In my opinion it was one of the best NWN video's I've ever seen, the music went a long way towards that.  The quest itself was fantastic...I was really disappointed not to be able to see it through to the end :(

General Discussion / Re: Why X Familiar is Broken Thread
« on: February 15, 2007, 11:06:13 am »
I have a wizard...a goblin, his name is Bilvikki or Bil if you know him.  He has an imp familiar called Anoxis.  When I created Bil, his familiar took a major role in his submission...purposely.  Anoxis is a major part of Bil's character and sometimes from my point of view it can be hard to tell if Anoxis is Bil's familiar or Bil is Anoxis's familiar.  Whenever I play Bil I always try to either show Anoxis's presence in someway, either through speech or more often though emotes.  After all Anoxis is always present as he lives in Bil's hat (which is part of the goblin wizards model), this also means I can summon him all over the place because he's always there.  Sometime ago Anoxis was killed in a quest and Bil was devastated.  He spent several weeks trying to find someone who'd resurrect his fallen friend and eventually he did...but that had major consequences leading to two deity changes as well as influencing his whole future.

I think that an earlier poster was right...familiars should be approved with the wizard character and should play a part in the original submission.  I don't think that we need to change them in any real way, or restrict where you can summon them.  If they're RP'd right they can add a whole new dimension to playing a wizard or sorcerer.  Sometimes I've actually logged on and spent the next hour or so just playing the familiar character...useful in the sense you can get to know him better which helps in his RP.

Bil would love to come and allow you the chance of ressurecting him several times again, but unfortunately I won't be home from work until 18:30 - 19:30.  Maybe next time though :)

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Rangers Spells
« on: February 12, 2007, 11:36:25 am »
Well for me it is seeing the Ranger as close as possible to the discription in the PnP handbook...for some reason Bioware decided not to include most of the spells and feats that the PnP ranger has.  I just wanted to see the ones already in the game restored to the rangers spellbook with the minimum of fuss...some of the missing feats would be nice too though.

I agree Idii that seems like a reasonable list of spells...though I'd suggest that they lose polymorph at level four which isn't a Ranger Spell in PnP, in exchange for Stoneskin which isn't a ranger spell either although its more appropiate for the class and Layonara.

I personally think that giving them such a feat would be a bad move.  Mainly because it moves away from the PnP version of the ranger.  I think that the best way forward would be firstly to grant them the spells they have in PnP as well as some of the feats.

It seems to me that one of the worst problems a ranger has to contend with are his defensive capabilites, or rather the lack of them.  This is compounded by the level requirements and high cost for the more effective light armour.  There are two feats in particular which may help the ranger in this...firstly there is the feat 'evasion' which PnP rangers get around level 9 or thereabouts, and secondly they get the option to take 'two weapon defense' along with all the other classes.  How about giving them both of these, I'm not sure whether 'two weapon defense' could be scripted, but if not how about a +2 dodge bonus feat granted automatically at level 12 instead?

With some of his PnP spells restored and these two feats granted automatically what you'd have at the end is a ranger that would be very close to the original concept.

Barkskin, Bull's strength...no they don't get those.  My first post is an attempt to get some of the PnP spells granted to the Rangers in NWN.  The problem with Bioware's version of the Ranger is that it is a half finished class.  Its true that most of the PnP spells and abilities would be difficult to bring to NWN but there are some that are already in the game, its just that the Ranger hasn't got them for some reason.  Since it would be harder (I think) to grant them feats and abilties that they would get in PnP, that leaves the spells.

I agree though that this would require careful thought as it would be easy to end up with a ranger who wasn't a ranger at all.

I agree Idii, except in NWN they get the shapechange spell anyway,  and the NWN version doesn't go very well with the class in my opinion.  The only shapechange spell they get in PnP is the Tree Shape one, whatever its called.

However I can't think of a better spell for them to have unless it's the teleportation spell 'Tree stride', a spell they get in PnP and an ability our Druids get at level 14 :)

Well to be honest, as far as the shapechange spell is concerned I'd rather that is taken away completely.  Instead Rangers could have the 'Advanced Shapechange Feat' that Druids get, but as a spell rather than a feat.  It'd be a lot better as the shapes are consistant with the class and they are not overpowered.  However I'm not sure if its possible to do unfortunately.

Grr...can't you move it forward a week?  Whenever we have any 'drive' or for donations they always finish before the last week of the month.  Don't know how it is everywhere else in the world but in the UK most people in full time employment get paid monthly sometime in the last week of the month.  The week before I'll be skint :)

Besides which I was mainly thinking about Rangers having spells which are available to them in PnP but not in NWN.  Other spells could be added to make up for the PnP spells which are not suitable for NWN but they'd have to stay in the ranger theme, otherwise Rangers could very well ending up being something else rather than Rangers.
