests. If only part of the quests were showing, scheduling would be difficult.

4) the calendar is used by GMs to schedule their quests based on server availability so that we do not have 4 quests at the same time. If only part of the quests were showing, scheduling would be difficult.

5) If it is a CDQ, the player for whom the CDQ is run is allowed to limit the attendees. In many cases, it wouldn't make sense for characters who the CDQ-character has never seen before to showup all of a sudden. If we wouldn't put these on the calendar, we'd also have problems with #3 and #4.

So if you consider all of the above, all quests, regardless of being open or closed should be on the calendar. If we didn't do that, we could have problems with server load, quests using the same areas because people didn't know there was another quest planned at the same time, or players being on two series at the same time and not able to attend one of them if they were planned at the same time.

Therefore, the best we can do is put everything on the calendar, and indicate when&where it starts and who can attend and who cannot, because then everybody knows what to expect.

Thank you for your time reading this.
On behalf of the GM team,
EdTheKet
