Fixed Bugs / Champions - Missing Requirements
« on: October 05, 2006, 08:06:13 pm »
The LORE pages for the Champion classes are incorrect and missing required information.  All Champions and Unholy Champions must be the same alignment as their deities. This is CE for Corath and Pyrtechon, LG for Vorax and Toran, as opposed to "Any evil" and "Any non-evil."  All Champions and Unholy Champions must have Weapon Focus in their deities' favored weapons.   Toran: Longsword.  Vorax: Battleaxe, Dwarven Waraxe or Greataxe.  Corath: Shortsword.  Pyrtechron: Greatsword.    I think the classes themselves could use some customization and tweaking, but these are the current requirements as is, and they are missing from LORE. Thanks.    (Edited for Pietechon)

General Discussion / Patch 1.68
« on: August 29, 2006, 02:41:44 pm »
Is out! You can check out the patch details here, but don't update until it's announced here, otherwise you will not be able to play on Layo's servers.

If you have updated, don't freak or anything, just revert to 1.67.

Roleplaying / Bindstones and Suicide
« on: August 22, 2006, 09:21:44 am »
I wanted to comment again on this topic, without also hijacking the previous thread again. There were questions that appeared valid with no answers given, and while I understand that reasons are hard to give in that sort of situation ("what do you mean why? It just is!"), asking "You mean you don't know?" is not an acceptable response.

The question posed was essentially, if the bindstones are truly an in-character system that saves someone from death repeatedly, why is committing suicide to get out of dire circumstances so unacceptable for a character willing to do it? This gets horror from a lot of people because it's not cool, but why?

The bindstones are not solely an out-of-character system, and thus characters will have IC opinions of them drawn from experiences. Do people respect death far less than they should? Yes. Is that an in-character opinion for some people? Also yes.

On the surface, it is not actually that big of a leap for some characters to go, "I've come back a thousand times already, and getting out of this situation is worth it."

It's hard for many people to respond to this line of thought, because ...wait, it has happened a thousand times. All they know is that it's poor taste and really just plain not cool. And it's not. But why isn't it?

Consider what the bindstones actually do for your character. When in danger and fighting (for your life? For your cause?), your soul is saved at the moment of your death--with cost to it--and with it you are reformed at where you were bound.

What is the difference with suicide? It is knowingly, consciously, deliberately ending your own life and welcoming death. It is a choice.

For someone who makes that choice, there should be no respawn, and probably no raising. In game terms this would be an insta-perm, no matter how little respect for death a character might have. Charging brashly into overwhelming odds still usually has a purpose, and almost all situations leading to death serve some reason, involve at least some protection and care for one's life--suicide is a blatant "take me" to the Soul Mother.

And so she will, or should. One could argue a lot about this I'm sure, but the fact remains that using the bindstone express as a suicide route is not a good thing, and the blatant difference between being killed by circumstances and actually choosing death seems to speak for itself.

Apologies for creating a new thread just for this branch of another, but I don't like seeing questions go by without at least some attempt at an answer. I am not a GM and do not speak for the team or Leanthar--I'm sharing my own observations that seem clear to me but will not necessarily be shared by others. Hope they made sense to somebody.

Leringard Arms Inn and Tavern / Performers wanted...
« on: August 04, 2006, 06:57:02 am »
Under-advertised Party at the Arms!   Looking for bards of all styles to perform for prizes at the next opening, whether with jokes, stories, instruments, or lyrics, or for all we know, a dancing monkey with a flaming tail and amusing hat.  Who frets overly much about entry fees and categorizations? Show up when the doors open and give a name and what you're doing and you can have your chance to entertain and spread your name...No slight-rhyme intended  This is mostly to have some fun and hear performances from people who don't often have the opportunity, and everyone likes to be entertained! To encourage contestants, there will be a few prizes awarded, even though I surely can't afford it! A few thousand gold, simple oak instruments, or a personal favorite, free food... or a belt by Triba that is rather on the practical side but is still made exceptionally well. Maybe a lion bag. Really... depends on if anyone shows!  If enough competition is offered, there will be better prizes to choose from for the victor, namely a rather graceful pair of gloves needed in any performer's wardrobe, stylish enough to make Freldo groan with envy.  Derrick, the owner of the inn, was given them by Ozymandias to in turn give to a bard in competition. Handed to and worn by Acacea for several years, they've still been kept in performing condition and are, let's face it, a classic, fitting all but half-orcs and dwarves, for whom they are probably a stretch and would look silly on, anyway.  (...And brownies, who could probably wear one as a dress. (Altered on request!))   If there are only one or two performers (or none, again!), we will hold onto them rather than give them away to a default winner.  If nothing else, halflings should come for pie, because who doesn't like the 10-day birthday parties?   PS, it's not short notice, this was here the whole time...really!   ((Start: 4pm PDT, 7pm EDT (whenever doors open..) Ends: 7pmPDT, 10pm EDT (well, you can still perform, I just won't be there.) ))

« on: March 30, 2006, 01:30:33 am »
Dawn of an Age is starting in an hour and thirty minutes (3am PST, 6am EST), not a half hour as the calendar says. There's an "oops" there or something.

(A good time to look over notes/logs, eh? Eh?)

General Discussion / Those on this morning's Sand Furies
« on: February 02, 2006, 04:56:51 pm »
Heh...right. Trust me, I was tearing at my hair when the connection dropped in the middle of the Acacea/Elder deal and was giving me the standard "invalid password" message that generally occurs when the service has been disconnected. (Which it had been.) The incredibly bad timing could not be had by just anyone, I'm fairly sure... It's a special gift of terrible, terrible time warping that I must have been blessed/cursed with at birth.

Pan gave me the fill-in, so we're going to figure out what went down with the thing they were dealing for. Or something. Sigh.

So, apologies all around to everyone in the party that had to wait around and then go on with much confusion about the whole thing. I'm not really thrilled about it, either.

Leringard Arms Inn and Tavern / Port Hampshire Trading School!!
« on: November 02, 2005, 01:06:00 pm »
[orange]-Acacea sits at the Arms looking at the stack of flyers she got from Triba, and wonders if she's supposed to put them all up, or just a few. She thinks about it for a moment, and figures it's better safe than sorry! And proceeds to make sure the information gets spread. Behind the bar and the merchant tables, beside the door, barely sticking out from couch cushions, and hanging from the back of every bar stool. It's sure to please the owner. What can she say? She's dedicated.-  [/orange]
The Port Hampshire Crafstmanship Trading School
Opening soon in the beloved Port City of Hampshire a new Craftmanship Trading School. Established within the confines of the Temple of Deliar, this new venue will begin teaching from Apprentice to Adept levels of training in the following professions:  - Alchemical Training

- Carpentry

- Ceramics

- Devices and Mechanisms

- Gemming

- Glass Shaping

- Jewelry Training

- Leather and Cloth Working

- Locksmithing

- Professional Hunting, Skinning and Skin Processing Training

- Toxicology
**Armaments and Weapon Making soon to come** Classes soon to open. Please send all inquiries and applications for both apprenticeship and teaching positions to Miss Triba Gues (Headmistress). Tuition fees will all be in form of donations to the Temple of Deliar and the Port Hampshire City Rehabilitation Funds.   -- Correspondence can be left at the Deliar Front Office --  ++ Teachers Wanted ++ [orange] _______________________  OOC Notes:  This is entirely RP School for Up and Coming crafters that will be led by Triba (My main character). Basically it will be a sort of Tutor/Student relationship that will take place in Port Hampshire. This by no means is a way to get free CNR to increase in crafting levels, nor is it a group that will get free items created in the classes. Basically what I hope here is to establish a much needed soul to the crafting system. I hope I get some willing souls to trot along here with me, both as students and teachers. Please PM me with any questions and try to leave this thread only for In-Character replies. Thank you so much. [/orange]

General Discussion / A question.
« on: August 06, 2005, 05:11:00 pm »
Acacea has posted a complaint in character, but as a player I would really would like to know why a character's casual conversation may consist of "Uh so, wanna go smash some orcs?" or something, and yet when an scary looking orc is chasing people through town swinging an axe, that's perfectly normal? I know people have complained about this before, that everyone is absurdly tolerant, but really, looking up to see the spectacle and then going on to chat about where you're headed off to, or walking up to halflings screaming bloody murder for help and saying "Yo" to the orc is just ridiculous. On the one hand, it was fun running around from it trying to get away, on the other, why is this cool with everyone in character?

I'm not trying to "flame" anyone, and am not even talking about the orc, but would like to know what their logic is in this situation...

Wild Surge Inn / To Halflings and Others of Proper Stature
« on: August 06, 2005, 04:49:00 pm »
A colorful young halfling sticks a notice rather low on the wall, and then sighs when she sees where the rest of them are. She drags a chair over and, standing on top of it, posts the message right on top of the others, using her dagger to hold it in place. She leans back to admire her work, shifts her weight from one leg to the other, and promptly falls off the chair. Looking around and seeing only drunks and the hosts of the Wild Surge Inn who probably can't afford to lose a customer who buys so much ale, she kicks the chair back where it was and walks out while scowling in a fashion you can only assume is supposed to be fearsome.

Recently there was a vicious attack on halflings by an orc with a giant axe- the townspeople, guards, and adventurers standing around did absolutely nothing except briefly look at the going ons, and talk about what pelt Johan needed next. This is an outrage! The halflings made a brave stand, but were forced to run for it when the orc bellowed something about heads being ripped off, and were promptly chased through town by the creature, even though it was made clear that they were just trying to get away!

Peace was attempted with ale, but the nasty bugger raised its axe anyway (a complete waste of a good drink, the biggest atrocity of them all!) and surely there would be no one to warn the town if a tall person had not walked up. To save them? No! To sell it things! This is utterly unacceptable even for the Madhouse and Inconsequential Door of Demons! Halflings and children are being run over by giants and attacked by orcs and when they call out for help, they are ignored and forced to watch the attackers being greeted with open arms.

Worse, they will take your ale and attack you anyway, and if that is not a breach of some sacred rule then I don't know what is! Fierce faces can no longer come off when in town, as it is not at all safe for anyone!
