I know it's two days early but I don't think even with the lovely layo-tolerant wife I have will I be allowed near the forums on Christmas day.

Curse your secular political correctness ...

General Discussion / The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:36:39 am »
I'm introducing a new series for the rest of this month and the next month (and maybe longer) that highlights the dungeons of Layo, and especially the new content. Primarily, the purpose for the series is to allow for those that have yet been unable or simply won't be able to explore the various dungeons/adventure areas due to time constraints, since many of the dungeon areas require a significant time committment to visit.

This series is.....

.... regular adventuring but with added GM spice/help/porting in and out.
.... an effort to give our casual/family gamers who have a hard time committing five+ hours to adventuring a peek at what's out there to be explored.
.... an effort to help people develop new adventuring groups as well as play with their current one.
.... an effort to help new players become familiar with the world and with older players.
.... an effort to allow for slower and more directed, meaningful exploration, without the feeling that "if we don't rush through these areas, this will take ten hours instead of five."

This series is not.....

.... a set of conventional quests with plots and stories.
.... a way to gather CNR.

The format goes like this:

1) Name the area we'll visit and a starting location. Most locations will require multiple sessions, so often the session will end and start within the dungeon. Therefore, the primary duty of the GM is to port folks in and out for these short sessions.
2) Give level req's (I'll aim for high, mid, and low levels areas).
3) Each session runs for two hours, two and a half max.
4) No XP will be offered, save for maybe 500xp RP bonks. The payoff is the exploration and monster XP.
5) The party closes after it enters the dungeon. The party opens again when it's time to visit a new dungeon.
6) Gathering CNR during the trip is prohibited. However, dropped loot is kept and split by the party as usual. This doesn't mean that we can't go to places that have CNR, but gathering CNR is not the purpose. Exploration and PC interaction is the primary goal here.

The purpose of this thread, other than to explain the new series, is to allow for everyone to make requests on dungeons/areas people wish to explore. So, with that said, request away! You've got slightly less than a week to choose the first place to go.

Just for Fun / Corath Babies Invade Hlint
« on: December 05, 2008, 05:39:13 pm »
People of Mistone,

All mothers, nurses and midwives are to be forewarned that the Black Wizards of Corath have tainted the baby formula yet again with foul necromancy.  If you or any of your relatives notice any strange noises, unwarranted hostility or demonic facial expressions in your young ones, it is highly advised that you take them to the nearest temple for exorcism and medical treatment.  Conversely, one might also want to investigate their family tree for any possible demonic relations.  If found to be uncurable, please mail your little tieflings to 128 Haft Lake, Prantz, Care of: Czukay for a 100 true rebate.

PS: take care to add proper padding and breathing holes within the box.  Broken, damaged or otherwise non-mint condition babies will only yeild a 50 true reward.

Introduce Yourself / Hmm... wonder if anyone would notice...
« on: November 27, 2008, 03:29:34 pm »
if I just sneaked in and submitted a character without saying hello

//how come 'sneaked' seems to be a word, but 'snuck' is not? Who spell-checks the spellcheckers anyway?

Wow, anyway. It's time for my yearly attempt to get back into playing Layonara!

*trumpets; fanfare*

Hopefully this time my attempt won't be ruined by some life altering RL event that causes me to relocate, jobhunt, remain hopitalized, become incarcerated, contract a potentially deadly disease or spend 4 months in Iraq, again.

Some of you might remember me as one of the following characters
a) Bidwick Mandershanks - Fatally flawed human fighter multiclass alcoholic recluse.
b) Berdin Stonebrow - When someone makes reference to the stodgy, suspicious, abrasive, magic-user hating stereotypical dwarven priest of Vorax... this is the guy they were referring to.
c) Gork - Half-ogre fighter. He used to chase cats around Hlint, 'Heeere kitty!' eat garbage and say 'Gork' a lot.

I used to play a lot with Gulnyr, Doc-Holiday, Klaug and just about anyone else that wanted some company.

I'm gonna go make an effort to become familiar with the history since the war with Bloodstone, and submit a character while I install NwN and all the layo files on my brand new PC

Rumour Has It / Orc shaman of Grand Repents!
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:10:28 am »
A blue orc arrives at Leringard to offer all that he owns to the guards there, and book passage to krashin.  When asked why, he responds...

"My god Grand I have served well all these years, but for what purpose?  Even now he grants power to that wretched coward Segem, a killer of children, a trickster who fights with words an threats and forsakes the axe.  Still my god serves him, so unworthy of my axe he has proven to be.  I hereby renounce Grand and all of his works, and speak freely the name of Dorand without fear.  Now I sail to Krashin, to find peace.  After 80 years and more, there is nothing left in me.  Farewell my friends.  Carry on with the strength and honor I never had.  If only I had renounced him sooner...  *he then barks with conviction* this is not the way of honor, Segem!  This is not the craft!  What you do brings shame on all our kind, and I am shamed to ever give fealty to the cowardly god you serve!"

He then sails off to retire in the unclaimed lands, never to be heard from again.

//retiring Kor to make way for a new character.  He just had no future in him, as fun as he was to play... stay tuned!

Rumour Has It / Last flash of the duellist
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:20:03 am »
Sad rumors start to spread quickly from Dalanthar to northern parts of Dregar and further, as a pitch black heared man wearing a blue fullplate enters the town carrying lifeless body on his arms. He walks with determined steps through the town as the towns folks around looking at the sad scene, whispering to each other. Strong arms carrying a lifeless body of older, silvery heared man through the city. They can been seen leaving the city, heading north, towards Willows Weep.

Introduce Yourself / Just wanted to say hello.
« on: November 14, 2008, 05:28:59 am »
I'm new to the forum, the game, and by comparrison to the rest of you, probably everything else. I do however love NWN and have been fascinated with D&D for a long time. I just couldn't ever actually get a good grasp on a lot of the concepts. I found this site and immediately got really excited...finally, maybe a community that could help me learn a bit.

oh by the way, hello all!

General Discussion / World Announcement! *claps*
« on: October 29, 2008, 03:46:12 pm »
May I present to you an announcement that will shake the foundations of countries all over the globe:

"The coolest person ever was born on Friday the 24.th of October! I present to you, my newly born daughter - Tilde!"

This means that I will not be able to check the forums as often in the upcoming weeks. Nor will I be able to be present in-game a lot. I'll check my inbox as often as time allows it of course, but patience is a virtue.

Rumour Has It / Journey's End
« on: October 25, 2008, 10:11:01 am »
*Two forlorn figures lead a small cart to Folian's Temple in the depths of the Forst of Fog. Wordlessly, the older of the two figures, a lean man of middle years, takes from the cart the linen-wrapped body of his fallen friend and companion. Nearby, at the shoulder of the second figure, she a lithe younger woman who watches the scene through reddened eyes, a white-faced Belinaran monkey chitters and fidgets, distress and confusion written large in all-too-human expressions.

Moving slowly under the weight of his lifeless burden, the man approaches the High Priest of the Temple of the Longstrider. Carefully, gently, he lays the corpse to the sward at his feet.*

A fallen son of the Prince of Wolves.

*whispered*

Rest well nephew.

*With a nod towards his lady companion, the man quickly and quietly departs the temple to find the fallen's father and mother and tell them of life's greatest curse .. to outlive one's child.*

Rumour Has It / The War in Belinara comes closer!
« on: October 18, 2008, 07:07:58 pm »
As Sasha moves around she spreads the word as best she can.

I have just returned once again from Belinara and know this! You may think you are safe! You may think here that a war half a world away can never come to you...but know this.

Westgate has fallen! Kuhl is all but in the hands of the enemy. Now it appears Nesar is capitulating to the Dragon Stealers giving them control over almost the entire northern half of Belinara.

Still no interest? Well let me tell you this little fact! The Dragon Stealers have spies moving through Arnax, this is how it began in Kuhl, and even worse.....Nesar have agreed to supply the Dragon Stealers with FLEETS! Not a few ships! FLEETS! Now I see some of you understand the import of that fact! With fleets suddenly Mistone is not so safe! Belinara is just an ocean away! Soon you may have Drachs, Dragons and Dragon Stealers running around in your own front yard! Then what will you do!

Queen Alise, General Telos and Lord Alexander are gathering together supplies and equipment and soldiers in their mission to gather an army in Hilm to drive out the Dragon Stealers for good!

Others like myself seek ways to bring down the Dragon Stealers and prevent them gaining any further advantages. Fleets are a priority, if you want to help, help us devise a way to destroy the fleets of the Nesar before they fall into the hands of the Dragon Stealers!

Trade and Market Hall / Bjorn's House: Now Accepting Orphans/Apprentices
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:57:10 pm »
Hello and welcome to Bjorn's House.  A few years ago Leringard was stuck by tragedy in the large ravenous scaled variety.  The devastation was great and many were killed or displaced in the ensueing madness.  During that time ye may have noticed me frantically filling donation bins, bringing huge bushels of lumber, dropping off clothes and blankets and supplies of all sorts.  I came to the realization that this simnply was not enough.  One cannot just throw money and resources at a problem, but deal with it at the root.

I have a dream.  A dream where children need not go hungry at night or with a roof over their heads.  Where the student is taught to be the master and encouraged to find more students.  Where every single nefarious street gang goes out of buisiness, because thievery never paid as well as honest work.  Where those who've had everything take from them realize that wealth is fleeting, and that true power comes from their own two hands and determination.  Now I can't afford to do so immediately for all of them, but I figure I can take at least 20 at a time, teach them the moral values and crafting skills they need to survive and prospire, in the hopes that they too will carry on their work and each build a house for twenty more when they are successful enough.  So I have converted my mansion in Leringard into an apprenticehall, now capable of feeding, clothing and housing 20 young uns from around 5 years on up to their late teens.  My plan is that they will learn.  Smelting, Gemcraft, Tailoring, Tools, armor, weapons, reading, writing, scribing, carpentry, tinkering, commerce and even self-defense.  I've already converted one of my warehouse rooms into a small crafthall, with a professional forge, anvil and wheelbarrow outside.

It is my hope that I'll see many of you older uns there as well.  Not so much for donations, I'm wealthy enough as it is after all, but to help me in their training.  I would ask that any with experience in any craft send me word should you wish to volunteer for classes, or any of ye scholars out there, mathemeticians, bards and the like would be interested in telling the wee un tales.  Of course I am also now taking applications for wee uns interested in signing up.  Preferential placement will be given to the poorest of applicants, especially those orphaned by the dragon attacks or similar circumstances.

There is no reason whatsoever for any one to go hungry or resort to thievery as a means of survival in this day and age.  Nor should illiteracy or poverty remain the standard of the world.  Each of my students shall be trained not only to craft, think and reason, but most importantly to teach as well.  For it is Dorand who said, "Better to teach a man to forge than just give him an axe".  As a dwarf of only around two centuries, I reckon I have plenty more fight left in me to keep training lads for the next half millenia or so.  That'll be plenty of generations yet, and generations after them that can benefit from this method.  Father Logan shall be available living on-site in case of any medical emergencies, and is my first instructor specializing in spellcraft, reading, scribing, and ethics.  I will be on site for security, and teaching the forge, carpentry, gemcraft and supplying craftable natural resources for them to work with.  Knowledge is our armor and skill is our weapon.  This fight we fight will not be on the field of battle, but in the forge, the tables and the classroom.

Upon graduation I will be working with the guilds to see about specialized training for them, let them meet the right people and get a foot in the door of industry.  Any guilds interested in sponsorship in the next few years please contact me at 128 Leringard.  I also invite any mage guilds to send a representative to test the younguns for magical potential, in case they'd be better served in the mage guild.

Dorand bless you all for your help.  I be needing some beds and classroom seats filled just as much as I need instructors.  Also, any homeowners in Leringard who would see fit to donate usage of their outdoor forges, please let me know.  Could use all the forges we can get!

-Bjornigar Ironguts

Layonara Server / Donation Pooling - Community Drive
« on: October 05, 2008, 05:59:00 pm »
Alright as you may noticed there's a thermometer for donations on the front page and the Donate page now has a report of the last donors.  This is all maintained through a site who operates this sort of thing called Donations Tracker.

What I've tried to do is set this system up so I don't have to do anything.  Yes, programmers are lazy.  As much as I love Chongo, I don't want him nagging me to get some details on things when I'm busy.

Secondly, I don't have access to Leanthar's PayPal account nor do I want it.  Never have, hopefully never will. When dealing with private financial affairs the last thing I want is communication of passwords from my system risking others.

What this system does, and it must be used for your donation to be tracked, is collect payment information from PayPal and form it into a report for me.  THEY DO NOT COLLECT CREDIT CARD INFORMATION.  They basically collect your username (or you can remain anonymous) and then they generate a neat image or report of the campaign's current numbers when PayPal reports back to them whether you did indeed go all the way through with a payment and for how much.

The report you now see on the Donate page will indicate a surplus for the month, so if you exceed the payments I will roll it forward. Please try to keep it to shorter periods for recurring payments.  I don't want people paying for 6 months and us not being here in 6 months for whatever reason, try to keep everything to 3 months or less.  You will also be able to account for it easily.

I thank you all for your exuberance, and I hope the tracker system will help you determine where you stand.  I know its a bit askew for this month, but I expect when it resets next month, things will start getting into a nice system.  We will work through any issues as they arise.

Cheers,
orth

General Discussion / Naughty naughty dwarf
« on: October 05, 2008, 12:23:14 pm »
dear Sniverous or guild owners of chests at 223 Prantz,

my apologies but whilst innocently waiting to use the portal from Prantz ter wayfare I, Rockhead Howling Wolf, had an overwhelming desire ter sneak a look in a large storage chest. I think it was the result if some mind altering attacks from the mushrooms close ter Prantz! Anyway the bloomin thing wouldnt close so I has moved all the objects into the adjacent chest ( overseen by the gods! (dm)).

please accept my apologies fer the fingerprints all over yer goods, all of which are still there! and fer the spittle on the adamantium as I was just checking ter see if it were real by tasting it.

please leave a note if'n yer want ter get the judges involved in the matter and I will gladly pay yer some compensation, maybe a few flagons of dwarf ale, fer being rude and nosey whilst in your abode.I promise I did not try any of yer clothes but that purple shirt hanging up in the corner is nice. I never touched it!

Alternatively yer may want ter call the militia out in which case please give advance warning by bird and I will be away ter the dessert fer a few months ter perfect me disguise.

Yours Humbly,

Rockhead Howling Wolf.

(ps. thanks ter Atlas, Vincent and Salleron fer the advice. Hope the close circuit tv shows me being honest!)

General Discussion / Just a note
« on: August 04, 2008, 06:58:43 pm »
Some of you may have noticed I haven't been in-game much lately, (some of you may even have noticed my absence before I did ;)), just wanted to let people know I haven't and won't be going anywhere... I've just been very busy lately with law school related work. The semester hasn't even started yet, and already I'm remembering with fondness how much free time I had when I worked a 9-5 job. I'm probably moving soon, as well, so taking care of that may eat up time. So, I may be out of game (or on sporadically) for a while longer, but I'm still reading the forums, lurking on IRC, and checking my PMs, so if you need to contact me or my characters, you'll be able to. I just need some time to get things done without the addicting distraction of Layo. I'll start being more active before long, I promise :)

Rumour Has It / The Church of Goran Claims Millions
« on: July 26, 2008, 03:28:54 am »
It has been told that a hooded benefactor has donated what has been rumored to be in excess of three million true to the church of Goran. A simple note was left for all to see in Highpass Fort:

"We are few, we 'heroes'. Our blades alight, our fingers ablaze with the Al'noth, our righteous storms from the heavens... we wield so very much. But these things help not the lands in which we posture as protectors.

Invention save us. Ease the pains through wit and wisdom. May this church rise with this wealth to not build grand citadels on islands far away, not to gain followers or power... but instead to create that which might aid the lands in need."

The church is said to have accepted crates upon crates worth of gold and relics alike. The relics were said to be of design rarely seen even in the most powerful of circles. A hooded figure was reported seen standing atop the snowy hills of Highpass Fort watching over the recovery of the crates left outside, then vanishing with a gust of wind as the last of the ancient relics was brought safely inside the temple.
