General Discussion / A call to all you malevolent beings!
« on: March 24, 2010, 08:28:10 am »

Tis the night - the night
Of the grave's delight,
And the warlocks are at their play;
Ye think that without
The wild winds shout,
But no, it is they - it is they.

THE FIRST EVER EVIL CHARACTER CONVENTION!

Come and see some of the maligned and depraved souls that walk Layonara! Paladins will vomit and shriek in terror at the sight of such a gathering! Little animals will flee as their footsteps shake the very foundations of the earth! As for those that have yet to meet the other charming evil characters, feel free to join us and indulge in our delightful company!

Now that my self-imposed Layonara hiatus has ended, perhaps it's time we organize something. Why should the others have all the fun? Perhaps it's time we tip the scales and bump back! Maybe we should organize something according to our timezones? Your input would be very much appreciated and as such please post your timezones that way we can find some common ground. Perhaps if we can schedule a group assembly, we can make this a weekly event, if time permits.

Those that can tolerate our presence will be allowed to join so long as no conflict arises. Don't worry, we don't bite, well maybe except for that one in the lower left part of the image, to the right of the pretty little girl. Oh, and maybe even the second female Dark Elf at the top row, next to the handsome male. This is open to all levels, races, and alignments, just take note of the repercussions. Do join us! Layonara Server / A note on world changing/altering quests
« on: February 06, 2010, 05:08:58 pm »
During one of the recent GM interviews a candidate wondered if all GMs were allowed to run world changing/altering quests.
This because he had heard that this was not true and that only a few can do this.

This is not correct. Any GM can run a world changing/altering quest. However, first they must want to do this themselves. If they don't want to run that kind of quest, that's perfectly fine.

Once they decide they can and want to run these types of quests, be it WLDQs, Main Plot Quests or series like Essrantor's Veil for example, they need to check their idea with me first.
I've got many pages of unreleased lore that they can then use, as well as several loose story arcs that still need running and could be incorporated into the the idea that the GM in question has. Or in case the GM has no ideas yet (usually not the case :) ) we can use these and brainstorm.

In addition, I've got a thread in the GM forums with about 6 quest series (with about a one sentence summary per series) that a GM can pick up and develop him/herself. Each of these series must have two or more alternate endings pre-defined before the series can start. These endings by the way, may not necessarily be good endings (e.g. Dark Ages!).

So it is entirely up to the GM to take the first step and wanting to run these kinds of things.

I just thought to clarify this to the community as a whole.

Rumour Has It / Battle and Fire outside Mirtrix
« on: February 01, 2010, 02:18:27 am »

On the evening of Novlar 22, residents in the northern outskirts of Fort Mirtrix were awakened by the roar of deafening explosions and bright red and orange flashes in the sky.
The incident lasted just under an hour, and during which time many of the guards and militia of the Fort rallied and headed quickly north to investigate.

Upon arrival, they discovered the scene of what seemed like a terrible battle.
Huge scorch marks lay upon the earth, and small fires still burnt around the area, spreading quickly, but thankfully dying out shortly afterwards.

Three bodies, the likes of which the militia had never before seen, lay strewn about the floor.
One, was of a slain female, her skin icy white, and a set of wings, now charred and burnt, sprouted from her back.

Around her, lay what could only be described as two "demons" ... flesh black and burnt, heat emenating from their still bodies in waves, fiery wings still blazing.

A few farmers living near the site are supposed to have witnessed the entire event, but as of yet this information has not been passed out.

Rumour Has It / Fire in the Forest of Fog
« on: November 26, 2009, 11:46:22 am »
Fire destroys a section of the Forest of Fog

A major fire, thought to be of magical origin destroyed a huge area of the Forest of Fog before local druids and rangers were able to bring it under control.  It was  very close to a known temple to Folian S'pae.  Luckily it is reported that none of the clergy were hurt though some of the children using the den did suffer from smoke damage to their breathing before escaping out a back entrance.  Most of the occupants of the temple were not present, being at an pilgrimage to some unknown shrine deeper in the forest.

The bodies of several Dark Elves dressed in Corathian gear were discovered at dead in close proximity to the blaze but unfortunately they were bound and thus could not be held for capture.  Rumors abound that a mysterious artifact was found on one of the bodies before it disappeared.   The body of a heavily tattooed human was also found ravaged by wolves and bears and remains unidentified.  Healers were not able to help the individual and his remains were interred by clergy somewhere close to the fire.

Rumour Has It / Unusual Occurrence near Dapplegreen
« on: November 03, 2009, 01:15:51 pm »
While exploring the Battlehelm Moors, three warrior women were swarmed by uncommonly large numbers of Swampkin, close to the entrance to the platinum mines. According to one, what seemed like dozens appeared to just rise out of the mire, almost directly in front of them. Fighting valiantly against overwhelming odds, one fell and the other two were forced to flee for their lives, fighting as they went. The monsters pursued these two to Dapplegreen and beyond. One fought and vanquished her pursuers at the very gates of Vehl, while the other fought and died on the stone steps at Stormcrest. The third, rushing back from her bindstone, arrived in Stormcrest just in time to see her battle sister fall and promptly slew the remaining two monsters there in a quite unladylike rage.

After guarding the site of their comrade's death in Stormcrest until she could return to reclaim herself there, they gathered some reinforcements and prepared to head back into the moors. As this group of, now five, women left Stormcrest, the one who had fallen there spoke eloquently for them all when she issued a bear-like roar of defiance that is rumored to have been heard all the way in Vehl.

Seeking both vengeance and redemption, the group marched directly and purposefully back to the original battle site, without pause and with little comment, slaying everything in their path as they went. Nearly each battle on the way was with, again, uncommon numbers of foes. Once they reached their destination, and the last had recovered herself there, they immediately set about to clear the moors of any remaining Swampkin that still drew breath. The valor they repeatedly exhibited, both coming and going, and the piles of bodies they left in their wake leaves this reporter thinking the appellation of "the weaker sex" to be somehow inappropriate.

Rumour Has It / One Fine Afternoon in Port Hempstead, A Man Comes Singing
« on: November 02, 2009, 12:56:07 pm »
*The tall and lean bard returns to the fountain some weeks later, his red velvet coat now slashed and re-stitched and still showing residual stains of deeper red despite clearly having been washed.  He hops up on a stone bench, much in the same place he was when he told his tale of the will-o-wisp, and begins to call to people out doing buisness or enjoying the day.*

Come one, come all - a tale of battle and blood, of foes vanquished, from an eyewitness! Come, come and hear!

*A slightly larger crowd gathers after a short while.  He clears this throat, sings a quick scale.*

I would dedicate this to the fierce spell-slingers and weapon-wielders who took me into battle with them, and let a bard of little power see what bravery really looks like.

*He then sings forth in a deep tenor, his voice echoing across the flagstones and off the walls of the city.*

This day beneath Bear Island hills,
Before my light-seared eyes,
The ground awash in bloody kills -
We march forth to the prize!

*He drops a register for the chorus*

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

Pressing on through fur and claw, *He makes slashing motions*
Bearing wounds aplenty, *He holds his side and sags*
We battle on with firm-set jaw -
Five and ten and twenty!

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

Bugbears fierce with gleaming tooth,
Gather by their altar,
Holding forth our hard-won truth -
Still we do not falter!

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

We drag our dead and battle out, *He bends wearily, arm extended behind*
Victory at hand,
Ahead a shout and falls our scout-
We make our final stand!

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

One last battle by the door,
My companions falling round me,
My clothing soaked in battle gore -
With battle-horn sounding east!

*He raises his voice an octave for the last chorus*

Flee your ground, get out alive
Before they gather more
Flee your ground, get out alive
So we'll live to the shore!

*He bows as the audience applauds, and bows again and once more before stepping down and strolling toward a food vendor, still humming the rousing tune.*

Rumour Has It / Southern Mistone stunned by attack.
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:37:16 am »
Reports are flooding across Mistone rapidly as just as the Bi-Annual Brenuth Mercantile traders market day was beginning an army of giants arrived and beseiged the city. With traders and merchants from across Mistone in the city at the time the populace was stunned by the suddeness and deliberateness of the attack.

Rumours indicate that there seemed to be a number of huge dark skinned giants leading the regular giants in the seige.

The Cor'ys Advisory body issued a statement this morning indicating that it was their efforts that pulled together adventurers and heroes from within Fort Vehl to parlay with the giants after a great fiery elemental appeared in the centre of the town and left a burning scroll behind.

It appears the heroes must have parlayed well for the giants mysteriously left after beseiging but not attacking the city for a week and a half.

Some reports indicate that this event was linked to the locating and slaying of a supposed group of Green Dragon Cultists who, if you believe the rumours, are said to be moving about Mistone.

Rumour Has It / At the Four Stars Inn
« on: September 05, 2009, 10:38:52 pm »
*A white clad elf wanders into the Four Stars in Haven, and speaks to the barkeeper*

Um, hello, I just came from the big Silkwood cave, and um, magic seems to be working oddly down there... just like happened in the red light caves a little while back, and um, I just was wondering if you could warn anybody who setting out from here... I'm going to send a few letters to people I know who can fix this, I'm sure it'll be taken care of before too long, but I just thought people should know...

*she then takes a table and proceeds to write out a few letters. A similar conversation later takes place at the Wild Surge inn in Hlint*

Implemented Ideas / Naming your ox.
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:00:46 pm »
I think it would be nice to be able to name your ox the same way you can name a horse. This way it would be a bit more easier to locate where it is.

Rumour Has It / Commotion in Leringard
« on: August 30, 2009, 05:41:38 pm »
There is rumor heard about town in Leringard that a woman fitting the description of the one known as Duchess (at least by voice and speech patterns) was causing quite a commotion trying to get inside a house in Leringard.  Sounds could be heard coming from inside the house of loud yelling of a woman in pain and curses in a strange language (unless you are dark elven).  The woman's yells eventually ceased after some hours, and a infant's cry could be heard.  A few men went in and out of the house, but the woman causing the scene was never let inside.  Apparently she had been quite upset about it with all of her carrying on, even reduced to desperate pleas and begging.

Rumour Has It / Scuffle in Leringard
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:30:01 pm »
Once again appearing as the topic of rumors the sculptor/playboy Razeriem has been named as part of a fight in the Leringard streets.

Tales tell of a knight of Toran attacking the playboy with mailed fists.  The attack happened almost exactly where the elf's death was recently reported.  First hand accounts say the Toranite was enraged but could not manage to land fist to the fleet footed sculptor.  The brawl apparently diffused after the Toranite managed to land a single punch on the elf. Oddly though the accounts say it was the Toranite that fell to his knees winded.  The cad was seen laughing at the knight and then wandering off.  The Toranite meanwhile was helped up by a what seems to be a friend and wandered off the other direction.

Some speculations speak that the romeo must of had improper relations with the knight's wife, daughter or sister or some combination thereof.  In all accounts the knight was very angery.

Rumour Has It / Hlint
« on: August 24, 2009, 03:22:59 am »
Four Dark Elves have been reported in the vicinity of Hlint by a local clergy-woman who is trusted and well regarded within the community.

Local guards were dispatched to investigate the sighting which was reported to have taken place at the wayside campfire often used by many travelers not far outside the town's walls. Upon ariving at the scene the patrol found the reported darkelves, and the others reported to be in their company to have fled the area.

Testimony states that at least one of these Dark Elves has been said to frequent within the walls of Port Hempstead as well. Citizens across Mistone are advised to be on the lookout for shady persons who hide their faces and report suspicious characters to their local authorities.

Descriptions of the Dark Elves sighted near Hlint are as follows:

'duchess' - Last seen dressed completely in red clothing, this female Dark Elf speaks with an unusual accented drawl that can be hard to understand, but which have a sweet, almost silky tone at times. *The description continues to give details about the approximate height, weight, and build of body of Eleandilethessa Quil'lyn*

'Eriis' - This male Dark Elf wears a face wrap of 'bandages' to cover his skin. *The description continues to give details about the approximate height, weight, and build of body of Mearden Fereir*

'Iradril' - This male Dark Elf may claim to follow Az'atta, citizens are urged not to be taken in by such claims. *The description continues to give details about the approximate height, weight, and build of body of Iradril Arkenrahel*

'Tyillaan' - Like the male Darke elf mentioned previously, this female Dark Elf may also make claims of following Az'atta. Again, citizens are urged not to fall prey to what may be a well practiced lie and not to be fooled by this Dark Elf's timid and quiet act. *The description continues to give details about the approximate height, weight, and build of body of Tyillaan Selaama*

Also seen in the company of the Dark Elves and now persons of interest in this inquiry, are the following individuals:

Verideth Lightbringer - A druid *a description of Verideth Lightbringer follows*
Layl - A musician *a description of Layl Maaw follows*
Alazira - A priestess of Ilsare *a description of Alazira follows*
Elivyan Silverthorn - A Wild Elf, oft seen in the company of a large bear named, "Yogi". *a description of Elivyan Silverthorn follows*
Razeriem - A follower of Ilsare and sculptor of stone statuary *a description of Razeriem follows*
'J' - A man called 'J' by one of the Dark Elves. *a description of Jehoram follows*

Ask A Gamemaster / RP or quality of RP?
« on: August 04, 2009, 12:22:36 pm »
A conversation with another player got me curious about this.  They said that they can sit and rp for hours and never get bonus RP XP from GM's.

So that brings me to this...

This is an RP server so we should encourage those that RP right?  I know it may sound silly for wanting a reward for something you should be doing.  But most go bashing these days to get those rewards.  Seems that we may want to go out of our way to encourage RP these days and not only on quest.

I know I used to get XP several times a week for sitting and RPing. There were a few GM's that would seem to make their rounds and hand out XP for those were RPing.  I think most of those are no long GMing for whatever reason.  So this question is really for the active GM's...

When do you give XP for those RPing and what brings you to do it?

Do you give it to everyone that is RPing?  Only those that are showing good quality of RP?

If it is only the those showing what you think is good xp... what do you consider 'good' RP?

Rumour Has It / A Panic in Vehl
« on: August 02, 2009, 04:36:07 am »

A panic struck the Port town of Vehl in the early hours of the evening.

It began with civilians on the streets exhibiting symptoms of extreme fear and panic, many rushing in a frenzy through the city streets or cowering in corners until the feeling expired.
This however, is deemed to have been a diversion for a more sinister plot.

In both sections of the city, it appears the water was poisoned with a as  of yet unknown ailment, causing the majority of the citys populace to fall drastically ill through out the night.

Symptoms subsided by early morning and there were zero fatalities, though Port Officials and the Rofirienties stationed there are making enquiries with extensive vigour to find those responsible for the contamination.

Whilst many of the citizens of Vehl were overcome with the recent mystery illness that swept through their number, one resident alleviated the suffering with a generous gesture of goodwill and kindness. Arkolio Salvorre of the Vault Banking Institution was seen to be distributing loaves of bread to those who were too sick to work during this time of tribulation.

General Discussion / NWStory - A Useful Tool (YMMV)
« on: July 12, 2009, 05:34:12 pm »
I came across this while browsing Sourceforge the other day, and I've employed Cleave to some success on my logs - Clobber is less useful, since I have the GLR.

Anyway, the link: NWStory.  Basically, it formats and filters chat logs to facilitate things like CDT writing.

Enjoy!
