Rumour Has It / Two huntsmen found dead near the Haven Mines
« on: June 27, 2009, 11:00:30 am »
Those travelling through Paruin, Haven, Lorax or Hlint and overhear the local gossip, learn that two huntsmen were killed in the Silkwood, just west of the Haven Mines.

The two men did not return home last night and therefore a search party was formed and sent out this very morning. They returned in the afternoon and reported that the two were found dead in their usual hunting grounds. It is said that the site was a mess and that they were cut down by swords or axes.

Most of the local folk blame the gnolls in the nearby mines, while others claim that the gnolls seldom leave their mines and venture into the woods.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Upcoming quest series
« on: June 20, 2009, 04:26:38 pm »
Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well and are enjoying the beginning of the summer holiday season.

It is time for new episodes of the current plot, the dragon storm campaign setting. Many of you know about it, but likely even more of you do not. So I ask the knowing of you to share in the upcoming weeks, so that newcomers and those who just weren't able to make previous episodes get a chance to get involved.

Sharpen your pencils, take notes, compare your notes with those of others... the plot has developed a lot since it started. Much info has been passed out - some has been gathered, some has been lost and some has probably been misinterpreted. :)

The upcoming quest series will likely be divided into 3-7 episodes, depending on success and/or failures along the way. Some episodes will be action packed, others will be mostly story-telling, and others will be a mix and have other elements as well. It will get dangerous as the series progresses, but we will not limit the quests to high level characters. All are welcome to join.

I have put tentative dates and times on the calendar. Others will be added by other GMs and I will likely remove some. The quests will be ran by different GMs and we need to coordinate where and when. So I ask you to bare with us, if we move or cancel dates during the next week or two.

More information will be revealed once the plot GM team has coordinated the last bits and pieces.

I hope to see many of you there!

Harlas

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Plot Quest - Seek & Secure
« on: November 18, 2008, 06:34:27 am »
Calendar link:

http://forums.layonara.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=9452&day=2008-11-22&c=3

-------------------------

People not already initiated in the motive for and goal of the quest should talk to someone who participated in the "Descending" quest (http://forums.layonara.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=9152&day=2008-11-8&c=3).

I believe that we may be in for yet another long session and therefore ask people to handle any sharing of information and discussions before the quest starts. One option to to meet an hour before the quest starts for an update - of course including people who may provide said update.

Gather your wits and sharpen your swords for this one!

Rumour Has It / Peace and Prosperity in the Kingdom of Kuhl
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:21:07 pm »

* Rumours arrive from the recently wartorn Kingdom of Kuhl. Sailors, travelling merchants and bards speak of a land that is quickly recovering from past turmoil.

Taxes are said to never have been lower, which ensures a flourishing of all trades. Kuhl's citizens even enjoy free food these days because the new leadership has sailed in massive loads of grain and livestock from the nearby Kingdom of Nesar.

What the war destroyed, has been quickly rebuilt. The government of Kuhl sent it's soldiers out into cities, towns and villages to help rebuilt what the war destroyed along with magistrates with rights to reimburse the homeless and forlorn for damages done during the invasion.

If the war was hard on Kuhl's citizenry, they have recovered quickly. Few signs remain today - only few months after the taking of it's capitol, Westgate. In Kuhl, so they say, one is allowed to enjoy peace and freedom under the protection of their glorious draconic protectors. *

General Discussion / World Announcement! *claps*
« on: October 29, 2008, 03:46:12 pm »
May I present to you an announcement that will shake the foundations of countries all over the globe:

"The coolest person ever was born on Friday the 24.th of October! I present to you, my newly born daughter - Tilde!"

This means that I will not be able to check the forums as often in the upcoming weeks. Nor will I be able to be present in-game a lot. I'll check my inbox as often as time allows it of course, but patience is a virtue.

(pronounciation of 'Tilde' in English is awkward :))

People not already initiated in the motive for and goal of the quest should talk to Steel before the quest. I believe that we may be in for a long session and therefore we should not spend time on things that could easily be handled before the quest starts.

Another option is to meet for a discussion an hour or two before the starting time.

Looking forward to seeing you there ;D

Rumour Has It / War in the Kingdom of Kuhl!
« on: September 19, 2008, 11:51:04 am »
* Messages arrive by falcon at various temples on Mistone. From here they are relayed by messengers to nearby cities, towns and strongholds, as well as from mouth-to-mouth.

Word is out about large scale fighting on Belinara - in the Kingdom of Kuhl to be exact. There is talk about civil war, about remnants of Sinthar Bloodstones forces returning in strength, about dragons in the sky, about creatures ascending from the Deep, about fire falling like rain from the sky... all in all, quickly the stories get better and better, the situation worsens and soon there are tales about Belinara sinking into the seas, never to be seen again.

Fact is though - say those who have listened to messengers sent out by the temples - that the Hilm Protectorate has made a public call for aid to adventurers, independent knights and every warrior wielding sword or magic. A mission needs to be undertaken and not everyone seems suited for it, for why else would they call for the independent?

No details about this mission are known, although many tales circulate. It seems that one must travel to Hilm to find out. *

Rumour Has It / When travelling into the Kuhl Kingdom...
« on: September 16, 2008, 08:41:36 am »
... coming up the road from the south of Belinara (Nesar Kingdom), you experience drastic changes ...

----------------------------------------

Already in Nith and later in Fort Miritix you hear several rumours concerning Kuhl. They range from horror stories about demon cullings to tales about the peaceful state of the land thanks to their draconic protectors. It seems that more dragons have emerged - Bastion, Protector of Phal, is no longer alone.

As you enter the Kuhl Kingdom you notice a change of atmosphere. At first it is nothing you can point your finger at, but as you reach Vilsar you feel and see it everywhere - Kuhl is preparing for war. Everywhere there are posters asking young men and women to sign up for the army. Outside the city you notice large camps alongside training grounds for cavalry, archers and pikemen. There is no panic on the hamlets and villages, nor on the streets, but people are slowly filing into the city from the country, leaving their farms behind.
Queen Alise Langovale has ordered the city militias on full alert and has passed on authority to the lords of each city to raise armies. Nothing has yet been said about the 'why', so people are speculating. Many feel, however, that it has to do with the unrest up north.

You travel to Amaria and encounter more patrols and check points along the road there. The state of affairs here is no different than what you experienced in Vilsar - although preparations have gone further here. You stay here only shortly before continuing to Westgate, the capitol of Kuhl.

The military presence increases as you travel north and you follow a small regiment of soldiers that is dispatched from Amaria to Westgate. Even though there is good natured talking along the way, the men and women are tense and know very little about their objectives.

As you reach Westgate you join a mile-long line of fugitives waiting to enter the city. People are pushing and at one point a panic nearly breaks out. For hours you wait and movement happens in small increments - it seems that everyone entering the city is checked and has to answer questions. When it comes to you, you decide to be truthful (at least to a certain degree) and admit that you are adventurers who have come to Kuhl to see what is going on here. After long explanations inside a guard office you are allowed to enter the city, but also asked to return to the guard office in case of emergency - it seems they count on you to help in the fighting, should such a time arise. Probably partially the reason for allowing you entrance.

Westgate is a city preparing for an attack. There are soldiers and commoners everywhere. Farmers are selling their wares for outrageous prices, but the city is passing out rations to the needy twice a day, so that no one will starve... for now at least. Discipline is strict to keep a sense of lawfulness and peace within the city and the military seems efficient and well trained. Ballistas have been arrayed on top of the city walls and archers are posted at every murder hole - Westgate is waiting for something. What? No one seems to exactly know. At least none of those you speak to or are willing to speak with you.

Finally you leave Westgate behind, aiming for either Tammil or Tulam. A few miles along the road north take you to a blockade. A military outpost has been hastily erected here and few people are allowed to pass. Once you tell that you come from Westgate the soldier in charge lets you know that they cannot let you pass the blockade and risk you falling into the hands of the enemy, where you might share tactical information about Westgate and the disposition of it's troops.
Furthermore you are warned that going north takes you into enemy territory - although no one elaborates on what that actually means. It seems that only officers know anything about what is going on.

Among those who file through the blockade from the north there is talk about street fighting in Tulam - it seems that a city militia is fighting for every home and defending every street mouth against the enemy. People are uncertain, however, as for how long they will be able to keep up the resistance. Tammil is lost, so say the rumours.

Hall of Heroes and Heroines / The End of an Era.
« on: February 24, 2008, 09:11:15 am »
* Kobal arrives at Leringard by boat. From there he travels south, ever south, until he reaches Brenuth and lastly visits King Ulgrid in his great halls. He travels slowly, visiting each hamlet, village and town along the way - taking his time.

To onlookers it seems much like a pilgrimmage in honour of somebody or something, for the dwarf is often seen with slumped shoulders, making a sad face.

-------------------------------

As he visits, Kobal relates a tale - a tale of epic proportions. At it's centre is another dwarf, the Warlord of Bloody Gate, Varka Cleaveson. The tale starts out when Varka set out to remove the upstart tyrant Gunderforn and reinstated the true King Rory Rockfist. Hereby he, alongside trusted friends, ensured peace and prosperity for the Bloody Gate for any years to come.
Never truly satisfied with his work and ever striving to live up to the legends of his ancestors, Varka strived to strengthen the Gate, so that it would ever be a safe haven to the people he loved. Therefore he worked hard to organize the defences and train new warriors to replace those who had perished in battle against Gunderforn and the troops of Milara sent to bolster his ranks within the city.

As this was accomplished, King Rockfist offered a last task to Varka - to seek and secure the 'Triqueta of Gates'. A relic of myths, the Triqueta was the symbol of the strength of the three gates into the city. Said to be made from the fusing together of the three keys originally made for deh three first gates into the Bloody Gate, the myth says that it was suspended over the King's throne as a warning that one of the King's sacred responsibilities was to tend to the gates of the city. This was because the three gates were the prime defence against any enemy that would seek to enter the Bloody Gate. A common saying in the Boody Gate goes: "The only way into the Gate is through the King".

An aspiring priest blessed with a vision from Vorax had recognized the truth of the myth and knew it's worth to the Bloody Gate. So he spoke to King Rockfist of his vision, who then sent for his most trusted and loyal warrior, Varka Cleaveson. Together with friends he set out to the depths below the mountains, seeking passages not used by dwarfkin for generations.

Following words of an ancient scroll that described how the King's nephew foolishly had stolen the Triqueta in a fit of rage and jealousy and fled into the lower dungeons, the party set out to reclaim what had been lost so many years ago.

Far below ground, within a hive of ghastly enemies the treacherous young dwarf was discovered along with the Triqueta. Cursed by Vorax for his deed, the dwarf had been turned to stone and the Triqueta wrapped in a magical field that protected it from the hands of the unworthy.
The cursed soul, however, had left something behind for those seeking to reclaim his prize. A scroll case held information that showed that he had regretted his deed and defended it until his end. It had been his final act to invoke a prayer to Vorax and ask him to protect what he had foolishly risked. So he was cursed and his soul tied to the Triqueta. It was discovered that to reclaim the Triqueta for the King and the Bloody Gate, another would have to take his burden. The price of past pride would need to be paid anew.

It was then that the warlord stepped forward and made his intentions known. He made his goodbyes to his friends that had fought at his side for so many years and had aided him in his quests for the Bloody Gate. Then, without blinking, Varka Cleaveson stepped forward and clasped the crystal that encased the Triqueta. He uttered a prayer to Vorax:

"The boundaries of time are come undone, I stand in the gateway between two worlds, Hear me through the veil that hides you from my sight, Help me through this day, Watch me. Shelter me. I am your child!"

These words were his last, for as they were uttered, the curse was released and Varka turned to stone. The Triqueta was freed and returned to hower in suspension above the King's throne, while the statue of Varka Cleaveson was carried back up to the Bloody Gate where it now adorns the throne room as a constant reminder of Varka's sacrifice to the people he loved.

This is his tale. *

Rumour Has It / A last goodbye...
« on: December 12, 2007, 05:05:09 pm »
* Three dwarves are seen by many as they pass from Hlint to Spellguard carrying an old man in blue robes reverently on a shield, held high on their shoulders. The dwarves are recognized by some as Varka Cleaveson, Gravas Hrendhamar and Kobal Bluntaxe, while the lifeless body on the tower shield is that of the well known wizard Godim Harjumaa.

His long silvery-white beard looks to have been carefully groomed and his robes repaired in many places. Even so, clear evidence remains of the sword or spear thrusts that must have killed the old wizard.

One last time Godim Harjunaa enters the splendid city of magic - Spellguard. His retinue consisting of the three dwarves and others who knew him, follow the train as it moves towards the temple of Lucinda.

The clergy here were already notified because a priest stands at the entrance, seemingly waiting to accept the old man into the loving embrace of the Lady of Spells. Two acolytes step forward to accept the burden and carry the shield into the temple grounds, where the body is to be prepared for burial.

The adventurers and dragon-called remain to pay Godim their last respect before his body is returned to the earth. *

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Dragon-called attend!

* This post is tacked upon the gates and doors of temples all over Mistone. *

Heroes of the lands!

Fisterion, ancient High King of Dragons, calls upon your service and bids you answer.

For years has the King of Dragons stood true to the pact that was made previous to the fall of Sinthar Bloodstone. Peace was negotiated for and peace has existed ever since the pact was fashioned. Now, it is time for the heroes to attend the words of my lord, before they are swept away by the coming storm.

May his wisdom be reflected upon you and may you arrive in time to hear his proposal - not for his gain, but for your own good. Corruption plagues the lands. It has crept in unnoticed. If not stopped now, it will be too late.

Introduce Yourself / A thickly accented "Howdy"
« on: March 17, 2007, 06:40:04 pm »
My name is Thorsten and I have played on Layonara for far too long to leave now. :)

I started out playing Kobal Bluntaxe, my first dwarven character, after a few years where I preferred elves both in PnP and PC games. I do still enjoy PnP from time to time, but it is far too rare these days that we get together. Anyhow, Kobal was my first dwarf, and I made him at the same time that a friend of mine created Hargranar Craggenhilt - you might know him as well  ;)

Today I have two other characters (Rashar Moiro Jerichan and Hjalmar) and I became a member of the GM Team about a year ago. Most likely I will continue to torment the playerbase from time to time for years to come.

Before I played NWN I have enjoyed the Baldur's Gate series more than once, together with Planescape Torment and a quick round of Diablo II. Of these the first Baldur's Gate game was my favourite, followed by Torment. Close one I'd say.

In real life I am a master of science in the field of civil engineering and I currently work as a consultant in one of the largest engineering companies in Denmark (which may not mean all that much compared to larger countries, hehe). I can honestly say that I enjoy my work.
I live with my girlfriend in Aarhus, Denmark, in a far too expensive apartment. I am a big fan of books, music and travelling. I try to go to out to concerts, theatre and exhibitions when anything interesting shows up to balance out my many hours in front of the PC at work and at home.
Additionally, I go jogging and to the gym 2-3 times a week due to back trouble that comes back to haunt me if I am not working out, but also simply to stay in shape.

Oh, and I am trying to get back to sports fishing, which I practiced a lot a few years ago. :)

General Discussion / Stupidest death ever!
« on: May 01, 2005, 01:16:00 pm »
Kobal was mining iron today in the Haven mines. It seemed tedious though, and there was something on TV that he wanted to watch, so he decided to do both at the same time. It seemed to work out well enough, but after some time his pick shattered, but Kobal kept pounding without noticing, which resulted in bloody hands... bloody enough that it finally killed him. (kept hitting the powerattack and attack keys on the iron vein without watching the screen, heh)

The lesson of this -> TV is a killer!
