General Discussion / Rumors -- Please read
« on: October 27, 2007, 07:00:18 pm »
The following is addressed to the entire Layonara community.  It is not directed at one person or any specific group of people. Please read it and understand it.

As a recent post has highlighted, there have been some ugly and hurtful rumors flying around recently. This kind of thing, though different people and different circumstances, seem to happen on a regular basis. Sometimes the target is one person, other times it's a group of people.  There are back-channel whispers, finger-pointing, and accusations flying around.  The GM Team gets reports of this-and-that but rarely does anyone have the evidence or guts to back up the claims. Some rumors fade, but there are always some waiting to take their place.  It's a continuous cycle, and it is getting really, really old.

I urge everyone to hear what I'm saying here and take it to heart.  Rumors are almost without fail caustic and poisonous to the community.  You may interact with electronic representations, seeing only words and artificial avatars, but there are people behind those things.  Real people.  Not all rumors are false, but most rumors are not nearly as true as some would believe them to be. Whatever the case, they're bad...bad for those who spread them, bad for those who are the targets of them, and bad for this community.

Without going into specifics, the most recent batch of rumors ranges from annoying to very serious with implications that stretch beyond this little community of ours.  And so I ask you all...

If you are involved in spreading such rumors, stop. If you have proof, then present it to a Gm.  If not, then stop. You're hurting people and you're hurting this community.

If you are engaged in activities in the game world/forums/IRC channel(s) that are the center of one or more of these rumors and those activities are contrary to what we have established here, stop.

If you are involved in or complicit in sewing the seeds of discord among all or part of the community, stop.

At this point, I am not overly concerned with what the "facts" may be in the case of the most recent events. There will forever be three sides to every story: "Yours, mine and the truth."  Since the last is often difficult to obtain, we're left with the word of one against the word of another.  As I said, it just needs to stop.

I want everyone to realize that these things are harmful, and they affect more people than just those at the muddy end of the stick.

In the thread about Layonara's future, there's a comment in there about the NWN servers and how long they'll stay up.  To quote Leanthar:

Quote
The NwN servers will stay up and running until it either a) gets to expensive for me to keep it running, so keep donating as this is important for NwN or b) the world or community becomes to much of a hassle in terms of time, effort, or headaches for the servers to stay online or c) we make it to beta testing of the new product which is still a ways away. Layonara is not going away, nor is it fading away; but much rests on the communities shoulders for how long the NwN servers remain online.
It is petty and dramatic things like rumors that are most likely to bring down the Layonara NWN community.  This kind of thing really drains the GM Team and Leanthar himself. It is frustrating, mentally exhausting and time-consuming. In some cases, it has taken hours of research and checking in on people, logs, actions, reports and so forth just to prove or disprove the allegations...time wasted and time not spent interacting with the community.

I don't want this to sound like a threat, but the fact of the matter is, there have been times, more than most of you realize, where the fate of the NWN servers has been close to a complete shut-down because of petty bickering, factional rumors and divisive words and actions.

It all needs to stop, people. I can't stress that enough.

Now, please...understand what I have written here.  Read it over, again if you need to, and really see what I am saying.  And then just think about it and remember it.

And also, please understand that when we take action as a result of things that go on here, be it a banning, a reprimand or some other kind of administrative action, that we do not do so lightly or on a whim. We are not targeting individuals because we don't like them or because we just feel like it.  The GM Team has, among its many duties, an obligation to protect this community.  It comes along with the job, and whatever people may believe, it is not a particularly enjoyable part of the job to ban someone who is acting contrary to the spirit of this community.

I do not really wish for this to become a discussion.  I don't want current or past rumors brought up here and presented with explanations, accusations or justifications.  I don't want people to post their opinions on the situation, be it the one most immediately at hand or any number of such things that have occurred.  Do not use this thread to confess or confirm.  I do not seek a string of "I agree" posts, nor do I particularly want any "Thanks" either.

I want people to read this and understand it.

I know a lot of people love this community and have developed very real and lasting real-life friendships as a result.  Keep that in mind please in all your future actions. Friendships are not formed of bickering and rumormongering. They're formed of a commonality of purpose and philosophy.  If you find, however, that you cannot continue to be a supportive and positive influence in this community, then consider stepping away from it before you contribute to events that may end up hurting those you call friends.

I generally have a lot of faith and respect for this community as a whole.  I sincerely hope that is not misplaced.

Regards,
Dorganath

Just for Fun / World Leader Application: Squishy

New World Leader Application: Squishy

  Name: “Squishy” Kuala’shtus Mela’fulumus
Translation: Deep Eye of Immanent Doom; a common beholder name
  Original Submission: See Rhynn’s CDQ
Character Development Threads: Squishy has no hands and therefore can not write. Occasionally he has been known to use telekinetic power to balance a pencil, or dictate to Rhynn, Saru, or the Lim Lim. However thus far, nothing has occurred, because two of the three can not write, and Rhynn either thinks its cute and hugs him or at times, obliges to which excerpts such as the following occur.

Floobar Kelleboots Oggitama Rhynnykins Kelleboots Oggar Gloofo Floog Flog Ohhhbarbarbarbarbarbar Kelleboots

  Story

Squishy began his life, as a below average beholderkin, at the bottom rung in the treacherous hives of the beholder; after all someone must be at the bottom. This was, unfortunately Squishy’s lot in life. Yet in the face, of upmost despair, everyone must have hope.
And so, within this normally mild and timid eyeball, after years of abuse by his larger, smarter and simply stronger kin, something finally broke. He went spare. The madness that he embraced was not of the ‘froth at the mouth’ every day manor. It was, instead of religious hysteria.  This was unfortunate. He began to rave and rant about a time of great pain, followed by the promised one, who would lead all beholderkin to a time of equality and power where they would take control of great soaves of the surface lands.
As with any society, especially in the highly xenophobic clans of the beholder, anyone whom decides to go against common convention, especially based off religion, would soon find themselves either banished or killed.
And so, before either of those two things could happen, Squishy begun his long flights into the deepening darks of the underworld. Being at this point at best, only mildly connected to the commonly accepted reality of the sane it is unknown how long Squishy wandered the tunnels, jibbering out his prophetic visions of a better tomorrow.  However his wanderings in the deep would take him once again into what he knows as the time of pain.
He would stumble across Deep dwarf slavers, who found him both harmless and hilariously amusing, something to throw around, punt with a stick and in general make even more miserable.
They would loose their favorite ball quite swiftly when it fled directly into the hands of a group of half orc slavers during a pitched melee in a dispute about wages. This would continue Squishy’s time of pain, the orcs thought that the Deep Dwarves had the right idea, and proceeded to use this small eyeball as their favorite throwing object.
All the blows to his head must have continued to deteriorate what little sanity he may have had. As he began to rave to himself more and more about the time of pain soon being over and the Great One leading him to his destiny, some strange luck occurred. This came within a years time.
When the half orc seriously underestimated one of their latest torturing victims. Having witnessed her cast such miracles as ‘crawling out of her own form’ , defeating the Wicked Ones, and helping release him from The Time of Pain, he began his new life, as the first and only prophet of his idol of worship: Rhynnykins

It is still assumed that he has suffered one too many blows to the head, and now spends his days , wandering while following her and raving about the beginning of his new order dedicated to the greatness of the one who rescued him from the time of pain, and her offspring, which he views, as a sacred child, or mayhaps just a follower.

Accomplishments

The Slaying Of The Primal Water Elemental – It was a dark return to the underworld and squishy was determined to locate a beholder clan and bring them the great news of his religion and its growth although he still wasn’t certain about all the details.  However determined, the Squishy was taken aback to see the one that brought him from the Time of Pain into the Time of Whatever This Time Is Now (once again it is stressed that he has not quite figured out what he is doing) being attacked by a giant moving wall of water. Which he promptly attacked with all his small globular might. It was apparently enough.

The squishy is worthy of World leader not just because of his ability to slay such things as a primal water elemental; that would be powergaming. He is also worthy because of his ability to befriend and successfully travel with noteworthy heroes; and accomplishment few creatures as supposedly ‘evil’ as he , could ever dream of doing.

Furthermore, he would like to take a moment to explain in his own words, how he has repeatedly assured the success of all adventures and quest that succeeded in his presence.

Future Development As World Leader

It is not entirely certain of what Squishy’s true goals may be. This is because they have changed on average once every half hour for the past years. However, it can be considered the overall goal of the Squishy to unite the beholderkin under his new beliefs. If successful, he will indeed unite them, underneath the concepts of equality for all eyeball kin, under the teachings and examples of the one idol….As soon as he figures out exactly what these teachings are.

Roleplaying / Dangers of soloing
« on: July 12, 2007, 06:30:13 pm »
I want to make a friendly reminder and open some discussion on the topic of soloing.  What I have observed is that some soloing is ok.  If you solo gathering a common CNR in a place that is not too difficult, then no one seems to care.  On the other hand, when a player solos areas to farm large amount of XP, or rare items and CNRs, then it is not only frowned upon, but it also can have sever negative impacts on other players.

I remember a player that would solo the rift.  He would gather the CNR there and was selling many.  What happened was that the rift was made harder.  Then parties of un-expecting adventures would get wiped out because of these changes.  Some times, a power built character can be so good and defeating spawns, that areas that areas are made too dangerous for balanced parties that once hunted there, and the party level balance goes up.  So what a balanced party of 15th level characters once handled, now the party has to be more like 18+.

What I am asking...  Is that the players who like to solo difficult areas take some time and reflect about how the actions of one individual, can and will impact the enjoyment of everyone else that plays in this game world.

General Discussion / Enjoy Everyday
« on: June 22, 2007, 06:32:48 pm »
I write this with a heavy heart.

A good friend of mine died yesterday.  He was 40 years old, had three children 18, 7 and 3.  He was going through security to get on a flight to go and spend a weekend in Las Vegas and dropped dead from a brain anuerism in the security line.

I write this, well, to remind everyone that what you do everyday should be precious.

Hug your children.  Kiss your wife or husband.  Tell your parents you love them.  Pet a dog.  Look at nature and revel in it's beauty.  Give a beggar a dollar.  Make the world a better place, somehow, even if it's just your small slice of it. And don't let petty   stuff overwhelm you. See the beauty in life, and contribute to it.

It seems to me that we never know when we have nine soul strands lost, and the next one is the last.

Spread Joy, Happiness, and Love,

Nathan

Introduce Yourself / silverdraco
« on: May 29, 2007, 06:31:23 am »
Oke so most of you have tolled something about yourselves so now i think it's my turn.

Most of you will know me as Sonya Darsus, but I started on this server with a half orc male named Elessar Séralondië. I have stoped playing Elessar because of problems with fighting. Half orcs are melee fighters and Elessar was a ranged fighter. Not that good a combo, for me anyway.

I started sonya because I wanted to get that cool pale master class and so I made a background good enought for that. RP with her and others have made her change from that path. For now anyway. ;)

I'm also working on a new character and she has her own dairy on the forums her name will be Sarah and is the daughter of Sonya Darsus. Some idea's I got for her are still a secret to everyone but me. ;) I just hope those will be interesting enought to get people to play with her.

now about myself.

The first server I learned about RP was one that was a mix of RP players and fast lvl-up players or what ever you would call those.

I came to layonara after seeing some add on the NWN website. In layo I found out I like to rp alot. Even thought I'd love to get Sonya lvl-up faster than she does now. But thanks to RP-ing with some of you guys I haven't become a power player or whatever the name is you use.

I live in the land of chees, windmales, Black candy called "drop"and wooden shoes called "Klompen. yes I live in the Netherlands or Holland. My name is Raymond and if some of you haven't noticed yet don't be alarmed or whatever when I say I'm male and not female like sonya is. I don't know but for some reason I like playing women. Must me be the attention the tend to get or something, I don't know. :\\

I thought of working on a male character again but with sonya already in play and Sarah comming to. I don't think I will have that much time to play three characters. Unless I get on other copy of nwn and play on two PC's at the same time. ;) :D

If you got any questions just ask, asking is for free. ;)

Silverdraco.

General Discussion / Just a Thanks to Dorg
« on: May 27, 2007, 12:33:31 am »
I wanted to say thanks to Dorg for taking the time to change my character's name and description and doing all that jazz :) Really, it's great that a person is willing to go through and do all that for another, and I just wanted to say it's appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to fix or change or reimburse each person/character that requires it :)

Character Submissions / Evil Character Bio Descriptions
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:22:39 am »
I am surprised I am having to type this but after five years of doing this I suppose I shouldn't be suprised.

I want everybody to keep in mind the server and the community when they are submitting an evil aligned character. This is a family server and as such young adults and in some cases children may be reading these submissions. There is no reason to get graphic or gruesome on the submissions, none at all. There are multiple ways to get around the "need" of writing graphic details in a character submission, just use your head and a little common sense and you will figure out a way.

I do not want to see the graphic descirptions in submissions any more, they are unacceptable. If we continue to see them evil aligned character will once again be removed from the world.

 Thank you.

General Discussion / Partying: a personal request
« on: April 04, 2007, 06:31:38 pm »
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced this:

You invite someone, or someone invites you into a party. Someone else wanders by, initiates conversation, inquires as to your purpose, and joins the party. You are about to set off to smack things. Suddenly, and without warning, another face appears on your sidebar... you mouse over their portrait, and see that they're on another continent . . . Strange. . . . And then, another person is added and another.  More people join (none of whom are actually present) until the entire population of Layonara is in a single party!  All of a sudden, everyone has a reason to wait before setting out, "One minute, it is vital that I stare at my navel before heading into battle." Lo and behold, all those little faces in the party bar just happen to wander by, having the urge to kill the same things at the same time at the same place.Funny how that works.

Seriously though, there is a big difference between:

Me: This is a strong foe we aim to battle. Perhaps I should send a bird to Lady Pwnsalot, to see if she would be interested in joining us.
Other Person: Indeed, her sword would be welcome!
Me: *summons a falcon and writes on some parchment*
[Tell] Falcon message: Myself and a few others aim to slay the fearsome rats in the sewers, but we cannot do it alone, would you care to join us?
[Tell from Lady Pwnsalot]: Verily! I would never turn down such an opportunity, I shall be there forthwith!
*invite Lady Pwnsalot*
Me: *Receives a not from a bird, reads it and nods sagely* She will be here to aid us as fast as her legs can carry her.

And:

[Tell]:Hey, wanna come kill some stuff with us?
[Tell from Lady Pwnsalot]: Sure, I'm in Allindor, just wait there for me, ok?
[Tell] n/p
*invite Lady Pwnsalot*

There are plenty of legitimate reasons why one might invite someone who isn't there at the moment, but please have the grace to ask the rest of the party members, and at least make an attempt to have some RP justification. Too often, this kind of thing just spirals out of control (although my initial description may be a tad exaggerated ;)). I know I'm not the only one who prefers small parties, so please try to remember when everyone wants their friend to come along, it can ruin things for many of us. If you want to have large parties that can run roughshod over anything, there are plenty of people who enjoy that too, but to make every gathering like that is disrespectful to the rest of us, in my opinion. It really doesn't take much imagination to invite people in an RP appropriate way that allows the group to have their input. Maybe character A will refuse to travel if character B  goes along. Maybe Character A is shy and doesn't want to fight with people he doesn't know. And maybe some of us just have OOC preferences, and feel left out when people are invited without some IC dialogue. A little bit of communication and courtesy go a long way.  Thanks.

*I hope this doesn't sound too whiny and ranty, as the title says this is just a personal request, based on my own play style, and I realize not everyone is going to agree with me here*

Introduce Yourself / Its Scifibarbie!!!!
« on: March 17, 2007, 06:43:45 pm »
People HI!

You may know me in game as Grena Rockbasher, Erk and former miss Hlint Mistone....Sa'kura Firesteed (the pink lion).

As far as the scifibarbie goes...funny story that. My roomie always said I was such a barbie. I even had a cute little barbie car for awhile. I tried getting something cute for an email nad various logins, but they were all taken. My friend suggested scifibarbie since I was and am an avid scifi geek (can you say MST3k). And yes, star wars rules!!!

My current best bud says I need to be a viking like her, both of us being tall blonde and bad-*%$#. Her words. :)

My current profession is full time student at Midwest College of Oriental Medicine studying to be an Acupuncturist. Yes I am going to be sticking needles in people and doling out chinese herbs for all sorts of wonderful and various ailments.

My favorite hobby is a fun past-time called Kendo. Ive been practicing for about 15 years and love it. I am an avid martial artist and my training also includes jiu-jutsu and iaido. So dont mess with me!   :)

I first discovered D & D while serving in the Army and and played the PnP fora  couple of years. I didnt start playing the computer version until NWN came out and my roomie at the time got me hooked. She later got addicted to Evercrack. Somethin I never understood or condoned. I mean how could someone get hooked on a videogame.
Yes Im being fascetious (did I spell that right?), since I highly enjoy Layonara. And just cause I play alot, doesnt mean i have a problem. I dont have an addiction to Layo...really...you believe me dont you? No!! You cant take my computer away, I dont have a problem, just leave me alone!!!! Oh yeah, its my first online RPG too.

Sorry if this post is abit chaotic, Im just perpetually hyper and have the mindset of a 12 yearold (at least thats what people tell me)...just a bit more responsible...sortof.....

So thats it. Questions? Comments? Words of wisdom?
No?
Then have a nice day.

Introduce Yourself / Who's your granny?
« on: March 13, 2007, 09:12:40 am »
Hello, I'm Martha--Granny, bonsai artist, Layo addict.

I think I would be the oldest person playing on Layonara (at 63), except that my husband is even older than I am.  I have two grandchildren whom I also introduced to Layo.  They even play in game with me sometimes.  The third one is still learning her alphabet, but give her a few years and she'll be here.

I have about a hundred bonsai trees in various stages of neglect from playing here too much.  My game name, Serissa, is the name of a small tropical tree with tiny white flowers that is often used for bonsai.  It stinks when you cut it and drops dead if you look at it cross-eyed.  Seems appropriate!

I started reading science fiction in about sixth grade (when I discovered my dad's stash), and discovered fantasy somewhat later when I gulped down LOTR in one looong weekend.  I've been hooked ever since.

I discovered role-playing games when my son was in junior high, becoming DM for him and his friends.  That was when D&D was being touted as dangerous to our youth--a few idiots got hurt acting it out in real life.  He grew up and went on to other things.  (I don't know where I failed him.)  I stayed hooked, playing nearly every computer RP game that came along.  I moved to on-line worlds about five years ago and discovered Layo a couple of years ago.  Haven't gone anywhere else since.

I grew up mostly in Texas, but have also lived in Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana and New Jersey.  I've been living in West Virginia for nearly forty years, and it's the best.  There are woods right outside my back door, but it's only a ten minute walk to the store if I'm really in a hurry.  There are great places for hiking and camping all over the place, and the scenery is wonderful.  I've been to most of our western states and Hawaii, and to Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, and even Tahiti, but this is the place I love most (except for Layo, of course).

I love to cook.  I even bake our bread and make my own soup stocks.  The best part is that my husband usually cleans up after me.  I love being retired--the only alarm clock I set is to get up in time for a Layo quest.  Considering all the dumb things I've done, I'm proud to have made it to age 63, and love being the age I am.

I hope to meet you in game and have lots of fun!

Serissa
