Ask A Gamemaster / Keeping Bird Messengers In Character
« on: February 29, 2008, 03:16:29 pm »
Hi all,

While working on updating the LORE documentation, we wanted to establish the process that actually happens in character when using the Bird Messaging system.

There is no absolute process that using the bird messengers from LORE equates to in game.  Druids or rangers may be able to personally communicate with a bird to help them send their message.  Other players may like to roleplay it as going to the inn to use their messenger service, the inns of course use birds.  Others may play it as a local postman who gathers messages and then distributes them via bird.  Even still, others have played it as though they have their own personal bird at their beckon all the time (which might be a little far fetched unless you're Plen :P).

Point is to try to keep the LORE Bird Messengers in character of course.  Ask yourself if sending the message from where your character is makes sense.  Think about the time it would take to send the message based on the distance to the recipient.

We're not going to be sticky here because the Bird Messaging system is just as much an OOC benefit as it is an IC.  We know there's no way to stop you folks from communicating externally to coordinate meetings or such, the messaging system was just a way to provide a means to play it out IC.

With that said, be wary of your usage of communicating by bird during a GM quest.  While mechanically your message may be received by the recipient in as little as 5 minutes provided he/she is out in open air, a GM will typically not accept that reality.

Rumour Has It / Renewed prosperity
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:11:27 pm »
Merchants who pass through north-central Mistone start bringing back stories of trade and workings from the town of Hlint. Though none of the rumors suggest the once-bustling town has returned to its former glory, at least some of the economic depression brought on by the Dark Ages has finally subsided.  There's talk once more of a permanent merchant presence and even rumors that the old smithy, which fell into disrepair nearly two decades ago, has been reopened.

Of course, rumors being what they are, usually need to be seen in order to be believed.

General Discussion / Update
« on: February 27, 2008, 04:09:01 pm »

Soon the canyons of isles once only seen on the horizon will close in around you, the steady breeze from a channeled and ancient wind pressing against your face.

And soon, you'll find why no ships sailed there before...

As the chittering of cunning foes echoes in the high cliffed forests around you...

And only passing moments of peace are found to admire what you've naught seen before.

Soon old enemies will take new forms.

And perhaps a few new tricks they'll have learned just like you...

You'll seek out their new domains with much wonder..

And perhaps... you will learn again to run...

And then run faster...

And yet faster....

Until you can no longer run.

I'll see you all in there soon enough.  Look for Dorg's big announcement!  Look for the new spells bursting in the air around you, the new monsters thundering towards you, the flicker of an unseen relic on the ground, and ever the expanding horizon of new lands.

:)Be careful out there folks.:o

Layonara Server / Module update coming soon!
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:00:12 pm »
That's right, you've heard me talk about it for months, and now, it's almost ready.  This update will require that you download some new files before you'll be able to get in-game:

layo_controlV3r3.hak  - Download and unpack this RAR file into your /hak subfolder under NWN

layonara_v20.tlk - Download and unpack this RAR file into your /tlk subfolder under NWN

Or download them from the Downloads page.

You can download and install these now without disturbing your game play.

I'm not going to say exactly when the update will happen, but it will be soon.

Hall of Heroes and Heroines / The End of an Era.
« on: February 24, 2008, 09:11:15 am »
* Kobal arrives at Leringard by boat. From there he travels south, ever south, until he reaches Brenuth and lastly visits King Ulgrid in his great halls. He travels slowly, visiting each hamlet, village and town along the way - taking his time.

To onlookers it seems much like a pilgrimmage in honour of somebody or something, for the dwarf is often seen with slumped shoulders, making a sad face.

-------------------------------

As he visits, Kobal relates a tale - a tale of epic proportions. At it's centre is another dwarf, the Warlord of Bloody Gate, Varka Cleaveson. The tale starts out when Varka set out to remove the upstart tyrant Gunderforn and reinstated the true King Rory Rockfist. Hereby he, alongside trusted friends, ensured peace and prosperity for the Bloody Gate for any years to come.
Never truly satisfied with his work and ever striving to live up to the legends of his ancestors, Varka strived to strengthen the Gate, so that it would ever be a safe haven to the people he loved. Therefore he worked hard to organize the defences and train new warriors to replace those who had perished in battle against Gunderforn and the troops of Milara sent to bolster his ranks within the city.

As this was accomplished, King Rockfist offered a last task to Varka - to seek and secure the 'Triqueta of Gates'. A relic of myths, the Triqueta was the symbol of the strength of the three gates into the city. Said to be made from the fusing together of the three keys originally made for deh three first gates into the Bloody Gate, the myth says that it was suspended over the King's throne as a warning that one of the King's sacred responsibilities was to tend to the gates of the city. This was because the three gates were the prime defence against any enemy that would seek to enter the Bloody Gate. A common saying in the Boody Gate goes: "The only way into the Gate is through the King".

An aspiring priest blessed with a vision from Vorax had recognized the truth of the myth and knew it's worth to the Bloody Gate. So he spoke to King Rockfist of his vision, who then sent for his most trusted and loyal warrior, Varka Cleaveson. Together with friends he set out to the depths below the mountains, seeking passages not used by dwarfkin for generations.

Following words of an ancient scroll that described how the King's nephew foolishly had stolen the Triqueta in a fit of rage and jealousy and fled into the lower dungeons, the party set out to reclaim what had been lost so many years ago.

Far below ground, within a hive of ghastly enemies the treacherous young dwarf was discovered along with the Triqueta. Cursed by Vorax for his deed, the dwarf had been turned to stone and the Triqueta wrapped in a magical field that protected it from the hands of the unworthy.
The cursed soul, however, had left something behind for those seeking to reclaim his prize. A scroll case held information that showed that he had regretted his deed and defended it until his end. It had been his final act to invoke a prayer to Vorax and ask him to protect what he had foolishly risked. So he was cursed and his soul tied to the Triqueta. It was discovered that to reclaim the Triqueta for the King and the Bloody Gate, another would have to take his burden. The price of past pride would need to be paid anew.

It was then that the warlord stepped forward and made his intentions known. He made his goodbyes to his friends that had fought at his side for so many years and had aided him in his quests for the Bloody Gate. Then, without blinking, Varka Cleaveson stepped forward and clasped the crystal that encased the Triqueta. He uttered a prayer to Vorax:

"The boundaries of time are come undone, I stand in the gateway between two worlds, Hear me through the veil that hides you from my sight, Help me through this day, Watch me. Shelter me. I am your child!"

These words were his last, for as they were uttered, the curse was released and Varka turned to stone. The Triqueta was freed and returned to hower in suspension above the King's throne, while the statue of Varka Cleaveson was carried back up to the Bloody Gate where it now adorns the throne room as a constant reminder of Varka's sacrifice to the people he loved.

This is his tale. *

Rumour Has It / 'Having to Let Go'
« on: February 10, 2008, 03:32:38 pm »
*Word comes from the Temple of Kithairien that a man named, Lance Coyle, brought his deceased wife and devoted follower of the Runner, Randi 'Tyyne' Coyle, into the temple tightly embraced in his arms to be laid to rest. He was followed by a fellow name 'Bear' and his future wife, Abigail.

Randi was laid at the temple for her final visit where those present paid their last respects and said goodbye to a wife and friend. Her body was draped with a Kithairien flag that was carried by Lance.

In honor of the Randi's last wishes and the ways of Kithairien, she will be cremated upon a wooded altar and her remains scattered by the winds. The location of the ceremony is only known by her husand and immediate family.*

Rumour Has It / The Mark of True Love (aka: a shovel to the head)
« on: February 06, 2008, 09:23:51 pm »
Gods...what has miss Grenna started.

The whole shovel in the head story is that it is a dwarven tradition! At least of the Rockbasher clans before they fell. Though dwarfs being dwarfs, it very well may have spread amongst other clans from the Rockbashers. Or possibly even have been from a far older tradition amongst the dwarfen nation and just finally written down into Rockbasher clan lore at that particular time in the their history.

The women would whack their men over the head with a shovel when they were least expecting it, thus claiming the male as their own. Dwarfen territoriality at its finest! :D

The bigger the lump, the better the bragging rights! It also was an indicator of the females strength of character, or madness...depending on how you look at it. ;)

When the tradition started is lost in the mists of time, but according to the Rockbasher lore, the official start of the tradition seems to have been shortly after the fall of Gerontonimus Rockbasher (formerly Kliffcarver). At the end of a gloriously brutal war with some dark elfs.

It seems his son, one Gamling Rockbasher, decided to head to war before marrying his sweetheart Hildagar Rockbasher (his 5th cousin twice removed).

Well..she was known to be quite vicious, especially after swilling her fair share of the clans ale. And single dwarfs being single dwarfs on campaign, Gamling had quite the reputation. So, to on the night before he was to head to war, there was a grand celebration. Gamling and Hildagar each drank their fair share of ale and somehow comments were spoken, as they oft are after that much ale is drunk. Hildagar took a shovel that was lying around the hall for some reason and gave a mighty whack to Gamlings head! She then stood up on the table, and in a loud booming voice (although some accounts from those brave enough, differ on how slurred it sounded) she claimed Gamling as her own and that no other dwarf female was to touch him!

Now the rockbasher clan being infamously known kuldarjh, and Hildagar also having been well known for her especially nasty temper as well as for her tasty ale. No dwarfen female who had heard the tale (and seen his lump) would come near him with a 12 foot spear! Poor Gamlings days as a ladies man on campaign came to an end.

As a caveat to poor Gamling, he finally regained consciousness some 2 days later lying on a rock. His poor comrades having to carry him on the campaign trail to Ulgrids. Woke up to a hearty meal, his beard still full of soup from where he went face down into the bowl he was drinking from.

From that time onwards, its said that if a rockbasher woman whacked a male with a shovel, no other dwarf women would go near him for fear of being attacked by a mad kuldarjh.

Now, kuldarjh being kuldarjh, of course there were the poor dwarfs who had been whacked on the head by more than one clan female. the issue was settled after much, fighting, drinking and the occasional death of the dwarf male.

Another tradition is the passing of the shovel from one generation to the next.  Providing it wasnt broken from either the hit to the head, or over use.

The modern tradition, as seen recently among the non dwarfen races seems to have started when one Miss Grenna Rockbasher decided to help a friend. Her friend, one Sharhar Cu'laire (she spoke dwarf so Grenna had a soft spot for her). Was tryingot figure out a way to tell her boyfriend how much she loved him. Well..Miss Grenna being Miss Grenna, and also being a bit drunk, related the story of her clans courtship rituals. And after much cajoling and egging, it seems miss sharhar did jsut that. She pulled out a shovel and knocked her male out with a good clean whack to the back of his head in front of her friends and declared him hers! They were married shortly after.

It has also been said, that Miss Grenna also whacked one Dalan Stoneaxe over the head with her shovel on multiple occasions showing her true devotion to him. In one case, making a young elf woman who witnessed the event to faint! Miss Grenna supposedly declared that hit a a most excellent omen, the blow being strong enough that it took out more than one person. O.o

Later, Miss Grenna having drank much ale. And again, having a soft spot for her mans neice (one Abigail Firesteed)who also spoke dwarfen, offered her the same advice. After said niece, being obviously a bit nervous about whacking her man with a shovel, sought the advice of a Miss Tegan. Well, it seems miss Grenna and Dalan got to her first, and should the lass decide to do it, miss Grenna gave the shovel to Tegan who then encouraged and gave the shovel to said niece. ;)

After a successful trip to help a family recover their baby from some goblins, Miss Firesteed pulled out her shovel and promptly gave her boyfriend Bear a solid whack on the back of his head! He still bears the lump to this day! Another sign from the gods that the match was a good one. :D

Introduce Yourself / I guess it's about time
« on: February 03, 2008, 11:15:54 pm »
Well this will be more of an introduce "ourselves" than my self.  My family and I have been playing Layo for over about three years and we have made it our home in cyberspace and brought cyberspace into our home through Layo.  I have attached a picture of the four of us that play in our "Command Center".  From left to right we are Angela (Peanut, Clover, Keela), Mike (Clarissa, Josslyn), Ariel (Rose, Dalila, Mellana), and Jon (Kalin).  There are two other members of our clan that are not shown but they are working on their reading and typing skills so they can join us as soon as possible.  They are Tim and Christy.  So all together we are 6 of us.  We live on Oahu, HI where I an finishing my Navy career and getting ready to get a real job.  Angela is a stay at home, home schooling mom, Ariel and Jon are seniors in highschool and believe it or not still get good grades and play Layo too.  See everyone in game.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / The Words Of Kharaz, Voice Of The Eternal Flame
« on: December 10, 2007, 09:36:31 pm »
Many had gathered at the Stormcrest Crossroads on that fateful day of Sunra, the Eighth Day of Novlar, Fourteen Hundred and Twenty-Five. Veteran heroes who had already left their mark on great events and aspiring heroes newly putting their shoulders to turn the wheel of worldly affairs, each with their own motives for being there. But they were all there for the same reason, to hear the words of Kharaz, Voice of the Eternal Flame, Servant of Fisterion, King of Dragons.
"It is well that so many allies have come at my call. Time is of the essence and we have little of it. You stand here, either representing those who fleshed out an alliance with my lord, or simply because you are curious. The Storm that was foretold is gaining in strength and ferocity. Sides are offered and being chosen by those who cannot remain neutral. For in fact, none will remain untouched by it. My lord offers you information and calls upon your aid in weathering this avalanche.

"Things are in motion right now, on the ice wastes of the Barbarian Isles. A group has sent its emissaries there based on information passed to them here. I wager that even some of you, here, may have a fault in that.

"My lord has no quarrel with you, Rofirenite. He has not waged war against the Gold for many generations. Has he not held true to the alliance? Is there not peace with him?

"That is indeed what they have come to do. One way or another they will bring Knad'radoniad into their fold. One way or another. We do not know who. Right now we need to act based on what we know. Fact is that many have joined their faction. More than should be possible.

"Some of them stand out due to their tattoos. A green dragon's head, often found on neck or shoulder. As I said. The tattoo depicts the head of a Green Dragon. It has also minor magical properties.

"Where did you sight them? On Dregar?

"Its magic fades upon the death of the bearer. We know not their exact properties.

"I have passed you vital information already. Perhaps not to all, but I have confirmed what those who may know some things, already fear.

"Who spoke of poison? Who? Step forward. Speak your mind, goblin."
Perhaps the least likely of those gathered, a single wretched goblin, provided the details of how the dragons were being captured, shot with great ballista bearing poisoned spears, poison that would sap the dragon's magics, perhaps, perhaps made from a Bloodpool...
"It would explain much.

"I am afraid we have not much time. The Hunters are converging on their prey as we speak. If they have the means and reach their goal before they are stopped, they will have gained an ally more powerful than you can imagine. Knad'radoniad is old.

"My exact proposal, elf. I know not their numbers, but they travel high over the skies, so they cannot be many.

"Fisterion honours the treaty. He offers information in a time of the uppermost need.

"Knad'radoniad is the ancient White also known as Snowtooth. He rules the Whitefall Kingdom on Bastil. Knad'radoniad may not welcome a force such as this one. However, sand trickles through the hourglass as we speak here.

"Slay them. How you accomplish it, is not my concern.

"I do not believe they will 'meet'. They will come and offer their terms. One way or another, the outcome will likely be the same.

"They are coming from the east. A drake is following them. If you hurry and with a fast ship you can make it there in time. They will not be able to make the trip in one stretch. Humans are not fit for flight.

"My Lord offers you a chance.  Step away now and you will never get another.

"On Bastil is my best guess.

"I have spoken as my lord commanded. The rest is for heroes to act upon. He offers a chance, my lady. A chance for the future. Whether you grasp it or not, is your decision.

"The isle is far from here.

"My Lord has been true to the treaty, has he not? Perhaps with some good will shown today, the future looks brighter for all. The choice is yours. Always. But with it comes a warning of what is to come."
The words were heard by many, and no doubt repeated often, in part or in whole, either in guarded tones or, perhaps, as part of a fantastic tale that few might believe.

Rumour Has It / Bugbear Chieftain Deposed by Strange Crew
« on: November 18, 2007, 04:07:38 am »
Guardsmen and townsfolk are scratching their heads in Mariner's Hold over recent developments in which the dreaded warlord of the bugbear island was apparantly killed by a team of drunken goblins and their massively huge giantkin champion.  Upon returning his head for the sizeable sum of 600 true each, they did a happy dance and stormed the local tavern to throw a 20 keg party to brag and boast of their accomplishments.

When reached for comment, the large one was mostly incoherent, speaking between huge chugs of ale from a cask held high above his head, laughing hysterically and describing the many ways he smashed the bugbear skulls, making beautiful abstract art on the walls of the dungeon.  One of the wee ones appeared to have some talent in showmanship, as he spun the tales and played the harpsichord fluently for the crowd, rousing them to sing along.  "We show bugbears they not gonna push us around no more!" said another, "Taller than them now we cut off legs, haha!"

Crowd reactions were mixed, varying between awe, revelry, caution and hysterical laughter as the 4 proceeded to dish out enough ale to quench an army.  "I always knew this place was goin crazy when I saw that orc fellah in the crafthall, but now goblin hoardes?  Think its time to invest in that farmland near Thalos, this can't be good for property taxes!" said one bystander, a dwarven craftsman.  "Thems just havin ah good time, real good folk." said another, a tavern local huntsman.  "It ain't every day somebody even buy ye ah beer, and these uns treat the whole town, with a dead warlord to boot!  Ah reckon they better folk than most of us"

In light of their contribution to the bounty commision, the local guards chose not to interfere with the revelry, ignoring more than a few noise ordinances for the night.  "I have to admit, I was alarmed when I first saw them, but a head is a head... and these four seemed to accomplish by themselves what regiments of over a dozen bounty hunters often die attempting.  We look forward to any further help they may offer in the region." stated a local clerk. "It's very rare that people accept those higher risk missions... and these boys deliver."

General Discussion / Rumors -- Please read
« on: October 27, 2007, 07:00:18 pm »
The following is addressed to the entire Layonara community.  It is not directed at one person or any specific group of people. Please read it and understand it.

As a recent post has highlighted, there have been some ugly and hurtful rumors flying around recently. This kind of thing, though different people and different circumstances, seem to happen on a regular basis. Sometimes the target is one person, other times it's a group of people.  There are back-channel whispers, finger-pointing, and accusations flying around.  The GM Team gets reports of this-and-that but rarely does anyone have the evidence or guts to back up the claims. Some rumors fade, but there are always some waiting to take their place.  It's a continuous cycle, and it is getting really, really old.

I urge everyone to hear what I'm saying here and take it to heart.  Rumors are almost without fail caustic and poisonous to the community.  You may interact with electronic representations, seeing only words and artificial avatars, but there are people behind those things.  Real people.  Not all rumors are false, but most rumors are not nearly as true as some would believe them to be. Whatever the case, they're bad...bad for those who spread them, bad for those who are the targets of them, and bad for this community.

Without going into specifics, the most recent batch of rumors ranges from annoying to very serious with implications that stretch beyond this little community of ours.  And so I ask you all...

If you are involved in spreading such rumors, stop. If you have proof, then present it to a Gm.  If not, then stop. You're hurting people and you're hurting this community.

If you are engaged in activities in the game world/forums/IRC channel(s) that are the center of one or more of these rumors and those activities are contrary to what we have established here, stop.

If you are involved in or complicit in sewing the seeds of discord among all or part of the community, stop.

At this point, I am not overly concerned with what the "facts" may be in the case of the most recent events. There will forever be three sides to every story: "Yours, mine and the truth."  Since the last is often difficult to obtain, we're left with the word of one against the word of another.  As I said, it just needs to stop.

I want everyone to realize that these things are harmful, and they affect more people than just those at the muddy end of the stick.

In the thread about Layonara's future, there's a comment in there about the NWN servers and how long they'll stay up.  To quote Leanthar:

Quote
The NwN servers will stay up and running until it either a) gets to expensive for me to keep it running, so keep donating as this is important for NwN or b) the world or community becomes to much of a hassle in terms of time, effort, or headaches for the servers to stay online or c) we make it to beta testing of the new product which is still a ways away. Layonara is not going away, nor is it fading away; but much rests on the communities shoulders for how long the NwN servers remain online.
It is petty and dramatic things like rumors that are most likely to bring down the Layonara NWN community.  This kind of thing really drains the GM Team and Leanthar himself. It is frustrating, mentally exhausting and time-consuming. In some cases, it has taken hours of research and checking in on people, logs, actions, reports and so forth just to prove or disprove the allegations...time wasted and time not spent interacting with the community.

I don't want this to sound like a threat, but the fact of the matter is, there have been times, more than most of you realize, where the fate of the NWN servers has been close to a complete shut-down because of petty bickering, factional rumors and divisive words and actions.

It all needs to stop, people. I can't stress that enough.

Now, please...understand what I have written here.  Read it over, again if you need to, and really see what I am saying.  And then just think about it and remember it.

And also, please understand that when we take action as a result of things that go on here, be it a banning, a reprimand or some other kind of administrative action, that we do not do so lightly or on a whim. We are not targeting individuals because we don't like them or because we just feel like it.  The GM Team has, among its many duties, an obligation to protect this community.  It comes along with the job, and whatever people may believe, it is not a particularly enjoyable part of the job to ban someone who is acting contrary to the spirit of this community.

I do not really wish for this to become a discussion.  I don't want current or past rumors brought up here and presented with explanations, accusations or justifications.  I don't want people to post their opinions on the situation, be it the one most immediately at hand or any number of such things that have occurred.  Do not use this thread to confess or confirm.  I do not seek a string of "I agree" posts, nor do I particularly want any "Thanks" either.

I want people to read this and understand it.

I know a lot of people love this community and have developed very real and lasting real-life friendships as a result.  Keep that in mind please in all your future actions. Friendships are not formed of bickering and rumormongering. They're formed of a commonality of purpose and philosophy.  If you find, however, that you cannot continue to be a supportive and positive influence in this community, then consider stepping away from it before you contribute to events that may end up hurting those you call friends.

I generally have a lot of faith and respect for this community as a whole.  I sincerely hope that is not misplaced.

Regards,
Dorganath

General Discussion / Enjoy Everyday
« on: June 22, 2007, 06:32:48 pm »
I write this with a heavy heart.

A good friend of mine died yesterday.  He was 40 years old, had three children 18, 7 and 3.  He was going through security to get on a flight to go and spend a weekend in Las Vegas and dropped dead from a brain anuerism in the security line.

I write this, well, to remind everyone that what you do everyday should be precious.

Hug your children.  Kiss your wife or husband.  Tell your parents you love them.  Pet a dog.  Look at nature and revel in it's beauty.  Give a beggar a dollar.  Make the world a better place, somehow, even if it's just your small slice of it. And don't let petty   stuff overwhelm you. See the beauty in life, and contribute to it.

It seems to me that we never know when we have nine soul strands lost, and the next one is the last.

Spread Joy, Happiness, and Love,

Nathan

General Discussion / Awesome time
« on: May 05, 2007, 07:10:34 am »
I just have to say I have been having an awesome time of late. I did a low level quest with Minerva the other day and had a blast. Everyone did really well in there RP. I would have to say it was one of the best quests I have been on. It also showed our PC's and us how bad the situation is out there.

I just shows that you do not need to have a really high level character to have fun in Layo.

Thanks

General Discussion / Character Approvers
« on: May 04, 2007, 03:14:08 am »
Inspired by Merlin34Baseball's 'good post' I just wanted to make another positive statement!

People have been so quick to denigrate Layo of late. See L's recent post - can you blame the guy? Anyway, I cast my mind back to when I started here and submitted my first (of many!) character and then .... waited .... and waited .... and waited .... and waited for approval.

How good/responsive/thought-provoking/constructive are those on the character approvers team now?!!? I think they are doing an unbelieveable job. I can't quite work out when they must sleep or work or whatever but I shouldn't question my fortune (as a member of the layo community) to have these people in the job that are there now.

I applaud their efforts.

PS. If you agree with me, don't forget to tick the thanks button, Tanman is beating me! hahahahaha

General Discussion / Positive Vibes
« on: May 03, 2007, 04:17:30 am »
I've seen an incredible amount of motivation from numbers of people in the past few weeks.

I don't care what anyone says, it's there.

The issue, and this whole declining attitude, is that everybody is feeding off each other's negativity.  All the while, the folks working incredible projects or more importantly working miracles of roleplay in game are keeping their mouths shut because they're either too busy or too complacent.

There are incredibly fun things going on, and it has to work on all sides to make sure everyone feels it.  The people having a great time in game need to spread it around.  They need to realize the motivation they give each other in a bright spark of good roleplay, and probably divert their attention to making sure it's there for others.  The people who are acting a bit edgy in game need to snap their fingers near their ears and wake up.  And hey!  I'm not innocent!  Next time I'm in game and find myself off on east by myself doing nothing but wailing god knows what, I need to snap my fingers near my ear!  We all do at times and we all know how things could be better.  We've all had the glowing moments.  You just need to get that smile on your face because you know inside what this game can be like if everyone just snaps their fingers at once.  Because we definitely feed each other's moods, and it's a quick spiral downwards if folks stay down, and the opposite is just as true.

I'm not ignorant, I know things come in waves.  And I know everyone has their time to shoulder the burden of keeping spirits up.  You think it's anything new that in a time of server changes there's a decline in motivation?  That the people usually on the forefront of maintaining excitement are perhaps so nose-deep in things that they're not out there with constant reminders of how great things have been, are, and will be?  Heck no!  It's always like this, on every update, change, and evolution on every server I've been a part of.  And there shouldn't be one shred of surprise in this.

But I will say this, and it is a pointed statement.  It's the best of communities that keeps it together and picks up slack.  It's the best of communities that doesn't come bickering to the forums about some player or group of players but instead heads out with open arms to that despised person or people and instead tries to bring them into the fold.  It's not hard.  We weren't all born unto roleplay greatness and internet morality.  It takes some time and it takes a good community to help *everyone* find their place.

I could post up pictures of this that and the next beautiful thing to come, but they're all empty areas, and monsters without theme, meaning, or any real reward... without people that are happy to be here.  And heck yeah I'm excited about these things people are working on and getting ready to put out there, but it all breaks in one swift blow over our knee if the motivation of the community isn't there when it comes.

Be positive, show your best, spread the vibe.  I'm no hero in this sense but I'll try a bit harder too.  It's a fun ride uphill if we can just carry each other.

And I sincerely thank every single person who is already working at this or reads this and maybe goes in game and tries to get things going positively, or remarks on IRC with things that will keep the positive vibes circling around.  It takes a village, and there are no exceptions.  We are all one community.

General Discussion / Do you dream of opening an ingame shop?
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:22:01 pm »
All,

I got some questions ingame about starting up a guild and opening a shop.  I thought I'd share my thoughts and encouragment here.

The Leilon Arms for many many RL weeks was open every Friday and merchants would come and sell their wares.  The Freelancers, seeing the benefits of this, had "merchant tables" installed in their Point Harbor tavern.  Anyone can come and sell their crafted or looted goods.  Are you a ring maker?  Perhaps an armor and weapons maker?  Tailor?  Each has a table where a merchant may place his/her inventory.

Do you really have the patience to come every week for several hours and sell your goods?  What about the weeks that RL keeps you away, do you find someone to fill your spot?

What if no one comes to the open tavern night, do you give up and not return the next week?  Or, do you work ingame and through the forums to generate interest?

Perhaps you have grandiose plans of opening a crafting guild.  Imagine!  A grand guild hall with persistent storage, rooms, elaborate dining hall, master bedrooms.  What happens when three of your five founders stop playing?  How empty does the enormous hall feel when it is just you staring at the chests?

Guilds and shops take tremendous OOC dedication, organization, and vision.  Do not succumb to the desire to leap to the end goal; start small and build up.  Prove to yourself, the players, and most importantly the GM/builder team that you have what it takes.

Perhaps there is already a guild out there with an under-staffed guildhall, or a tavern willing to host your half-elf convention.  Make good use of the resources already at your disposal before moving forward.

If possible we as players need to encourage such efforts.  Story nights at a tavern are opportunities to RP and let others shine.  Market nights are a chance for independent crafters to feel their worth.

Let's all work together to make Layonara a rich, immersive environment for us all.  Few things compare to a well-attended tavern night:  Bickering at the bar over the cost of ales, haggling in the corner over a pile of malar skins, a bard being booed onstage.

  See you ingame, PnP.
