Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Epilogue: Inner Workings
« on: August 02, 2015, 01:31:23 am »
(( This is intended for those who were involved in the discovery of the Conduit during the finale and/or the immediate lead-up to the finale. As such, the situations described below will not be common knowledge. ))The Conduit remains largely static from the time in which it was found until it is secured. The dissonant sound in the area persists, causing some people physical discomfort when exposed at close proximity for too long. The “holding tank” attached to the machine seems to slowly grow less full with each passing day. By the time the gnomes arrive, there is a noticeably less “energy” or whatever it is contained within. In the thick of battle, Milara was able to escape, leaving behind a force formidable enough to draw everyone's attention from his departure. In his wake, a small study containing a work desk and a broken portal are found. The desk contains something akin to a ledger, detailing a progression of “extractions” as well as an analysis of yield based on factors of race, gender and age (which produces no significant differences). On the first page of the ledger is a number written in the top right corner and circled. The number seems to correspond with the last line of the ledger, which together with the twenty-some lines prior, remain unfilled and presumably uncompleted. As a last point, the ledger is divided into sections. Each section seems to total up to about the same number of (presumably) people recorded, within 1-2 of the average except for the last, which is incomplete. The ruined portal is a mess, magically speaking, to anyone with the right sensitivities to magic. While it would take a directed examination of the remains to determine anything more, it is immediately clear that the portal that was here no longer functions. The contingent of gnomes, quite a few more than the few already met, arrive about a month later. They are pretty horrified and dismayed by the Conduit and in particular the fact that it was removed and placed into an “unsuitable” place and that the purity of its design and function were distorted and modified in such a way. Wasting little time, they begin to disconnect Milara's additions, though they take extreme care in doing so and make sure they understand exactly what was done so that it could be undone. As the first order of business, they are able to reverse the guide that feeds into the holding tank, thereby siphoning the stored energy/essence from the tank and back into the five nodes of the Conduit. “It may not last, but it may put the sacrifice of others to good use afterall,” says one of the gnomes. Acacea arrives not long after the gnomes in a manner that suggests that she is arriving exactly when she intended, and she is seemingly less horrified than the gnomes by a large amount. From there, the gnomes begin to meticulously disassemble the device. It is not a complete disassembly; the device is broken down only so far as needed to allow for easy transport. They work with a set of fantastic and complex tools that seem both newly fabricated and specifically made for this task. The gnomes from the secret temple seem to be directing the efforts and referencing an extensive set of plans. Despite its size, the pieces of the Conduit do not seem to be overly heavy or cumbersome. Even so, the workers treat each piece as though extremely fragile. To be continued...

Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Epilogue, Part I
« on: August 01, 2015, 10:23:38 pm »
With little warning, the fortress of Bloody Gate is suddenly a hub of activity. It began a short time ago with the arrival of several persons whose names would be recognizable by the stories told of them. Not long after, a brigade of soldiers bearing standards of Toran made landfall in Anger Bay. The force, numbering a thousand or more troops based on observations, began to march through the wilderness of Morholt, apparently taking pains to avoid centers of population by a wide margin, at least until reaching Bloody Gate. The troops settle into a camp just outside the walls, resting and waiting for something. The wait ends up being not long at all, and with a few more arrivals of storied (and even legendary) persons, the troops begin to mobilize. Joined by a sizable force of Voraxian troops from Bloody Gate itself and a small contingent of scouts sent by the Wolfswood Rangers, a coordinated march into the Mountains of Madness to the east of Bloody Gate begins, led by the same prominent individuals who arrived not long before. And so began the campaign into the mountains, with the mighty adventurers securing the path and the army of troops holding the lines of supply and communication. The expedition proceeded into a cave, and at that point, the details get spotty. From outward appearances, the activity and troop distribution would suggest holding position, yet only a few waypoint camps are established along the secured route, suggesting no permanence to the effort. Observations also suggest a regular rotation of troops through the lines of fortification, some going as far back as the camp outside of Bloody Gate. Rumors of an alliance with mountain giant tribes long left undisturbed since the long-expired truce with Milara circulate among the forces. As could be guessed, such rumors are met with varying degrees of acceptance.Likewise, stories circulated among troops rotating out of the caves speak of a large machine of some sort being secured and kept for study.Within a month or so of the incursion into the mountains, a half dozen gnomes arrive at Bloody Gate. After being allowed to rest and refresh from their journey overnight, the gnomes were escorted along the supply lines and into the cave. A week after the gnomes' arrival in Bloody Gate, a trio of riders bearing insignia and flags of Morholt arrive and demand audience with King Rory.Though precisely unknown at the time, the last recorded case of “Fastrot” occurs two weeks after the mountain incursion with a man who stumbles into Fort Homestead, collapses and almost immediately liquifies. (( more to come... ))

Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Epilogue
« on: July 20, 2015, 10:08:25 pm »
Sorry for the teaser here.I just wanted to let everyone know that we're working to write up the epilogue to the Ancients Legacy plot. As you might guess, there are a lot of little parts at work here, including reward items, RP and lore consequences/benefits/etc., and we want to make sure it all works out correctly. In addition, we allowed ourselves a little down-time, after having spent so long on the plot in general and on the preparation for the Finale. So anyway, it's coming. Thanks for your patience.

Ancients Legacy / More upheavals "up there"
« on: July 09, 2015, 08:36:18 am »
Though somewhat known for its variability, the group of stars known as Giantess' Supremacy has made a rather unsuspected change. Unlike other movements in the skies quite some time ago, the constellation representing Grannoch in the heavens simply appeared in a new location come nightfall. The original hexagonally-shaped conjunction that formed several years ago remains intact, but Grannoch's constellation now joins them, taking up position outside the grouping and situated near to those pertaining to Prunilla and Deliar. And while too the colors of Giantess' Supremacy are known to shift with the seasons, the individual stars are now observed to be yellow, blue, white or red, with no two observers seeming to agree on which of the fifteen stars in the grouping shine with a given color.

Ancients Legacy / Foreboding Encounters
« on: July 08, 2015, 09:07:28 am »
Merchants traveling north from Sloren noticed a putrid scent on the air. Curiosity and circling carion birds led them to a grisly scene not far off of the main road just at the southern edge of the Great Desert. The bodies of half a dozen giants lay in a heap, their insides turned out through the work of what appears to be large and powerful claws.--------------------Heard but not seen? The calls and roars of what people believe to be dragons were heard over Leringard. Though many eyes turned skyward, no one could catch a glimpse of anything besides clouds and coastal birds.--------------------Reports from a patrol out of Hilm Castle spoke of a trio of giants falling from the sky on an overcast day. It is not known whether or not the giants were dead before hitting the ground, but they certainly were dead after.--------------------A platoon of Silverguard moving between Spellgard and Vandery reported an encounter with a dragon who claimed the road belonged to it. The dragon was driven off once the Silverguard were able to flank it, but not before losing one of their numbers to the dragon's jaws.

Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Finale Preparation -- IMPORTANT
« on: June 24, 2015, 10:01:38 pm »
All,As a reminder, the Ancients Legacy Plot Finale will happen on Saturday, July 11th, 2015. We are planning on a quest of about three (3) hours...ideally less than that...hopefully not much more. The last of the wrap-up RP from the prior quest session is concluded. We're now just over two weeks away from the Finale event itself, you have a goal (and if you don't have any idea what it is, ask someone), you have some idea what you might face (ditto), but if you do nothing to prepare before the quest (last minute investigations, following of clues/suggestions, seeking assistance, etc.), you will be at a significant disadvantage when the Finale starts. To that end, and because Rowana and I have a lot to do to prepare for this and little time to do it, please get all your requests, questions, desired actions and intentions to Rowana and I no later than Saturday, July 4, 2015 to ensure we have ample time to respond and address them. Any requests received after July 4th will be handled on an as-possible basis, and we cannot guarantee they will receive the necessary attention after this date. We will make every best effort to wrap up anything started prior to that date.In addition, at least one of us is generally on IRC throughout most of the day and evening, Central US time, so that is a viable option for asking us plot-related things. This also works well for brief interactions with NPCs.Simply put, that with which you collectively start the quest will have a direct impact on your chances of success.  If you wait until the day of the quest to rally support or figure out where you're going, you will eat into the time set aside for the quest, and your chances will be far less than if these things are at least initiated before the quest. Please plan accordingly. With that all said, our PM boxes are open!

General Discussion / Considering a return
« on: June 16, 2015, 08:34:43 am »
So its been a few years but having never found a better server for RP by both players and DM's alike I am considering a return.I am well all is said and done butt a** lazy though so have a few questions....Are my characters still avilable and if so can I play them or will I need to create new ones?Is the stuff my characters still had still accessable by them?  Not expecting them to have retained a house or anything, more bank accounts and storage.Where/how is the best way to discover what has been happening while I was away.  I'm dyslexic so a wall of forum posts will make me go watch TV instead :D

Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Finale Scheduling!
« on: May 28, 2015, 08:43:01 pm »
Hello All,We're getting close to the end for this run, so it's time to start talking about the schedule for the Finale. Considering the group size and the way events have gone, there will only be one Finale event. It will be geared toward higher levels because of what will be involved, but all are welcome. We've been trying to do these quests about a month apart, but looking forward into June, we have some conflicts that will prevent one or both of us from having a sufficient presence to run the plot quest.  To that end...The Ancients Legacy Plot Finale is being scheduled for Saturday, July 11th, 2015 at 5pm GMT/1pm EDT/12noon CDT/10am PDT(Calendar event coming soon)Hopefully we can get most of you there, but if enough of you cannot make the date, we'll have to consider other options, as success may not be possible below a certain attendance.*As a warning, there will most likely be a high danger level, so come prepared to play well and play smart.  Despite the potential for destruction, strong RP will also be very important. With all this said, we're working to conclude the wrap-up from the last session. Once that's done, we encourage you to discuss what was learned and plan accordingly. If you have missed out on one or more of the most recent quest sessions and wish to participate in the Finale, we suggest you get together with people to catch up. Like the most recent session, there will be very little time to get up to speed once the Finale session starts.Anyone with questions or lines of investigation related to recent and up-coming events, please PM me and Rowana as soon as possible.Best of luck to you all! * Success is not guaranteed, in fact far from it. There are degrees of success and failure. Failure is always an option. Failure is not always the worst option. Results may vary. Some assembly required. Void where prohibited. Not valid in all states/provinces.

Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Plot Status -- 14-May-2015
« on: May 14, 2015, 08:37:59 pm »
Hello all!We are getting to the final days of this plot.  As a reminder, the next plot quest session will be on Saturday, May 23, 2015.  Check the calendar for the time. This session will likely be the most important one so far and probably the most important one besides the finale, which, if everything goes well, will be held on the following session. If you want to be involved or have been involved, this coming session is definitely not one to miss. Clues are in place, some with characters, some in-game. If you plan to attend, regardless of your participation in the plot so far, we strongly recommend attending this pre-quest gathering on Saturday, May 16th. Rowana and/or I plan to hover around for at least part of this, but it is not an actual quest event. If you cannot attend, please get together with someone who has before May 23rd.We are intending to keep this next session as close to three (3) hours as possible, due to some feedback we've gotten about sessions running too long. As such......there will be very little time at the beginning of this next quest to play catch-up, so please handle as much as you can before that.We will start regardless, so it is in your best interests to get caught up before the quest. If we have missed any questions or responses, or if you have new avenues to take, please PM us as soon as possible.

Ancients Legacy / Ancients Legacy -- Plot Status -- 19-April-2015
« on: April 19, 2015, 03:02:48 pm »
Hey all,We wanted to remind everyone that the next installment of the Ancients Legacy plot quest series is coming up in a few days on the 25th of April, 2015.  The quest is open to all. There are no RP barriers preventing anyone from attending this quest session. As well, we're nearing the end of the plot quest series. We're not entirely sure how many more sessions there will be, in part because that is somewhat up to what happens on this next quest, but there are at least 2 sessions remaining. In that vein, it's pretty important to your efforts to get together, share information as it seems appropriate and come prepared to RP and play smartly. Some of you have recently gotten some information, and we still owe a few bits of information as well. Ultimately, what you do with this information is your choice, but sharing this information is the recommended plan of action, particularly if you cannot attend this next session. Blend it with what you and others have heard so far.Good luck!

Ancients Legacy / Voyage from Huangjin
« on: April 12, 2015, 11:42:42 pm »
A few days after the semi-secret meeting at the Citadel, a series of ships depart from the port city, each spread out over different days and carrying a fraction of those who attended the meeting accompanied by a number of relatively unknown faces. The latter consist of guards from the Citadel as well as others that accompanied the Lucindite contingent...all of which are dressed in plain clothing without indication of their affiliations. Of note, Rork O'Mallory departs on the first ship while his assistant Maala, the Rofireinite Daniel Benjamin Poetr and Katia's Bird Lord Plenarius Ashaley depart on the second. The remainder spread themselves out over the three vessels. Notably absent is Commander Daniella Stormhaven, who was not seen boarding any of the three vessels. Each of the three ships depart in different directions. With the possible exception of the presence of Plenarius and his rather obvious wings, most observing the departures would not think much of them. Some time later, a series of three ships arrives in Spellgard. Rork O'Mallory steps off the first and proceeds with purpose toward the Temple. Over the next few weeks, the other ships arrive, with the one carrying Daniel and Maala arrives last. In the case of this arrival, the passengers are escorted to the Temple, which seems appraised of their arrival and the reason behind their presence.

----Days pass, and there is extensive consultation between all involved parties. At the end, a counsel is held and the following analysis is provided:

  • The book is heavily warded, which comes to the surprise of no one
  • The book has several layers of magical warding applied, and seemingly from multiple sources. At least one of these sources is extremely old, though if its origins are true, this fact is not surprising
  • Some of the wards can be relatively easily removed over the course of a few weeks time
  • There seems to be a consensus about the danger suggested by the notebook in an intellectual sense, and, at least by the Lucindite philosophy, it does not particularly advance Magic nor suggest means to break or damage the Al'Noth, there seems to be no particular negative to the destruction of the artifact
  • Full removal of all protections and wards of the artifact might well be a lifetime (in human terms, at least) endeavor, but they believe it can be accomplished possibly at the expense of the knowledge contained within
  • There is absolutely no resistance in within the Lucindite hierarchy to the idea of placing the artifact into the Vault
Given this analysis, and with deference to those with an investment in the overall cause, the Lucindites open discussion on the fate of the notebook to those who have brought it to their presence, seeking their input and perspective before its fate is decided.

Ancients Legacy / Bad tidings
« on: February 24, 2015, 11:19:09 pm »
Lost it all...” says the sullen and clearly intoxicated patron. “but what in all the Pits was I s'posed to do?”I don't know pal,” says the bartender. “but you ain' gonna find it at the bottom of that bottle.” The patron just grumbles and takes another drink.Bloody dragons 're a menace,” says the patron eventually, noticeably slurring his words. “Thugs and thieves every one of 'em.”What are you on about?” asks the bartender.Dragons, I said!” replies the patron. “Well...one dragon, but they's all slimey. This'n said it would protect our village from orcs and that, but it wanted half our livestock.”You're saying a dragon strong-armed you?” asks the bartender, not quite believing what he's hearing.Aye,” replies the patron. “but I stood up and said it can't have even one of my animals.”Oi, good on ya, lad!” says another, slightly nosey, patron next to him, who also raises his tankard in support.Ain't nothin' good about it,” snaps the first patron at the second. “The blasted beast took all my livestock, destroyed my farm and killed my crops. And then I got kicked outta town. Rest of 'em paid up like so many sheep.” The man sighs and throws back another drink, which he seems to no longer be tasting. Those around him go silent. In a few moments, the bartender puts a small pouch of coins onto the bar in front of the first patron. “Your drinking on the house tonight, lad,” he says. “Ain' right takin' coin from a man that got nothin' else.” The man, as gratefully and gracefully as he can, manages to place the pouch into a pocket and mutter something that sounded like a thanks.Tell you what...” says the first patron after a while. “Ol' Bloodstone had the right idea...”Nods and mutters of agreement follow.

Ancients Legacy / Within the Chamber
« on: January 24, 2015, 10:17:01 pm »
Inside the large chamber, Tyra and Kyle remain unconscious and in a heap on the floor (unless someone moves them into a more favorable arrangement) for several more hours (somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5 hours). When they awaken, they are bruised and battered...noticeably damaged but not in a life-threatening way. Overall, they feel like being hit by the proverbial caravan wagon being pulled by a team of spooked horses. As well, there is residual achiness in the hand they used to touch the crystal...not unlike when a limb begins to regain feeling after being numb for a time.  This passes within an hour, give or take. There are no lingering effects for either of them, other than the physical injuries which heal normally.Andrew and Zigruum remain dazed/confused/stunned for the better part of a half hour before their heads start to clear. A pretty strong headache remains for each of them for some time after, but they are otherwise OK with similar bruises and scrapes to Tyra and Kyle, as well as the lingering achiness in their hands. Before they awaken and slightly less than two hours after it appears, the scorpion statue disappears on its own. There is no reaction or fluctuation from the crystal when it does. // Use this thread to conclude any investigations or actions within the chambers. This is not a time bubble, and we will enforce reasonable time limits on actions. Keep the thread as IC as possible.  Questions and specific inquiries should be sent to Rowana and I via PM.  Actions taken by individuals should be posted here but also ping us via PM to be sure they are seen. Actions made by the group (or group decision) should be discussed as possible here, but remember to give us a ping when things are finalized.

Ancients Legacy / Rael locked down
« on: January 03, 2015, 05:41:32 pm »

Added patrols and posted signs appear with increasing frequency at every border crossing into the Kingdom of Rael. Travelers are turned away without allowance under threat of lethal force. The posted signs read as follows:

Be it known that Lord Rael, the Benevolent, in the interest of preserving the health and safety of all Subjects of Rael, has decreed all unapproved entry into the Sovereign Kingdom of Rael to be illegal until such time as the threat to Public Safety posed by the so-called “Liquid Death” has been deemed neutralized. All persons lacking proper travel approval from the Benevolent Lord Rael Himself shall be turned away at our borders without exception. Any persons caught violating this prohibition or attempting to circumvent the agents of Lord Rael in the course of performing this duty to the People of Rael shall be executed on sight.

(( Please note that players may make use of the travel system, and we are not going to prevent people from mechanically accessing their homes located in the Rael kingdom (such as Prantz, Haft Lake), however your RP should reflect the travel prohibition rather than a clever circumvention of these travel restrictions. ))

Ancients Legacy / Return of the Missing?
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:20:10 pm »
“Oi tell ya, it's some kinna plague,” says a man sitting around a table near the back of the room in a tavern in Fort Vehl to the others sitting with him. “Loike that one that got 'em dragons back a ways. Ya hear 'bout that'n, aye? Only this'n turns folks to jelly!”“No more ale fer you,” says one of his companions, shaking his head. The others give looks that range from apprehension to disbelief. “Least no more o' that one. Someone spiked it, I'll bet.” Snickers roll through the few people sitting around the table.“B'lieve whatcha want, lad,” says the first. “but I heared it from me own cousin what jus' came down from that dwarven place in th' mount'ns...Brenuth.”“Meebe yer cousin 'ad a bit much o' tha' dwarven ale too, hey?” says a third person at the table. This earns him a swat across the side of his head from the first.“Now list'n ye idjits,” says the first, clearly getting a little irritated. “Me cousin says he passed through this li'l village tha' prolly ain' even got a name... said some ol' lady what's been missin' came back, all sick wit' somethin'. Said they put 'er to bed and the next mornin', weren't nothin' there but th' clothes she was wearin' and some kinna ooze they said smellt like a cow turned inside-out an' left in th' sun.”“Yer cousin got a lotta 'xperience wit' inside-out cows?” quips another, who is more out of reach of a swatting hand.“Oh har har,” says the first dryly and with a scowl. “Ain't 'is words. Was theirs. But there was also some young lad that dis'peared 'bout the same time as th' ol' lady. They foun' 'is clothes outside o' town, layin' on th' ground loike 'e jus' fell there an' vanished. Socks was in 'is shoes, belt 'round 'is tunic. Smellt th' same kinna awful, but was all dried up.” Some visible wincing can be seen among the others at the table listening to this tale.“So then what?” asks the third, apparently drawn into the story somewhat.“Well they burnt th' ol' lady's house t' ashes,” says the first. “No one wanted t' touch any of it. Built a fire 'round the lad, too.”“An' yer cousin saw alla tha'?” asks the fourth, squinting one eye slightly.“Nay, jus' 'eard 'em tellin',” says the first. “Said some was wantin' t' find some doctor, but iffn tha' doctor got any sense in 'im, 'e'll stay good 'n away from tha' place.” He ends with a nod and a long pull from his tankard while a couple of the others nod a bit. After a few long moments of relative silence between them, the conversation turned elsewhere.

Ancients Legacy / Plot status -- 11-Dec-2014
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:23:58 pm »
Rowana and I wanted to give everyone a quick update on the status of the plot quest and what's going to happen over the next couple of months. Also, thanks to everyone who has been involved and actively participating so far.The first and most important thing to note is that there will not be any main plot quests for the month of December. This is primarily due to generally full and/or hectic schedules people have during the holidays. The next main plot quest is currently intended for late January, and we'll get that up on the calendar when we're certain of it.Having said this, in the interim, there will be plot-related happenings serving as backdrop and potentially more information. Also, a few of you have some open threads of investigation...some initiated and some not. If we're waiting on you for information or to start the effort, please get that moving. If you're waiting on us, please PM us. Whatever the case, sooner is better.Lastly, some advice...Please remember this is a group effort. I know that some of your characters are not “team players” (you know who you are *winks*), and that is fine, but I highly suggest, if you are not already doing so, share what you have learned individually and do not, if at all possible, wait until the day of the next quest to catch people up. Likewise, if you are lacking information or wish to get caught up, try and meet up with someone else before the next session. Generally speaking, you'll “succeed” or “fail” as a group. Specific results may pivot on the decisions and actions of individuals, but remember this is plot-level, and the outcome of all of this will impact the world, for better or worse, at the end of it all. A few of you have picked up some important clues along the way. A few of you got some very important information on the last quest session, so, like I said, share.

Ancients Legacy / The next day in North Hampton, Vanavar
« on: November 20, 2014, 11:36:33 pm »
The day after their visit with Biela and Ilselferi Dsearilaêny', Daniel, Tyra, Katelyn, Grog and Stygian pay another visit to the home.  The door is answered by Biela, who is very clearly in a somber, reserved mood.  She invites you all inside and bids you all to make yourselves comfortable, apologizing for her home's limited comforts and offering tea and breakfast. She disappears into the kitchen before any answers can be made or questions asked, emerging several minutes later with a large tray heavily laden with a teapot and simple but apparently freshly-made pastries. She sets the load on the table and dutifully pours a cup for everyone. Taking a slow breath to steady herself, she thanks you all for bringing news of Era, however dire it may have been, and she informs you that the visit, however brief, brought some small joy to Grandfather on his final night. She says he woke sometime after everyone left and asked after you, expressing a wish to speak again of the past.  "He passed in peace in the night," she says. "exhaling the last breath of his life, never to draw in another."  Though she speaks with sadness in her voice and in her expression, there is also a comfort and closure in speaking such words. "He is with Aeridin now. What remains will be put to ground tomorrow."

Whatever ya call a sickess spreadin' all over like.  It's like that, I say!""Yer drunk, ya ol' sod," says the other. "People go missin' all th' time. Most of 'em show right on back up with a good reason.  They just ain' good at tellin' folks where they's goin'.""Nay, this is diff'rent...an' more of it," says the first. "I jus' got in from Khemit a few days ago. One o' them Silverguard cap'ns 'ad 'imself a quite right stack o' reports and goin' through 'em wit' 'er Second.  They was sortin' out the odd ones from the usual ones, if that ain' a kick in the pants. I heard half a fam'ly is just gone, one righ' after t' other, like.""'alf a fam'ly, ya say?" replies the second. "Mebee they's out lookin' fer the first one that went gone, hey?"The first grumbles a little and takes a pull from his tankard. "Could be...but it's all righ' strange, iff'n yer askin' me.  Bad fer business, I tell ya.  Bad fer me well-bein' too.  First the stars, then folks settin' stuff on fire an' such, an' now this.  Hate to say it, but somma dem crackpots mighta been onto somethin' from the off.""Now I know yer drunk," says the second, rolling his eyes a little. "or yer needin' another." Before the first could respond either way, the second is already flagging down the barmaid."Well I won' be arguin' that if yer buyin'.""Now yer talkin' some sense, at leas'.""Ne'er know when it might be my last...""..."
