Roleplaying / Re: Intimidation?

Iosheka, that's just one method, and a reasonably common method, at least when dealing with two characters who both have a high Intimidate modifier. It's not balanced, though. As you'll recall at that session, the consensus was that there wasn't really any consensus, and to figure it out yourself, except on DM quests (when you roll what they tell you to).

In terms of Aura of Courage, I'd say that would give +5 to the Paladin's level check, and +2 to everyone he considered with him. (I.e. those in Party.) Nothing should ever give total immunity to it except catatonia.

Thanks, but I was told otherwise.  We're to use the same soical skill check for counter rolls.  Not a pefect system, but that is what we're suppose to do.

Thanks.  That was it.  I manually set my clock the night before the time change.  And I've been lazy about keeping XP updated. :P

ok so we really dont have a consensus on this. Both as to method and to reaction. Although the method SZ laid out seems very clear (I will call it the 3.0 method) it is still only one of three at this point (3.0, will, and same vs same methods). If a GM (or GMs) could weigh in on this it would help. As to the reaction, we have for the most part a common thought "you would be intimidated". Now WH's point above is a good one. The PC's are mostly heros ready and trained to face danger (except the evil ones which I dont know what they are). They are used to seeing a room full of nasties that could kill them and charging in anyway. So if faced with what they see as real danger and not just an empty threat (failed roll) would they not react in kind. Of course most heros are also smart and wont charge into certain death. So if intimidate results in a feelng that this person can and will kill you will the hero retreat?

I was told by Ice at one of those 101 RP meeting, who was told by Dorganath, that since we don't have the proper counter skill for intimidate that we are suppose to just use  intimidate for a counter roll.

I was told by a GM that to counter any social skill that you use the same one.  Say someone's PC rolls imtimidate.  I would roll imtimidate myself VS the DC of whatever they rolled.

X: *Intimidate check*
X: Intimidate check: 12+3=15
Y: *intimidate check*
Y: Intimidate check: 12+0=12
Z: X wins

Introduce Yourself / Re: A bit late, but meh!
« on: March 16, 2007, 12:28:22 am »
I have an hour or so to kill, so I think I'll add more to this already long introduction.

Lets see.  A bit more about me?  Okay!

Right now I just don't have time for a hobby.  Back when I did I enjoyed snowboarding.  It's been a few years since I've last had the chance to.  I suffer from an old knee injury that has started to really become a pain in the last few years.  So I doubt I could snowboard anymore if I had to the time to.

I do love to travel. Just this last week I decided to fill my tank and point my car east.  I had no idea where I was going, or what I was doing.  I just wanted to travel. :)  I've been to just about every State here in the US.  I've been to Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, and Japan.  Last year I was suppose to head to China for my birthday, but I couldn't get away from work.  I'm planning a trip this year though.  A few of my friends keep on bugging me to goto Europe sometime.  I just have no interest in going.  I even lost more interest after I saw Hostel. ;)

Nice to meet you mate. Your character is one of the few that Dur'Thak truely holds a grudge against :) It's interesting to wander about with you on those rare occasions.

BTW - you mentioned legal coder - is that anything like inputting massive amounts of scanned documents into a searchable database for attorneys? If so, I know your pain - I did that at Arther Anderson for a while before they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Yeah, that is what legal coding is.  Luckily I don't have to do much of it myself anymore.  It truly is some of the most tedious work someone can do.

It's certainly good to know there are a few Aniyvwiya's interested in computer games. It get's lonely out here as a half-breed Tsalagi :)
*laughs*  Tell me about it.  When people find out my race they tend to always treat me like some hippy-tree-hugger that should shun technology.  Or at least expect me to act that way.  It's sad, really.

I have no idea why but for some reason I pictured you with long hair. :P

Hehe, well I keep my hair short.  Normally not this short.  Last weekend coming out of the shower I decided just to shave my head.  All because I was getting tired of having to comb/deal with it every day.  I do regret it now.  It's just way too cold to have a head like this. ;)

I'll have to go back through and test it.  I know two maps on Firesteap don't work.  I just didn't bother to remember the names of the maps.

osxmallard already said Xora's Tower.  Firesteap this spell doesn't work either.  If I can I'll go though and give this spell a real good test.  Going to be a bit hard though.  I only have 1 7th level slot.

DMOE - 3/5/2007  8:59 AM  No....I don't want to pay rent because I don't want to have my playing style dictated to me by HAVING to go bash to pay a tax.
I couldn't agree with this statement anymore then I already do.  Not everyone spends all their time out on a bashing trip.. some PCs rarely go out and adventure at all.  My PC that is co-owner of a house falls into this group.  I'm lucky if I can earn 2,000 in gold per real time month with this PC.  One of the major reasons why I agreed to go co-ownership on a house was the fact that after buying it no other type of payment was needed, becides buying placeables.

I've read a few times in this thread that putting taxes would be a great way to drain gold from the game.  I don't agree.  We already have a great system.  Temple Donations.  If your PC has more gold then they'll ever need, then donate all if it and only keep what your PC will need to survive.  Now someone will come along and say, 'but my PC doesn't follow a god/ess', well that is fine.  They can still donate to a cause.  Anonymously as well.  I can't remember who or what church was doing this, but not long ago there was one that was taking donation to help feed/cloth orphans.  One of my own PCs that doesn't follow a diety made a donation.  He didn't have it to spare, but thought that he had it better then these orphans.  And he's not even a good aligned PC either.  Why donate you might ask?  He felt sorry for the childern.

People buy homes all the time and not live in them.  Some people may buy them for extra storage, some for a second place to live a few weeks per year, and some people buy more then one house to make some money.  Not everyone that buys a house on the server should feel forced to live in them.  Everyone has their own reasons, and they are just as valid as those that buy them so their PCs have a place to live.

This is way I left.  The so called "leaders" wern't listening to anything anyone was saying but a select few.  I would have left the quest a lot sooner then my PC did, but I didn't have a good enough role-playing reason to.  There were a few times I just went AFK during the quest, because I knew that it didn't matter if I knew what was going on or not.  My PC would just be ignored.

Thats how the chain of command works!

In an Army, yes.  Last I checked my PC did not join an Army.  Nor was one sent out from Dalanthar.  Aid was called and Adventurers answered.  There is a big difference between the two.

Thanks, Stephen Zuckerman, but I wasn't talking about myself.  People were ignored.  Do you really expect anyone to speak up when the last time they did no one listend to them?  No once did any of the three leaders turn to the group and ask anyone of they had a better idea.  They heard one plan and went with it.  That in itself is poor leadership.  If I tried that at my job my team would quickly lose respect for me.

What really annoys me the most is when the plan didn't work.  Instead of the leaders taking the blame they tried to pin it on someone else.  The plan didn't  work because it wasn't really clear what needed to be done.  Before a plan is executed a good leader would make sure that EVERYONE knew what they should be doing.

Like twidget658 said; A party that large can work.  I've been on many quests in the past with parties the same size or larger.  And most of the time they went smoothly.  The main difference between those and this one is the leaders listened to the input of everyone else there.  This one felt like someones personal CDQ.  Once their PCs made up their mind about something that was the way it was going to be.  No amount of input from anyone else was going to change their minds.

Why do some people not talk or offer suggestions? Once the self-proclaimed leader, not the one that was chosen by the party, ignores people and doesn't listen, people shut down. They know that their input or suggestions will fall upon deaf ears. What is the use?

When a person is leading a group, let them lead and support them, offer up suggestions, don't try to push them aside and try to take over. It makes people 'just follow' and not aid in the quest.

Against it.  Perhaps the perception is there that homeowners are rich, but as someone who is scraping up every gold she can to buy her house, and will be dead broke when she does, and spends much more time writing for the team than playing...

As others have said.  It's a fantasy world.  I have no desire to see taxes intrude here, or whatnot.  Deal with that enough every day.

Agreed.  My PC has maybe 2k in the bank.  Not every home owner is rich.  Even sometihng like 2.5k True is had for me to get.

Oh right Hlint will be missed.

Hehe us nature loving types are going to have to find their own place to hang out most likely.  Hlint was such a good starting location.  It was rural enough for any character to find a relaxing place to sit and spend the day.  Port Hempstead though.. I don't see my PC handing out there.  *sighs* So much wasted potential role-playing just gone.

So, Druids, Rangers, Clerics that follow a naturey gods; where will be our new "home"? :)
