Layonara Server / A note on world changing/altering quests
« on: February 06, 2010, 05:08:58 pm »
During one of the recent GM interviews a candidate wondered if all GMs were allowed to run world changing/altering quests.
This because he had heard that this was not true and that only a few can do this.

This is not correct. Any GM can run a world changing/altering quest. However, first they must want to do this themselves. If they don't want to run that kind of quest, that's perfectly fine.

Once they decide they can and want to run these types of quests, be it WLDQs, Main Plot Quests or series like Essrantor's Veil for example, they need to check their idea with me first.
I've got many pages of unreleased lore that they can then use, as well as several loose story arcs that still need running and could be incorporated into the the idea that the GM in question has. Or in case the GM has no ideas yet (usually not the case :) ) we can use these and brainstorm.

In addition, I've got a thread in the GM forums with about 6 quest series (with about a one sentence summary per series) that a GM can pick up and develop him/herself. Each of these series must have two or more alternate endings pre-defined before the series can start. These endings by the way, may not necessarily be good endings (e.g. Dark Ages!).

So it is entirely up to the GM to take the first step and wanting to run these kinds of things.

I just thought to clarify this to the community as a whole.

Due to a recent request in the Corath forums, we re-discussed the opening up of the Unholy Champion PrC for player characters.

The Unholy Champions of Corath and Pyrtechon have an alignment requirement of CE, making them effectively unavailable for players.
This requirements is not coded.

Therefore, we decided that the Unholy Champion of Corath PrC and the Unholy Champin of Pyrtechon PrC can also be taken by characters of NE alignment (who meet all the other prerequisites of course).

In addition, followers of Baraeon Ca'Duz will also be allowed to take the Unholy Champion of Corath PrC, this because Baraeon followers use the short sword, just like Corathites do. We will not create a separate PrC package for these Baraeon Ca'duz champions, but while they take the Unholy Champion of Corath PrC they would be Unholy Champions of Baraeon Ca'duz.

- Taking these PrCs requires the same difficulty/character submission approval process as the Champion PrC (i.e. one or more CDQs).
- There can be more than one per deity (just like for Champions)
- If your char hasn't got the NE alignment yet, you would first need a CDQ to reach NE before you can go down the road to the Unholy Champion CDQ(s)

If there are any other questions, please post here.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Lower all HP, AC and AB's for creatures
« on: December 11, 2009, 11:38:48 pm »
I want to be able to solo more with my fighter, but the creatures have too many HP, AC and too large of an AB to make it possible.  Can we add some CR-30+ things that fighters can get as much XP and loot for like mages, bards, and clerics can by themselves?  It's only fair.  Also, we may be able to just make the damage on weapons incredibly better based on pure fighter, barbarian, and weapon master levels so that melee classes have a chance to do things on their own -- that way the extra weapon damage will not apply to cleric or paladin levels.

As an alternative, we can also raise the magic immunity or saves of all creatures and justify it with natural selection and breeding due to overkilling the species by magic users.

... Signs start appearing around an old tower in the Dapplegreen forest warning people to stay away at penalty of death.

An old looking skeleton hangs from a tree warning people of their fate if they ignore the warnings.

... Shadier looking bandits start appearing in the vicinity and caravans begin to be attacked with greater frequency and with excess violence and mayhem.

... Travelers are warned to avoid the area.

General Discussion / Balance caster/none caster
« on: November 20, 2009, 08:56:48 am »
Caster vs none caster, this is my view of balance between casters and none casters on Layonara, let me start of by saying that I don't think you can ever make them even in regards to soloing. Why? From the simple fact that soloing=crowd control.
This is the casters tools for it LORE: Encyclopedia of Spells and this the melee's tool LORE: Knockdown

that is of course rather bluntly put. Yes I left out devastating critical, from the simple fact that there isn't a player that has achieved the feat yet, secondly you can't get the feat till level 28 as a half-orc and 32 for races with a starting strength of max 18 in short meaning your utterly depend on caster or quests from 15ish and up. Going for quest then you likely won't make it in the nwn version, if you're lucky enough to travel with a caster regularly then it won't matter, you're character have access to the wards needed to survive
Some time ago (V3 I think) there was a much needed revamp of the spells in layonara, in general making the evocation school useful on epic levels again, and thereby making it possible for casters (mostly arcane casters) to be useful in a group without the use of instant death magic. I think it's time the same happened to the none-casters. The trick is.. how to do it with the least amount of work? Because let's face it, the team already got their hands full with the mmo. :D

So I put on my thinking cap, rework all spawns making them smaller as suggest hmm sure but would in my opinion make the world a boring place when you're in a group, and it sounds like a huge work load as well.
Even if I do agree that the mob spawns is the number one reasons none casters can't solo (or travel in groups without a caster). I'll give an example Angela my level 40 melee has a ac of 51 unbuffed and deals out hmm around 14d6+ enchantments and strength etc (when sneak attacking). so clearly one on one she can hold her own, against a mob.. no way. I can't even take her into the first area in the deep, dark elves and spiders at around CR 20, and that is even though I can raise her AC to 60ish put up a shadow shield to get 50% miss chance and immunity to necromantic spells and death magic as well as mind immunity (gear) and an improved evasion reflex save on 50+ all in all making her completely immune to their damage spells. The fact is that the 10 dark elf rogues will surround her and with 7 attacks per around from duel wield will roll enough 20ish to kill her. Not only that but the time and the items (scrolls, scales) is making the risk/cost vs. reward to great.

I don't want to see casters nerfed, the changes to the Screechings in the Great Forest was a good start, the amount of spells a caster has to use balance out the risk/cost vs. reward (In my opinion) but is only dealing with half of the problem, it balance out the spawns for the casters not the none caster. But if none-casters should be able to travel around without a caster (In my opinion they should be able to but leaving the decision in the hands of the team as I'm not the one that will have to dedicate the hours into it, that is needed) then there are really only two choices

1: redo all spawns made for level 17 and above
2: change items to reduce the difference between a buffed and unbuffed character.

The problem is that the current spawns on Layonara are all build for groups with a caster in them. Meaning a spawn build for level 20 is build assuming your none-caster have a +4 weapon, buffs on stats, immunities to mind spells and death wards (due to the lack of clerics, healing potions and so were made more potent reducing the need to travel with a cleric)
Since there already is items' adding to stats, granting immunities etc, then the logical step would be to up weapon and armors something like this.

Weapons (meaning melee range, gloves or whatever a none caster uses)
+0 raised to +1
+1 raised to +2
+2 raised to +4
+3 raised to +6

Armors (same here all types of armor)
+0 raised to +1
+1 raised to +2
+2 raised to +4
+3 raised to +6

This in effect completely removes the need for gwm/mv and makes the gear follow the curve that layonara's critters are assuming you have,  since we haven't touched stats or immunities then a spawn is still going to be at the very least a huge challenge to any none caster.  Now, for the people arguing that this won't make the problem of soloing better. Then you're completely right, on the other hand that is not what I'm trying to do, I'm trying to put balance between casters and none caster in regard to how the spawns are now on Layonara. Doing these changes will in my opinion give none-casters a fighting chance to do the same as casters can, Solo in a way where risk/cost is balance out with the reward or travel in a group without the need of a caster to ward them.
So for me balance comes down to this:
Should a player be able to solo?

if the balance between risk/cost vs. reward is fair yes

Should all classes at the very least have a fighting chance to do it then?

YES YES YES! Imo Layo's problem isn't that a caster can solo it's that a none caster can't

If your answer instead is no, players shouldn't be able to solo at all:

Added a few creatures to every spawn, give them 50+ in all saves, true sight, perm haste, immunity to mind spells and 1000+ hp. That will add a creatures your caster can't kill with spells but a buffed up melee can with the cost of a lot of healing

Another option is to do a complete remake of every single spawn, making them in a way that a none caster can deal with, but that will also mean you need to reduce their number or people who can group with a caster is going to fly though the xp chart at the speed of light.

In my opinion the best choice is to up gear as suggest in my post so it reflect the spawns as they are already build, it would also mean that your crafter no longer feels frustrated over the xxxxx hours he/she used perfecting a craft are in a mechanical sense useless since your fighter is better of getting a bronze weapon and have a gmw cast on it. It will push the balance between a caster and a none-caster closer to equal (casters would still hold the advantage)
Of course.. all this is assuming that the team have the time to make these changes :)
Feel free to comment, I'm looking forward to hearing it

Layonara Server / Version 3.21.5 is online
« on: November 12, 2009, 08:54:10 pm »
Version 3.21.5 is online!

This is a small one, consisting mostly of area-related updates, but worth putting in.
  • Remodel to 237 Haft Lake District
  • Tweak Great Forest spawns a bit (Giants and Trollocs)
  • Adjustments to Natural Cavern for balance reasons
  • Temporary plot-relevant areas added to Central
  • Increased mithril spawns slightly
  • Fixed exploitable terrain in a high-level CNR area
  • Fixed broken transition in the Broken Halls
  • Fixed Temple of Vierdri'ira vendor to sell the right flag
  • Renamed the Unicorn Inn to the Jhemina Inn
  • Update Leringard to reflect the recent Arms fire
  • added command toggle combat_xp to toggle the gaining of XP from combat *
  • Skald Make Them Bleed ability should now properly cancel invisibility and Greater Sanctuary
  • Fixed order of dialog options in ox conversation
  • Added Chair - Decor deed to furniture vendor
  • Fixed Kit's reference to Ogres to say Gnolls instead
* toggle combat_xp can be used by those people who are waiting for CDQs for PrCs and other reasons and wish to halt their progression without having to ask GMs for XP removal during the waiting period.  Note that there is no accounting or tracking of XP that would have been gained when this setting is "off".  Use this at your own responsibility.  The GM Team will not hand back XP for inadvertent use.

There it is!  Thanks to those who supplied input to this, and also to Minerva for her plot areas.

Enjoy!

Rumour Has It / Leringard Arms Destroyed!
« on: November 08, 2009, 07:14:50 pm »
Rumors abound out of Leringard! The well known inn and tavern, the Leringard Arms, and its adjacent card emporium, were completely destroyed in a fire. The building is considered too damaged and structurally unsound to be accessed at this time and the charred structure that remains after the devastating fire has been completely closed to the public.

Thus far it is known that there were some casualties in the fire and that more than one person died from inhaling smoke, though the number and identity of those lost remains unknown at this time. Many of the patrons of the inn were treated for burns.

Plans for rebuilding are unknown at this time. One bystander judged that it was likely the entire structure remaining would have to be completely torn down, and things started fresh.

Thankfully, the fire did not spread to the entire city block, and only a few adjacent homes and structures were burned in the blaze, which was quickly doused by an unseasonably heavy rainshower. A cleric of Mist were seen near the inn shortly after the heavy rains started, but when asked whether he had brought the rains he simply shrugged. Another priestess of the faith claimed that the storm had already been on its way. Whether luck or action from the Misties, all agree the rains and limited damage are good fortune.

Just for Fun / Praise for Dorg
« on: November 06, 2009, 07:49:37 pm »
Dorganath, our friendly administrator, can always be found
hard at work in these forums. Dorg works independently, without
wasting valuable time resorting to pettiness. Dorg never
thinks twice about assisting fellow forum members, and he always
finishes given projects on time. Often he takes extended
measures to complete his promises, sometimes skipping healthy
breaks. Dorg is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no
vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound
knowledge in his field. I firmly believe that Dorg can be
classed as a high-calibre contributor, the type that cannot be
dispensed with. Consequently, I truly recommend that Dorg be
promoted to Supreme Leader of Layonara, and a proposal will be
executed as soon as possible.

The Silver Buckle / Political wrangling across Dregar
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:33:22 pm »
The Sabre, recognised ruler of Liwich has come forward and made an amazing announcement that has been supported completely by the Regnant of Hurm, Saviar Morgensen and over the last few hours by all authorities across Liwich.

By order of The Sabre, Liwich has offered the criminal Gork a FULL pardon for all crimes and accusations made against him by lawful authorities across the world and free access to any and all places within Liwich itself.

The Sabre met briefly with ambassadors from Boyer, Sederra and Succession as well as with Rofireinite representatives in Liwich Castle. Rumour has it that the ambassadors were not happy when they left and in fact were extremely terse and unwilling to make any comments on what transpired within.

Following the Sabres announcement the ambassadors one by one declared that regardless of Liwich's offer to the criminal Gork who, if the Rofireinites are to believe, is dead anyway, their nations will still have in place a bounty and considerable restrictions in relation to the criminal. Each of the Ambassadors has cited the fact that Liwich has no authority to recant their own nations laws and charges.

In perhaps the most sensational news that has angered the Ambassadors further is that the Rofireinite representatives in Liwich have, with some reluctance, granted The Sabres request to drop all charges to date against the criminal Gork.

In the face of such a strange decision the ambassadors of Boyer, Succession and Sederra have angrily upheld their own countries laws and declared that should Gork, in the unlikely event, rise from his grave and be found within any of their borders he will be summarily executed without trial.

The Ambassador from Rael has refused to make any comment.

Many political observers feel that the increasing tension across Dreger in relation to the hunt for Gork was simply a precurser to an attempt to instill chaos and civil war across Dreger with the intention of providing Lord Rael an opportunity and reason to march his armies north to pacify his neighbours and instill his rule across all of Dreger. While this has no supporting evidence to date there are some whispering in corners that this is perhaps the true nature of what had been occuring. How the criminal Gork was involved remains a mystery but it certainly seems that he has the full support of Liwich at least.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Deities and Classes Suggestion
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:26:33 pm »
After the Sacred Fist discussion, it became apparent that this is not the first time by a long shot that a class has been denied to a specific deity.  While I am not a fan of that, in the spirit of someone else not being stuck with a character they can't progress as they had wished, I suggest a simple "Deity/Class" chart along the same lines of the deity relations chart.

Use the Deity Relation template and replace the deities on the X axis with the classes, denoting which can have what.  This chart could then be posted ahead of the classes section of LORE and would prevent any further unhappiness by spelling out the restrictions.

For example: Az'atta: No classes with more than X% "fighting" feats (fighter, barbarian, battlerager, duelist, assassin, dwarven defender, spellsword, arcane archer, weapon master, monk, sacred fist)

Vorax: No classes with more than X% "casting" feats with bard, cleric and sacred fist the exceptions (sorcerer, driud, wizard, spellsword).

Etc.

Layonara is a mature game, with a population who have been with it for years.  With alts being important to keeping things fresh, this won't be the last time there will be a class/deity conflict.

I am happy to make up the chart if requested.

** Characters with the Cloak of the Bat can ask a GM directly in-game for a replacement with the Nighteyes Cloak.  Please do not clog the Grievance/Request process with these. This is an item-for-item swap.

Thanks go to orth, Script Wrecked and Acacea for their contributions, as well as Alatriel for her remodel work.

Please note that this does require an updated HAK file, which can be downloaded here.

Enjoy!

Layonara Server / New Realm Summaries
« on: August 16, 2009, 04:37:05 am »
Hi all,

Just like with the deity summaries, we'll also start posting summaries of the various realms.

Not all have been written up yet, but those that have been are being summarized (thanks again to the volunteers) and will be put on LORE in the near future.

Stay tuned!
