General Discussion / OXen hassled
« on: October 05, 2005, 02:40:00 pm »
My character Jharl was just outside the crafthouse in Hlint and had taken the pack off his ox to get some goods. There were also 2 other oxen in close proximity. All of a sudden for a period of a good 2 or 3 minutes the oxen were scared off and running and  crashing into one another  .There was apparently nobody nearby or about ..Could this had been someone invisible ?
When I got done with my pack, I had to walk a considerable distance to find my ox again to reload the pack.
There was no harm done, but this was an extreme annoyance.

Tome of the Scarlet Hawk - The Journal of Jharl

* A worn and battered leather bound journal.  All the writing has been penned in a neat and careful script. It seems that the writer is either very new to this skill or being very meticulous ..or both*

I have arrived and entered this settlement called Hlint. It is a confusing place with all manner of people about. Such large crowds..and these buildings.. it is all so complicated, but with all these strange folk about there may be much lore to discover here.
I set up camp in some woods north of town, near a great stone tower. The first night I was set upon by an orc warparty.. they exist no more. The Orcs are numerous here as well so I have moved my camp to a more remote location.
I heard of a bounty offered  by the Quartermaster to go skin some goblins that harrass the town . The quartermaster seemed bored by the whole thing..it has been going on for so long it seem...the orcs and goblins are a common sight right up to the gates of town.
The town also has a crypt where they consign the bones of their fallen. Apparrently the dead inside are restless and sometimes become a problem.
I have met many warriors and such of all type but have not befriended any as yet. Some have looked at my hide armor and mumbled something about .."only a bar..bare ee en".. they did not say it with the honor a warrior deserves.

*another entry several days later*

My journey has become a little eaiser now that I remember my voice. Now more often than not, I quietly sing to myself when working, be it chopping wood or just traveling.
The old song of the hunt, and the work song.. They truly make my pack seem lighter and help my spirits.
I have begun to chop wood so that I might be able to craft a fine bow.

*another entry*

I have today met another 'bar bare ee en".. but not from any tribe that is in our lore. Her name is Sy'Ravenne . She has made a long journey to Hlint from across the sea, a place called, I think Dreager. She was summoned from her people to Hlint by a dragon.. I did not tell her I had the same vision. She has been here for many moon cycles.
I had a long talk with this warrior clad in strange rainment. She wields a fine curved sword that the locals call a scimitar. She spoke of  learning yet another strange blade called a katana. Her eyes were on fire as she spoke of being able to wield such a weapon ..could it be that powerful ?
Later when another came to greet Sy'Ravenne, I began to quietly sing our tribal song of greeting. Sy'Ravenne asked if I were a bard ..I said no, I was a warrior, but one that had a fair voice that I hoped to use to inspire in war and toil. She thought that this was very noble I think, and said I should seek out one called Geir. He has great skill in this.
Sy'Ravenne then enlisted me into a war party . We entered a cavern near to Hlint that has become the home of goblins. There are far fewer of that vermin in there now. It was good to be back on the hunt again, although my new companions fight in strange ways with strange weapons.
One of the members of our war party had black skin and white hair and wielded a great longbow. yes ..it was a drow ..the lore is correct: they do exist and they are more than a tribal legend now. This drow walked openly in Hlint and told me she was friendly..as the Scarlet Hawks always do, I told her that I held no prejudice but would make my personal judgment on her actions. She fought as hard as the rest of the party and this drow, as far as Jharl is concerned is steadfast.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Weaponmaster thought
« on: August 18, 2005, 07:08:00 am »
To me, being a weaponmaster, means that that you have concentrated on one type of weapons' training to the exclusion of others, and to me at least, at another personal character(Role playing)level, its not just any weapon of the class, it is his or her personal weapon of that class that is usually wielded..
Analogous to say a tennis star who will be great with any racket, but, in fact always uses 'their' personal favorite racket.
With this in mind, would it be possile for a weaponmaster to be able to have the privilege to 'name' their weapon ? (NOT asking for any additional feats or abilities)
As far as I am aware the only place the weapon name shows up is on my character sheet, but I think something like, for example, Weapon: Bane of Orcs instead of Weapon: Iron Longsword, would be meaningful in the case of this PrC.

I freely admit my ignorance of any programming difficulties etc. this might involve, or any other technical or gameplay complications that this might entail.

*A small notice in fine handwriting*

I have available one (1) set of Copper Chainmail Armor. Although this armor is used, it is a product of dwarven craftmanship and has been well maintained through all these many seasons of campaigning. It has served me well.

If you are looking for a way to aquire some better armor without coming up with cash this an opportunity to do just that.  I am in need of white mushrooms. Provide me with three (3) full boxes and you can be the owner of this chainmail.

Please contact me if this interests you

Is there a list or table of the class/cross-class skills applicable to the various custom Layonara classes ? Also the applicable high/low saving throws that apply when levelling in these classes ?

Thanks

General Discussion / Found goods
« on: July 29, 2005, 03:51:00 am »
On several occasions, my fledgling character has gone to various crafting workstations to hone his skills in one craft or another and found CNR apparently left on the station by persons  unknown. Twice I have found goods that were way beyond the ability of my character to normally acquire or possess. In every instance, there were no other player characters even remotely in the area. In these instances is it "finders keepers ?" , or does some other policy or procedure apply ?

Hlint, Mistone

Dad,
Hope that this letter finds you well. Although this letter is long overdue, I thought it best to let you know that I have arrived safely in Hlint. It is a bustling place with all manner of people. Never have I seen such a mix!  My funds are low at the present, but I have been able to pick up a few odd jobs. The local Postmaster has had me deliver the occasional urgent letter, not very exciting but it brings in some coin. On the advice of a fellow adventurer, I made a short roadtrip to Ft. Llast to enquire about some employment.  The commander of the fort could not hire me, but asked if I could help in restocking his weapons locker. I am working on this.
Hlint also seems to be plagued with an undead problem as well. Several of the crypts seem to have periodic reawakening of skeletons, zombies, ghouls.  On these occasions, a posse is put together to deal with the situation. I have thus done my civic duty and  ventured into these tombs several times.
When I first arrived in Hlint, I was befriended by an enormous orc (or was he a half-giant ?) named Glokk. Glokk gave me a full tour of Hlint. During our tour he introduced me to the the tax collector whose records had gone missing.  Glokk said that we should try to retrieve them, so we went into a rat infested sewer and eventually located them. The return of the tax records brought in a nice little reward. Glokk also helped me destroy a goblin scout band that had camped outside town. The local quartermaster had a small bounty on them that I was able to claim. Although I have trained long and hard with my sword, my efforts looked pitiful compared to this giant and his ax !
Given the uncertainty of the local situation,I have redoubled my weapons training in my spare time. My main focus has been with wielding this fine sword with as much skill as I am capable of. In addition, I have been making occasional short, local trips to collect wood and harvest cotton. It may be necessary to learn  a trade to supplement my income and this might be the start.
Although it is probably nothing, I had a most strange dream just before I arrived here. In the dream, a dragon said that I had been summonsed to help in the war against Blood...That mean anything to you ?  It has somehow been a bit unsettling to me. There is a local temple in town, dedicated to Ilsare; it is a nice place to go and meditate.
I think that I may be spending a good deal of time here, so if you need me, you can address a letter to me, " in care of  Postmaster Vale, Hlint, Mistone." Vale seems a trustworthy man and I am sure he will make sure that it gets into my hands.

Roleplaying / Changing Deities
« on: July 22, 2005, 01:09:00 pm »
How would /could one go about having a character change religious affiliation?
I'm not talking about a cleric but, in my case, a warrior. My thought was to have a character who, at the start would have a particular affiliation, but, as time progresses, he changes and "discovers" a new better path ...maybe leading towards becoming a paladin or other holy warrior.(Newly converted fanatic). Would this  be best served only through  a Character Development Qust ? Any thouthts on the day-to-day roleplaying of this ?

Development Journals and Discussion / Journal
« on: July 19, 2005, 06:06:00 pm »
These last few weeks have been hectic in the extreme. I have not had the time to put pen to paper, so this is long overdue.
I arrived in this place called Hlint about a month ago..and what a place it is!  Although Hlint is not the largest town I have seen, it is for certain the most varied. All manner of races walk the streets of this bustling village and although I, at times have gaped in amazement, most just go on with their business without a second glance. Human, Dwarven, Halfling, Elven of all varities, giants, and, I swear even a goblin.
Although I have attempted to continue my searching, I have not been able to put this town behind me; all roads seem to bring me back here. Travelling in these parts has has proven to be fraught with danger. Ask anyone and they will tell you : Don't travel alone. And yet I do. Foolish bard.
I've managed to pick up the various  odd job to make ends meet. Some are  mindless and boring but other's have been nothing short of  incredible.... more of those in a bit.  Though goods are priced reasonably, reasonable is dear when coin is shot, therefor I've tried my hand at crafting (mostly arrows) with very limited success..(more like continuous failure with a random success.)
I have, in my travels sharpened my other skills, and aquired new ones. I have learned to fish, this has made me self sufficient for food. My skill with a bow has become respectable, and I have learned, out of necessity, how to reload and fire quickly, with little loss of accuracy.  My skill with a sword is not so certain and I use sword and shield only if I must, but that has been all too often. I have begun practicing with a crossbow.. It is difficult to work the reload mechanism quickly, but I believe I will master it in time. As for spellcasting, my knowledge continues to grow. I can reliably cast some simple healing spells..I've had need to use them all too often. I have learned how to creep very quietly ...This has served me well and i will continue to use this technique. The few times I have forgotten this principle have led to personal disaster.

As to adventures.. firstly Hlint has some serious issues with undead. The undertaker has an insatiable search for some essence that is in a crypt.. I went, with much trepdation into those dark caverns to find him some. Although my quest was successsful, it was accomplished in fact by the powerful, willing warriors who, at a moment's notice, will brave these eerie abodes. These adventurers are a curious bunch, eager to help at a moments notice. In a crazy way they and I are all alike ..we all have some personal motivation that brought us here. I  also was able to deliver some high priority mail for tthe postmaster. He has more but that will have to wait a bit I think.

I took a solo trip to Ft. Llast., Krandor, and thence on to Port Hampshire. Although I moved as quietly as I could, it was a trip that I most probably only completed due to luck. I managed to kill a lone ogre along the way. It was a very near thing..had to spend 2 days in Krador recovering. When I left Krandor, I should have had the good sense to head 'home' to Hlint. Instead I stumbled across a party of 6 headed to Port Hampshire. in a rash decision, I went with them (the thrill of it all) . They had some initial success in the Broken Forest,  but disaster awaited me in a place I believe was called the  Battle Fens. Before I knew what hit me, (a barrage of arrows I think) I was in total darkness... the  Void.  It was not at all what I had bargained for. My soul was returned but I was a apparently now an apparition wandering Hlint. A kindly mage cast invisibility on me and told me to seek my grave. I hastened back there and became 'whole' again..at least I think I did..
The trip back to Hlint was much slower. I crept slowly home  through the Broken Forest  but  it was without incident .

The last few days have been equally perilous. I enlisted the aid of a some trusty dwarves to go to the Goblin caves near Hlint. These caves are a prime source of raw materials that are essential to the local economy.  The Goblins consider these same caverns sacred ground and endless expeditions have not suceeded in permanently  eliminating them. I was after copper.  I did not get any. I was cut down by the furious goblins in the deepest part of these caverns. Another soul wrenching  journey to the Void...
after resting a bit, I was then was able to struggle my way back to the caverns ..my companions were frantic.. but on to my grave I went. Foolish bard. I was cut down yet again. The void threatened to consume . I don't know for certain that I  didn't lose something that time..But..I was consumed with rage and delirious ..so the foolish bard tries yet again. this 3rd attempt was only successful due to the intervention of a powerful healer who unselfishly aided me.  I think this bard will leave the mining to others..

But yet I'm better now. The wanderlust consumes me again. When i passed through Ft. Llast a while back,a resident wanted some sort of essence of a Wisp. I've heard there are swamps to the west..maybe I can find a Wisp there...

Wait before I go ..had best prepare..I think It might be wise to make a Will ..after all the next trip to the Void may be 1 way..
