Locales / Mistone: The High Forest
« on: September 10, 2004, 03:56:00 pm »
Just north of the Greypeak Mountains, the High Forest sits as the northernmost territory of Mistone. Settlements in the forest are rare, due to the isolationist nature of the rangers, druids, woodsmen and centaurs who call it home.  For beautiful scenery, the forest is unmatched: placid Unicorn River winds its way lazily through the trees, Lake Sieron sparkles under the suddenly open sky, and a visit to the tranquil Harmony Grove with its shrine to Katia has been known to rejuvenate many soul-weary adventurers.  The forest is not a visitor’s paradise, however; orcs, ogres, orogs and a variety of other foul beings maraud through its trees and glades. Many say that the forest conceals entrances to the Underdark, but the civilized denizens of the forest are tight-lipped about the veracity of such a rumor.

Races of Layonara / Half-Elves
« on: September 10, 2004, 03:41:00 pm »
Born from a human and an elf, half-elves combine the best features of both races. Physically, they resemble their elfish parent with pointed ears and a willowy build, but they possess markedly human curiosity and ambition.  Their stature is diverse, with taller half-elves nearing 6 feet while the shortest measure a tad under 5 feet. They diverse heritage also leads to great weight range with some as slight as 110 pounds while some grow to a prodigious 200 pounds. They are welcomed by both of their parental races, but they never fully assimilate into one race or the other due to the boundaries imposed by their mixed heritage.  While they may not live as long as full-blooded elves, they still have substantially longer lives than humans, with the oldest half elves reaching 170 years old. They become adventurers for the same reasons that their human and elfish counterparts do and they are typically well-rounded and capable adventurers.

*Player character Half Elves can understand the elven language, but to be able to speak and read/write it they must either learn it through roleplay in game or have a clearly defined reason to in their submission biography. Their intelligence must be a minimum of 12 to receive the ability to be fluent in another language.

Races of Layonara / Half-Orcs
« on: September 10, 2004, 03:40:00 pm »
Half-orcs are the product of orc and human parents, inheriting traits from both of their parents. They are an extremely strong race of people, but they tend to be somewhat stupid and have difficulty communicating.  They are predisposed to fight and are often hotheaded and impulsive. Half-orcs who can control their emotions, however, make quite capable adventurers. All half-orcs are excellent warriors and can deal out a lot of damage to their foes.  On average, half-orcs are about the same height as humans (around 5-6 feet), though, they tend to weigh a bit more, generally between 150 and 300 pounds.  They live about as long as humans do. Half-orcs tend to inherit the physical qualities of orcs, including long, tusklike teeth, greenish skin, and coarse hair, which makes it hard for them to hide their parentage.  Half-orcs are a rare race, so it is difficult to assume why they become adventurers. Many believe that half-orcs find a natural niche in adventuring, a profession where their physical prowess earns them rewards, respect, and even admiration.

Histories and Content / Bindstones
« on: August 04, 2004, 09:19:00 am »
Created in Layonara’s distant past by the now forgotten Master Wizards of the Academy of High Magery, stones called bindstones are scattered across the lands. Long dormant, and probably powered by both divine and arcane magics, these bindstones have, for some obscure reason, come alive again in recent years.  Nobody is sure exactly how, but it seems to allow the souls of those who have been summoned to the defense of Layonara and who do not wish to journey onward to the Planes, to be whisked away at the moment of death and return to the bindstone they bound themselves too.   At the moment, scholars think that a small part of the soul’s lifeforce, for lack of a better term, is lost in this process, mayhaps ‘paying’ for the bindstones magic in some fashion, hence probably the almost freezing cold bodies of those who use this process.

ENTRY 1
Locked up with Rev and Gotak inside a tower somewhere in broken Forest with little hope of getting out alive, Brac’ar decides this is as good at time as any to start his journal. That way, if his corpse is ever found here, people might get an idea of his exploits and perhaps even bring the journal to his parents in Shoufal.
Sitting himself down before the fireplace, wondering who lighted it in the first place, he takes out some of his still empty scrolls and starts to write.
A couple of weeks ago something strange happened. But the way things are going here; people will soon start considering these things normal…
Anyway, a goblin ran into Hlint, shouting it needed help because its clan was being kidnapped by ‘Big Beasties’. The Goblin was from the Redlight Goblin clan, just outside of Hlint. I and my companions went to investigate and just when we got there, we were beset by fire giants! We managed to defeat them so they could not take the last group of goblins still there.
We followed the tracks they had made in order to see if we could save the rest of the clan and ended up at Ogre’s Rest and we immediately felt an evil presence. I scouted ahead being invisible and when I wanted to cross a small hill I saw him.

Fisterion, the Ancient Red Dragon

I didn’t know how fast to move back. I told my companions and we decided to eavesdrop from behind the hill. Fisterion was talking to the fire giant leader, who had to kidnap them goblins in order to keep ‘the pesky adventurers from Hlint’ occupied while Fisterion acquired an ancient artifact. After that he flew off and left his ‘right Claw’ a small red wyrmling called Flare, in charge of the giants and of getting the artifact.
We decided to charge the giants, capture Flare and make him tell where the artifact was. The first part succeeded, we defeated the giants, but Flare got away, his flight protected by a group of Orogs. Of course we did manage to free the goblins, but not without some losses on our side. Luckily, the fallen ones were restored to us.

We got back to Hlint to claim our reward for rescuing them goblins then pressed on to Melnon since we had spotted Orogs near a cave there before and figured this might be where Flare went.
We went into the cave and were attacked by scores of fire elementals of all shapes and sizes. What a sight they were! If only I could control one myself one day, that would indeed be mastery of fire!
We fought our way to the bottom of the cave, where we found Flare, digging around in some rock pile. We figured this was the resting place of the artifact (and we turned out to be right). However, Flare was under some powerful protection, as we could not touch him. Luckily Gotak had the idea of dousing the braziers Flare was in the process of setting up, I suspect that if he had succeeded in getting them all up he would have escaped with the artifact. Now he just fled, without the artifact which was picked up by Wilson, leaving magma golems in his wake. This was even a grander fight! They kept on coming until we managed to douse the last of the braziers. Then Fisterion's voice echoed through the cave shouting we would all perish in there.

Lava started boiling up from the floor and we ran to the exit. We barely made it out alive!
Now we could finally take our time studying the artifact. Wilson was reluctant in handing it over to me for study, he appear to be obsessed by it! I sensed it was an ancient amulet of Cold Resistance, one whose powers would be greatly enhanced if it was worn by a dragon. Obviously, none of us could keep it, that would be a certain death sentence, Fisterion would only have to wait until that person was alone, swoop from the sky and take it and then one of his weaknesses would be completely negated. We could not allow that to happen.

So I had to destroy the amulet using Fire. Wilson was getting extremely agitated and kept shouting he wanted it back, that he needed it… I turned invisible and ran away so he could not follow me and I could destroy the Amulet.

Casting my fiery magic at the amulet, from a safe distance of course, I managed to blow it up. An immense explosion of Ice and Fire ensued, luckily nobody was hurt. In the middle of this onslaught a Protector Fire Elemental appeared, which was probably what gave the amulet its power. We managed to defeat this one as well, what a mighty foe that was! I wish I some day will have the strength to command these creatures of Flame…
*He puts down his quill and stares into the flames for a while*
Anyway, Wilson had lost his obsession after the artifact was destroyed. I am still not clear if he was under the sway of the amulet itself, or if Fisterion was somehow influencing him in order to be able to take the amulet from Wilson after he was alone. I guess we’ll never know, but I am happy that he turned back to the way he was.

I am still wondering if I made a good choice in destroying it, since this must have seriously foiled Fisterion’s plans. I was continuously looking at the sky for days to see if he didn’t sweep down from the sky and burn me on the spot as revenge.

Not that that matters now that I am locked inside this tower. We’ll probably starve in here… *He chuckles as he writes the last sentence* At least there is this fire to keep us company.

Races of Layonara / Duergar (Gray Dwarves)
« on: June 21, 2004, 08:32:00 am »
Duergar
Also known as the Gray Dwarves, the Duergar are one of the more commonly known Underdark dwelling races. They have lived in the Underdark for a few thousand years after the various Dwarven nations split up during the race wars. Finding their way into the Underdark, their goal is now to dominate the riches in metals and gems found deep in Underdark. They could care less about the surface with its glaring sun, and do not raid surface settlements very much, unlike the Dark Elves do. They do raid other dwarven settlements however. The Duergar will even temporarily ally themselves with other races to bring a blow to their (former) brethren. They live in cities hewn out of the bedrock of the Underdark. Like other dwarven nations, the Duergar live in clans to which they’re very loyal. Leadership of a clan is hereditary.
Personality:  Duergar hate other dwarves and are distrustful of other races, and to a lesser extent also of other clans. However, when threatened, the clans will put aside their differences and will band together against their enemies. They are known as a devious, greedy people that excels in mining, blacksmithing, and battle. However, they’re not as jolly as other dwarvish people. Trade with other races, be it in weapons, armor or slaves, happens, as long as they’ll make a healthy profit. Duergar are distasteful of arcane magic users and therefore have none. However, rumors of magic involving runes exist.
Physical Description:  Duergar look a lot like other dwarves, however, they are immensely ugly. They’re also a lot less hairy. Females don’t have any facial hair, and most males are bald. Their hair color varies from dark to gray. Duergar females are a proud lot, but hardly ever show themselves since they are not fighters. This, together with the intense ugliness has given birth to the rumor that there are only males, who are hewn directly from the rock.
Duergar garments are bland; they often dress in clothes with a grayish hue, which allows them to blend into the rocks. They hardly ever wear jewelry, as a reflection of light on a gem might give away one’s location while raiding. If they do wear jewelry, it is usually blackened out or covered. Their time in the Underdark has also given them some abilities that the other dwarven people do not have.
Relations with other races:  Gray Dwarves are loathed by nearly every race on Layonara. However, they do often ally themselves with other races if it serves their evil purpose. Temporary alliances with the Dark Elves are not unheard of, as long as both sides continue to benefit from the arrangement.
Alignment:  The vast majority is evil. Those of other alignments are often cast out of the Gray Dwarf communities.
Religion:  Most Gray Dwarves worship Sulterio. Those involved in blacksmithing also worship Dorand.
Language:  Common, Duergar, Dwarven, Deep Drow. Player character Druergar do not receive the ability to be fluent in the Drow language unless it is clearly defined in the submissions biography. They must also have a minimum intelligence of 12 to be fluent in an additional language.
Names:  Duergar names do not vary much from other dwarven names. Their surname is usually the name of their clan.
Adventurers:  Duergar do not tend to go to the surface willingly. If they do, they’re either forced or exiled. The glare of the sun pains their eyes and they want to avoid it as much as they can. Those that do end up on the surface tend to end up in the mercenary trade.

NWN syntax entered into Subrace Field: duergar, Duergar, graydwarf, Graydwarf, GrayDwarf As standard dwarf except as follows: +2con, -4cha (ESA -2cha) +4 to Move Silently checks +1 to Spot and Search checks +4 Saves against poison Immunity to Paralyzation Invisibility as a spell like ability Light Sensitivity ECL: 2

Development Journals and Discussion / Observations by Zaraun
« on: March 06, 2004, 08:47:00 am »
Zaraun opens her journal for the first time after she has come to Hlint and starts writing.
Only moments after entering the town of Hlint it happened. A male, calling himself captain of the guards, wanted to sound the alarm, shouting 'Drow attack!'  Also, I was greeted with hostility by some other people in the streets of Hlint. Remarks like 'Do they allow drow in the streets of Hlint now?" and "Whose throat have you come to slit?"  filled the air.  If it hadn't been for a small halfling, a male no less, I would probably have been linched on the spot. Apparently, prejudice is not restricted to those who live below ground, surface dwellers have plenty as well.
Another strange observation I made was when a dark goblin entered town. He was looking for a warrior to fight. I remained in the shadows a bit, observing. The female half-elf wizard I had a conversaton with went to summon a fighter. I expected her to either return with with a powerful swordmistress of sorts, or for her to take on the goblin herself. But no, she returned with a man. It looked to me that she even deferred to him to a certain extent! The goblin was defeated, and the fighter was offered some cup of sorts, but instead of passing it on to his half-elven Mistress, he kept it for himself. Most strange, I'll need to observe them some more...
On another note, the knowledge of surface dwellers about the Underdark is slim to say the least. They ask quetions like "What's the Underdark like?" and "Can you take me there some time?", as if it is some peaceful glade one can go to! At the moment, I have no intention of giving them any specific informations, who knows what these surfacers will use it for...
