General Discussion / End of an Era
« on: January 02, 2013, 12:57:42 pm »
For many of you this will come as no surprise, my absences of late  saying far more than words.  I wanted though to remove doubts and make  it official.

When I joined way back, Layonara was a different place with a different  vibe but like all things it has evolved over the years. People and  places change and sometimes relationships grow apart.  Its hard to admit  when something no longer works and that apart is far better than  together.
Layonara was a salvation in my life in a time when I needed an escape  from my reality.  Now Layonara only serves mostly as a catalyst of angst  and that's not the way it is supposed to be.

So from here forward I am stepping down as an active game master and  administrator.  I will still be around in the background as part of the  team for Lore consultations and I still have some quest loose ends to  tie up or move to other game masters.  I am not leaving all together as I  will be turning my concentration to the art of the MMO and writing.

Sincerely
  Minerva

Rumour Has It / General information and rumors
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:09:57 pm »
As time has passed the lands affected by famine have fallen into a holding pattern.  All urban growth has stopped and towns and cities have begun to recede in size.  Without a  stable food supply and loss of tax base due to migration, urban and suburban centres cannot function and there has been a return to the small sustainable villages and farming establishments.

Crops and livestock on a small scale are easier to protect and do not seem to wither to the extent of larger fields.   Population numbers are falling as families are having fewer surviving children due to the effects of poor nutrition and choice as well as migration to unaffected areas.  Armies and militias are also decreasing in numbers.

Depending on the dominant social system, those with wealth and power still have no problem obtaining the products they need, it just costs them more.  Dissidence is growing in the lower classes of some social systems where wealth is not shared and the those that hold power care little for the poor and middle classes.

The opposite holds true for those areas not effected by the famine.  Urban centres are booming and their populations are growing due to migration. Agriculture is expanding to support this population and export growth.  Wealth is being accumulated at all social levels for the most part and leaders are popular.  The trade in slave labour in the realms that permit and encourage such are  booming as disaffected and indebted peoples are falling victim to human trafficking.  Indentured servitude is also on the rise as the poor trade freedom for food. This cheap and bountiful labour source is also helping the growth of the all industry in prosperous areas, especially forestry, agriculture and mining.  Land and real estate in other kingdoms is being bought up as it becomes available.

Dark elf raids continue to plague the land at a rate far higher than what used to be considered the norm. Vale lies in ruins with only a few hardy souls still calling the area home.  There has been little to be done about rebuilding. Clover is desolate except for that one house that was not effected.  It too seems to lie empty and still.  No one was left to rebuild. Goblins and bugbears have taken advantage of the situation and their numbers are on the rise.

Peoples around the Forest of Fog did marshal together a militia and with the help of Rael the Benevolent and his army.  With the aid of a mercenary tracker they were able to discover an entrance to the deep where most of the raids had been mounted from.  A battle ensued where many lives were lost but the entrance was completely collapsed.  There are rumours that the Rael troops captured a demon horse and its rider and they were taken away.  All sources in the Rael establishment deny any such thing other than the successful battle occurred.

It is also rumoured that several ruling powers in affected areas formed a council to share information and  attempt to determine the cause and stop and hopefully reverse the effects of the famine. Authorities from several faiths and fields of study were invited to join.  Citing security reasons, little has been said about what has been discovered.  An observational telescope was erected on the slopes of Cyclops peak to watch the Red Eyes formation in the night sky.  They have gradually increased in brightness and size over time while other star formations have dimmed.  The number of stars in Lucinda's group has fallen to the lowest count in several centuries.

The peoples of Krandor are worried that civic leaders and tavern owners Connor Garvill and AnnaLee have not been seen in some time.  They were headed on a trip to Alindor and sources in Mariner's Hold confirm they arrived there but they have not been seen since entering the Wolfswood forest well over a year ago.

Layonara Server / Promotional Posters
« on: August 22, 2012, 11:41:12 pm »
These are two posters I have made to help promote the Layonara website and the game.  They can be downloaded from the downloads section as 300dpi 4800x6000 files that will print out fairly well at 16x20 or smaller.
(download section under optional downloads)
They are my contribution to helping to build the community.  I have printed out several and put them in the local comic book shops, game shops and one in the local library. I hope you will do the same.

Coming soon are web badges you can use to show your Layo spirit and perhaps generate some web traffic.

Enjoy

Rumour Has It / Blight strikes the town of Krandor
« on: July 04, 2012, 02:42:32 pm »
The vegetation around the Kelin Inn of Krandor has died and turned brown abruptly.  Town is unsettled as there are rumors that all the lovely houseplants within the inn are also dying.

Rumour Has It / Smoke in the Forest
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:28:51 pm »
Rangers sent out from Rangley to look for Vale refugees return to the town some days later with horrible news.

Plumes of smoke were seen rising from the forest south of Vale. A few of the group went to investigate leaving the others to search around Vale.

When they came upon what should be the village of Clover, it was a ghost town.  It looked as though the attack came in the night as many were found with their throats cut, still in their beds.  Watch dogs slaughtered efficiently.  What livestock and food might have been was looted.  Bodies of those that may have fought back were pile like cord wood infront of the home that once belonged to a Lucindite.  Rumor was it now belonged to a Folian follower than has not been seen in some time.

Most disturbing of all was the lack of children's bodies in the carnage. Infants and toddlers were gutted and drained of blood, some missing hearts and other organs.

In the village square a symbol, drawn in blood and glittering with mineral dust.  A Ranger copied the mark to parchment with trepetation before drawing water from the well and washing it from existance.

Rumour Has It / Shortages of Ale and Spirits
« on: June 21, 2012, 08:55:33 am »
With the dwindling stores of grain from lean harvests there has been less and less available for commercial enterprises making spirits and ale.  Stores have been diminished and now shortages are in hand.

Wine from Morholt however still flows in abundance and commands a premium price.  There is an active blackmarket in both alcohol and grain diverted for feeding livestock and humans to less scrupulous distilleries.

Rumour Has It / Refugees in Rangley
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:49:32 pm »
A ragged crew of men, many of them injured and near death crawl from the forest surrounding Rangley.  They bring dire warning from Vale.   The town is all but destroyed by a raiding party of dark elves.  The attack happened at the last double new moon.  The survivors that make their way into the town tell a horrific tale.  Men, women and children killed.  The priestess of the Katian temple strung up and tortured with her followers.  Those that did manage to escape claim they only did so because travelers to the town warned them that dark elves had been spotted in the forest and brought back the remains of a ranger scouting party that appeared to have been ambused and killed by dark elves.  Some of the residents were prepared, but sadly many others were not.

Rumour Has It / Heart of Dregar withers
« on: April 21, 2012, 10:35:02 pm »
Word on the docks is that the winter wheat crop in the belly of Rael's kingdom is blighting as it comes from the ground.

Poor harvests in Mask and Golden are leaving multitudes hungry and even the master of propaganda, Lord Rael, can't keep the rumors at bay.

There are fears that the blight may spread into the Forest of Fog.

Rumour Has It / Famine
« on: February 06, 2012, 06:54:49 pm »
The failure of crops to thrive and heavy losses in farming animals is taxing the food stores of many kingdoms.  Several good years and wise leadership in some areas will mean that the impact is lessened.

Healers hope that whatever scourage holds the lands, the dormancy of winter cleanses the soil for the next growing season. One hopes that when the harvest season rolls around next year that things will not look so dire.

General Discussion / The new Nova Series
« on: December 11, 2011, 01:50:08 pm »
Some of you may have seen the calandar event for my new series.  Due to some requests and events in game and out I am moving this to start in Jan.  'Tis the season for family events and parties so it was a poor start time choice for me.

The series is aimed to involve those higher level characters (19+) and all alignments are welcome by me (but not necc by the eventual party that forms).  It should run no longer than 5 sessions and I hope to have these at minimum monthly and maybe bi weekly if things pan out.  Each session should be 3-4 hours maximum.  The timezone is chosen for my comfort, my apologies to the Aussies and GMT players but at least its semi weekend time in most timezones.

Since the main quest is being moved, keep an eye out for in game impromptus leading up to it to have it make sense.  That means those high level characters might want to be out and about to be see what's going on in the world ;).

Rumour Has It / Activity in the Port Hemp Guild District
« on: July 16, 2011, 11:03:39 pm »
The area around the Foundation Guild hall is buzzing with activity.   While always a busy place, there seems to be more activity than is the  norm.  New faces, some looking bewildered and ragged, others grateful  and industrious bustle around the building.

Carts arrive bearing fruits of the recent harvest and adventuring souls  deposit donations of grains and other products withing the halls.
On fine days women can be seen sitting in the open windows, chatting as  hands busily tie bunches of onions into ropes or spinning wheels turn  tufts of fleece into warm wool skeins.  Looms can be heard clacking as  well as the scent of meals being prepared for those working.

Those entering the building would see make shift bunks along the walls  and children darting about under the watchful eye of matrons and teenage  girls alike.

Strong backs arrange supplies and carry barrels and sacks to and from  carts.  Little boys play pirate as they chatter about ships being  loaded.
Some where in the mix the familiar form of Katrien is seen occasionally  but more often as not it is her burly and jovial foreman Henry that is  directing the organized chaos.
