Layonara Server / Right-click, Save Image As ?
« on: December 14, 2017, 12:29:00 am »

Right-click, Save Image As ? Or equivalent for your OS/Browser :) The maps are all just images, so they can be saved like any other one. I've copied and edited them a lot, heh. See here and here for examples of experiments! Coastlines (among other things) still needed a lot of work, but I pretty much carved them as exactly as I could from the original map as a starting point. (And yeah, the other one is terrible for readability but I was just trying to jam a lot of text where it shouldn't go :| )

General Discussion / I don't know if there are any
« on: November 24, 2017, 01:35:00 pm »

I don't know if there are any plans or discussions in either direction at the moment. EE release is still being actively developed with community input, and the potential to split bases is a concern for more servers than just ours. The ones that I've seen talking about mirroring were bigger servers that might have the log-in numbers to warrant it.

In Layo's case -- and this is just me talking out my @#%$, to be clear, and in no way reflects anything official or "team branded" -- even if upgrading became a possibility for the server (no idea, there!), I guess we'd need to get an idea of how many of our remaining players would be able to upgrade along with it and see where we were at. I'm not sure doing all the work of updating (and buying, at that) would be a great investment if you were going to lose what players you had in hopes of getting some unconfirmed old ones back :) I think we have some people still running on XP here, which could be a problem. Still, NWN is getting a lot more eyes than it has in awhile.

Anyway, the news is still in early stages, that whole situation is still evolving, and Layo isn't going anywhere at the moment, so no one should feel compelled to drop $20 for EE on Layo's account. Or,

Don't panic!

Hehe. I'll be picking it up hopefully soon, and am excited for NWN. My GOG client isn't going anywhere, though, so sitting tight seems the sanest option for the nonce :)

I read about PW's and that there won't be any problems on regards of compability , but well guess we'll know till its get out.

That really depends on your definition of "compatibility". It's definitely the same game, and all your custom content, save games, etc will work. SP modules should work, though some may need some tweaking. But patches are rarely "drop-in" beasts for servers, and while there's no content that would cause a lot of 2da merging headaches, there's a lot more going on than a patch of old. NWNX and NWNCX features being integrated into the base game are exciting, but are changes, especially with NWNX getting what looks like a whole new shiny codebase. So even if it's not a huge deal, it's not automated :)

Quote from: "LordCove"&cid="2763241"

This may very well bring a lot of old and new folks to the server!

I don't know. Just like patches of old, you can't log into 1.69 servers with 1.74 clients, and 1.69 clients can't join 1.74 servers -- so if people come back for EE, they're not going to be able to play in servers that haven't made the switch... and servers making the switch early (if they upgrade at all) can leave behind players that never left, you know? I'm personally excited for the NWN community as a whole, but there's some valid concerns about base-splitting as some commit to updating and others either won't or can't. One person was even asking after bulk key buying discounts to bring all their players in; others are talking about keeping both versions up.

(There is nothing official in any of these comments, so I'm not trying to speculate on what's going to happen Layo-wise -- just that there's other factors at work, you know?)

Character Submissions / All good, it's not why she
« on: November 18, 2017, 12:52:13 am »

All good, it's not why she was stuck in Spellgard, or at least only tangentially in that if she was going to have a lot of CDQs I wanted one before she left to get her back on the path. Plus I'd thought she might pick up on some plague stuff in Spellgard while that was going on :)

With the BAB requirement and that she has 5 sorc levels, I think the earliest she could take US is 10th level. I thought she was level 8 for some reason, but she's actually still 7! So, mechanical progress-wise, she'd be expanding her cleric levels (given that she can't do much with sorc right now, it makes sense anyway); her current goal is learning to soundlessly cast spells, which she will be able to do at level 9, so US would sort of be the next step in that journey, having had to spend such time only turning and praying. She's got some time !

Her CDT being well maintained is also something of an illusion, as after its restructuring it's been dominated by her original submission ;) I haven't even caught up to where it was before I started over (after Lola's CDQ, I think). Anticipating a CDT update request, I pulled several WIP entries to show development snips from, but as I looked them over they were more focus on character development (well duh I suppose) than class training, which is sort of passed over with things like "after my time in the x crypts" or summed up in being guided to different places. Part of that is the nature of the journal, another that these were just snips based on quick notes I took after RP sessions (and so leave out more magicky observation things), and the other is that having intended to work on PM long-term, I just wanted to start the CDQ chain asap to begin said development... which would in turn give more to write about!

I don't have that list from here, but when I do I will revisit to add more class-relevant observations in it. Otherwise, it'll a long way to CDT update land, 'cause I think she's got... I don't know, at least 5 more entries to even hit Spellgard, hehe. We'll see what comes first, I guess. Barring quests, it'll likely be awhile before she gets 2 levels though, so it's not like she was ready yesterday.

Character Submissions / I have given this some
« on: November 14, 2017, 02:13:00 pm »
I have given this some thought when able, and have decided that perhaps PM is a bridge too far, for Layo. My intent was to use this to mostly replace sorc levels, in order to represent her extreme focus on necromancy in arcane magic, as there are not a lot of flavorful options to take otherwise and cleric levels by themselves are more than sufficient to represent her using them against undead.

While I am very fond of the various ways one could tie Lucindite lore and history into the arm graft, if one takes all the other things literally it doesn't fit as neatly. I mainly wanted it for symbolic purposes and to grow her necromancer potential beyond what is possible otherwise. I liked to imagine a Neema progressively "toughening" through her experiences and research, despite a gentle start -- imagining a future Neema with a skeletal arm, higher HP, and an immunity to crit is to imagine a transformative change that I thought would be really interesting.

I considered pulling back entirely from adding another class (she is already split class and stats, so she will never be a mechanical powerhouse), but I still really want something that can represent a "synergy" of her abilities, since she treats her priestess and sorceress spells the same (and wouldn't cast, say, Earthquake, because it's not one she is granted). Otherwise she's just bad at both.

In a perfect world, she could take a few levels of US and a few of PM and be a chilled out gal, but after thinking about it I have decided to replace the PM request with US for the following reasons:

  • The most obvious is simple expediency. While she still might not qualify without further updating her CDT, Undead Slayer is classed "mundane" and is still attainable. With the current restrictions in place, Pale Master is not.

  • But it's not the only reason. I've realized that US will work much better with her existing character evolution -- without being able to speak, Neema will likely never reach a point where her spellcasting in practice catches up with her spellcasting potential. Auto-Silent is incredibly far away for this kind of character. So while she might be able to cast Death Ward, it is harder for her, because she must learn to do it silently. The innate US abilities are great for this, because it makes sense that she would need these protections on a deeper level than most divine casters, and her necromantic gifts can only be of assistance in that regard.

  • Unlike PM, Slayer will advance her available spell selection. With PM, this was okay, since it was meant to completely represent her arcane ability, but the same is not true of her cleric levels. So, even though they'll be weak, there's always the potential that should she ever reach level 40, she'd be able to cast any divine or arcane spell, which is wonderful for a Lucindite and actually something I envisioned for her early on and then abandoned to avoid straying conceptually from necromancy.

  • The ability to Cleanse (damage undead at expense of your own life) is what sold me on the concept. There is no way that it is not a magical ability, and the type of magic is almost certainly necromancy. It's exactly the kind of thing a non-evil necromancer would learn to do with life/death energies.

  • Lastly, as I mentioned, I was in love with the idea of a graft being achieved as a mark of honor in something like the Risen, but... because of that, my whole intent was to not *take* the graft level until she had earned it through CDQ, at an epic level. I realized there's really no need to be attached to the class in order to be attached to the concept, because the abilities associated with the arm are not super important to the concept. Immunity to crit would be nice, but what can you do. ;)

Layonara Server / Some features from the CPP
« on: November 09, 2017, 11:23:00 am »
Some features from the CPP have already been incorporated into Layo a few updates ago. The cooler things for nwn(c)x are Windows-only, and as far as I know are not likely to be ported. All the Linux devs I've seen that might have worked on that object to not being able to release as open source. It doesn't hurt anything to download it for yourself, though. I think I'm currently running the beta.

Edit - if you were asking if any fixes were worth players downloading to play on Layo, I'm not sure there's much point :) just a few GUI changes (eg colorized icons, if one didn't already use them), because the server is on 1.69 :)

Hilm Castle shouldn't be blocked, where in the area are you at? The two transitions back towards Miritrix and to the Great Forest are still used fairly often :)

Character Submissions / I think it can make more RP
« on: September 26, 2017, 11:34:00 am »

I think it can make more RP sense for a character to go pure caster/Spellsword, but I think it's not the path the PrC is built to be most accessible to. Spellsword is a "synergy" class, that takes two different types of training and makes a greater sum than their individual parts. I could see something like "Weapon Focus In Melee Weapon" ala Champion for SS qualifications, instead -- then if you had the proficiency, you could do the weapon, otherwise, not so much, but it does throw off qualify-speed comparison and isn't "general training". Fighters get all the weapon and armor stuff for free, so they'll qualify with that and the caster levels. If you replaced them with just something like WF, fighters still need an extra feat, and one that doesn't have anything to do with the "combining" theme, when the idea is that they've already undergone the broad martial training that will be needed. If you also nixed the armor reqs (I know you weren't suggesting it, but hey, maybe you won't wear armor, either), pure casters would qualify faster than mixed, with only marginally more experience with a particular weapon vs broad experience and training, in what's intended as a "little of this, little of that" class :)

For a mage-character focused entirely in an important RP way on one particular weapon, a weaponmaster/spellsword would be cool. And an eternity of manual feats!

I'm not married to anything, anywhere, really, but I think it's generally expected that Spellswords will not be pure casters, but have significant martial training (eg Fighter levels) that will grant those feats. Characters going a different (and sometimes more interesting!) route need to invest manually to represent the important parts. I built a test Spellsword once that needed an unusual build (rogue/minimal sorc) and it was murder to get all the feats in time and still have some room for RP choices :) For this particular class, though, and in a medium that, as Dorg mentioned, is not terribly flexible, it probably makes sense to keep an ideal/most common path in mind and pre-req for that.

I'm drifting off-topic, but in a weird way this is also why I'm more a fan of expanding feat/spells/archetype-things in NWN than adding classes. It seems like once you add a class/PrC, you kinda need fifty more to cover your options that don't fit in that package, and I'm personally more of a Lego type. The only problem I have with extra hurdles for characters not on that path is your exact scenario -- discovering late that you're not on track to meet multiple pre-reqs. Which sucks!

Anyway, back to Sibbicai, if you have any GPs left and remember what feats you took when, you could pick up to three feat levels to swap feats to get the pre-reqs faster without the third class? You're probably better off with fighter levels, really (and are already approved for them!), but I thought I'd mention your options.

Character Submissions / Hey sb, sorry for the wait --
« on: September 25, 2017, 03:15:02 pm »
Hey sb, sorry for the wait --  given that you've just discovered Sibbi isn't prepared to go SS, why don't we call this the fighter sub and approve that, and then you can resub once he's closer to being able to take levels ?

I get the trying to make up for lost CDT with extra long sub, it's something I've had to do on more than one occasion, hehe. Since he can't wear all types of armor yet, maybe you could use this as fodder for his next sub updated for some of his training over that period of time? Perhaps he'll fight in armor dealing with spell failure, borrow armors or weights to train in from the Angels, who knows! Just a thought :)

In any case, you can consider this a green light for fighter levels, but it would make a lot of sense to reapply for Spellsword once he qualifies. Sound good?

(In case the option was overlooked, you could always burn feats on the armor proficiencies if you didn't want to give up wizard levels. Random comment, sorry if it's obvious!)

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / Realized I never revisited
« on: September 24, 2017, 09:57:07 pm »

Realized I never revisited this after getting a red pen. Have not yet started a potential section for the Regalia (eg the Flail).

New text:

Like many before him, Hardragh son of Lunviq is a polarizing figure in the Mistral. Born to a community of hunters at the feet of the High Reaches, the current Tide of the North is no priest, but a Voice with a wry smirk and shattering bellow. Dismissed by some as weak (as one bound to the Stones, he had died and lived many times, and his ties to the gypsy of Leringard through their child net cool stares and accusations of dependency) and by others as a pawn for the dragon Snowtooth, Hardragh proved himself a canny player of a game that upended the board.

He reclaimed the Sword of Kings, enraged several devotees of Mist both low and high by forging a pact with Knad'radoniad that sheltered him, for a time, from attack -- and traveled the northlands preaching the dragon as master and Lady Doom as mistress. He arranged favors with the Stormbringers, rescued the Tide of the Southwest from Pyrtechonites, eliminated those that had stood against him in early days, and ended the power of Yashilla as Tide of the North.

Unlike her predecessor, Meghanna, who was driven into obscurity in her failed bid for Tempest, Yashilla -- who had once sacrificed Carocsa, an avatar of Shindaleria -- was devoured by a dragon. Once Dragoncalled herself, it's unknown if some distant stone ever called her back from Snowtooth's belly, or if that death was one too many.

For now, Hardragh's cunning throws of dice seem to grant him favor from Mist. However, the Tempest, her allies, and no small number of others in the Mistral look darkly upon him and his service to Snowtooth, even going so far as to lay at his feet the blame for a decline in the power of the faith.

Old text, for posterity:

Yashilla's story of ascension into the hierarchy of the church begins with her leaving her father's merchant ship at a young age. The start of her days as one of Mist's clerics found her young and eager to impress. In her early days, she often sought to bring the good of Mist's powers to the lands of Layonara. An older and wiser Yashilla has taken to focusing herself on the path of her faith. She often seeks the answer to what it means to be more in tune with Mist. The hierarchy of the faith is full of competition and strife. Yashilla was still fairly new to the faith when her first challenge came. Her test of faith was to choose between her impressions of what the faithful of Mist should exemplify and the good she personally chose to portray and what it means to actually serve the faith. Yashilla was forced to decide between her sense of morals and the Mistral. She chose faith'at great cost. After her part in the death of Carocsa, supposed avatar of Shindaleria, Yashilla held a unique position in the church. Her status with the Tempest and Mist had been elevated.

When time had advanced along with Yashilla's own personal talents, the Tempest called her to finish what she had started. Her next task would set her place in the faith amongst the Tides. The war between Shindaleria and Mist has always raged, and a then-unknown falsehood spurred the Tempest to strike out at the underwater temples of Shildelaria and lay to waste any claims to the sea that the Mother Ocean had. It was the former Tide of the North, Meghanna, who gave the false sense of security to the Tempest to strike out against Shindaleria's followers beneath the waters. Yashilla's role was to serve as a general, scout out a tactical plan, amass an army, and lead the march against Shindaleria's faith. The assault was a miserable failure. Yashilla's capacity to focus on the task at hand was always distracted by her concern with Meghanna's ulterior motives. Meghanna's ambitions were not well hidden and Yashilla found herself forced to make a decision' whether to continue to march ahead and let the hierarchy of Mist's faith take on new leadership or preserve the current leadership at the cost of a successful assault and potential crippling blow to Shindaleria's faith. Yashilla chose to preserve the current Tempest in power and exposed Meghanna. Meghanna was driven off and, with a vacancy amongst the Tides, Yashilla has been given the role of the Tide of the North.

Fixed Bugs / After your comment on the GF
« on: September 06, 2017, 03:12:59 am »

After your comment on the GF trap yesterday, I ran some tests on a handful -- three of the four I tested (the fifth had not respawned for whatever reason) were recoverable... the only one that wasn't recoverable for me was, amusingly, the one in the Warrens :P I haven't commented because I haven't gotten a chance to test if they change states (recoverable/not) after respawning (like if the not-recoverable flag is failing to apply more often than thought), or if there's some difference between them I hadn't been clever enough to discover, yet. Since it started with the Enclave area that really hasn't been edited in ages, I'm guessing it's still along the lines of Dorg's thoughts.

I'm not sure the Mosscrypt one is a respawning one or not - it's not on the list I grabbed, but anything's possible ! I've noticed a few doors named like they have respawning traps but that lack the scripts, too, so it can be hard to tell at a glance if you don't visit often. (Not saying that's the case here, just sayin'.)

Anyway, just an update to say that at this point I'm looking at all of them rather suspiciously :P Hopefully more, soon.

Fixed Bugs / Alas, memory fails us all
« on: September 03, 2017, 09:00:42 pm »

Alas, memory fails us all with time! :) If you're talking about the room with the Grandmaster (Strong Holy Trap), I checked it out and the trap on the door is a respawning one. One-shot traps are gone til server reset and can be disarmed or recovered, but respawning ones can only be disarmed... because they'll be back shortly. Unless "used to be recoverable" was 8+ years ago (who knows!), you may be thinking of another area, because this particular set of areas is aaanciieent and hasn't been touched in a long time.

Let me know if you think I got the wrong door.

I was typing an increasingly long reply discussing why I don't RP in other games even though I make "lore"-based characters, and what I think of Albion based on what I've read, but then I remembered the question and realized you really didn't ask and probably don't care :)

In short, not really. I've checked out an RP server here and there, but in MMOs RP always feels like an awkward interjection.

PS, hey! Nice to see you still check in now and again. Have you seen the Fortune System ? You accumulate it IG now, and can trade it for gold or XP (among other things). It makes it a lot easier to play an NPC-like shopkeep (ah, the profits from selling those sculptures are in) or a pacifist (learning from running clinic or preaching), without any DM intervention. Or just leveling in less time, which is usually what happens, hehe. Good luck in your RP searches -- RPers everywhere search with you :P

Fixed Bugs / I glanced at the walkmesh IG
« on: June 03, 2017, 07:03:08 pm »

I glanced at the walkmesh IG yesterday after getting the house number and can confirm this is nothing specific to an area but a problem with the tile, which is unaffected by overrides. I've not yet had a chance to look at the model, though I'm aware of the tile number in question. My assumption is that when the decor was ripped from the Bioware tiles to create the blank areas, the walkmeshes were not edited to match. The second issue - what I assume is the remains of a shop counter - wasn't visible by color, so that one will be needed as well...

The tiles in question are tin01_m03_03 and tin01_m04_03. (Incidentally, this has also been cause to notice an error with that tile group preventing that room from being used in new areas...)
