General Discussion / Completion of House Drawing
« on: January 17, 2009, 08:39:01 pm »
Hi everyone,

Things are mostly okay, at least with me, thanks for those who had concern. I had a friend pop by who needed my full attention regarding some personal issues.

I have several more prizes to give away and I need to change the ownership of the house to Tabris, I'll get to that as soon as I catch my breath a bit.  I may have to continue the rest of the draw tomorrow though, I'm not really in the mood to be Plen right now.

I'll keep you up to date,
orth

General Discussion / A Sailors Christmas
« on: December 24, 2008, 11:46:30 pm »
Merry Christmas to those who are home and abroad, who serve and keep our land free. Merry Christmas to the service members who serve on ships, boats or serve on land you're in our hearts and prayers.

A Sailor's Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, the ship was out steaming, Sailors stood watch while others were dreaming.

They lived in a crowd with racks tight and small, In a 80-man berthing, cramped one and all.

I had come down the stack with presents to give, And to see inside just who might perhaps live.

I looked all about, a strange sight did I see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stockings were hung, shined boots close at hand, On the bulkhead hung pictures of a far distant land.

They had medals and badges and awards of all kind, And a sober thought came into my mind.

For this place was different, so dark and so dreary, I had found the house of a Sailor, once I saw clearly.

A sailor lay sleeping, silent and alone, Curled up in a rack and dreaming of home. The face was so gentle, the room squared away, This was the United States Sailor today. This was the hero I saw on TV, Defending our country so we could be free.

I realized the families that I would visit this night, Owed their lives to these Sailors lay willing to fight.

Soon round the world, the children would play, And grownups would celebrate on Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each day of the year, Because of the
Sailor, like the one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve on a sea, far from home.

The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The Sailor awakened and I heard a calm voice, "Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice."

"Defending the seas all days of the year, So others may live and be free with no fear."

I thought for a moment, what a difficult road, To live a life guided by honor and code.

After all it's Christmas Eve and the ship's underway! But freedom isn't free and it's sailors who pay.

The Sailor say's to our country "be free and sleep tight, No harm will
come, not on my watch and not on this night."

The Sailor rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours, so silent, so still, I watched as the Sailor shivered from the night's cold chill.

I didn't want to leave on that cold dark night, This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

The Sailor rolled over and with a voice strong and sure, Commanded, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas, and All is Secure!"

HONOR,
COURAGE AND COMMITMENT

General Discussion / The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:36:39 am »
I'm introducing a new series for the rest of this month and the next month (and maybe longer) that highlights the dungeons of Layo, and especially the new content. Primarily, the purpose for the series is to allow for those that have yet been unable or simply won't be able to explore the various dungeons/adventure areas due to time constraints, since many of the dungeon areas require a significant time committment to visit.

This series is.....

.... regular adventuring but with added GM spice/help/porting in and out.
.... an effort to give our casual/family gamers who have a hard time committing five+ hours to adventuring a peek at what's out there to be explored.
.... an effort to help people develop new adventuring groups as well as play with their current one.
.... an effort to help new players become familiar with the world and with older players.
.... an effort to allow for slower and more directed, meaningful exploration, without the feeling that "if we don't rush through these areas, this will take ten hours instead of five."

This series is not.....

.... a set of conventional quests with plots and stories.
.... a way to gather CNR.

The format goes like this:

1) Name the area we'll visit and a starting location. Most locations will require multiple sessions, so often the session will end and start within the dungeon. Therefore, the primary duty of the GM is to port folks in and out for these short sessions.
2) Give level req's (I'll aim for high, mid, and low levels areas).
3) Each session runs for two hours, two and a half max.
4) No XP will be offered, save for maybe 500xp RP bonks. The payoff is the exploration and monster XP.
5) The party closes after it enters the dungeon. The party opens again when it's time to visit a new dungeon.
6) Gathering CNR during the trip is prohibited. However, dropped loot is kept and split by the party as usual. This doesn't mean that we can't go to places that have CNR, but gathering CNR is not the purpose. Exploration and PC interaction is the primary goal here.

The purpose of this thread, other than to explain the new series, is to allow for everyone to make requests on dungeons/areas people wish to explore. So, with that said, request away! You've got slightly less than a week to choose the first place to go.

Just for Fun / Inaugural Australian Layonaran BBQ
« on: December 05, 2008, 06:54:14 pm »
Inaugural Layonaran BBQ - South Eastern Australian Division

I can confirm the inaugural Layonaran Xmas BBQ was a success and saw the gathering of such luminaries as Pseudonym, Script Wrecked, Incahootz, Angelic, Hood!um, Dezza and Polak76.

The great divide between cyber and real life has been crossed with no casualties!

I can also confirm Script Wrecked really is a 2' 6" woman who rolls her 'R's, Polak turned up in black robes spouting Corathite rhetoric and Pseudonym was far more handsome than any of his posted photos might suggest.

General Discussion / To Harlas and the Main Plot Team
« on: November 22, 2008, 09:11:23 pm »
I've only been on three of these now, but I just wanted to say - it makes the server feel different and I really appreciate your efforts.  When you bring in a plot that has the authority to dictate world events, it really makes everybody's heads turn in the same direction.  And it's neat to have that community-wide direction.

Even if we end up killing each other.  O.o

Haven't felt like this in-game for a while.  Pretty neat stuff.  Thanks.

General Discussion / Happy Veteran's Day!!!
« on: November 11, 2008, 07:58:35 pm »
I have been in meetings all day but I wanted to make this post all day. I wanted to thank all of our members who have served in the armed forces here in layo for their time and duty to our country in the US.

A shout goes out to the wives and husbands of Veterans as well. You do a lot in the back ground for us during our time away from home. We love you and thank you, even if we don't say it enough.

General Discussion / World Announcement! *claps*
« on: October 29, 2008, 03:46:12 pm »
May I present to you an announcement that will shake the foundations of countries all over the globe:

"The coolest person ever was born on Friday the 24.th of October! I present to you, my newly born daughter - Tilde!"

This means that I will not be able to check the forums as often in the upcoming weeks. Nor will I be able to be present in-game a lot. I'll check my inbox as often as time allows it of course, but patience is a virtue.

Rumour Has It / Journey's End
« on: October 25, 2008, 10:11:01 am »
*Two forlorn figures lead a small cart to Folian's Temple in the depths of the Forst of Fog. Wordlessly, the older of the two figures, a lean man of middle years, takes from the cart the linen-wrapped body of his fallen friend and companion. Nearby, at the shoulder of the second figure, she a lithe younger woman who watches the scene through reddened eyes, a white-faced Belinaran monkey chitters and fidgets, distress and confusion written large in all-too-human expressions.

Moving slowly under the weight of his lifeless burden, the man approaches the High Priest of the Temple of the Longstrider. Carefully, gently, he lays the corpse to the sward at his feet.*

A fallen son of the Prince of Wolves.

*whispered*

Rest well nephew.

*With a nod towards his lady companion, the man quickly and quietly departs the temple to find the fallen's father and mother and tell them of life's greatest curse .. to outlive one's child.*

Rumour Has It / Goldwin Blacknight - Life of a Hero
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:43:46 pm »
It is with the greatest of sadness that I write this letter to inform all those who knew Goldwin Blacknight, of his passing. He died as he lived protecting the innocent and less fortunate. He died saving the life of a child. There can be no greater sacrifice given, than a life given to save another.

I write to tell you of his courageous spririt, of his giving heart. Of a friend who will be missed and never forgotten. He always offered to help where he could, and protect those he loved with a understanding that his life was lived for more than just the trivial possesions, but to help those who needed him to become better people.

I am one of those who became better for knowing him and I will never forget my treasured friend.

Goldwin Blacknight will be sorely missed, walk always in the light Goldwin Blacknight.

With a deep respect and fond friendship,
 ~Elohanna Dawnstar

Roleplaying / IC effecting OOC... and Vice Versa
« on: September 18, 2008, 03:34:08 am »
Some people support football ( or Soccer if I have to use it) or baseball.
Some collect stamps or stick little wodden ships in big glass bottles.
Others play Online Games.
With either of the above, you are bound to get some kind of emotional attachment to your chosen preference. I personally recall seeing my brother sob like a little girl when England failed to qualify for the European cup.
It's really not that much different here.

Some of us invest a lot of time in the character's we've created here, and as it is a Roleplay world, there's no telling what could happen to your creation when you log in. Some of it could be good, some of it could be bad.
Some of it will make us laugh... and yet some of it may... just may, make us curse.

Events ingame may occur against your character, or situations may arise you really did not want to but have no control over. Tensions may rise, and you may find yourself angry, agitated or annoyed.
That is fine. And it's to be expected considering what we put into some of our characters, or how things can occur ingame.

Some of the things Im hinting at are things like:

Deity relations - " I will not travel with this person. Leave now... or we will "make" you leave!"  ... at which point someone finds themselves kicked from a group.
Sure... it may have been RP'd fairly enough and had RP reasons to be done, but that doesn't stop the player who now finds himself alone from being mildly miffed about the whole situation.

PvP - This can vary. But often enough I've seen is when two characters dont mesh well and it comes to blows. RP'd is fine... but it usually results in said people no longer travelling with each other, refusing or being unable to join groups because their opponent is traveling in said group.
Again, fine reasons and good RP. But it still may result in one person being left out of a circle or group they were accustomed to traveling in, or once again, find themselves all alone.

Broken Relations - A change in the routine. Your IG partner may dump you... or people you used to travel and RP with frequently suddenly no longer seem to be around, or are busy doing other things. One thing with the above to remember is.... simply because you may be dating/married to a certain person Ingame, or have the most fun RPing with a certain person, does not mean you need to go to and be with that same person everytime they log in.

There are likely more I cant think of, but the above tend to leave Player's with negative feelings. That "can" be understandable and unavoidable, since RP is Roleplaying out the Good and Bad times of your Character's life.
But the important thing is to ensure that that same negativity doesn't affect you and flow back into the game.
If your angry because a certain RP situation caused X or Y to happen, caused that evil Corath to kill your character in less than two rounds, or because your InGame love ran off with the Tailor from Hempstead, and you know it's affected you, it's perhaps time to log-off, roll back your chair and remember this is a game.

We're all here to enjoy a game. If this game no longer becomes fun and annoys us... it's time to sit back and take a break, get some perspective.
And those spending their few spare hours coming here to enjoy this game, shouldn't need to deal with any form of negativity we push out because an InGame situation didn't go the way we wanted it to.

Hmm.... I've rambled quite a lot.
Basically, all I'm saying in my long-winded way is, dont let IC things effect your OOC mood... and thus let your OOC mood effect your IC mood... and so on and so forth.

Roleplaying / Playing Another Character's Class
« on: August 25, 2008, 02:36:22 am »
Please be aware (and mindful and considerate) that when subsuming knowledge of another character's class (or race or alignment for that matter), that the other player is being denied the opportunity to play those components of their own character.

Certain things about the different classes/races/alignments are common (character) knowledge, but when their own doctrines/dogmas/creeds/racial outlooks are quoted at them, well, that component of that character has just been rendered superfluous and impotent.

Regards,

Script Wrecked.

Introduce Yourself / Another belated introduction ~ Lynn1020
« on: June 30, 2008, 06:04:54 pm »
I finally caved in to do an intro myself. My real name is Tiffany. Lynn1020 comes from my middle name (Lynn), 1020 is from my wedding anniversary, October 20th. I am a southern girl and from what I have found out, I still have a very southern accent. I grew up in Kentucky until I married and moved with my husband. After moving to several different states (including a three year vacation in Hawaii) we now live in the Northwest, near Seattle. It never fails though; anytime I speak I am asked where am I from.

I have been a military wife for almost 18 years now, and also a stay at home mom to three kids (four if you count my husband). Two boys aged sixteen and thirteen, who both play Layo from time to time, and one girl age six. She plays the NWN single player version. I had to finally tell her she could start playing with us when her reading and writing improves. She will lecture me when she watches me play. "Mom do you want to keep playing Emie? Well stop going out alone and wait for your friends!"

I have to say I love that I get the chance to stay at home with the kids, even though you will often find me moaning and complaining. Especially now that I have been nursing a broken foot for the last couple of weeks, and the kids are out of school for the summer and I can't even drive! But at least it does give me an excuse to be in Layo even more.

My husband played Layo for two years before I started. In that time I have to say I hated Layonara. All I knew about it was that it was a game that kept my husband on the computer for hours!! Many times he tried to get me to watch him and try it out. I refused. I was happy with my scrapbooking and Zelda games. Then it got worse! He got our two sons playing it! It drove me nuts having to listen about it all the time. Well to make a very long story short, he finally got me to try it. Emie was born! That was almost two years ago so needless to say I was hooked and haven't left since. Now the whole family plays together at times. I never thought a game could make me laugh and cry as much as this one has.

I have never played any type of D&D game before Layonara. So there was so much I didn't understand and I am still learning. That being the reason Emie started out a lot like me...shy and quiet. Boy has she changed in the last two years!!

Rumour Has It / The old dwarf finally falls for good
« on: June 22, 2008, 11:53:49 am »
He needed exercise..his tired legs, bad knees, and slightly stooped back felt good today.  The axe was sharp but the trip was short.  He became surrounded by bandits because tactical position was broken.  Foolish?  Perhaps, but that is neither here nor there now.

The aged dwarf Dorax Windsmith finally gave in completely to the Soul Mother and now his soul prays from beyond this plane for Vorax to escort him into the Halls so that his deeds may be remembered.  A Blood War Veteran and friend to so many who have gone before him.  Certainly not the brightest, but a good dwarf none-the-less.  Rest in peace.

General Discussion / A belated farewell
« on: June 15, 2008, 08:19:54 am »
Hello everyone,

I've been meaning to make this post for some months now, but every time I thought about making it I'd think to myself, "Oh, I'll come back." Once I started thinking about Layonara again I'd get excited to come back and do one thing or another. But I never did come back and GM or play. The fact of the matter is, NWN had a good run (and I've spent and absolutely obscene amount of time playing it) but I'm tired of it. I'm not tired of Layonara, but I just don't want to play NWN anymore, and haven't for a while.

I'd like to formally announcing my resignation from all Layonara position that I've held and release any and all of my characters to NPC use.

Talan's house should go to Lalaith, I believe her and some other characters still use it. Akki's house in Krandor (137 I think, the one closest to the crypts) can be resold.

----

Since about the time I completely disappeared (last December-Januaryish) I've been working on my own project which has captured most of my free time. You can read about it on my blog at:

Cutthroat Studios Developer’s Blog

It's not an MMO or even in the same genre as Layonara, I hope L does not mind me posting the link. The Layonara MMO should come out well before it anyway, which I'm looking forward to as well!

If anyone wants to reach me, feel free to do so! You can find my contact information on the contact page of the website I linked to above (I'm trying to avoid posting my email address on forums these days, some of the email addresses I used to do that with now get more penis enlargement spam than I thought was possible lol.)

Anyway, Have fun everybody! I'm sorry that I won't be here to share the road.

General Discussion / For the love of Chongo's awesome new areas.
« on: June 14, 2008, 05:43:39 pm »
I can't stress enough how beautiful this guy's work is.  Ever since V3 and the subsequent updates, I always do a quick doubletake and take the time to look around amazed at what he's done with the place.  There are tilesets in use now that actually look BETTER and cripser than many of the NWN2 ones, and finally there's a decent amount of depth and height perception in places like Firesteep, which were originally very plateau-ish and "run across the flat plane and climb up to the next level-ish"  Now you actually get a feeling for the massive climb, and a sense of going upward.  A MAJOR feat considering how notoriously 2 dimensional the base bioware engine is in terms of altitude.  And now, after 4-5 years of being told "we will never have bard enemy spawns, they have horrible AI", I encountered one that actually works pretty well!

Major Kudos to him and the rest of the building team involved for the major facelift the place has gotten!  From the Dapplegreen to Firesteep, Dalanthar and the Thunder Peaks, this place just keeps getting better and better.
