The Dragon Storm Campaign / Re: As the dust settles...
« on: January 19, 2013, 05:24:18 pm »
8 months on from the end of the Dragon wars in Hilm a seemingly minor incident occurs in Briardusk. It almost goes unnoticed by the rest of the world but its import to some may have wide ranging effects in the future, who can tell.

During the sitting of those ruling Briardusk to hear demands and complaints from concerned citizens of Briardusk the doors to the Hall of Questions are opened foe the umpteenth time that morning but this time those that enter cause quite a stir.

General Krigart, a Deep dwarf of the Rael army encampment outside Briardusk and Lord General Laroux of Prantz, in full military garb stride down the length of the hall towards the table where Lord Amaric, Lady Sesoon Belfrey and various functionaries sit. Their boots clank in unison on the tiled floor of the chamber and commoners hurry to move out of their path.

The two pause before the table and bow before Lord General Laroux takes out a document and places it on the table before the Lord and Lady.

"Lord Amaric, Lady Belfrey," he began. "The document before you includes a deal that was made with Sir Lance Stargazer for the sole occupation of exactly 100 hectares of land north of Briardusk. The region in question is clearly indicated on the document before you. This will become prime sovereign land of Rael."

Worried faces glance about at each other until Lord Amaric picks up the document and scans its contents. "But this land is barren waste, there is nothing there?"

"Then there is no reason not to sign it is there Milord? I must point out that the terms of this deal were brokered in good faith with Sir Lance and approved by Lord Alexander." Lord General Laroux stood straight, arms crossed before him while General Krigart stood motionless beside him.

Lord Amaric went over the document twice and then a third to make sure before passing it around. Finally he took his quill and marked his name on the bottom, a deep frown on his face as he did so. Lady Belfrey followed suit.
"Congratulations on your acquirement General, if there is anything you need from us please let us know."

The Lord General took the signed document and passed it to his comrade. "Thank you Milord but Rael takes care of Rael." He bowed quickly and they about faced and marched back out of the hall watched carefully by everyone present.

Several hundred miles to the east in the Siphe Principality rumours had it that Lady Daniella Stromhaven was about to deliver a child, Jaedon Siphes child. The import of that event was not lost on many politically and religiously motivated people around the world. What that meant for the future of the Siphe Principality and the fragile political power held by Hilm was unclear.

But, one thing was certain, events were moving in the world and as yet there was no clear outcome.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: WL character quests
« on: January 18, 2013, 05:08:50 am »
:) *coughs* Sorry Lance!

Let me begin again. I have play tested a few other servers over the last few years while remaining staunchly loyal to Layonara. I have found that some of the most interesting places had Lore inbuilt into the game. NPC's that spoke about certain events or places, signs that conveyed information about the lands the player was in etc. We have tried this on layonara with some areas you enter and a text box comes up with some information on the area and of course we have made a great attempt with the Bydell castle idea and the Green Dragon Cult war information.

But...we have such a rich Lore base that could become more of the fabric of players and their characters lives by representing more of it in game.

Imagine entering Port Hempstead Fields and the text box comes up saying "After travelling for several days you enter vast sprawling farmlands interspersed with stone and timber structures and small corner markets. In the distance the walls of a great city can be seen. Port hempstead of the Kingdom of Brelin, population...."

The idea of a NPC given quest to go to another NPC to hear a story about a WL is simply another way of keeping information about prominant figures in Layonaran history valid and present. It doesnt have to matter if the character is still active or not in the world for that history to be present. We did it for Blood and Molvaren I think its important we do the same for player based efforts as well.

If there is talk about sprucing the system up so its usable as Rowana indicated then I am suggesting that maybe this is something that could be considered.

I hear what you are saying Dorg but how many WL's are active?

Daniella and Leisa are the only two i can think of immediately out of all the ones we have listed. We are loosing touch with Lore due to not enough of the 'older gen' being around to help relay it.

This is a good way of bringing some of that Lore back to life and bringing these characters back to life. I like the idea that they recount a story of their choosing and maybe we dont have to use a NPC version of the character in game. Maybe its an NPC Aragenite Scholar who tells the PC a story about that WL? That way the PC's wont get hunted down but maybe, just maybe, a player who logs in and sees one of these people they heard about in game is on, they might actually seek them out to chat with them?

I suggested it because very few if any GM's beyond myself include WL's in their quests or impromptu's anymore and the WL system was an important part of Layonara and its history and character development and incentive for others to RP in such a way that maybe they too could one day become part of the fabric of Layonara with their character.

Welcome aboard and yes the Lore is very rich! Even we have trouble keeping up with it sometimes!

Another lesson, this time involving activities designed to help one access the part of you that draws Al'noth. i wonder if this element remains dormant in all people until it is opened or awoken. It certainly seems possible given that the techniques Sein have shown me are similar in basis to techniques I learnt from The Mother and The Father and several of my previous teachers to unlock different abilities and skills within myself.

The Quilyn training seems so long ago now but I remember it like it was yesterday. It is the core of who I am. It is good to be training again in other ways than killing. That is a means to an end. The ultimate achievement of perfection. This, this is for that part of me that seeks forbidden knowledge. If I can unlock the power of Al'noth within me then entirely new potentials await me and I sense that I truly am on the right path for achieving ultimate perfection. Physical, mental and spiritual mastery shall be mine.

On another note I need to find myself a new location to dwell. My wards were not enough to stop the Corathites raiding my room. They have grown bolder since the Doctor has been busy elsewhere. I cannot risk my experiments and equipment falling into their hands so despite the Doctors assurances my things would be safe their it is evident that this is not the case. I have begun exploring certain options and at this stage an leaning towards Succession. If I can work my way into the Leigess of Nehar and find favour with Count Christophe Rennick then I believe I can find a secure location from which to begin undermining Rael. He cannot be allowed to drive the Dark Elves from their lands in the Deep. His kingdom and power needs to be diminished.

Fixed Bugs / Re: One trick stick unusable

Okay I think thats it! My gnome was trying to use it.

Quote from: Lance Stargazer
While showing the item with Ausir I was able to equip it, not sure about the "trick" but can try to check later.

What is true is that I know that the character i was showing it too wasn't able to use it . This was Samantha Manse, a halfling sorcerer , I thougth that the issue would be the weapon size, since being a 2-handed staff would'n be able to be used by a halfer.

@Dezza Could you let us know the race and the class with whom you tried to pick it up? or its just the charge that doesn't work ?

Development Journals and Discussion / Re: Drnii Khuiedr Tyhuekyra
« on: January 01, 2013, 07:39:04 pm »
I wanted to take a moment to record some of my latest findings from the vault beneath the Mayor's residence in Westerngate.

I have not had a great deal of time to go through the many volumes of stored scrolls, tablets and writings there until recently. With Samantha away in Tauren, the Pyrtechonites dealt with for the moment I had some time to delve once again into those archives.

Thankfully several Lorekeepers have begun cataloguing the documents there but it will take many years before everything is gone through. I did find one document that interested me. While it shed no light on the Draconic language it did however provide some insight into why such recordings are few and far between.

The information I speak of was contained in an old Aragenite priests diary, a man called Astrinomicus. When I say it is old, it must be several hundred years old at least. Anyway the diary referred to the priest having read a text called 'Of Dragons and Tongues' to my knowledge no such text exists today and the priest himself refers to it as an ancient text so I imagine at this point in time it is lost to us.

The priest faithfully transcribed one passage from that book into his diary before the text apparently vanished from his possession. Whether it was destroyed, taken, stolen, I have no way of knowing.

I have decided to transcribe the written section here myself.

...and thus upon the fourth morn did the dragon rise and seize the man who dared speak the word stolen from its kind and dashed him down upon the rocks until his life was no more. Then it proceeded to destroy not only the building and library in which he worked but burned the villages and the lands around it to satisfy its own self that none should learn to speak the tongue of dragon kind. Thus is ever their ways, for knowledge of their tongue is power over them and this they will never stand.

That was the only reference I could find in the priests diary except to say that he refers to the dragon in question, a great black dragon, but without a point of reference I can only assume he means The Black plague, but then after the Dragon Cult wars it may be there are other dragons of that ilk dotted around the world still undiscovered.

One thing is for certain, I would love to find and search those ruins mentioned in the diary.

I recently met and worked alongside an Al'nothist whose motivations are purely self centred. Nothing given without nothing received. I could appreciate this and it made negotiations easier as we each in the end understood what the other wanted and what we wanted out of the deal. As it turned out he was an Al'nothist seeking to learn traits that I have acquired extensive skills in, stealth, locks, traps and the like. Iit was a simple enough solution. He would test and train me in the arts of the Al'noth and I in turn would reciprocate from my own knowledge. It was a fair deal and one both of us stood to gain from.

In our first instuctional venture I think he was suprised at how quickly and easily I could utilise scrolls to cast Al'noth from. Even the highest level of scrolls he possessed I could read without error and bring their written elements into being. I explained to him that items containing Al'noth possed no difficulty for me either.

Seins only comment was that if I had the capacity to do all that and read the highest level scrolls without error there should be no reason I could not find it within me to call on the Al'noth and shape it to serve my demands. He also pointed out that casting from a scroll was one thing, actually channelling it through my body was completely another.

And so the lesson proceeded with several exercises he has given me to work with for now.

Rumour Has It / Re: Voltrex Reeling from Eruptions
« on: December 19, 2012, 05:29:07 pm »
Two years gone and occassionally there are rumours from the Elven Isles of difficulties in the North of the country but none so certain as the last few that have somehow slipped through the strict border securities of the Elves of Voltrex. Some say the source of the news was not from Voltrex but carried through the Deeper darker regions within the world itself.

It seems the Azzattans have also confirmed the rumours which suggest that Voltrex is facing a threat to its very livlihood from a large contingent of Dark Elf Houses led by a man said to be the very physical transition of Baraeon Ca'Duz himself. Over the last two years since the world heaved and twisted setting off many volcano's around the place the Dark Elves have established themselves within striking distance of the Elven nation and have during such time mounted a number of forays.

The Elves have established defensive lines and had thus far thrown back with impunity all of the Dark Elves attacks. Until recently when a seemingly more coordinated attack overran an Elven defensive position and also captured an Elven warship. The Dark Elves killed the crew and took its captain captive. Wavemistress Eliena Martoiel was a seasononed veteran of the Elven navy and her ship was no easy target and yet somehow the Dark Elves took it.

The Elves reclaimed the outpost and killed every Dark Elf they could find but the damage had been done, they had lost one of their beloved ships and its Wavesmistress and crew.

Many elves around the rest of the world are beginning to wonder if they should try to return to their original homeland while those who have never seen the shores of the Elven Lands say prayers for their brothers and sisters in facing their challenges, and... others say the elves turned their backs on the rest of the world and deserve everything they get.

Rumour Has It / Re: Lord Raels message
« on: December 19, 2012, 05:15:06 pm »
Word emerges from the Kingdom of Rael that the Lord has summoned many of the poorest and most struggling people from his nation to food depository centres that have been established in several locations within the Kingdoms borders.

In these locations Merchants of the Deep are providing sources of food in vast abundances from the Deep. Rothe meats, numerous edible fungi and lichens and other more unusual sources of food for the populace to survive upon.

Nations around Rael are even now considering going to the Deep Lord to ask for shares of the food riches he seems to now possess as their own people begin to stir and grow restless knowing that within a few days of them there seems to be a rich abundance of food available.

Conspiracy theorists are already assuming this is another ploy by the Lord to sow discontent and discord amongst the surrounding nations to give him the reason to invade and annex their countries.

It has been noted that additional Rael border units have appeared all around the nation just prior to the food being provided.

Bug Reports / Re: The Great Rift, first spawn at the City
« on: December 08, 2012, 04:13:32 pm »
I think what is occuring is the mages wander. So when you enter the city they spawn immediately and begin to wander and they have long sight so you potentially encounter several mages close together which may seemingly feel like they have come from one spawn.

This is after carefully thinking back to the many trips where Sasha tried to break through there.

For what its worth I like the area as it is. You need to overcome quite dangerous situations to reach what is a potential treasure trove of ore in adamantium and cobalt.

As Chazzler says, once you get past the city the rest is easy for the levle of char going through there.

Perhaps it is worth bringing one vein of adamantium before the city for those lower levels or soloists who'd never have a chance to go past the city?

Just to add my Rift experience:  That spawn has always been the same for my characters (1 mage per group with some fighter types) and I've been down there quite a bit, with different parties, with different characters and when my char's were at various levels.

As far as spawn randomness, I think its great and a nice spice.  But, I think that it can be dangerous and unfair if we're not told which ones will spawn random, because we will "expect" the game mechanics to act the exact same way and engage the spawn accordingly.

So does that mean you'd be unhappy if a GM went ahead of you and mixed up a spawn to provide some stimulation to an otherwise second by second planned trip? Hmmmm...

I can attest to the fact that it does in fact spawn upto 5 mages almost seemingly at random.  Sasha lost 5 SS just crossing this city in her time mining in the Rift.

It was my own fault but I did find the difficulty exciting!

Life has been extremely busy in the last few months after returning to Westerngate. First of all there was the obligatory visits to my parents and Samatha's mother. All was well with them. Then it was back to work in the Mayors office preparing the final briefs that we would take with us when we travelled to Tyr-Song and Yalian before eventually taking it to Fort Dragonsong and handing over the program there to the Guardian of the Code. I am not sure yet if I will be part of that group but it would indeed be an honour if I was so allowed.

Whatever happens, I shall perform my duty as Rofirein wants me too.

Sadly I have not seen much of Samantha in these last few months, she returned to Tauren. She has informed me however that she has requested a posting closer to home, possibly even in Westerngate for once her mission is over. Surely they will grant this given the dedication she has shown her duty so far.

On another note I have finally finished putting the last few touches on the house in Westerngate. The package I requested has finally arrived and I feel in my heart the time is near to determine out future together. Now I just have to find the right place and moment. I am going to see her mother in the next fortnight just to set everything in order before I proceed.

Thankfully, at present, apart from my hectic work schedule there does not appear to be any major events arising that require my attention. This will give me a window of opportunity to prepare these few very important matters properly.
