CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Crafting Feats
« on: January 27, 2006, 10:28:13 am »
Right, this has likely been brought up in previous discussions of this topic, or simply among the DM's themselves, but here's an idea if we choose to limit the number of crafts a person can participate in without completely cutting off those that want to be serious merchant/crafters (have more than two or three crafts they rank in):

Make each crafting discipline (tinkering, alchemy, etc) require a feat.  Have each character start off with two crafting feats at first level; that is, they have some proficiency or practice in two fields of crafting.  Then, those that want to pursue more crafting avenues may take the feats as they level to learn more crafts.  (and no, for those that read this and think fighters would have an advantage, they wouldn't, since the crafting feats would not count for a 'fighter bonus feat', meaning they could only be taken for character feats)

Advantages:

1) More interaction as crafters must find others who make the things they can't but still need to perform their own craft.

2) More "realistic" as those that excel in multiple crafting disciplines should have had to work for many, many years to develop all the skills.  This is represented by having to wait to take the feat every three levels if you want a access to a new craft.  In PnP, magical crafting uses similar restrictions.  You have to take different feats depending on whether you want to make wands, magic armor, etc.

3) Would slow the flood of goods to a small degree, but would also help determine when a market (like the bow market) is going to get flooded, as it can be seen just which are the 'popular' crafts quickly by how many people took the feats.  This should help to balance out each craft, as demand will dictate what people will consider learning as a craft.

4)  Masters will arise (not they they don't exist now, but many are more overall crafters rather than masters of a specific trade) in specific trade areas.  Apprenticeships will make more sense as the character may not already know a craft, but can RP with a master, justifying taking the new crafting feat.

Disadvantages:

1)  Those that already have many ranks in five or more crafts either get stilted and lose their work, or gain a feat advantage over new characters.  This alone is enough to thwart this idea.

2)  Character feats are expensive.  Even spending just one on a crafting feat severely limits the directions your character can go mechanically.  This can also be listed as an advantage, however, in that it discourages characters from leveling in seven or eight different crafts, forcing them to interact with and buy from other characters, keeping the economy in constant motion.

3) I have no clue how much scripting this would involve and how hard it's implementation would be in that regard.

There may be more advantages/disadvantages than I listed here.  Feel free to voice them.  I'm sure you already planned to.  ;-)

Just an idea.

General Discussion / lookin' for a little help.
« on: December 21, 2005, 07:20:00 am »
Okay, in light of Cole's emminant final meeting with the soul mother, there is a new character up and coming from me that is currently still being fleshed out.  There are hints about who this character will be and his relationship to Cole in Cole's Dev thread.  (it's rough and ugly, but I can't dive into too much detail as I haven't figured all of the detail out, heh)

Now, what I need help with is this:  a portrait.  I've spent, oh, I don't know, in excess of 6 hours digging through my excessive number of portraits as well as the NWN vault.  I've found a few that could work for the character, but none that strike me as "him."  So, here's what you have to work off of if you want to help me:

1)the character is going to be dark, but not midnight dark;

2)he is quiet.  think Jennara, but without the whispering.  Yeah, that quiet...;

3)hair color, skin color, eye color, are all up for grabs;

4)He's stronger than he is dexterous, but not by much, and he's a fighter type;

5)I'd prefer a face shot, but a full body shot could work.  And it would help if the portrait would work with one of the heads for the IG character, obviously.

If anyone out there thinks they have something that could work, please oh please PM me or email it to me at miltonyorkcastle@yahoo.com.  I'm stuck on the rest of his development until I have an idea of what he "looks" like.

Again, thanks for any time you have to help me with this!

To the fine mercenaries of the Dread Blade:

Your commander and chief, Cole Norseman, has a personal matter to attend to.  As such, the general meeting of the Blade is cancelled for this month (///week, RL///), this Threas (///thurs, Nov. 24th, RL///).  You are encouraged to meet amongst yourselves and to complete your own contracts, as well as secure new contracts for the Dread Blade.

May your swords stay sharp!

General Discussion / Riddick
« on: November 18, 2005, 07:44:00 am »
Question: for those that are familiar with the character of Riddick (Pitch Black, Dark Fury, Chronicles of Riddick), what would you say his alignment is, if described in DnD terms?

I am torn, as I keep finding ways to justify a slew of different alignments.  so let me know what you think and why, and maybe I'll make up my mind.   ;)

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / enchant rods can be placed on what?

*Cole wanders into the Great library, as he does on occasion and starts looking through the directory.  After a while, he moseys over to a pile of books and starts going through them*

not sure if this has been asked before, so I'll ask here:

Can you place an enchantment rod that adds elemental resistance to other items beside armor, such as rings, gloves, helms, etc.?  and can you enchant those items without losing any current magical properties on said item?  I understand magical reisitances don't stack, and the same with magical damages, but say, if I had a Ring of Bull's I, and I stuck an Enchant Rod of electric resist on it, would it even work, and if it did, would it destroy the current property of +1 strength?

General Discussion / To any interested in a good ole game of PnP DnD...
« on: September 29, 2005, 08:47:00 pm »
I have a good friend and Very good DM wanting to run a little online PnP version 3.5 DnD game.  Haven't set the dates, times, etc, but otherwise I can get you hooked up with the rest of the info.  There is at least one open slot available, possibly two.  Also, we are in the CST timezone.  It's essentially tabletop DnD over a messenger format, using a program called OpenRPG (unless I convince him to do a voice-over using Skype).  Questions and comments post below or PM me, miltonyorkcastle.

General Discussion / NWN Pics to .jpg or other easier to read formats
« on: September 02, 2005, 09:09:00 am »
yeah, so, I see many have their char pics as their pic for the forums, and I was wondering, how do I convert (what software do I need) the NWN picture format (can't recall its extension right now and not on my own pc to check) into a .jpg or something equally as readable by picture viewing software?

*in large script*

This is an invitation to all the freeblades, to all the mercenaries, to all the ex-soldiers, and to anyone else interested in search of a fitting occupation, steady pay, and excellent equipment.

My name is Cole Norseman.  I am a well-known, well-traveled mercenary.  I have military experience under Queen Allurial and am considered one of the best Greatsword wielders in all the lands.  I have connections that span continents and the knowledge to prove it.

My aim is this:  To form a mercenary army unit under my command.  The army of the Norseman.  The Dread Blade.

The pay will be per month, in gold, to be distributed at the monthly gathering.(///actually weekly, just that a week of Real time is so much more in game time.  not even really equivelent to a month, but it makes it easier///)
300 for regulars (//privates//)
325 for file leaders (///private first class///)
400 for lieutenants and seargents
500 for captains

In addition, all soldiers will be outfitted with Iron equipment and magical rings will be given for promotions or outstanding accomplishments.

Currently, every rank is available, to be determined by field drills.  Experience does not necessarily give you preference.  I will watch the drills and determine for myself who is best to lead each Cohort (///unit, platoon, etc///).

There will be four captains under me, at least for now.  One captain over a Cohort of Archers, one captain over a Cohort of shieldmen, one captain over a Cohort of shocktroops, and one captain over a Cohort of support troops, which include battle mages and war priests.  Each Captain will have two Lieutenants, and there will be a seargent for every three files.  A file is no more than ten regulars.

Race, background, gender, and faith will have no impact on your enrollment or advancement.  Your actions within the unit will determine your status, and, of course, I will always have final say.

As a mercenary unit, our work is on a contract basis.  We will discuss each contract at the monthly (///weekly///) meetings, and each Cohort will be assigned responsibilities according to the nature of the contracts.  Most contracts will not be to fight in wars across the seas.  Most contracts will involve protection, escort, and provision.  On occasion the unit will be called upon to lay sieges.

Monthly meetings occur on Wedlars (//wednesdays//) in the campgrounds outside Leilon.  The first meeting is this coming Wedlar and will hold the trials for those interested in becoming an officer, as well as the issue of equipment and cohort assignments.  It is assumed that all who show are enlisting.

The Color standard is Red and Black.

/////check the Calendar, the time will be at 9pm PST/////

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / The Dread Blade
« on: August 31, 2005, 09:55:00 pm »
Not really sure if this is where I post this, but I would like to start a guild (rather Cole would, but you get the idea).  It would be a mercenary guild, the purpose of which is to bring hired swords and freeblades together under one banner.  In other words, to gather all of the most bloodthirsty fellows and gals and form an army of sorts, with a chain of command and a loose code.  The name would be The Dread Blade.

Errr, yeah, so tell me what I need to do, etc....

Thanks for your time!

General Discussion / Weapon of Choice

Being that Cole's favored weapon is the Greatsword, I decided to do a little resarch on the subject.  I found this little treatise:

Turns out, the Greatsword is the weapon of choice for mercenaries.  *grins*

Wild Surge Inn / The Resource Store
« on: August 09, 2005, 05:31:00 pm »
*a very large poster has been erected inside inns and taverns across Mistone*

At the suggestion of a woman named Amber, I have thought out a profitable and convenient solution to arduous task of collecting resources for your crafts.  I am interested in having a store opened that will buy and sell resources.  That is, beings like Klugger and I, Cole Norseman, who harvest resources for crafters, would have a single place to sell all of the different items gathered instead of having to find an assortment of different buyers and fill each individual order.  This store would then turn around and sell the resources that we sold it to the crafters at a, shall we say, 5-10% cost increase.  The upside to this is the convenience of being able to sell anything you gather at one convenient location, and crafters in turn can buy everything they need in one place rather than having to gather some stuff here, buy stuff there, etc.  The down side is that it creates a middle man, and will inflate the prices of resources to a degree.  However, I think the benefits outway the- what I believe will be a- minor price increase.

In order for this to happen, and as I am not actually interested in running such a store- I simply want the benefits of it- a meeting of crafters, gatherers, and businessmen alike must be set up to discuss who, what, when, etc.  Ideally, there wouldn't just be one store, but many, so that the availability of an assortment of resources in any given town is at least a 50% chance at any given time.  Really, anyone with a house and the storage space can act as a resource store on their own, buying and selling and opening and closing at their own fancy.

So, any and all those interested in such a scheme, notify me, Cole Norseman, of a good time for you to meet with a conglomerate of others who share this interest.  The meeting place will probably be held in the basement of the Wild Surge in Hlint, unless I can convince the Hlint authorities to let us use the courthouse.  When a time has been determined, letters will be mailed and notification put up in the major taverns and inns around Mistone.  ////check the player calendar////

General Discussion / Stunning Fist
« on: July 29, 2005, 10:02:00 pm »
If I recall, Stunning fist is supposed to stun for one round.  I am quite positive that the stun duration of the stunning fist that the desert giants on Dregar hit with lasts longer than one round.  Is this on purpose?  or am I completely wrong about the duration of stunning fist attacks?  or is this an issue that can't be helped?  Thanks for your time!

Take this for what you will and if this has been previously disceussed elsewhere in the forums I apologize.

Suggestion:  A simple way to reduce the number of strange (Wemic) and/or typically evil races among the adventurer population is to use a similar restriction to what has been done with Chaotic Neutral characters.  That is, keep all races except for the 'standard' (human, high/moon elf, hill dwarf, halfling, rock gnome, half-elf, half-orc) races restricted to those players who have had a standard race character and been an active part of the world (playing on the server) for at least 4 months.

This will not only help slow the population growth of evil races among adventurers, but ensure that those that do play them are familiar with recent events in the world and should be good at RPing those races.  Also, while some will complain about not being able to play their really cool Drow ftr/sorc/arcane archer idea, once they spend time with the human wizard they had to settle for instead, I guarantee that if they stay the four months they will have become completely attached to that character.  They may go ahead and get that cool Drow, but they will still spend time playing their first character, siginicantly cutting down on how often we see that Drow.

I DM PnP DnD, and I for one do not allow gamers who are new to my campaigns (i.e. I've just met) play anything other than the standard races.  It's not until after I have seen them RP that I allow them to play other races, particularly because of how much more difficult they are to RP.

Alright, that's all for now.  Let me know what you think.
