General Discussion / Hello!
« on: September 11, 2009, 02:36:57 pm »
Hello Layo :)

I live!  I have peeped on the forums and seen so many faces I recognize...I took a long break to cement a great job at a company I love and my husband and I bought a house so our son finally has a backyard.  Now that things have settled down?  Perhaps we'll see a bit of me around here.  I shall be writing again as well.

 Have missed you all!

It seems like it's once again time to address a commonly recurring issue that could be avoided if all players knew what was expected of them from the start and applied common sense to their role-play time in-game.

In the past week I've reminded several (new?) players through tells that they really ought not to be going through town in animal/monster forms because:

 1) The NPC's in those towns likely wouldn't be able to tell they were actually people and not whatever beastie they look like and thus would react in a hostile manner to defend their town if they could be repressented properly in-game to do so.

 2) Layonara is supposed to be a relatively low-magic world, where people who can shift forms or polymorph (as well as summon familiars, 'tame' animal companions, or conjure summoned beings, and any other magic ability) are not altogether common, again adding to the potential of a hostile reaction from NPC commoners.

So, that said, here's my idea: Why not add a "Common Sense in Using Polymorph, Shifting, and Summons, Familiars, and Animal Companions Statement" to the character application and approval process that works much like the Dogma Statements required for Clerics/Paladin? These statements could (and in my opinion at this point -should-) be required for players who wish to play Druids, Shifters, Rangers, Wizards, or Sorcerors.

Statement 1 - "I have read the rules and acknowledge that common sense dictates my character should not be in shifted or polymorphed form while within a civilized area such as a town, outpost, city or fort, with the exception of events involving DM interaction and supervision, and I agree to follow this common sense rule while playing my character."

Statement 2 - "I have read the rules and acknowledge that common sense dictates my character should not be accompanied by a creature (summons, familiar, or animal companion) that by its appearance would be considered threateneing by NPC's living in a town, outpost, city, or fort that I am within or about to enter and I will dismiss such creatures before entering such a settled/civilized area when I play my character. The exception being during a DM supervised event such as a quest or impromptu."

Statement 3 - "I acknowledge that even during a DM supervised event, I should expect NPC's controlled by the DM(s) to react accordingly to the pressence of myself in shifted or polymorphed forms, or to any of my summons, familiars, or animal companions."

My feeling is that if players are confronted with these common sense rules before they enter the world, they'll be more likely to follow them once in play, and thus preserve the feel of immersion in the world of Layonara for themselves, and everyone else.

I know it's two days early but I don't think even with the lovely layo-tolerant wife I have will I be allowed near the forums on Christmas day.

Curse your secular political correctness ...

MERRY CHRISTMAS LAYONARA!!!

General Discussion / Wanted to thank Plen
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:55:47 am »
Wanted to take a moment to thank Orth for the story telling event.  It was fun and imformative and his story telling abilities rival those of Ozzy.   The Lore stories are something I have missed greatly and Im glad he took the time to share them with us as a community.

General Discussion / Taking a Break
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:56:30 pm »
Posting here for general information

I will be taking a bit of a break from Layo as both a player and a GM for the next two months.

Layo has begun to take on the feel of a second job not a hobby or pass time.

This combined with a not so wonderful summer at my REAL job has left me tired, cranky and stressed.  I need time to recharge.

As of now, I have not decided if my GM break is temporary or permanant. I'll revisit that in November.

I will still be around to finish up a few things such as breaking in the new character approvers and planning/writing/scheduling and hopefully running the WL I have signed on for.

My presence in game and on the forums will likely be scarce for the first little bit.  My new computer will allow me to check out some other games and hopefully re-kindle something.

I'll still be on from time to time - but as my character just like any other player - not as Nova or Minerva.

 Cheers

 Minerva.

General Discussion / Merry Christmas All!
« on: December 20, 2007, 06:27:56 pm »
It's been another fun year as usual.

Thanks to the GM team, the builders, the forum administrators, the players, the factions, my enemies IG, my comrads as well, all the people who took time to RP with my characters and even to the well spoken gnoll NPC merchant in the Corath Temple.

You've all made this year enjoyable.  Layonara has always been the nice escape from my busy life and even though I only get on a mere two nights a week it certainly is worth it.

So once again have a nice safe and healthy christmas everyone and we'll meet again next year I am certain.

Best Regards,
Polak76

General Discussion / Artwork of Plenarius
« on: September 04, 2007, 02:18:19 pm »
I had a commission done for Plen, I just thought I'd share the result with the community.

I'm glad I'll always have this piece to remember where it all started, a big thank you to everyone who has shaped him along the way...

The artist is Carol Phillips, I discovered her work while I was doing research for the t-shirt web site and we have been working slowly over the last year to come up with something for Plen. I'm very happy with it :)

P.S. No he is not done yet ;)

General Discussion / Why I still visit the Forums
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:59:49 pm »
Some days you read the forums and you get a bit discouraged right?

This person not happy about this, this person not happy about that. One gets tempted to leave the forums pages well alone and just play the game. I get enough negativity at work, I don't need to get it in my play as well. I'll just remove forums.layonara.com from my bookmarks, I think i'll just enjoy the game for what it is ...

Which prompts my question to myself, Why do I still visit the forums every single day?

My answer,

The community.
I love knowing the player behind the character. I love knowing the names of DMOE's kids. I love knowing how different Polak is in RL to how his character is in game. I love knowing that Dorg, despite every reason to have lost it during his long reign as dispute handler, retains a great sense of humour. I honestly care about people's wellbeing here, Interia, Solarina ... I hope Nibor is okay. Maybe he's run off with Minnie Driver? How do I know we share an unrequited love for Minnie? The PM system in these forums. I like knowing that LordCove and I could be friends in RL, Sall's sense of humour and flawed nobility has to come from somewhere.

I love reading each and every one of lonnarin's posts, no matter what the subject. The guy is irrefutably a legend. I cannot wait to see Darkstorme's and jrizz's and Acacea's perspectives on new submissions. I love a submission where the player has invested the time and thought. I love Lynnjuniper's CDT for Rhynn, Fatherchaos' for Durthak, Scriptwrecked's for Vlanin, Dezza's for Leisa, too many to name. I love writing in mine. I purposely write provocative Trade Hall advertisements because I enjoy reading the responses OOC as much as I write them that way for any IC reason. I think it's great that Filatus and I agree on so much in these forums and yet our characters are on the verge of PvP every time they meet in game. I voraciously digest any discussion on RPing alignments and attributes. I was more educated by a forum discussion on global warming that took place on a thread here a little while ago than my accumulated knowedge on this subject from any other media. I love reading posts written in dwarven accents.

I think Honora is one of Layo's greatest assets. Everything she writes, I enjoy reading, and believe me, I know it ain't easy to write this stuff. Much harder than it seems. I put my hand up maybe 6 months ago to write some stuff and in that time have maybe generated 10 pages? This woman is amazing. I cannot wait for the handbooks. Which leads me on to her hubby, every post he writes I feel like clicking on the thanks button.

The owners/administrators, Orth, OneST8, Thak, the big L. They all have a bigger capacity for copping ungratefulness on the chin with a smile than I do. Thanks to you.

I love being involved in the various faith forums. I play one Corathite ne'er-do-well and, amusingly, one less well known Aeridinite priest. I enjoy questions of faith interpretation for both of these from people that have invested a lot of thought on the matter. I admire and respect Ed for holding and organising this huge store of lore in that head of his.

The Just for Fun thread. A little bit of flippancy never hurt.

Why do I still visit the forums every single day?

Maybe you have some of your own reasons, these are some of mine. Focus on the positive!

General Discussion / i know some people have been quiet of late
« on: June 23, 2007, 06:12:08 pm »
after L with the future announcement

but what we are all forgetting is we have a wonderful world still open to us and there isnt any need to panic thinking its going to leave us anytime soon

they made the announcement to give us a hey gang this is whats going on behind the scenes

not a heres whats going on the rest is dead now till then

yes some people didnt care for not be told
but as a whole this will only be much better

the announcement let us as a community know why maybe we havent seen some faces for a bit
and now its understandable

i know everyone is still reading the forums i have seen 25 to 50 people online from time to time when the server counters read 7

dont get sad
look at the new as ascension from the old
a layo without someone else saying what layo can be

but until thats ready and L and the teams have said it
we have many months ahead of ourselves to play just as we always have been

so go log in remember why you love layo so much
you love it because you can escape from the real world into the realm L has layed down at our feet to wander roam and help shape

so throw off your meloncholy and go log in
go see your friends
and remember
even after the switch  its the people you log in to interact with inside the big sand box
not just to play alone in the sand
