Rumour Has It / Mariner's Hold Voted Best Well Water in the Realms!
« on: July 12, 2012, 12:10:57 am »
In a world where aquifers grow mold and mad alchemists poison well with reckless abandon, it is good news to hear that Mariner's Hold tops the world in drinkable well water.  Residents attest that as of late the well water of this fair city has improved tenfold with an extra sparkle and zing to the taste.  Many gnomes claim this to be a result of mineral deposits within the aquifers, while Councilman Grue applauds the efforts of the local Aqueduct Maintenance Task Force (AMTF) for their vigilance and duty. Some residents have even claimed restorative powers while alchemists flock to the area to fill their tonics with this most splendid drink.  So said the local farmer Quintus Ogden, "My bunions, it done cured by bunions.  I swears it.  Two bottles a day keep your bunions at bay!"

In other news, Azattan and Aeridenite protestors clash with townguards today, debating the conditions of the local "Sanitarium", the criminal rehabillitation project put together by the local council.  Activists declare the ediface to be a "Tower of Torment" and residents living nearby complain of being kept up at night from strange screams from the building, located in the outskirts.  All messengers sent to the Sanitarium have yet to report back, and adventurers sent to investigate have been nonresponsive.  Overzealous protestor miiitant groups are suspected.

The Seas to the north of Hurm are abuzz today with reports of "Sea Monsters" and "Sailors turned to fishlords" today, according to many mariners interviewed.  "I saw it, the eyes of Evil.  Peered into the depths I did, the maelstrom came in a wave of tentacles.  My mind burned as it roared, me mateys dragged below the sea."  and "The eyes, the hate filled eyes...".  These poor men, rescued from floating debris my merchant ships are under close observation.  Enchantment is suspected, and foul play.

A Ship of the Line of the Prantz Armada has gone missing this month, somewhere in the vicinity of Lost Pirate territory.  Prantz officials are offering a 5000 true reward for any information that may prove useful in the safe return the lost ship and its crew.  Captain Slate of the Prantz Armada is a decorated figure for his efforts in pirate hunting in the deep seas, well beyond the safe territory sailed by most merchant vessels.  Says one merchant of the House of Gromor, "That man is a hero.  The lengths he has gone to keeping our routes open put money in my pocket and food in my childrens' bellies."

General Discussion / High Tides Postponed!!!
« on: June 20, 2012, 06:25:31 pm »
So sorry folks!  Tried logging in today after work and something seems royally off with my texture files.  My bottom row is blank with white boxes, and long stretches of the tilesets are blotted out gray or black, with very heavy chopping.  I tried reinstalling all of added hak content and rolling back my video card drivers, but to no avail.  Going to have to re-install the whole game.  We all know how long that takes...  So it seems I must postpone tonight's session.  Again my apologies.  Once I get this fixed we'll reschudeul for the earliest time possible.  Been far too long since the last session!

Just for Fun / Influences for the past few quests!
« on: June 07, 2012, 01:10:30 am »
Howdy Folks!  As you may have noticed, the past few quests have been heavily influenced by HP Lovecraft.  If any of you have heard that name or that of Cthulu, definitely pick up a copy of ANYTHING he has ever written and read read read!   Of course we do not have Cthulu in Layonara, but we do still have Aberrations!  Between Mind Flayers, Aboleth and Beholders, Lovecraft lives on, influencing generations of Fantasy afficiandos and gamers alike.

The aboleth in particular are never given enough credit IMO for the sheer depths of horror and transmutative natural perversion that they spread, dragging sailors down below to be brainwashed and mutated into scaley humanoid horrors to carry out the tentacle lords' work on coastal lands and ships.  As you look into the waves, crags become waves, reefs become wind and sandbars seem traversable as open sea.  Then you run aground, shipwreck, and are hounded by mutants and tentacles dragging you down below to become food for the masters.  Or worse yet, their future aquatic foot soldiers, icky stuff!

Mind Flayers, or Illithid, go as far as to bear Cthulu's classic visage.  A slimey beast of the depths with a tentacled, lamprey mouth that sucks out your brain for sweet sustainance.  Their mind control powers rival that of the Aboleth, and their hierarchal structure is as alien as the Zerg.  Mother brains spawn these minnows which circle around in the tank eating brain matter offered from above.  Meanwhile, mother eats the minnow children too slow or witless to avoid her tentacles.  Only the strongest and most affluent minnow rise to the surface of the tank, to be taken by birthing thralls and implanted into slave skulls.  There, they feast upon the brains and control the host body like a puppet, until the minnow larva takes over the entire body and transmutes it into a united being.  This being will become the Mind flayers you see and fight in your journeys.  For further reading on this awesome and most under-used D&D classic monster, check out 2nd Edition's Slayer's Guide to Mind Flayers.  They even go into full detail into how they use the bodies of adventurers in their slave pits and gladitorial arenas.  (Imagine Battlebots with your defeated bodies as husks and your enthralled brains to eat the victory prize.)

And then the Beholders.  The beautiful thing about a beholder is his vast intellect partnered with his enchantment skills.  Legions of monsters and humanoids serve them as witless thralls, you face a hundred "beef and potato" critters like bandits, orcs or critters before you find out BEHOLDERS are behind it all.  Entire merchant guilds bends to their whispers at night.  And that one central eye, larger than the rest?  Poof, there goes your stoneskin, barkskin, strength and death ward.  Although they are the pinnacle of magical beings (after dragons), some even gouge out their own central eye just to learn magic.  Their vast intellects allow them to excell in the craft, combining the 8 other rays of doom with a full spellbook of tricks at their disposal.  Most powerful ones also see true. (sorry shadowdancers!)  There is also an excellent Slayer's guide out there detailing this race of monsters.  Apparantly they float like a dirigable, from an air bladder of lighter-than-air gas.  This is how they fly in no-magic zones. (and in the view of their no-magic cones!)

All three of these beasts have exceptional mind-enthralling powers.  People driven either mad and frothing or quite and complacent into servitude.  The good puppets often blend into society, nobody the wiser.  They rule guilds, head houes or just blend in with the populace as eyes and ears.  The bad ones are injested as food, or implanted as husks to use as puppets for the young.  Topside? In the deep? Beneath the Briney Depths?  You will come to face one and find yourself locked into a fantasy world of your pitiful adventurer's ego against a mind tyrant.  No secret is safe, no thought is sacred.  What IS Real?!  They will use your own childhood against you.  This is why I LOVE them!

Those who paid attention to the rants and ravings of the mad cultists and the scaled guardians also may have noticed another influence.  Dethklok - Go Into The Water [FULL VIDEO CLIP] - YouTube  I shall attempt to invoke the spirit of metal in all of my quests.  Tonight, love was in the Eye of the Beholder.  Hope you had fun, in any case!

Now back to pirate goodness!

Rumour Has It / For the Stranded...
« on: May 31, 2012, 12:29:38 am »
Your nightmares grow every night you spend on this island.  You dream of sailing.  Across the ocean you travel.  You gaze upon the stars above, peacefully.  And then the ship beneath you pitches.  Young men and sailors pitch overboard as tentacles rise from the depths.  Seizing those they drag below, you watch them drown and become dead.  And then their eyes open with green light.  Calling out to your ship's mates, allies and friends, you are haunted with dead, drowned faces with eyes of green light.  You feel yourself drowning, grasp your throat and you are awakened.  Your ally stands above you, knowing in their eyes the same dream.  The most terrifying aspect of these nightmares are that you all share the same dream.

You grow to despise this island, and pray every night you may soon leave it.  Even in the waking hours you find yourselves with throbbing headaches and snappish towards one another.  Something in the darkness calls.

My apologies for my questers!  I had some family issude that needed attending to following a death in the family.  Had to run off for a bit since that and work were getting hectic.  After much soul-searching and alone time, mostly via rum, X3, Risen 2 and other vices, feeling back up to running quests again and playing more in game.  I will be at a big barbecue this weekend with friends and getting a haircut for a job search (dont worry, still employed, just looking to upgrade), but I should be back intot he flow of things this upcoming week.  I intend on running the next installment of The Razorback Syndicate within the next week, 2 tops.

ALSO!  I noticed that I've been neglecting my CDQ queue quite a bit and for that I apologize!  I noticed that they kept getting buried in PMs and tells, so I looked online and noticed that I never set up my CDQ request page propr! (tsk tsk Brew!)  I have 3 in the queue now and have detailed what I need from you guys to send me to get these started.  Please comment in the linked forum attachment so that I can address what your goals are, what you're looking for in a quest and I shall try to run at least one every other week.  Here's the link to that!

Rumour Has It / Mariner's Hold Breathes a little easier!
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:00:21 am »
Thanks to the efforts of some new temporary recruits to the town guard, the streets are a little bit safer.  Produce Hawkers, Fishmongers and Potato Specialists sigh in relief as they are no longer being extorted by the violent corrupt guardsmen apprehended in their region. The brutish thug Hector and his lackeys Cara and Barnes have been immediately suspended from their posts and are pending interrogation in the city dungeons for extortion, assault, tax fraud, theft and attemepted murder.  The strongest of charges have been levied against Hector himself, and to the other two, conspiracy to commit similar charges, resisting arrest and purgery.  Citizen Greg is charged with assaulting an officer, though leniency is expected as the officer in question was openly harassing him over a pitchfork which he had a farmer's license to carry, and was already being assaulted by said guard, Hector.  Hector further faces charges in the attempted murder of said Gregory, and is suspected to have murdered numerous other witnesses against him and obstructing justice in interfering with the testimony of others.  Such capital crimes will no doubt carry the death penalty or at the most lenient, surgical pacification.

In the docks area, a smuggling ring of child slavery was thwarted and arrests made of the accomplices First Mate Kirk and Sailor Buster of the slave ship Chum Runner.  Although slavery of some persons is legal in Mariner's Hold, these villains were found to be taking children and free citizens who were kidnapped from the streets, a clear violation of the concords governing this trade.  Already they are being held for questioning, and leads are being followed in the suspects Omar the enchanter and Captain Duncan Blackwater both of whom have unfortunately evaded arrest.

The Enchanter Mage, "Omar" is witnessed to have obstructed justice in using magic to enchant a customs official, teleporting away to locations unknown before facing justice.  He is also implicated in the kidnapping of free citizens to be sold as slaves, and using his talents to evade the inspection of his ill-gotten goods, as well as proper duties to be paid.

Duncan Blackwater is said to be the captain of the slave ship Chum Runner, and gathering military forces for a home base near the coast of Hurm.  He is known as the son of former Councilwoman Edna Blackheart, having fled Mariner's Hold since her incarceration. His striking likeness to former Councilman Arelius Witherspoon is noted as being possibly more than a passing coincidence, though he has made public threats to end the old man's life despite their possible relation.  He is said to be a master swordsman with many men under his command, armed and incredibly dangerous, mentally unstable and cruel to a point.

Execute extreme caution if pursuing either of these suspects!

This also brings us to a warning to all citizens of the civilized world of a new menace to our safety, a criminal organization known as the "Razorback Syndicate".  Reports indicate that this group operates in the shadows of many cities and is responsible for the coercion of many noble houses to engage in unlawful acts anywhere from the illicit to the outright violent.  They operate in a "Divide and Conquer" manner, pitting powers against one another in order to decimate the other and then preying upon the victor in their weakened state.  Their top agents can be identified by the boar's head signet rings that they hold on their persons for identification, though countless other agents no doubt use more insidious means to indentify themselves to others.

None can determine their true goals, whether it be for power and wealth or the mere Corath-like propagation of chaos, madness and political instability.  They have been at large in Mariner's Hold, using former house Blackheart and its commercial interests to both mask and bankroll their operations.  Edna is an admitted member of this group and is currently being interrogated with utmost severity within the dungeons of Mariner's Hold.  Agents of the Razorback Syndicate have also been found to be involved in political instability in Leringard, pitting houses Grainger and Vaeelenara into a feud with one another, as well as in the brothels of Kartharian where they were found to be using vampires and alchemy to propagate illicit vice and necromancy upon the unsuspecting public.  In both instances, the gnomish mastermind Lucien Krale was found to be involved, alongside his orc-blooded enforcer, Bork.

It has been a long time coming since the evidence of these events has been linked and made public knowledge, but I feel that it is high time that the secrecy behind this organization ends and that they be exposed to the world at large.  Noble families, be warned against working with their ilk.  Whatever short-sighted gains you with to attain will be inevitably betrayed by their inherent lust for power.  And to all members of the Razorback Syndicate, whether it be lurking within Mariner's Hold, Hurm, Leringard, Kartharian or Beyond... Know this.  We will not rest until we, the free and civilized peoples of the world see your foul mechanations ended, until every last scheme and member of your number is exposed and purged from the face of the world.  You cannot hide from us, you cannot run and you cannot win.  Know that you days are numbered and that we will not rest until you lay low, writhing in the deepest dungeons until the inevitable extinction of your ilk.  Surrender now or be eradicated.

Roleplaying / Cleaning the Streets: Code of Conduct
« on: April 04, 2012, 04:44:46 pm »
For use in this quest, here is a reference of some bullet points regarding the code of conduct for the townguard's training.  This will be covered in the handbooks given to you by Councilman Grue.

Guard Code of Conduct

-Entrapment: It is NOT entrapment to lay a trap for a criminal already pre-disposed to breaking the law, while it is when using methods of coercion to do so.  Examples: Offering to sell contraband to somebody who accepts and arresting them is NOT entrapment.  Telling them that you'll kill their loved ones if they don't comply certainly IS.

-Breaking the Law: No laws shall be broken without first clearing immunity with superiors or property owners.  If one wanted to entrap a vandal, they may perform acts of vandalism themselves only if the owner of the property consents to the defilement of his property.

-Torture of individuals: Torture must be conducted in the city dungeons by a registered dungeon-keeper only.  The only exception is in times of immediate peril endangering the life of an innocent.  The immediate danger must be obvious to all, such as a burning house with people trapped inside or an active hostage situation.  Torture in order to find out who is a spy or who is harboring a criminal is not... unless the proper paperwork is filed and the subject is detained in the dungeons proper.

-Taxes, Tolls & Duties:
Tolls: Tolls may be collected by any member of the guard so witnessing transport of the subject across lawful toll roads, bridges, gates, ports and waterways.  They may not be gathered for entrance to private buildings or public areas designated as free zones. (parks, main streets, taverns, marketplaces)

Duties: Duties must be collected on site in Ports, Harbors, Gates, Warehouses and Markets.  This is to be done immediately following proper inspection of all goods in transport.  Upon payment of duties a receipt is to be issued.  Duties may be collected only by licensed collectors bearing a silver badge or higher.

Taxes: Taxes are gathered quarterly by gold badged guards or official tax clerks of the city only.  These may be collected at the estates or businesses of the subject or paid forward in the courts or the local branches of the Bank of Layonara.

Fines are to be paid to the courts only as to fully document all restitution.  Fines must be issued via tickets and receipts will be issued upon payment.  All guards copper or above may issue fines, only gold may collect.

(hopefully this helps to determine when the guards you encounter are legitimate or acting outside their roles, as well as to keep yourselves out of prison)

Rumour Has It / Councilwoman Edna Blackheart deposed!
« on: February 16, 2012, 12:14:56 am »
Here ye, here ye!

By order of his excellence Head Councilman Mattias Grue and confirmed unanimously by all members of the City Council of Mariner's Hold, Lady Edna Blackwater (or rather, Alice Straum!) has hereby been placed under arrest, stripped of all her lands and titles and is serving life without possibility of parole in the city dungeons.  Internal investigations are underway to find any link to the Lady's finances and members of the city guard, suspect for dereliction of duty and bribery.  It is unfortunate that Barrister Herschel will not face trial, though his end was just and fitting.

The bugbear drummer Torgo is awarded the Mariner's Star for bravery and heroism, saving a child from a blast of fire felt in the council's chambers.  He and his band the Wayward Wildside Trio are permitted passage to and from the Silver Buckle Inn under protection of the guard for the duration of their stay. They are to be under the watchful eye of the guard at all times for their own protection and to maintain order within the city.

Any who have knowledge of a hooded courier cloaked in black and purple robes seen leaving the council chambers at the time of the hearing are urged to come forward with any and all pertinent information.  This goes doubly so for those with evidence of bribery and corruption within the city guard and involving all activities of the bandits in the outskirts of town.  They are involved in a conspiracy to commit murder, assassination and high reason.  Any harboring of these criminals will not be tolerated by the lawful powers of this fine city. Lenience and mercy under the law will be granted to those cooperative with our investigations.  Already one such bandit has reduced her charges down to conspiracy and theft, to serve a sentence of no more than 5 years. Normally banditry is punishable by death, so know that the mercy of the courts is exemplary for those who would change their spots for the greater good.

Furthermore, three buffoons are to be held in the stocks indefinitely outside the Silverbuckle Inn.  Let their punishment serve as an example to those who would be responsible for vandalism, public mischief and contempt of the courts.  By order of the council, neither the tavern nor its occupants of performers be harrassed in any way by the people of this City.

-Head Councilman, Mattias Grue

*extra guards are stationed around the establishment, these ones seeming to be new hires.  Periodically, many former members of the guard are arrested on charges of conspiracy and high treason and removed from their posts to serve their sentences.  And so the investigations continue...*

Opening Acts by Acoustic/Comedy duo - Crocket & Stubbs, Brech Country Jamboree!

Come, drink!  Be merry!  And be certain to tip plentifully!

*party goers and revelers flock to the bar in the week to come.  A strange, excitable man mills about, looking for autographs of bards and adventurers gathered.  Town guards scratch their heads enforcing noise ordinances and public drunkenness laws, while under strangely specific laws to escort the odd trio in and out of the town as needed and not to interfere with their performances.  The band is kept under constant surveillance while conservative influences within the town call for the show's cancellation. Word spreads of threatening letters being sent to the trio's dressing room...*

//quest to follow!  Let me know when you Silverbuckle Folks (and anybody else interested in seeing monstrous folks find their muse) are good to meet soon after Thanksgiving weekend, and we'll delve into the tales of this trio. ;)
