Ask A Gamemaster / can not access any type of persistent container
« on: November 05, 2014, 10:26:13 pm »
On my character, "Jocoscus" I am not able to open and view any type of persistent container, be it chest or the like, if I could get some help with this it'd be great. The message reads, "You already have an open chest." or something of that nature.

Ancients Legacy / Ships in the Night
« on: October 12, 2014, 10:49:35 pm »
When Shindaleria's stars first moved months ago, shipping traffic all across Layonara ground nearly to a complete halt. Between supersition inherent in many who make a living on the seas and the distruption of their usual navigation aids, most captains became unwilling to brave the open waters and cross the oceans between continents, opting instead to stick with costal runs if they even left port at all.  Only the most experienced captains...those who knew other ways of navigating besides relying upon the stars of the gods...would brave the high seas.  Fortunately for them, the need of their services grew quickly, as did the price merchants and traders were willing to pay to have their goods shipped over those distances. For those who adapted quickly, the last several months have been very profitable indeed.Yet this boon was relatively short-lived, as gradually captains and crews adapted to this new normal, slowly put aside their supersitions as ocean-going ships returned to port safe, sound and loaded with cargo from distant ports, and learned other ways to use the skies to find their way at night.  Now, a few months after the last of the star movements settled into place, there is almost no sign there was any impact at all.But for the new arrangment of the skies, life at sea has returned to normal.

Ancients Legacy / Actions and reactions
« on: October 05, 2014, 11:38:30 pm »
In the two months that followed the first movement of stars, the fact that there was movement was a very popular topic of conversation. As weeks passed, word began to circle around that shipping is taking a hit. Major harbors are seeing a greater number of ships staying moored or anchored within. Only the most experienced (some might say desperate) captains and crews are braving the oceanic routes. Everyone else is either sticking to coastal runs or staying in port, claiming a change in the stars used for guidance and uncertainty about the oceans themselves. In more rural communities, speculation and fear about this year's harvests trend decidedly negative, though no outward signs of anything of the sort seem to be manifesting. In a few places, and particularly those with a town square where such scenes are common, doom-sayers and so-called prophets are beginning to draw larger crowds with their apocalyptic predictions. They frequently point upward, particularly at night, to the "proof" in the Heavens that dark times are upon the world. And slowly, a few people are starting to listen.

Ancients Legacy / OOC: Plot GMs, Contacts and Information
« on: October 03, 2014, 05:29:03 pm »
All,For the purposes of the main plot events, the responsible GMs are myself (Dorganath) and Rowana. We are co-running this plot and coordinating all events within.  We are also having a few GMs help out with various events here and there. When it comes to overall plot-related actions and inquiries and a PM is appropriate, please direct those to Dorganath and Rowana. If you forget and only send to one of us, it's no big deal as we're sharing all infomation and inquiries between us.When it comes to questions and clarifications on events that are handled by one of the other GMs, please direct your questions to them first.Of course, posting on the Ancients Legacy forum is equally appropriate and the applicable GM will respond in whatever way is appropriate. Please note that plot-related posts made elsewhere may not get the attention it deserves. If there are any questions about this, please ask below.

Ancients Legacy / OOC: On actions and responses
« on: October 03, 2014, 06:09:07 pm »
All,Just so everyone understands, we will be responding to actions and inquiries in an order that makse sense based on location, action taken, destination, etc. What this means is that somone making inquiries or investigating things local to where they are presently located will get a response quicker than someone who decides to travel for weeks or months for their actions/investigations.  In some cases, this may mean that world events happen before players get a response on something they started before said event.  Including your character's location and intended means of travel will help greatly in helping us to keep everything straight. Otherwise, we'll probably make assumptions that may or may not favor your character. This is simply an attempt to keep time in a straight line as much as possible. In some cases, there will be a series of events stacked on top of each other, relatively speaking. In other cases, the events will be spread out more. It is the former case where we will do most of our selective ordering in how and when we respond.I wanted to put this out there for everyone to understand our methods. We know some of you compare notes OOCly, and this is fine of course, but we didn't want anyone to feel marginalized or a victim of favoritism (or its opposite) when someone gets a response before someone else.  There is a method to our madness, so please try and keep this in mind as we try and get back to everyone in the most appropriate way.

Ancients Legacy / Stirrings in the Night Sky...
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:21:35 pm »
As night falls across the continents of Mistone and Alindor, astute skywatchers and members of Lady Comfort's faithful take note as Prunilla's Gift begins to move across the sky and away from its usual place around Traveler's Luck. By midnight, Prunilla's stars slow their movement and come to rest nearly directly overhead at midnight. Within minutes of this event, the Great Tide representing Mother Ocean's presence in the heavens breaks away from its place in the southern sky and rolls like a deep-water wave toward the same part of the sky now occupied by Prunilla. With the first touch of morning in Katherian and Spellgard, the two groups of stars begin to orbit slowly around a common point between them.

Layonara Server / New Plot - please read
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:24:57 pm »
Thank you all again for your collective expression of interest in the upcoming plot. This is going to start very soon, if all goes well, and we have one other question for you all, or perhaps a better term is an “election.”For this plot series, there exists a very real probability of character alteration in a seemingly small but actually quite important way. What is the nature of this potential alteration? We're not saying right now, however we'll give the following information:
  • This change is not going to be some sort of “shackle” that will inconveniently hinder a character. In fact, it may generally be viewed as positive.
  • This change will however effectively mark the character with the potential to be targeted by the antagonist(s)
  • There is an option (at our discretion) that the change could persist after the plot series has completed, if likely at a diminished level, so in a sense, it could be something of a reward.

So essentially, there is a risk/reward mechanic at work here, and by taking the risk associated with this potential change, the chance of a greater reward and/or more significant role exists.

What we're going to do is give every player who will/may be involved with the plot quest series to opt out of this potential alteration. This is to say, if you do not wish for your character to be altered for story reasons that do not stem from your own actions on the quests, please indicate below by simply stating that you opt out, and we will exclude you from being included in the list of potentially-altered characters.

We will repeat this request at the first quest session, and anyone who joins into the plot after it starts will be given the same option. Everyone will get to change their minds one time, meaning one can opt-out but change one's mind later (though that is no guarantee of character alteration) or do the opposite (opt out sometime in the middle of the plot), but one cannot keep going back and forth between the choices. For those who have not opted out, whether or not your character becomes altered will be determined by the roll of dice, so even deciding not to opt out is no guarantee one's character will be changed in some way. We are simply seeking to avoid any misunderstandings and hard feelings as the result of an unwanted breach of the so-called “Golden Box”.Please indicate below only if you will be participating in the plot quest series and you wish to opt out of any plot-related character alteration.

Layonara Server / End of GM Break
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:24:18 pm »
Greetings community! As all good things must come to an end, with this post we are bringing an end to the summer-long GM break. Along with this comes an end to the extended bonus period. XP/Fortune rates and GP drops have been reduced, and the Soul Mother is back on duty. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the extra goodies while they lasted. If it is any consolation, I have set a new “baseline” for some of these rates, mostly as an experiment. This baseline is, on average, higher than our previous baseline, though likely subject to change over time in announced and unannounced ways. In other words, I might make adjustments for balance reasons (generally unannounced) and I might have the occasional bonus weekend or experiment with other tweaks to our various rewards. These adjustments are not likely to take things below the “normal” rates that have been in place for years, but they may fluctuate without warning.Over the next months we will be conducting an experiment on what the new baseline for rates of various rewards on the server. We won't necessarily be announcing these and they will likely not stay steady over the time period of this experiment. Meaning sometimes you may log in and see a very noticeable difference but at other times, it may seem much closer to normal. The rates will not be adjusted downward from the current 'normal', so don't worry about that! Additionally, we may run some bonus weekends to do some more concentrated tests which we would really like it if the community would be able to help us out with that. (Besides, bonus weekends, right?) With only the rare exception, our GMs will be returning to running quests and events (though a few never actually stopped), and everyone is very much “on duty” once more.

Layonara Server / New Plot – Community Inquiry
« on: September 22, 2014, 09:02:23 pm »
Hello all!Now that the GM break is over, we're going to be starting up a new plot. Before we do, we need to put a question to everyone. It's actually a few, related questions but they all center around the basic need to know how many of you are interested in participating consistently in a world-level plot. In order for this to work, we really need a baseline minimum of participants. Without that, it will fall apart and become a wasted time for everyone. The main quests for the plot will likely happen monthly (schedule to be determined), though there will also very likely be related side quests and events happening in between. We anticipate the plot quest will span about 6 months, give or take. There is one requirement for all participants that we will hold to pretty firmly. For the main, monthly plot quests, those players who have multiple characters will need to stick with the same character throughout. In other words, we ask that you not swap characters back and forth throughout the plot series. Having said this, the plot-related side quests will remain more open, particularly those that are impromptu, and we won't hold you to a single character exclusively for those events. So, if you are willing and interested in participating, please indicate your interest below. This is not binding, of course, and serves only to give us a head-count at this time. This thread will remain open for the next two weeks.

Layonara Server / Version 3.31.3 is Online!
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:38:24 pm »

Version 3.31.3 is online!

This is primarily a minor bug-fix with a couple of area updates, so it's pretty small and limited. Even so, it bears documentation. As mentioned earlier, there is an updated TLK file required for this update. Download layonara_v28.tlk (contained in layonara_v28.rar) here: http://layonara.com/nwn/nwn-downloads

Fixes:

  • Unit Flag of Might no longer gives a boost to Charisma, due to it's rapidly negative effect on Charisma-based casters. All other bonuses remain intact.

  • Fixed a minor (and potentially exploitable) bug in Fortune

  • Fixed a build error in one of our custom loot drops

  • Exceptional Amulet of Eagle's Splendour III should now cast the spell as designed. Existing amulets of this type will need to be replaced or oxed.

  • Reset the in-game time epoch

Area updates:

  • Haven mines are now blocked off due to quest outcomes. Worry not...something will take its place, but not just yet.

  • Remove crypt placeables in 259 Prantz, Haft Lake District, by request.

Other updates:

Regarding the adjustments for Champion, all that has happened in this update are name and text changes, removing nearly every reference to Champion or Unholy Champion of a given deity and referencing solely “Divine Champion” or “Unholy Champion”. The custom Champion classes that we created have been renamed in such a way to a) encourage player action and b) discourage taking those classes on level-up between now and the next update.

Any players with characters that have Champion levels for some deity other than Toran or Corath must contact a GM to be de-leveled/re-leveled in order to remove all “Champion of X” (or “Unholy Champion of X”) levels so that they can be replaced with “Divine Champion” (or “Unholy Champion”) levels. Please do this as soon as possible. If anyone still has levels in the non-standard classes by the time version 3.31.4 is released, these characters may be considered illegal by the game server.

Enjoy!

Layonara Server / GM breaks and player bonuses
« on: June 01, 2014, 12:49:40 am »
Greetings all!As summer is nearly upon us, we would like to announce a couple of things that will be happening over the next couple of months. For starters, beginning on June 1st, the GM team as a whole will be taking breaks. These breaks are voluntary, and we're placing no requirements on people to do so or for how long their breaks will last. The point of this is to let our GMs refresh, take time, and have a period where they are not being held to the responsibilities and expectations of being a member of the GM team. This is something that used to happen with some regularity, but we managed to get out of the habit. This oversight has taken a toll on some GMs. For others, just having a break will be a nice breather, while others may take advantage of the time for summer activities, vacations and time spent with family. The nature of these breaks is that, firstly, they are completely voluntary, though they are also strongly encouraged. GMs are free to take advantage of time off at any time during this period, as many times as they wish and for as long as they wish. For you, the community, this may translate into seeing fewer quests on the calendar during this time. As for the overall duration, this will last until at least the end of July, possibly into August for at least one of our GMs. On the other side of this break period, it is our plan to put the finishing touches on planning for a new plot quest series.I do want to mention that despite these rolling breaks, there will be a GM presence, if no other place than the forums and IRC. If anyone needs help, has a question or whatever, someone should be available to lend assistance.Having said all this, during the same time (June 1-July 31), I will set up the servers with XP and Fortune bonuses as well as gold (and possibly loot) bonuses. As an added benefit, I am throwing in one additional bonus:For this period of time, no Soul Strands will be cut. This is not an IC thing, so like the last time when I kept it a secret, it should not be acknowledged in-character or in-game at all. I of course request also that it is not used as a license to be reckless or exploitive. The key purpose in this is to let people have fun and not worry about character loss.So there it is. Enjoy!

Layonara Server / Extended Bonus event -- Dec. 20th - Jan. 5th
« on: December 19, 2013, 08:57:18 am »
As mentioned last week, we're holding an extended bonus event over the holidays starting this Friday evening (CST/GMT -6:00) and lasting until Sunday, January 5th 2014.There will also be an added surprise that I'm not mentioning. The first person who figures it out and sends me a PM with actual reasoning and/or evidence (no random/speculative guessing, please) will gain an additional bonus for the duration.

Yes, I know....it's very short notice, but hopefully no one will complain too loudly. We're having another bonus event this weekend, starting sometime this evening when I can get everything configured for it. I don't know what time that will be exactly, but I'll announce it when it happens. This will last until sometime Sunday, Dec. 15th during the night sometime. Also, as a bit more of a notice, we'll be starting another bonus event next Friday (Dec. 20th), which will last until after the New Year.  I'll mention this again, at least by the time I actually turn up the bonuses.

Layonara Server / Urgent information about Layonara on NWN
« on: December 03, 2013, 10:08:24 pm »

Dear Layonara Community,

Over the years, NWN-based Layonara has undergone several evolutions and benefited from various sorts of contributions from our community. Among these in particular are the financial considerations of hosting this game world and the way in which they have impacted the make-up of the game world. One rather profound transformation lies in the collection of servers we have running the world. When I started, we had seven physical servers: four running individual modules, one running the database, one running the forums and one spare that eventually became used as the quest server. At the time we also had a pretty sweet deal for hosting them at a pretty major data center. That situation changed, however, and hosting costs shot through the roof and to a point where it was unrealistic for us to continue on with that configuration, so we had to make changes. Fast-forward to today, we have only two servers: one running the actual game across two modules and one for the forums.

Over the years we have asked for and welcomed donations to help with the server costs. We cannot require people to pay to play here, as it would violate the terms of the EULA for NWN. We also cannot offer in-game incentives and other game-related monetizations for the same reasons. For the most part, this has been acceptable for us, because running Layonara on NWN has never been about making money.

We have, unfortunately, hit something of a crucial financial point that requires attention. The two servers we have cost us an average of $268 CAD each month (NOTE: this is about the same in USD given current exchange rates). To break that down a little, the game server costs about $118/month and the forums server costs about $150/month. This cost is presently split by three of us, and but there has been a change for one who can no longer continue to contribute his share as he has been. This was hinted about in a recent devlog entry. In essence, we are in a situation where we either need to start bringing in regular donations from the community to make up for our shortfall or make some hard choices about the fate of Layonara on NWN. So in this context, we essentially have one question for this community:

Do you want to see NWN Layonara continue?

Our web site will remain; that is a cost we can and will continue to shoulder. Layonara as a whole is not going anywhere, and in fact, we have more than a few plans being set into motion. Whether or not the NWN game server will continue, however, will depend on the community's interest and the community's ability to donate regularly and sufficiently to keep the servers running. To be clear, we are not asking for a lot from individuals. If each member of our active player base could chip in even $5 or $10 USD each month, it would make a significant difference and allow us to continue on with relative ease.

Starting very soon, we're going to start holding some regular donation drives, though we would also welcome anyone who wants to regularly donate to the server fund. Clearly, we would welcome and encourage both. Any overages would, of course, be applied to future fees.

Ideally, community contributions and donations would fully fund the NWN server (approx. $118/month). If we could even get $100/month from community donations, it would eliminate the short-fall that will occur. This sounds like a lot for a single person, but when divided several ways, it's really not that much.

To potentially help with your decision, before this financial news came to light, we have been working on several initiatives for the game world. The Fortune system is the first of them, but also we have GMs planning some new efforts and collaborations. Leanthar and EdTheKet are working on putting together some new and (hopefully) exciting things. We have several things in motion right now, but if there is insufficient interest in the community for such things...or if there is just an insufficient ability or desire for you all as a group to contribute a small amount each month to keep the servers running...then there is little justification to continue on with NWN.

At the risk of sounding gloomy or dramatic, the sad truth is that the NWN server's fate will likely be decided by the end of the year if we do not gain enough in the way of donations before then. There's really no way to sugar-coat this, so I won't try. It's no longer a request; we cannot continue to support both servers without the assistance of the community.

So the choice is truly in your hands. We wish we didn't have to reduce this down to a matter of money, but unfortunately wishes won't keep the lights on, as the saying goes.

As this has all come to light somewhat recently, we do not yet have a resource set up to handle donations (please do not use the old links; these may be changing), but we anticipate having something very soon. We're just trying to figure out which of several possibilities will work out the best in terms of fees and overhead. For now, feel free to discuss and ask questions about this. We'll answer what we can.

-- Dorganath (on behalf of the entire Layonara team)
