After today's lesson on spell choices and weapon imbueing, Abi asked me to join her on a trip north. She had never taken me anywhere outside the academy or the arena before, so I was quite excited about what lay in wait.

We came to a forest and Abi went ahead to scout. She soon returned with news that a group of ogres lay in ambush ahead. She wished to see how far I had come in my training, so she sent me into the fray with my wards up. I managed to defeat the ogres, though I got knocked around a little, especially by one ogre that cast a frost spell at me. But I shook off the shock of the frost and cut it down.

After the first fight Abi showed me a few spells that would give me an advantage against the ogres. When we came upon the next group, her advice paid off and it went much better. Amazing what a haste spell can do. It was good to try my skills against real opponents. Finally got a chance to really see what my new skills can do.

When the day was nearing its end we returned to Wayfare and sat down by the lake. We talked about the day's events, about my months of training, and about the future. I was nervous about hearing her evaluation of my progress, but luckily I had no reason to be! She said that to move forward now I would have to find my own experiences, that there was nothing more she could teach me at this time. I was very happy to hear that, but at the same time a little sad that our training together was comming to an end.

Abi is no longer my teacher, but she will remain my friend. And I expect to learn much from my friend in the future.

I guess I can call myself a novice spellblade now. How long I have longed to cross this barrier...

Sore and exhausted from all the physical training Abi has put him through in the previous months, Micus spends the next weeks at the Academy in Hempstead. Here he attends lectures in the use of the Al'Noth. Lectures on how to defend himself with spells, proper use of offensive spells, and the advantages and disadvantages on the different schools of magic.

Much of the time is spent in discussion groups with the other students at the academy. They discuss which spells are appropriate in various situations, mostly during combat, and the teachers and senior students walk around among them offering advice and listening to each group's reasoning for choosing this spell over that for a specific situation.

Micus often finds himself at odds with the other students. Almost all of them are traditional mages who advocates casting from distance and staying in the back, while Micus mostly prefers to coat himself in layers of protective abjurations and approach the enemy with both blade and spell in hand.

During his time at the academy Micus also meets Headmaster Omer who welcomes him and they share a discussion on spellblades. The headmaster even extends an offer to help train Micus, with Abi's leave of course.

A few days later Abi and Micus meet once more at the Hempstead School of Magic.

As they enter the training hall, Micus notices that there are several pieces of scaffolding setup and ramps running up and down and across them no more than about 2 feet wide.

Abi addresses Micus. "So you did really well at the arena. I was pretty pleased with you, even if you did get your butt kicked." Laughingly, "And yes i got mine handed to me a little bit too. It happens and was good for us both. So now, I think you've had yourself enough rest and most of your bruises look like they are healing up well."

"For the next bit of training, you are gonna put on that heavy armor and run around the scaffolding and me and a few of these students," she indicates a few sorcerors and mages nearby grinning and waving at you like you are so screwed, "are gonna be casting some nice spells at you. Nothing too dangerous mind you. We want you alive. All you have to do is cast defensive spells. Shield, Visage and the like. I remember from before you said you didnt have a few of these available to you. Well welcome to the magic school!" She pulls out a small scroll case and inside Micus finds several of the spells he had said he didnt know. "Dont worry, I'm not gonna throw you to the wolves yet. You've got a few hours first to get them figured out and learn them. I'm sure one or two of the other students will help you if you have any questions. Feel free to run the scaffolds to see what they are like in full armor. Be ready when i come back."

After several hours of memorization, casting and trying to figure out how the spells work and copying them to his spell book, Micus decides to have a go at the scaffolds. At first he runs around them without the armor to see what they are like, and later he walks along them in full armor. Definitely a bit different, as the boards bend under the excess weight and he notices his movements are bit more encumbered.

Upon returning, Abi smiles as she sees him on the scaffold in his armor and she calls up. "If you're ready, I'm gonna begin...defend yourself!" Next thing he knows he is being hit with a ray of frost, his armor freezing and his fingers going numb. Before he can act he sees another student starting to generate an attack that he instantly recognizes as missiles and he starts trying to cast a shield spell. It goes up barely in the nick of time, the missiles pummeling into the shield forcing him to nearly fall off the back edge of the scaffolding!

As Micus immediately go down on one knee to keep himself from falling off he senses his shield spell being disrupted. Next he sees several ice darts coming his way and without thinking drop to his chest as they whistle past where he had just been kneeling a moment ago. He can hear them smash into the wall a few feet behind him!
As Micus tries to get up, swearing at the armor's weight holding him down and making movement diffucult to get going he looks down and sees another student drawing back his arms as if he's gonna fire an arrow. Micus immediately begin casting another shield spell...this time it fizzles and he is hit in the chest with an acid arrow, the force of the hit sending him over the back of the scaffolding onto the the level below. As he lie there, stunned for a moment, his mind racing as to how to get out of this unlucky position of lying on his back, he quickly begin casting a visage spell. He feels the magic course through him and the spell takes...As he rolls onto his side and stand up several magic missiles hit him all at once from several directions but the spell holds absorbing the energy. Micus looks down smiling and sees Abi grinning in approval as he adjusts his balance and more low level spells are absorbed by his spell.

A moment later all the chanting ceases as Abi indicates for him to come down. Smiling as he makes his way down he notices Terence, the student from before, giving him a haughty look like he just got lucky. Terence then turns and leaves.

"Good work Micus. You werent quite ready and you adjusted yourself well. Thinking on your feet, or rather your back was smart! It gave you the time you needed to recompose yourself and check the situation out. It stinks when your spells misfire though doesn't it? You took a bit of a fall when that arrow hit you in the chest." Smiling reassuredly, she checks out his armor to make sure it's in decent shape and checks to make sure he isn't overly injured.

"When I was doing this, I had to scale a cliff face while my teacher and his buddies were casting fireballs, missiles and gods know what at me! I still feel like Im a bit more cooked now than when i left!"

"Now...recompose yourself and we shall do it again."

It has been a long tough week of training. Abi certainly has skills and no shortage of confidence in her abilities. She goes about things different than I. Surely more reckless. I think it must be the sorceress in her that gives her that wild streak. I have no doubt she can teach me despite our differences. She sure preaches practical training over theoretical, which is well enough seeing how my childhood training was dominated by theoretical knowledge.

I swear there are more holes than fabric left in my cloak.  that SehKy and his bow! That test really stretched my abilities to the limit - it is surprisingly difficult to concentrate on casting a spell while wearing that cumbersome armor AND while being pummeled by a rain of SehKy's arrows.

Wasn't much easier when Dot pulled out her whip. At least my belt protected me against most of the damage, but it didn't help when she coiled the whip around my ancle and pulled me to the floor. Lesson learned, you can't really cast when on your back. I did manage to get to her a few times though, needed that little confidence boost.

The young girl with the dark mood and fists of stone was a more fair challenge I think. Although my jaw is still sore from that punch she led with, but after my head cleared I was mostly able to fend off her fists with my shield and my defensive spells. I never found a spell to counter her sharp tongue though... She was NOT impressed with my abilities and she didnt keep those thoughts to herself either. Once i master the skills of the spellblade I will show her what it means to combine spell and blade to something greater. Greater surely than fighting unarmored and barehanded...

I fear I got off to a bad start with Abi's friend Bear. Our first training session and I think he might have underestimated me quite a bit. Before he even reached me I blasted off a perfectly aimed color spray spell right into his face, and it left him dazed and oblivious and quite unable to defend himself. I'm sure I hurt his pride more than I was able to do actual harm to him. On top of that he seemed a little posessive of Abi and might be a little jaleous with all the time she has spent training me. At least he seems the type that will have forgotten all this before his next meal. Maybe I should bring him a bottle of honey next time to try and get on his good side...

After a couple of weeks of neverending running and jumping and casting and bruises and just utter exhaustion, Abi sets him down next to her. While he is catching his breath she offers him some water.

"your balance and sense of movement have definitely been improving. You're a quick learner and that's good." She smiles as she praises him. "Your concentration is getting more focused and with that the power of your spells is increasing as well. It's a whole different bag of grubs when you're exhausted and under pressure isn't it?" She smiles and offers him a grub from her pouch as she pops one into her mouth. Micus respectfully accepts it, but tosses it behind his back as she is focussed on her own. "Just remember though, running around slashing here and there and launching spells at your enemy isn't the only way to fight. It took me a while to get this concept too. Sometimes in a fight it isn't practical to fire off a lightning bolt or summon a badger," she smiles. "Sometimes an enemy is just too difficult or there are maybe too many around you at once to bother with something like that. OR maybe your friends and allies are in the way. That happens often enough too. So think, what do you do. This is where really developing your focus comes into play, developing your skill with your particular weapon of the moment and developing your spells that aid you in the fight also. Meditate upon this as you train. Any questions?"

"Now, get some rest, in a couple of days we will start your next step in training." Grinning from ear to ear she heads out.

Micus looks around the room with a thoughtful expression, noting the position each obstacle has chosen. Then he smiles wickedly at Abi. "Adapt and improvise, got yah!" Just before he launches into a new run, he fires off two quick spells, then sets off.

His feet moves like a blur as his magical speed takes him up to the first student. The student steps right into his path expecting a quick takedown, but the next moment Micus is past him. As if he wasn't really in the position he seemed to be. A huge frown grows on the students face as he realises it was a displacement spell Micus had cast...

Past the first student, Micus attempts his first spell-on-the-move. Mid-cast he brushes against one of the students, as he not quite managed to avoid his wildly swinging arms, and a ray of frost flies right past Abi's left ear. A few more attempts that fails without even materializing and he realises that he has no more spells memorized.
The displacement spell has expired, so he stiff-arms the next student and launches into a slide, gliding right under a dummy while drawing his sword in a fluid motion, comming up behind the dummy with a backhand slice across its neck.

Micus pulls himself up and looks proudly at Abi. "Got another one!" The grin that has spread across his face has just enough time to turn into a frown before a handful of students barrel into him bringing them all down in a pile.

"You sure did" Abi laughs as she walks up to Micus and the students start disentangling themselves form each other and poor Micus who is lying at the bottom of the dog pile. Pulling the icicle from her hair she offers Micus a hand up, "Not bad. You definitely are getting the idea of it. Now do it again."

As Micus catches his breath Abi wanders over to the badger and has a nice little chat with it before it goes back to wherever it came from. Tickling its chin whiskers goodbye as it goes poof.

Smiling she returns to Micus. "Not bad. Well...that dummy certainly learned its lesson" Indicating the one on fire.

"You did pretty good for a first timer. I remember poor Flynn...he nearly had a heart attack the first time he did it!" She laughs lightly.

"Now catch your breath, this time I'll make it a bit easier for you." She gives Micus a crooked smile as she calls out to some students in the other room.

Several students enter the room and after a brief chat and much cajoling from Abi they wander to different positions in the arena. Many of the students shaking their heads in a 'oh gods not again' motion.

"Now just to show im a good sport. Catch your breath and watch." With a nod to the students Abi races off.

As she runs towards one student she fires off a blast of magic missiles that separate and hit the student full on in the chest while several others strike 2 of the closest dummies. A monster of a man appears suddenly to her left and grabs ABis arm whipping her around, at first it seems like she is going ot be thrown but then at the last second you see a bright flash and the large man starts convulsing as Abi shocks him. His size slowing her down, She immediately targets another dummy with a bolt of lightning, the smell of ozone fills the room. As she rounds the far end of the room a mageling casts his spell and an oil slick forms under Abis feet as she is about to send off a flurry of missiles at another target. Instead they go wild, blasting a few light globes nearby and nearly singing the hair on your head as another passes overhead slamming into the wall. As she slides along the slick she drops to a knee and into the mageling sending his feet over his head as she passes underneath. She immediately spins and fires off set magic missiles again, hitting the last of the dummies.

Panting and grinning she gets up and walks over to Micus. "See...easy."

"They wont be so hard on you. They will just try and stop you and interfere with you for now." She pants reassuringly.

Her tone immediately changes. A serious cast and intensity fill her voice. "This is how a spellsword fights." Holding up a small dagger it immediately starts crackling and lightning dances along its edge. "This is only a small fraction of what we do. *Indicating the dagger* How we fight, *she tilts her head to the students and dummies* that is what a spellsword does and is. And we do it better than anyone."

"You will learn to call on the magic in the heat of battle, under the worst conditions imaginable. When everyone else fails. We dont. Mages will typically cast from a safe distance, free from distraction. We do it in the heart of battle. Aiding our comrades, destroying our enemies. This is your first lesson."

"Dont worry, it only gets harder." Her tone immediately changing to a light airy note. "As you saw, even Im not perfect, but you will learn to adapt and move quickly as things change."

"Now...close your mouth, being slack jawed is so unbecoming. And its your turn."

"Now Micus, same thing again. Only this time the other students are gonna try and get in your way and interfere with you. Dont worry, they wont be casting or anything, at least they arent supposed to to." She says with a wink.

*Entering into the main foyer of the Hempstead school of magic you see a pink haired girl walking up to you as you wait.*

"Hello, I hear you're interested in learning to be a spellsword." She says rather matter of factly though obviously she is sizing up your potential.

"My name is Abi Firesteed. I'm the instructor here. I will tell you that becoming a spellsword is no easy task. It takes lots of practice and dedication. Think you're up for it?" Though her voice seems rather lighthearted you can tell she takes this very seriously.

"So tell me a little bit about yourself master Sunweaver. And what you know of spellswording."

"Hello miss Firesteed, I'm glad you have taken the time to see me."

"You shall have my story, the short version of course *winks with a smile*. I was born on the elven island of Voltrex, and was raised among the finest elven spellblades the island had to offer - my father was one of them. *He pauses a moment*
From childhood i was trained to both wield a blade and cast spells, but my training never reached the specific skills of the spellblade before I left to seek my own path."

"I know much of the theory, but not enough of the practical yet. For many years I have practiced on my own but have reached a point where i need an instructor to get me the final stretch. Several years ago I approached master Storold and he has helped me much with imbuing my blade. If you will allow me *He unsheaths his blade and takes a moment to focus, then goes into a flowing dance with the blade. (You probably recognize it as a form of the spell flame weapon, but some parts seem to be altered somewhat) An icy coating creeps down the blade and stays a few seconds untill he releases it*"

"I can keep it up for a few minutes, even while walking around, but in a fight i lose my concentration immediatly."

"Now, where i struggle the most is with casting spells while wearing my armor. In this area master Storold is not able to help with my training, but i hope that you might be able to *He looks at her with hope in his eyes*"

"Well...as it happens I was also trained on Voltrex. My great great great uncle taught me. And he in turn learned from my great great grandfather."

"So...to tell you a little bit about your training. Should you take it up from me. Is that spellswords are more than just casting in armor and making their blades dance with power."

"Any idiot with a bit of magic and training can bring fire to their weapons and cast a few spells then waltz into a fight"

"When a spellsword fights, the magic flows thru him. He can call lightning in the middle of fight and use it like he uses his sword. He also can command the al'noth to flow thru him and become an extension of himself upon his weapon...more so than a normal flame spell ever could. With practice and training, your power will strip the life from an enemy in one blow, freeze the marrow in their bones and even be able drain their life and replenish yours. These are the abilities you may learn to harness."

"As far as casting in armor...your concentration and movement will develop as your fighting style will dictate. I can teach you to move in various types of armor, but its only thru diligent practice that you will find what works for you."

"SO what do you think? Are you ready to begin?"

*He raises an eyebrow as he hear she was trained on Voltrex, then listens to the rest*

"That is why I'm here miss. I am ready to begin immediatly."

Was practicing casting spells while wearing my armor yesterday, and after a series of succesful castings I decided to show off my skills to the goblin sentry on the hill outside Hlint. I walked right up to him with my blade out and he clearly expected a swordfight. I started weaving my blade around trying to complete the patterns for a Color Spray spell, and when the spell fizzled away, I looked up and the goblin just stood there staring at me like I was crazy. He looked really surprised when I resolutely jammed my sword into his throat.

Guess a little dance can be just as effective as a spell... But i would rather just complete the spell the next time!

I was seeking out one miss Abigail as I have learned she is a great spellblade, and my search happened to lead me right into the arms of a big wedding in Hlint. Unfortunately miss Abigail was too busy to talk, as she seemed to be a part of the wedding planning, but luck was with me still.

I met master Storold at the wedding, and he has agreed to instruct me further in the art of imbuing my blade. We had a lengthy discussion at the party after the wedding about techniques and training paths, and I can honestly say I left the party wiser.

I am focusing on enchanting my blade with frost and to that end I'm experimenting with mixing the frost ray spell with the flame blade spell. I have had some succes by switching out the fire element with frost from the ray spell, and keeping the binding element from the flame blade spell. This has allowed me to keep the enchantment active, even while moving around. A little more experimenting and I think I got it!

I still plan to seek out miss Abigail. Storold told me she would be able to instruct me in the art of casting spells while wearing armor. Another aspect of the spellblade entirely and one that I must pursue further.

Arriving back in Hempstead yesterday I really hadn't expected this much time had passed...years and years. Much have changed since I booked passage on that merchant ship to the northern islands of the Polar sea.

In that secluded place I found an inner calm I have never known before. One that is needed if I am to be a master spellblade. It was an unforgiving place in a harsh environment; can't say I'm gonna miss it but yet I carry some wisdom with me back to "civilization".

I spent days on end practicing with blade and spell. Meditation calmed my mind and allowed me to focus whenever I became restless. I travelled from village to village offering sword or spell in exchange for food and lodging. It gave me something to do and a context in which to hone my skills with a purpose to drive me.

Now I feel I'm just about ready to take the next step. Following the teachings of Storold Doesscha I can succesfully hold an enchantment on my blade for several minutes, although it takes all of my concentration and the smallest disturbance breaks it instantly. But soon I will be able to keep it up while walking...running...even fighting. I can almost taste it now.
