NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Blinding Speed.
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:03:48 pm »
Well now it certainly is. In a "recent" update it was changed to 1 round per DEX score, not the modifier, the actual score. So for Triba, for instance, it lasts 36 rounds, which is a huge bit of time. Or really, the equivalent of a 36 level caster. So yes, it is pretty darn hot. I like it because it scales up with the character.

The only downside is that it doesn't work in dead magic because its a "pseudo-spell" but eh... Not a big deal I guess.

Rumour Has It / Re: Protest!

The woman turns back on him with fangs bared in a snarl. "Never lump your kind in with me, deep-wretch. If you truly were any different you would nod all too knowingly to why you are unwelcome in this land or any other, like your broken Az'attan penance doers know more than any. We are cursed with blood born of violence and terror, and you among all others are bringers of the same. Get out of my sight before I remove your own!"

Aged as she is, the calloused hands clench in large, angry fists. Behind her the eyes of those working alongside her lose their disinterested haze to change grips on tools. The mood shifts, changing to a hair's breadth from violence... indeed as a volunteers to the civilian guard discretely return, it is made apparent that the only pause was in making sure the dark elf was not the herald of another raid such as those seen elsewhere.

It is at this point however that the Silverguard does get heavily involved. A small dispatch of them lingering not far from the gate barracks makes its way to the gathered group. Some busy themselves with isolating the woman and others approach the dark elf with more decisiveness. "That's enough..." They voice to him and it is fairly clear that they will seek to apprehend him or take harsher measures if necessary.

It proves to be a difficult time for anyone staging political rants and protests in Port Hempstead, as those not working often listen with only dim-eyed disinterest before wandering back to what passes for their new homes, waiting for storms to pass, or worse, noticing that the speaker is dark elven and pausing to throw a stone or skitter back to hide. Those working brush past anyone that offers only rhetoric and not something tangible with their hands making a difference. Among them number a handful of abnormally sized individuals with taints of color to their skin and little of it in their hair. One finally turns around, proving to be older than most of the humans working, growling a clipped but proud reply.

"You leave me and mine out of it, dark-ear. Who remembers? I'm about the only one old enough to remember being outlawed, and you know who makes these damned laws? It don't start top down. It starts bottom up. The first people that start the grudge is those you work with. Now I'm a biggun, Ma died giving the cursed monster child to light after one took her. I eat more. I have stronger arms for labor. Everyone is hungry and needing somethin' to feed what babies they got left and here are these big green half breeds cursed by violence from the same monsters you prattle on for... and well maybe wouldn't we just be better off without them?

"It's only so many times you see someone take more than you think their fair rations are before somebody starts talkin' with a bit of meanness and a big mouth an awful lot like yours. And people start nodding. I said I'd never bring it back to where it started but you know all it took was a little human blood being spilled - what's self defense with a body like that, and it don't matter what was said or done to cause it - and there's torches, and there's a bloody monster hunt."

A few of the crew she was working on are lingering now, hands holding tools now leaning on the ground as they listen passively, without change in their expression.

"And maybe I got it all backwards, but I tell you what I remember what some of these others like me have forgotten - a door being kicked in, torches, angry voices, bloodied steel. And getting out. Naw... being taken out. A man in bloodied peasant rags and some coin around his neck shoving me and hiding me and wasn't it just that same little priestess of your wallet-god that gathered what was left of us while the fires burned in the city and found us somewhere else to go? Now, yeah... it's an outlawin', it's cruel and horrible and yak yak then it was running from riots and a gate being used to separate us. Open the blinkers - this city rules a kingdom. Where you think we went? Died? Well we should've but didn't. And everyone else may have forgotten, but I didn't and won't have you spewing your poison around my ears.

"It goes bottom-up. You just remember that, and if you're so much better than the thousands of raids that have been done topside then you just do like everybody else and close your mouth and pick up a shovel."

With enough attention, guards do show up from their obviously very busy routine and are very stern to the dark elf. It's very clear that they will not hesitate to enforce the laws of the city but are giving him a simple chance to quiet down and go away because everyone is just so busy to be adding more work to the pile. All their weapons are light and blunt and clearly meant for subduing people.

--------

As an OOC GM addition:

Please everyone needs to remember that the treatment of monstrous races is not just exclusive to Port Hempstead. Every city in the world with the exception of those few kingdoms that simply turn a blind eye (Fort Vehl) or are under an autocracy (Prantz) and everyone is treated with the same hard fist.

However, if one were to enter any other "normal" city or town. Dark Elves, Half-Orcs, and all the other darker types of races -would- be shot down and killed. Some towns might just stone them, others might just shove them around or simply give them the evil eye, but as a player your "average" should not be "welcomed everywhere".

Everyone that applies for monstrous races needs to remember this because while it cannot be enforced 24/7 by all DMs, it certainly is something that all these players have to agree to roleplay.

Nope. The bonuses are hidden, or to be more specific, they are actually penalties to larger creatures not something you see on your character sheet.

Many of patrons of one of the establishments cobbled back together in the midst of the ongoing devastation listen tiredly with hints of interest here and there, while near the door a tall human with gray at his temples listens intently with his lips pressed together. His leathers and what's left of a tabard are filthy from the work in the city, but the silver coin around his neck is all that remains to mark him as a member of the Silverguard.

The men and women eating some of what has been given at makeshift tables glance between the drunken storyteller and the man at the door when he is done, some more inquisitive than others, and after a moment his shoulders come up in a shrug.

The "patrons" look at one another and then shrug as well, and then one and all push to their feet when he nods them towards the door. "Work to do, then," he says, slapping the improvising bartender on the shoulder as she throws her rag down and joins the rest.

The shouting and sounds of labor outside indicate work crews back to thankless tasks in one of the more abandoned districts closer to the ocean.

A gangly-limbed gnome with a soggy moustache turns to a fellow reveler in their small enterprise of escape in a district furthest from the sea. "Did you blow up any wagons lately? Explosions? Detonations? Decapitations!"

"Naw, naw, naw! But I did put sneezing powder in Councilman Aran's knickers, I did."

The gnome leaning over the edge of inebriation slaps the surface of a salvage-style countertop and doubles over in coughing laughter. "Shadon is tap-dancing over the rubble! Does the Vaeran know it was you?"

"Aw Strife, who you think gave me the key to his quarters?"

"Liar! She'd never."

"I'll never tell... Hee hee."

After Jaelle returns from speaking with some of those involved in the trip, Koro lets it be known that he's not one much for cities and that he needs to spread his wings for a while before returning home. He takes a special time to say his farewells to Pallena and wanders off without much ceremony.

Saralen remain with the clump of the group, while Iona remains alone and when she is sure that none are suffering terribly from the landing, she says quiet farewells and makes her lonely way back to Leringard.

Viperin and Alessia stay at the fringe, some distance away from the group making quiet conversation with Dietro, they wait patiently for Jaelle.

((While I don't mind the thread to state the general actions of those involved, due to the sensitive nature of what was found, if there are any related discussions I would prefer they take place in-game, in the WL forum, IRC or PMs. Simply to keep what is rumor in rumor, and fact, well, as fact. Thank you for putting this together though!))

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: De-nerf Dev Crit thread
« on: December 18, 2009, 07:48:41 pm »
It's not the same though. Even the most powerful of sorcerers only get a number of spells a day. Then they have to rest or use other resources. A melee character with devastating critical (especially properly built to have a lot of crits) can do this endlessly.

The fortitude save against it is 10 + 1/2 Character Level + Strength Modifier. You do the math... That's stronger than any spell out there.

You asked a question originally though and directed it at the development team, and though soulz answered it rather eloquently and with all the proper arguments that such a feat deserves, I will simply add some Layonara history.

Way back like five years ago, a bunch of us balancer folk had to look at all the epic progression because the level cap was raised from 20. We had limited resources as we pretty much always have had in here. As the epics were slowly being passed, we had to balance out an overpowered feat to fit with Layonara's power level at the time. In time, there were a whole lot more epic leveled people and so caster progression was looked at because unlike a fighter or a rogue whose damage always goes up, for casters, only very specific builds would scale upwards.

Was it the best approach to do things? Nope. I will say however that there were a lot of background projects that were planned that never took fruit because of lack of personnel and other similar issues. However, all that said, from a development standing point, Devastating Critical is still the same. Extremely overpowered.

If we would lower the requirements, once again, soulz is quite right. We would have to reduce the save, we would have to change it from a constant thing. It would be too powerful as it is.

I know its kinda hard to always have to hear the same litany. But in this case its unfortunately true. The real way to bring melee and physical damage classes up to par would be adding things like the PRC content which has over 50 feats, not to mention a bazillion new Base and Prestige Classes. However, once again... Lack of people... People focusing on the MMO... And all that.

Rumour Has It / Re: Undead Horde Hides Near Dapplegreen!
« on: December 17, 2009, 12:49:54 pm »
((Just a gentle GM reminder. Dapplegreen and its roads and so forth are not in the Brelin Kingdom which is where Port Hempstead is. Check the map here. So while I'm not saying that Hempstead guards wont appreciate the warning, it's not really within their jurisdiction. Such things are probably best roleplayed to be interacted with any Dapplegreen militia or Fort Vehl which is actually in the Co'rys Kingdom.))

I'm afraid that since Keppli is a ranger, his animal companion progression is slower and not as strong as that of a druid. So no, not a bug, just ranger quirks.

A petulant girl in her mid teens huddles with several others around a fire in one of the refugee camps of water logged western Mistone. She and the remains of her family are trying to keep warm on the blustery winter night.

"Its just not fair" she gripes to her younger brother. "Marlis, Sarah and Trey get to go with that woman because they're orphans. They will have a warm hearth, wool cloaks and boots while we freeze. I wish we were orphans so we could leave with her. It's just not fair"

Up and down the coast in small villages and areas hit hard by the storms there are stories of fortunate young orphans being given warm clothing, food and clothing by a middle aged woman offering passage away from the destruction and chaos.

More rumors spread about...

[INDENT] ...Mariners and travelers of all kinds bring word from Belinara. It is said that the continent has not been unaffected by the onslaught of the elements. However, Belinara's eastern geography has granted the continent a great deal of natural barriers. Alindor's western coast has been blessed with simply rougher waters, and though trade has been affected due to the loss of their greatest trader (Port Hempstead) and the many lost ships at sea, their cities are relatively spared from damage...

...After some confusion, official word finally begins to move from druids down to the commoner's ear and everyone in between. For the time being there is no reason to believe that the waves will stop. The torrential weathers somewhere deep in the Almoran ocean continue. The barriers made in each affected city will keep them safe, for now, but the threat is far from over especially to all those sea-side villages that cannot afford the strong protections Krandor and Port Hempstead are blessed with. Druids and mages will continue to fight the waves at every major surge...

...It is said that after the strange meeting between the Tempest of Mist and a powerful Naulti of Shindaleria, fierce eternal enemies, some active action is being taken to deal with the destructive weather. The details are sketchy, but one thing is certain, hope starts in Leringard...

...Massive vessels (and an equally impressive military escort) carrying loads upon loads of much needed supplies and foods finally arrive upon the broken docks of Port Hempstead. These vessels bear the flags of the northern Dregar kingdoms of Sedera, Succession, Liwich and Boyer. The latter having the most vessels in the fleet. Even though it was expected of other nations to offer aid, the amount of goods delivered are far more than anyone truly expected. It is unknown who pulled the strings to make such deals so generous, but a lot of people begin to breathe a little easier as these goods make their way to western Mistone starting in Port Hempstead...

OOC Section:

Thanks to all that have taken the time to invest in this on-going event with donations and roleplaying. It's far from over, however as I have been asked by some, the donations will determine how the cities will do after it is all said and done. At some point after the new year, depending on a few other things, I will be looking at all the donations and time invested in these efforts. Depending on the results, many will have the opportunity to have unique recognition in the respective cities that they are aiding. So if you're planning to get involve now you know that you will at least have the full month of December and then likely a few weeks of January to do so.

« on: November 29, 2009, 10:51:19 am »
ScriptWrecked's last post summarizes the events of the last wave quite nicely. The city of Karst is in dire need of help and with the arrival of the dwarven contingent, some hope is kindled. There is still however much to do, especially in the aspects of dealing with the rampant spread of virulent diseases.

Creative minds welcomed, whether for good or ill.

Rumour Has It / Re: In The Wake of the Hempstead Tsunami ...
« on: November 29, 2009, 10:37:39 am »
Though from a distance the waves seemed ready to swallow Port Hempstead once more, all the work to protect the city paid off. With the aid of a large group of adventurers, Spellgard mages and the druids, the city was cushioned against the waves.

Tales are being spun of the heroes that stood at the edge of the storm. Of how a group of diverse bards harmonized the efforts of those protecting the docks. Of how spell-gifted formed circles of protection to enhance shielding spells. Of how strongly built fellows kept mages safe with shield and muscles. And even of a powerful wizardress named Amanda that slowed the very passing of time so that all involved had an edge against the weather.

Stranger events are rumored too, of a priestess that for no rhyme or reason began to bleed. Unharmed from the waves itself, yet had to be carried away by her friends as her screams of pain echoed still within the city. Strange too was the sight of a deep sea whale, moored upon the barrier the druids had erected. The creature's presence, quite far from home boggles the mind of sailors and druids alike. It is said that with the aid of one known as Trouble, the creature was made safe.

Now that the city's defenses have been tested against the waves, improvements can be made to it to enhance any future assaults and rebuilding can start in earnest.

 OOC Part:

The city is now somewhat stable with the barrier placed in case more waves come, so rebuilding can happen in earnest. The Brelin Kingdom's network will provide resources for a lot of the reconstruction of the city, but considering the damage done to other cities and all the nuances of diplomacy, there's plenty of room for the enterprising kind to jump in.

So, with that said, not only will player donations be considered for the reconstruction of the city, but aid from other places can be sought as well.

Right now the most significant donations are as follows, the explanations in the parenthesis are for the sake of balance/difficulty:

- Food (Any type of CNR made food - In Dire Need Of)
- Wood (Oak and above)
- Stone (Which we will use ingots to represent, Iron and above)
- Healing Supplies (Angelica in particular)

In addition, to keep the barrier up and running it will need a constant supply of cut diamonds. The bare minimum will be five diamonds per week, or one diamond per RL day minus weekends. A supply of Shield scrolls or the materials to scribe them as well. At least twenty scrolls per week.

Other donations will be appreciated, but donating say for instance a weapon enhancement is not as useful. Consider this an opportunity to make an impact in the world.

Rumour Has It / Re: Devastation in Krandor
« on: November 29, 2009, 09:55:31 am »
As the waves hit the coastal town those protecting it were much better prepared to deal with the onslaught from the weather.

The priestess Zire was seen standing against the waves, calling upon her gift to calm the storm. Things turned grim when her protections waned and she became exposed to the waves. Thankfully, a small group of adventurers combated the elements to save the priestess and now she rests at Kelin's Inn, sporting a good number of cuts and bruises but altogether recuperating.

The druid barrier seems to have held, for now, and thus the citizens are kept safe. However, the town resources look grim as far as reconstruction goes. What aid the kingdom can provide does come, but with the damage being so massive and the focus mainly on Port Hempstead the town looks to any kind souls.

In Karst things could be a whole lot better. The city had very little to no protections against the initial onslaught, the entirety of it was flooded and besides all the obvious structural damage, the onset of disease was near immediate. It quickly spreads to the nearby areas, and the recent problems in Lake Palden are not hard to pinpoint their origins.

Aid comes from crown and nearby cities, but the damage was too extensive and what they can manage best right now is to hope to contain the spread as best possible.

Any and all disease-ending aid that can be given goes a very long way.

((Sorry for the oh so late reply))
