Layonara Server / LORE Character Updates
« on: January 29, 2009, 04:23:16 am »
While working on some web server backup maintenance, with the help of orth we made some changes to LORE. The two most notable differences are:

 • Character pages are now updating again
 • The antiquated header logo has been changed

Enjoy!

General Discussion / A Campaign To Free Up Houses
« on: December 29, 2008, 11:13:34 pm »
This is for everyone who owns a home in game but does not play their character enough to warrant it.

I don't think the build team should be responsible for cleaning up unused homes, or rather I don't think Orth or Dorg should have to spend the time doing a manual DB edit.

A lot of us have old characters with a home.  We don't use the homes, they're just sitting there collecting dust with old junk.

Now, my hope is that my gesture starts a chain from these folks.  You know perfectly well who you are.  There are a lot of newcomers who just haven't had that chance to own a home and try it out.  We had our chance, and if you haven't played your character more then 10 hours in the past two months... I'd call that a pretty good starting sign.

I've been greedy with Ket's home for over a year now.  Time to fess up.

I'm going to put Ketil's back on the market this week.  I hope others follow suit.  (Lillian, I hope you're on board with this.  You may want to clear out your things.  Donate them!)

Rumour Has It / Word out of Willows Weep
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:50:07 pm »
Throughout the chaos of the war against Sinthar Bloodstone, and beyond the end of the war and the Dark Ages that descended upon Layonara, the Tomb of Lost Heroes has remained a largely quiet and dormant place. The very place meant to ensure that the Lost are not forgotten was itself forgotten amongst the greater concerns of the age.  The news of new and foul plots in the world, the prospect of another war and further hardship for the world seem to dominate the talks where people gathered. The minds of most are on their futures, not on the fate of heroes who have passed from mortal life.

Yet in recent weeks, whispers then rumors begin to float through towns and cities, speaking of the Tomb in Willows Weep and of how it has been cleared of the neglect of decades.  Rumors speak of an anonymous benefactor who wishes the past not be forgotten. Still other rumors say it is the work of locals who felt the Tomb deserved to live up to its name.  Whatever the real story may be, one thing is consistent throughout all reports:

The Tomb of Lost Heroes is "alive" with new monuments to the fallen.

Which heroes past have been enshrined?  The tales and stories of such are as varied as those who tell them.  There's only one way to know for sure...

Rumour Has It / Goldwin Blacknight - Life of a Hero
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:43:46 pm »
It is with the greatest of sadness that I write this letter to inform all those who knew Goldwin Blacknight, of his passing. He died as he lived protecting the innocent and less fortunate. He died saving the life of a child. There can be no greater sacrifice given, than a life given to save another.

I write to tell you of his courageous spririt, of his giving heart. Of a friend who will be missed and never forgotten. He always offered to help where he could, and protect those he loved with a understanding that his life was lived for more than just the trivial possesions, but to help those who needed him to become better people.

I am one of those who became better for knowing him and I will never forget my treasured friend.

Goldwin Blacknight will be sorely missed, walk always in the light Goldwin Blacknight.

With a deep respect and fond friendship,
 ~Elohanna Dawnstar

Layonara Server / Donations & The Future of NWN
« on: October 01, 2008, 11:36:47 pm »
Hello again,

I've received a couple queries to the status of donations which I wanted to address with the upcoming changes to the servers.

Essentially what we've always hoped for in terms of donations was enough to offset the costs to host NWN.  That was five servers and their bandwidth.  At its peak, Leanthar was paying over $500 a month for these servers.  Over the summer it was closer to $300, but the charges were going to be over $1000 a month with the new billing structure.  An impossible price.

The donations always helped and each of us was always afraid of the potential of Leanthar just really not being able to cut it any more.  I lost sleep when he told me of the new pricing and the inevitability of the downtime.  In the end Leanthar and I both had many reasons for finding every way possible to keep NWN going.  Despite the financial weight which could be better spent, the occasional stress, the time lost better spent on future development, we really want NWN to keep serving our world.

There are a lot of people who help right now, the developers, the gamemasters, the character approvers, the lore team, the writers, the mmo team who have all helped us in the direction we seek and to continue to serve Layonara as a magnificent world realized in the form of a video game.  To not bridge the time from now until the release of the mmo with a video game entity of Layonara would in our minds have been a disservice to everyone who helps out.  Then there's the rest of the community, those who have been here for long times and those of you who have just fallen in love with Layonara.  Despite the very limited amount of rotten apples in the orchard, we really enjoy hearing about the great times you've had.  Your creative outlets both in game and in the forums.  Your community spirit and support.

It is also no secret, we are hoping each of you will see NWN to the other side, and give us a chance in our future generation. Having even a fairly small starting community will be a boon to attracting more folks.  Especially those very well versed in roleplay and its potential for enjoyment.  And I certainly know the benefits in terms of seeking beta testers with technical aptitude.  I truly hope we can carry this weight that NWN can sometimes be across the bridge.  There are still concerns beyond the financial strain.  The most important being time dealing with the inevitable issues that serving the world brings up.

Finally on a personal note, where would I be without having some Plenarius time?  I'm not ready to just write him off in a story, I want to play it out where it all started.

So we have taken quite a downsize, we've lost 7 servers, 5 for NWN which will be combined into 2 in Montreal. 1 for DB and fileshare, and 1 to run West and Central. We'll probably have to do without a Quest server unless we can run a third module on the one server, which Dorganath and I doubt.  We also lost 2 of our development servers.   All of our hosting, 5 servers, is now in Montreal. 4 of these are paid by OneST8, one of them is piggy backed with some of our (him and I) other personal pages.  The 5th one we're getting tomorrow/Friday will be paid by me.  The tasks the 2 development servers from San Jose handled are now squeezed into the 3 remaining servers in Montreal. We have assurances from EdTheKet, Dorganath and Thak that they can help the financial strain if necessary.

So here's the deal, if you want to keep helping out to say thanks for fronting the cost of the bandwidth and server for NWN, keep donating.  With that said, the truth is that we will continue to eat the costs ourselves regardless if you donate or not as the servers will be used for our future whether they host NWN or not.  NWN Layonara is in good hands for now, but be willing to accept its inevitable departure, hopefully with fair warning.

If you want to say thanks to Leanthar for all he's paid in the past until now then donate.  (Expenses incurred are over $20,000, that is minus all past donations.)
If you want to help OneST8 and I foot the bill, hey thanks... donate. (Average monthly bill for the two NWN servers will be $200)
If you're excited about our future and wish to help us in that regard, donations are welcome.

To recap, you owe us nothing but continuing to enjoy the world, or if you have the time, continuing to volunteer as you can and hopefully you will give us a chance with the future generation of Layonara.

If for whatever reason you just can't donate.  It's cool, don't feel bad, we'll do our best to stay alive. Alas, all good things eventually come to an end, but we're pretty confident we'll have a phoenix rising from the ashes.  Hope to see you there to witness it!

-James

General Discussion / One Last Time
« on: September 30, 2008, 06:11:45 pm »
" As we descended we  came upon the last dwarven tunnel, a hallway that led to a large natural cavern.  The hall was rough as though the cutters broke through into the cavern and left  their duties of perfecting the path for another time, one that never came. Thus  began a descent deeper and deeper, tunnels not dug by hands but burrowed or even  eaten from the solid core of the mountain high above us lead from cavern to  cavern. No more level rooms were to be found as we went down, further and  further into Layonara. The simple clans and beasts from above grew scarce as  deeper and fouler beasts, some that have never seen the sun, turned common and  our group now trekked slowly and carefully."

---Harolgar, Frostblade  of the White Fox Clan---

About a month or so ago I tendered my  resignation to Layonara team. I used to be able to crank out hours upon hours of  building on top of playing the game for hours on end. These days I can't really  find committed time to fulfill my duties as a full time quest GM on top of  growing our little garden of NWN Layonara. I thought about clinging onto the GM  seat, I really did. But all I'd end up doing is passing judgement or chiming in  my steady opinion from afar without an inkling or grasp of our community. So  it's time to call it quits.

When I started off with the relic based  entry theme/ system, I built a good chunk of new material. It was closed and  locked off waiting for completion both in building and the scripting needed to  successfully implement it. Also, older material that had been converted was  locked off. Since Dorg finalized 1.69 several weeks ago, I picked up the modules  for one last swing and wrapped everything up that I was capable of handling on  my own, with a little help on puzzle scripting from ScriptWrecked (thanks  script).

The major new addition to the server is the  region of the Great Spikes of the Blinding Lands, implemented as closely to Ed's  team's new writings on it as I could muster knowing all the potentials of the  toolset... of course with ample spins and twists on it to appropriately get an  amused growl from Ed. The adventure of these northern realms is pretty neat.  It's an older and perhaps simpler vibe, one that I had a lot of fun working on.  And the GM who first picks up on the nature of the region and the number of  quests to be had here is lucky. All in all around 70 areas that were either  locked off or didn't yet exist are now in game and waiting for you. There are  also a couple of new quest areas to get things kicking on quests. Beyond that  it's the normal fixes here and there, trying to wrap the monster that was too  hard here, and the area that needed a bit of love there.

I've had a great time working on this  module, and hope you guys liked what came of v3. I'll support fixes for the next  couple of weeks to make sure nothing is quirky, and after that I'll still be  around playing.

So, I suppose I'll see you in there, and  remember - when you find a book, take the time to read it and talk about it. It  may save your life.

General Discussion / A travelling bazaar!
« on: August 21, 2008, 04:56:14 pm »
Dream of opening an ingame shop?
First Friday Fair at Stormcrest

As much as I try, I cannot resist doing more than just hacking at giants ingame.  It is a curse, a plague, a feebleness of the mind.  So...

One thing about running a shop is that when there's no one around, it gets pretty boring.  You're standing there twiddling your thumbs when you suddenly get a whiff of an adventure afoot.  Do you join them and abandon your RP post?  If you do, you might miss that RP that is walking down the path just out of sight.  If you don't, you will likely kick yourself later as your buddies are leveling and you're dreaming of new PCs to submit for approval.

There is a solution provided to us by the very capable Layonara development team:  [lore]PC Quest System NPC and Chests[/lore].  See this image for an example of what is possible:  Dubbel's Store.

Here's what I'm thinking:  A group of RP-minded players band together and form a travelling market.  The goods in the chests would be RP items (foods, ales, pipeweed, etc.).  If you were there in person (between adventures) you could hawk your more durable goods.  Remember that the chests are not persistent across resets, nor are there any safeguards to theft since payment would be by the honor system.

I have some more ideas for this but following my own advice I'll think big and start small.
 • Sign up one or more food, ale, and pipeweed sellers
 • Partner with an existing PC-run business
 • Send out bird messages with the week's menu and small tidbits about the vendors
 • Have the paperboy sell the menu
 • Work towards establishing a new tavern in a location like the Thundervalley Crossroads

Rumour Has It / The old dwarf finally falls for good
« on: June 22, 2008, 11:53:49 am »
He needed exercise..his tired legs, bad knees, and slightly stooped back felt good today.  The axe was sharp but the trip was short.  He became surrounded by bandits because tactical position was broken.  Foolish?  Perhaps, but that is neither here nor there now.

The aged dwarf Dorax Windsmith finally gave in completely to the Soul Mother and now his soul prays from beyond this plane for Vorax to escort him into the Halls so that his deeds may be remembered.  A Blood War Veteran and friend to so many who have gone before him.  Certainly not the brightest, but a good dwarf none-the-less.  Rest in peace.

General Discussion / Thank you!
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:57:32 am »
I want to take a moment to thank all of the people involved in the last three updates over the past two weeks. There has been many long hours (I would be willing to bet at least a thousand) put in to these updates and it is clear their love for the world and community is what keeps them working on updates. The past six months have been extremlly packed with RL happenings, holidays, family issues, and the list goes on and yet these individuals continue to produce updates for the community.

There can not be enough thanks for them but I just want to make sure everybody understands that their selflessness is what continues to make the world a great gaming place that is enjoyed by many around the world.

 In no special order:
Gulnyr, muaddib, Chongo, Eorendil, Darkstorme, Weeblie, Script Wrecked, and Dorganth.

 Thank you and good job!!

I also want to thank everybody on the GM Team, now and in the past. I firmly believe that a major part of what makes Layonara so special is the GM Team and all of the events they run and all of the difficult work they do behind the scenes (online and off) in order to ensure that Layonara remains a RP server at heart. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and it is your attention to the spirit of the server which is what continues to make Layonara loved by many.

Thanks folks, to each and every one of you!

And of course, thank you to the community! What a great RP community.

 You rock!

General Discussion / Update
« on: February 27, 2008, 04:09:01 pm »

Soon the canyons of isles once only seen on the horizon will close in around you, the steady breeze from a channeled and ancient wind pressing against your face.

And soon, you'll find why no ships sailed there before...

As the chittering of cunning foes echoes in the high cliffed forests around you...

And only passing moments of peace are found to admire what you've naught seen before.

Soon old enemies will take new forms.

And perhaps a few new tricks they'll have learned just like you...

You'll seek out their new domains with much wonder..

And perhaps... you will learn again to run...

And then run faster...

And yet faster....

Until you can no longer run.

I'll see you all in there soon enough.  Look for Dorg's big announcement!  Look for the new spells bursting in the air around you, the new monsters thundering towards you, the flicker of an unseen relic on the ground, and ever the expanding horizon of new lands.

:)Be careful out there folks.:o

Layonara Server / Module update coming soon!
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:00:12 pm »
That's right, you've heard me talk about it for months, and now, it's almost ready.  This update will require that you download some new files before you'll be able to get in-game:

layo_controlV3r3.hak  - Download and unpack this RAR file into your /hak subfolder under NWN

layonara_v20.tlk - Download and unpack this RAR file into your /tlk subfolder under NWN

Or download them from the Downloads page.

You can download and install these now without disturbing your game play.

I'm not going to say exactly when the update will happen, but it will be soon.

"On Wednesday evening, February 20th, the full Moon over the Americas will turn a delightful shade of red and possibly turquoise, too. It's a total lunar eclipse—the last one until Dec. 2010."

Read the full NASA - Total Lunar Eclipse article for more info.

To everyone who has the time and a camera, let's try and take pictures to post in our gallery for the non-Americas people to see as they're sort-of left out of the full experience.

Quests Ideas and Discussion / CR Modified Quest XP
« on: October 25, 2007, 01:04:32 am »
To get straight to the point - I think quest XP should work like combat, to some degree. I don't feel that epic level characters should continue to aspire to crazy levels by going on many quests targeted for lower level characters. I think that rather than a flat time-based XP amount doled out, whether it is level 30 characters attending an "open level" quest dealing with kobold persuasion or a level 2 character thrown into dealings way over his head in the planes and matters of gods, that there be a time-based XP modified by a predefined CR of the quest, by session if necessary depending on its contents.

Sometimes quests are non-combat and don't have a level limit, but skill DCs should not be raised on a mundane event simply because an epic character can do it with his eyes closed. Just like in many cases it doesn't make any sense to raise the challenge of combat because epics attend. I think sometimes (maybe even a lot of times) people attend quests solely because it is a guaranteed source of large XP. But think about it, does a level 20 character get any XP from a kobold? No? Then why should he get epic level XP for advancing his abilities, when just sitting around an inn passing DC 20 persuade checks and such things? Likewise, someone with 5 SC can't identify a disjunction and learn from it, it's over their heads.

I think that if one wants to keep progressing in their abilities, one should have to seek out challenges at their level. That is the way it works for creatures, and I think ideally it should be that way for quests as well. You need to be challenged to progress.

A helpful side effect of this might be encouraging more natural level limits.

For the record, I actually don't like OOC level limits on quests - low or high. After sampling quests from every DM on the team at the time I started questing, I settled mostly on those from World Quest GMs because I really loved being able to contribute even at a lower level than the target goal of the quests, which were epic in scope and combat difficulty. It's easier to quest up than down, but still in the event that low level characters attend World Quests for XP or epics attend quests "aimed" much lower for XP, they should be receiving less experience than if they had found a challenge near their level.

It's not just 'powergamers' or anything that go on quests for XP that they wouldn't otherwise... haven't you ever been in the middle of a quest someone nicely let you attend, only to feel kind of like a 5th wheel, knowing that if your character's abilities are respected, you'll break the plot and overshadow other characters, but if they're not it's not really fair and you just get demoted after all your work, and maybe if you weren't going to get several hours of quest XP you might give them some advice and wards and let them go on their way as you're honestly a little bored?

Or felt that way because you were surrounded by people so much more powerful than you talking about things way over your head that neither you nor your character can really help much with? Sometimes you go because you're genuinely interested and get involved and want to help in whatever way you can - and anyone of any level can contribute to just about anything, don't get me wrong - but other times you just stick it out silently because of the XP.

Is it not IC to realize a quest is not in your field or level of expertise in situations like the latter? I would never have dropped out of Angels' Tear, yet Acacea should probably have gotten less XP than others because much of the going ons were so far over her head. I would have kept going, because I loved the story and she was heavily involved and could contribute in other ways, but on the whole, it was not a challenge at her lower level, when she started. Later, in epic levels, there were lower level quests I would not have dropped out of for the same reasons, yet should not really have received full XP for, either, because of being above the challenge level instead.

The higher you go, the harder it is to find challenges. Should you get the same amount of XP running errands for mercenaries as you did for killing Bloodstone, just because the quest was the same length of time?

CR based quest xp, in this incarnation or the next. Get rewarded for using your abilities where it actually matters.

Just for Fun / Looting Policy
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:16:14 pm »
The riches gathered are for those most in need and those most in need are often those with the greatest desires.

The riches can be gathered by any and any quick enough to gather riches may do so.

Items not readily identified should be snatched and any item that fits in one's bag should be identified later in private.

Gnomes should have first choice and of course gnomes of the deep should always pick before those of the surface.

Gnomes of the deep are often quite worthy and yet Vin is most worthy of those deep gnomes.

Vin may choose what to reveal and the most choice items may very well stay in Vin's bag.

Vin will split gold evenly and of course basic rounding will often occur.

Items revealed by Vin may be rolled for and Vin may of course also roll for items revealed.

Items fairly won by Vin are often available and any who wish items Vin has won may often trade for fair quantities of gold.

Arguments should be avoided and disputes can often by settled by Vin.

Those accepting this policy are listed below and all that wish to adopt this policy may make it known by signing below.

I had a commission done for Plen, I just thought I'd share the result with the community.

I'm glad I'll always have this piece to remember where it all started, a big thank you to everyone who has shaped him along the way...

The artist is Carol Phillips, I discovered her work while I was doing research for the t-shirt web site and we have been working slowly over the last year to come up with something for Plen. I'm very happy with it :)

Roleplaying / Holy Pools and Deity Relations
« on: May 31, 2007, 02:36:22 am »
Hello all! I just wanted to drop this friendly reminder (and notification to some who may not be aware).

When creating Holy waters, please consider what holy pool you use carefully. The rule of thumb is using only pools that are friendly or better (friendly, ally or the actual character's temple). When using a temple not of your own faith, please look at the prospective god/ess' pool and make sure they are also of friendly or better relation to your own, elsewise they will most likely toss out your PC for desecrating their holy pool. For ease of usage, at the bottom of all deity descriptions there is a listing of status from the perspective of that deity, and they are linked so that you can check the other side of that coin as well.

Thanks and have fun RPing!

Roleplaying / Emote your heart out!!

Tired of trying to type in battle?  Tired of repeating your introduction to the umpteenth person?  I have the solution right here!

Those of you that have travelled with my PCs were probably thinking to yourself, "That fellow can type up a storm!"  While I can do that, I've added to my repetoire by taking advantage of this nifty software:  AutoHotkey - Free Mouse and Keyboard Macro Program with Hotkeys and AutoText.

This free bit of software allows you to write rather complicated hotkeys and macros.  The nice thing is that it can intercept the keystrokes before they reach your game.

Take my paladin of Vorax, Wanark.  He had a dozen or more short blessings that he'd say (some in dwarven) when just prior to casting bless or equipping his waraxe.  Then he had longer blessings that even included him kneeling.  Finally, he had the entire Vorax paladin credo he'd use when he visited the temple.  All of these I had assigned to hotkeys outside the game.  Brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?  Beautiful.

I'll give an example from my current PC that you can use to build your own set.  (Careful of line wrapping if you cut&paste into your own file.)

You can see that this can have as much flavor as you can think of.  It is especially handy during battle when all I have to do is type Ctrl-f for a fight emote.  (I even have it setup to fill in which weapon he is using to the emotes are correct.)

Good luck!

Layonara Server / Voice Command Tips
« on: November 19, 2005, 01:03:00 am »
I'm currently thinking of a way to give everyone the ability to create a Voice, as I know some Human and Half Elf classes don't get any Ears.  However, as long as there is an NPC, summon, or familiar around, no Voice is needed.

You can turn off listening to these emotes by selecting "Toggle *emote* Commands" using your Emote Wand.
