Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Shadowdancer's Shadow Summons
« on: May 18, 2007, 05:29:54 am »
There are SO many things that are lumped in as "Shadows" that you can't make really any true statements about the entire group other than that they all look "shadowy."

Two categories that is is IMPORTANT to distinguish between:

1 - Undead Shadows: Shades, Wraiths, Spectres, Ghosts, and on and on.
These are all evil. All unintelligent undead are Neutral Evil, They are mindless (most all mindless creatures are TN since they are unable to distinguish between good/evil, law/chaos) however, all undead are evil aligned due to the nature of the negative energy that binds them or animates them. Intelligent undead sometimes have more freedom of alignment, most being LE or CE if not NE.
NITPICKER'S NOTE: Bioware incorrectly made all their undead creatures CE.

2 - Shadow Shadows ("elemental" shadows if you will): These are from the plane of shadow and lean strongly towards TN, some are intelligent(ish), generally speaking, most aren't that smart.

-----

A shadow dancer doesn't have anything to do with undead (well, they might, but if so, it has nothing to do with the fact that they are a shadowdancer.) A shadow dancer always works with the 2nd type of shadow that I describe above.
NITPICKER'S NOTE: If you examine the shadowdancer's summoned shadow's character sheet in game, you will notice that its alignment is CE. The proper alignment of the summon is TN. This mistake is related to the last nitpicker's note.

It is usually perceived as one of the strongest spells in game, though...

Together with self-buffs wizards are capable of, it tend to make them as good (or even better) fighters than what... eh... fighters are.

Not that anyone would be insane enough to use this spell constantly as a replacement for true fighters. Limited duration after all... :p

A fighter of equivalent level buffed by a wizard is far better than a wizard with tensors.

Fighters also have a longer duration *winks*

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: HiPS versus Stealth
« on: May 18, 2007, 05:10:03 am »
Actually, the Shadowdancer description in the DMG makes no mention of the IC metaphysics behind HiPS nor shadow jump (the two SD abilities that would be nicely explained with some sort of extraplanar traval.) It mostly talks about the game mechanics and gives some very short descriptions of what the Shadowdancer does (not how though.)

So really, there is no precedent in any of those three sources for this barring supplemental or 3rd party PnP sources and anything that might be in the new (yet unreleased) Layo handbook on the topic.

The explanation that I have always used is that a Shadow Dancer can manipulate existing shadow (which is supported by the shadow evade and shadow daze abilities) to effectively camoflague themselves. This explanation also jives with the requirement that the shadowdancer must be within a shadow, they must have material to work with.

This statement:
Quote
I could walk up to you and wave my hand right infront of your face, and chances are you would not see me. punch you in your face then hide, while your looking directly at me.

ignores the requirement that the Shadowdancer be in shadow to use HiPS.

Planar travel is not needed to explain a shadowdancer's abilities and is outside of the scope of the PrC's standard abilities.

I'm pretty sure the stats of the creature you polymorph into have been modified to be in line with the general server balance, however, I do not know what those changes are and they are not documented anywhere afaik if they have been changed from bioware default.

I was always under the impression that a shadow dancer slipped between the  planes, the prime and the shadow plane, and that they could do this only when in 10 feet of a shadow, and it can not be there own. Is this connected to the mechanics of the ability, or different from which you speak? I never played a shadow dancer in PnP merely read up on them. I know they slip between the prime and shadow plane when they use shadow jump, and they call forth a shadow from the shadow plane.

That is definitely not the case in PnP or Layonara.

The plane of shadow is a really really really nasty place. Both planewalking to it AND surviving there for more than a second or two are epic abilities.

To clarify, by "epic abilities" I do not mean they are feats you can choose or whatnot. I mean that they're incredible things that it would take an epic character to think about trying.

But if I can't sell anything at all at the "accepted prices" then to me that means that the "accepted prices" are no good anymore.

The problem is that on the very small scale we have here (players are the only consumers) is that supply and demand is irrelevant.

If you can't sell anything at accepted prices then you can't sell anything at all.

The issue is that there isn't demand. Supply far outstrips demand when 1/4 of the possible consumer pool of players are also suppliers (crafting.)

The (realworld) logic for reducing prices to boost sales is this: If someone is going to buy say, a box of chocolate there is a certain amount they're willing to spend on that. If chocolates are 1/2 price or maybe.. 60% of the usual price, people might buy two. Cause they'll eat them right? However, in layo, even if the price of Iron Longswords drops to 12 gp, no one is going to buy 60 of them.

Essentially this is durable goods vs consumables.

Someone might buy 60 potions if they drop in price but never 60 longwords for the same reasons you might buy 60 boxes of chocolate but you would never buy 60 dishwashers even if they dropped to 1/60th of their usual price.

To add to the list:

Jane Yolen - Dragon's Blood

Edit: For those of you considering reading the silmarillion and get incredibly bored in the first section to the point where you're about to give up... just skip to the main section of the book. It'll give you the reason to read the beginning (which has been (accurately) portrayed as reading like the old testemant.)

after a while it just seemed too 'closed in' in comparrison to the wide-open spaces of Hempstead.

This was totally my intent with that area. Also I wanted all PC traffic to go through the same area (the central walk through the main town) when passing through rather than have many different paths they could take through the city so that people would meet up rather than miss each other.

Vehl also needs a ship connection to hempstead. Currently you can sail to vehl from hempstead but you have to go Vehl->Mariner's Hold->Hempstead to get back.

I am just curious, did they check for food allergies?  I get severe abdominal pains any time I eat tomatillas, the key ingredient in green salsa.

I remember the weird taste in my mouth when I got the IV for some CT scans.

Maybe my mom gave you the scan, she does that for a living :D

Good luck!

AeonBlues

Wow, thats kinda obscure. Is it just tomatillas?

Checking for food allegries is a good idea especially since it is a relatively non-invasive and inexpensive test (compared to the stuff they might try to do after CTs where nothing shows up.)

Gnolls are not goblinoids in core rules.  They are Medium Humanoid (Gnoll) as oposed to a bugbear that is Medium Humanoid (Goblinoid)

Maybe this is a NWN thing, maybe Lore is in error on this. *shrugs*

AeonBlues

I think that might be a 3.5 thing. Pretty sure that in NWN at least there is no "Humanoid" racial type (even though there is a humanoid category in the toolset.)

Kobolds are Reptilian Humanoids.

I can't think of anything else that's a goblinoid off the top of my head other than some uber obscure things that I remember from 2nd Ed.

So... um... while it is in theory possible to make SR stackable by scripting (I have yet to see something impossible... if one wants to put in enough effort!) it's in practice far too error prone (at least with a quick though of the matter) to be worth the effort. ;)

It's also a bad idea balance wise.

On that note, white is a very inconvenient colour, for an adventurer. After a few hours, that pristine robe would be painted red.

In PnP clerics have a spell that would clean it.

Or was that to fix it if it ripped... hrmm, I think they had both.

Gah, after reading the first post I was going to suggest these two... Never played the Civilization board game but I played Settlers of Catan a couple times and had fun.
