General Discussion / You Will Be Missed
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:09:54 pm »
Jonathan Selmek aka Daren Valhaikor aka poohbear383340 died this morning in a fatal car crash.

He was a great roleplayer and really knew how to throw you a curve. His characters were well known and quite diverse from each other.

You will be sorely missed.

General Discussion / Group Looting, and Items at the end.
« on: February 06, 2010, 02:36:03 pm »
I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about Looting and all that fun stuff that comes at the end when the loot is gone over by the group.

1. Definatly assign a looter in your group... and contrary to popular beleive it DOES NOT have to be the rogue or the scout's job every time. The group should assign whom they trust with that role (would your character really trust that shady person dressed in all black stabbing everything in the back with the role of keeping hold of the money and items you might find?)

2. If you are not the looter, dont look at dead corpses. If the looter sees you do that and move on.. they may assume that body has nothing on it and leave it go as well. We have a system in place that announced EVERYTHING that is looted. So you really have no reason to look.

3. Set some rules at the start... be they IC or OOC... do it at the begenning so there is no grumbles at the end.
I would reccomend trying a Need Before Greed for loot drops.

What that does is, if the item in question your character wants and will use personally. They have dibs over say someone who wants it because they know they can make money selling it, they know a friend who wants it etc....
This IMO is only fair to those who wish to use it and helped earn it. Versus those who wont use it directly.

If no one Needs the item to use on the toon they are playing... the item then falls to Greed. Basically anyone who wants it, for whatever purpose can then roll for the item or take it at this point if no one else ask for it.

If anyone else has sugestions they wish to add please do!!

General Discussion / Looking for players
« on: November 09, 2009, 09:35:21 am »
Okay I'm looking for people to regularly play with. I need some continuity in respect to people I play with online. I have lots people I know and play with every once in a while. What I'm looking for is a regular time during the week. I'm looking for people who are available some time during 5pm - 10pm EDT. Preferably weekdays as my better half prefers me to be available for her every whim on the weekends. I'm also away from home during the week and my evenings get rather boring.

I currently have 3 characters:

Snezle Lempkin, Halfling, level 9 Rogue/Fighter

Buddy Tenker, Dwarf, Level 14 Fighter/Rogue

Beli Stonewill/Tenker, Dwarf, Level 22 Monk

I am willing to collaborate on making a new group with new characters if that is something that interests you.

Send me a PM if your interested in any way.

Rumour Has It / One Fine Afternoon in Port Hempstead, A Man Comes Singing
« on: November 02, 2009, 12:56:07 pm »
*The tall and lean bard returns to the fountain some weeks later, his red velvet coat now slashed and re-stitched and still showing residual stains of deeper red despite clearly having been washed.  He hops up on a stone bench, much in the same place he was when he told his tale of the will-o-wisp, and begins to call to people out doing buisness or enjoying the day.*

Come one, come all - a tale of battle and blood, of foes vanquished, from an eyewitness! Come, come and hear!

*A slightly larger crowd gathers after a short while.  He clears this throat, sings a quick scale.*

I would dedicate this to the fierce spell-slingers and weapon-wielders who took me into battle with them, and let a bard of little power see what bravery really looks like.

*He then sings forth in a deep tenor, his voice echoing across the flagstones and off the walls of the city.*

This day beneath Bear Island hills,
Before my light-seared eyes,
The ground awash in bloody kills -
We march forth to the prize!

*He drops a register for the chorus*

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

Pressing on through fur and claw, *He makes slashing motions*
Bearing wounds aplenty, *He holds his side and sags*
We battle on with firm-set jaw -
Five and ten and twenty!

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

Bugbears fierce with gleaming tooth,
Gather by their altar,
Holding forth our hard-won truth -
Still we do not falter!

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

We drag our dead and battle out, *He bends wearily, arm extended behind*
Victory at hand,
Ahead a shout and falls our scout-
We make our final stand!

Hold your ground give not an inch
Though lightning tear around thee
Hold your ground, do not flinch
Before us they will flee

One last battle by the door,
My companions falling round me,
My clothing soaked in battle gore -
With battle-horn sounding east!

*He raises his voice an octave for the last chorus*

Flee your ground, get out alive
Before they gather more
Flee your ground, get out alive
So we'll live to the shore!

*He bows as the audience applauds, and bows again and once more before stepping down and strolling toward a food vendor, still humming the rousing tune.*

Rumour Has It / Political wrangling across Dregar
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:31:48 pm »
The Sabre, recognised ruler of Liwich has come forward and made an amazing announcement that has been supported completely by the Regnant of Hurm, Saviar Morgensen and over the last few hours by all authorities across Liwich.

By order of The Sabre, Liwich has offered the criminal Gork a FULL pardon for all crimes and accusations made against him by lawful authorities across the world and free access to any and all places within Liwich itself.

The Sabre met briefly with ambassadors from Boyer, Sederra and Succession as well as with Rofireinite representatives in Liwich Castle. Rumour has it that the ambassadors were not happy when they left and in fact were extremely terse and unwilling to make any comments on what transpired within.

Following the Sabres announcement the ambassadors one by one declared that regardless of Liwich's offer to the criminal Gork who, if the Rofireinites are to believe, is dead anyway, their nations will still have in place a bounty and considerable restrictions in relation to the criminal. Each of the Ambassadors has cited the fact that Liwich has no authority to recant their own nations laws and charges.

In perhaps the most sensational news that has angered the Ambassadors further is that the Rofireinite representatives in Liwich have, with some reluctance, granted The Sabres request to drop all charges to date against the criminal Gork.

In the face of such a strange decision the ambassadors of Boyer, Succession and Sederra have angrily upheld their own countries laws and declared that should Gork, in the unlikely event, rise from his grave and be found within any of their borders he will be summarily executed without trial.

The Ambassador from Rael has refused to make any comment.

Many political observers feel that the increasing tension across Dreger in relation to the hunt for Gork was simply a precurser to an attempt to instill chaos and civil war across Dreger with the intention of providing Lord Rael an opportunity and reason to march his armies north to pacify his neighbours and instill his rule across all of Dreger. While this has no supporting evidence to date there are some whispering in corners that this is perhaps the true nature of what had been occuring. How the criminal Gork was involved remains a mystery but it certainly seems that he has the full support of Liwich at least.

Rumour Has It / Border wars?
« on: October 10, 2009, 07:37:53 pm »
Political wraggling has seen two age old enemies at it again. Units serving Liwich on the northern border have had a brief skirmish with Boyer kingdom scout units.

The incident was sparked over recent tension regarding Liwich's decision to close their northern border at Boyer's request to send military units to Succession to aid in the hunt for the criminal Gork.

Boyer claims that the criminal might have been responsible for the death of an eminant family in Bitterridge and the kidnapping of a young girl. Liwich claims that the supposed criminal Gork saved a number of their citizens from a mad mage in the city of Hurm and will not allow them to cross their territory.

The controversy has inflamed tensions and puts Liwich in a difficult position with its neighbours; Boyer, Sederra and Succession, who are all at present working together in the apprehension of the notorious criminal who, despite their best efforts, still remains at large somewhere in Dreger.

Rumour Has It / Traveling through Lor
« on: September 30, 2009, 06:20:19 am »
People traveling though Lor will notice an increase in the number of guards around the dock district, as well as the areas around the city gates.  Patrols consisting of five guards each are quietly making the way through the crowd.

They seem to take an particular interested in the tall and sturdy as well as people wearing mask, helmets or any other gear hiding their face from view.  People falling into this category are politely asked to state their name and business in Lor as well as searched for weapons.

If asked the guards will inform that they are searching for the notorious murder Gork as he has been rumored to travel through Lor, and that any complaints to the search are to be taken to diet member Angela Swann as the orders are coming directly from her office.

//ooc information
Each guard carry a whistle and are under order to use that before engaging any person trying to resist the arrest (by resist I mean offering violence to the guards) refusal to remove head gear will result in the person being refused entrance into Lor, if coming in by ship they will be forced to remain onboard and return to the city they arrived from.

If the whistle is blown the city gates will be closed and ships prevented from leaving, and of course guards will rush to assist in the capture of who ever caused the problem.

If any player should wish to bribe/bluff/intimidate or in any other way try to avoid removing head gear, I request that they contact a dm over the dm channel, as dc should be individual to each player depending on rp and so on.

Roleplaying / Two Pet Hates
« on: September 17, 2009, 06:25:44 am »
Okay, maybe hate is too strong a word. The word 'hate' implies a depth of feeling I normally reserve for those things that peeve me in real life, not my chosen leisure activity.

Let's instead call these two pet niggles. Yeah, that sounds better. Less vitriolic by far. Now that I actually sit down to write about it, if it were not for the fact that Mrs Pseudo was watching Glee on TV and there is not much else for me to do, I probably wouldn't even bother. That said,

1.
Please no forced emotes/feelings in character descriptions! Forced emotes have been addressed ad nauseum elsewhere for general roleplay but not (to my knowledge) for character descriptions, I am talking about the info we can read if we right-click (option-click) on your character.

You don't make me feel uncomfortable!

I don't think your gaze pierces me to the very depths of my soul!

Etc, etc.

In short, you don't make me feel anyhting, I decide what my character feels. How 'bout you just provide an objective narrative that describes what I am seeing and I'll fill in the subjective stuff?!?

2.
Helmets
Cowls
Hoods
Veils
Scarves
Niqaabs
Other

So you've chosen to take up the roleplay challenge of a dark elven (half-orc, tiefling, etc) character. Good for you. A really interesting dark history, century upon century of brutality, cruelty, conniving and treachery. All interesting stuff. Hey, lets not forget those pretty nifty mechanical benefits but, of course, you have the compromise of being hated and mistrusted across the world to balance those.

What's your point, you ask?

Be realistic with what another PC would be able to see of you under your all-concealing helmet, hood, veil, etc!! If you can see with enough clarity to fight/spot/listen/bluff/concentrate/search/etc without penalty from the depths of your face covering - there is a fair chance I can see enough of your face to determine skin colour, glowing red eyes, etc!

I will accept my character cannot see ANYTHING of your face (hands/neck/etc) if and when I can see your roleplay reflect that the facial swaddling is so extremely thorough that you are stumbling about the place, three-quarters deaf and blind.

You're playing a dark-elf. Accept the roleplay difficulties that come along with the mechanical benefits. A face/race obscuring hood panacea seems, to me at least, a bit of a copout.

PS. This is not directed at anyone in particular.  :)

Glee is over, i'm off!

Rumour Has It / Bandits smashed near the River of Darkness
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:29:46 am »
*Word has spread about an encounter between the infamous Black Knife bandit group and Succession Army units of the Countess's Fifth Elite Boulder Unit. The Countess's Units had been dispatched into the hills around the river of darkness and north of the Lake of Sorrows to investigate reports that the criminal Gork had been seen in the area.

The Army units located and engaged the remnants of the Black KNives, an infamous unit of bandits run by Grundorf who have terrorised the area for a score of years.

Initial investigations reveal that Grundorf had dealings with Gork before Gork, in a viscious and brutal act of revenge eliminated every one of Grundorfs men except a scout party which was returning to the burnt out campsite when the Countess's men fell apon them.

A thorough search has turned up no traces of the escaped criminal Gork.

The Count and Countess have now issued a writ for Gork arrest and sent patrols west along the main roads near where Gork was supposedly located.*

Ask A Gamemaster / RP or quality of RP?
« on: August 04, 2009, 12:22:36 pm »
A conversation with another player got me curious about this.  They said that they can sit and rp for hours and never get bonus RP XP from GM's.

So that brings me to this...

This is an RP server so we should encourage those that RP right?  I know it may sound silly for wanting a reward for something you should be doing.  But most go bashing these days to get those rewards.  Seems that we may want to go out of our way to encourage RP these days and not only on quest.

I know I used to get XP several times a week for sitting and RPing. There were a few GM's that would seem to make their rounds and hand out XP for those were RPing.  I think most of those are no long GMing for whatever reason.  So this question is really for the active GM's...

When do you give XP for those RPing and what brings you to do it?

Do you give it to everyone that is RPing?  Only those that are showing good quality of RP?

If it is only the those showing what you think is good xp... what do you consider 'good' RP?

General Discussion / For My 31st Birthday
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:45:27 pm »
I'm going to cut the cord for helping develop the NWN server further.

So, with a fresh new posting style, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

I've had a brilliant time with a great number of you, even the ones I've gotten really into it with.  I always thought I'd make a farewell post with the list of everything I built here, because it would feel like some sort of reminder to everyone.  It's a bit silly though, as for years and years I've tried to legitimize my efforts to this community, and overly so.  I think it stems back to my embarrassing beginnings here... but I'm no pyschologist heh.  I enjoyed building most everything I built, and I'm very proud of how V3 turned out.  That's enough for me this time.

I will always support the MMO team's efforts, and I look forward to the new game.

There are a lot of reasons for leaving, and I'd explain them... but the folks I'd really want to understand probably already get it.

So best of luck, I'll still be around now and then, in game and on the forums, and Dorg, I'll try not to troll your posts on balance too much.

And with one last challenge... the toolset is easy to learn.  It just takes time if you're going to make something come out right.  Time learning all of the placeables and tile options so you know the brushes and colors to use.  But it's not technically hard.  I challenge one of you, anyone, to step it up and legitimize all of your scrutinizing comments on the way the server should or could be.  Make 10 areas to a new theme, send them to Dorg.  Someone, anyone, impress Layonara with something new for others to enjoy.  Even if you know it's ending someday, soon or not so soon, who knows... build it because you care for the server today.  Take up the torch, as I know there are some people who have wanted to prove me wrong on some things - and there's no bigger crux to it then this.  Everything else is just forum posts.

Take care all.

Rumour Has It / A Panic in Vehl
« on: August 02, 2009, 04:36:07 am »

A panic struck the Port town of Vehl in the early hours of the evening.

It began with civilians on the streets exhibiting symptoms of extreme fear and panic, many rushing in a frenzy through the city streets or cowering in corners until the feeling expired.
This however, is deemed to have been a diversion for a more sinister plot.

In both sections of the city, it appears the water was poisoned with a as  of yet unknown ailment, causing the majority of the citys populace to fall drastically ill through out the night.

Symptoms subsided by early morning and there were zero fatalities, though Port Officials and the Rofirienties stationed there are making enquiries with extensive vigour to find those responsible for the contamination.

Whilst many of the citizens of Vehl were overcome with the recent mystery illness that swept through their number, one resident alleviated the suffering with a generous gesture of goodwill and kindness. Arkolio Salvorre of the Vault Banking Institution was seen to be distributing loaves of bread to those who were too sick to work during this time of tribulation.

General Discussion / Weeblie and the Raven Trading Company
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:19:58 pm »
I want to ensure the rest of the community that as far as we can tell, there were no benefits whatsoever to any of the other members in the Ravens.  While it would have been possible, as far as our logs indicate and our trust in the individuals, each of the other members achieved what they did on their own.

While yes they could have benefited from Alleina being a higher character then she should have been, there are no other indications of any transgressions and we will not be punishing the guild in any capacity.

The guild and its members should not be looked upon with any ill repute for what they have gained in spite of the membership of Weeblie.  It's not fair to the guild that this happened and I'm sure its other members are deeply troubled by this development.  This is a time when they should be felt welcome in our community.
