Trade and Market Hall / Auction: 249 Haft Lake, furnished
« on: March 25, 2008, 08:15:50 am »
*A poster goes up in Mistone, inside the Stormcrest Shack.*

Pyyran Rahth, inherited owner of 294 Haft Lake, Rael Kingdom, seeks to sell the fully-furnished home to the highest bidder.

Too long has the building gone unoccupied except by memories and dusty artifacts of adventures near-forgotten. Too long has this place, the very building consecrated to the Laughing Trickster, witnessed only somber silence in its aging halls.

The full furnishings, decorations never altered, were put in place and arranged by Hawklen Ancalime, notorious and high-ranking priest of the Irrepressible Scamp. Main features include a full bar (shelves and alcohol not included) and a library of bookshelves, placed throughout the home, with an altar to Shadon in a private chamber.

Bidding starts at Tr150,000, and will close in one month's time.

//Bidding closes on April Fool's Day. ;) Fitting, for a Shadonite holy place, eh?

General Discussion / The Four Stars Tavern is Open!
« on: March 21, 2008, 10:22:40 pm »
I'll be posting here whenever the Four Stars Tavern is open for business.

187 Haven City, in the back corner.

Currently 10:30ish EST, Friday, March 21.

It's Freas, so it's story-telling night. Come one, come all.

Prices to follow in their own thread, but they're roughly what an NPC would pay for the same drink.

Dicing games are Pips and Stars!

If folks show up, I'm liable to be on a while.

General Discussion / Great Impromptu!
« on: March 21, 2008, 03:41:30 am »
Just wanted to share with the class. Canislupis ran a great little impromptu earlier for a few folk that were spotted heading for the desert. Just caught us randomly in Fort Whatever, roped us in with a well-mixed hook...

Good atmosphere, nice balance between RP and hacking, excellent pacing!

If you'd had more time for setup... ;)

Still, an absolute blast. *Tips his hat.*

General Discussion / Here we go again...
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:57:17 pm »
Apparently I'm having trouble sticking around.

This time, my internet's fine, but I'm moving... Again. My computer, and thus my access to the internet, will be offline as of the 27th at the LATEST.

Turns out that Sara's even less cool about living in an area where gunshots and the coroner are fairly normal things to notice, than I am. Ditto, our roommate. So, since both of them refuse to live here any longer, I don't have much of a choice, myself.

Especially considering that Sara just spoke with the slumlords of the place, who agreed that if we paid $50, (that's 25 pounds, UKers,) and vacated the premises (with our blue walls painted back over, and the holes fixed) by the 1st of March, we'd be free and clear to break the lease.

Giving us nine days to have new places, be packed and gone, and have the place fixed up.

Now, while Sara has a place already, thanks to her grandparents (who didn't mind moving up the date of her move-in by four of five months), as does Robyn (again, moving up her move-in date), I don't. (Sara's grandparents refuse to let me live there.)

The roommates I'd planned for (old friends from Dawsonville) don't start school in the city until fall semester, and one of them still has to actually graduate highschool... So, they can't move just yet. Nor do they have the money to, just yet.

I work two jobs. One with whom I just started, and have just started shining in!, and another, the manager of which I hold a fair bit of loyalty to.

Sears, the first job I mentioned, I may be able to take a leave of absence from, to come back in six months or so - if all goes well.

Dominos, the second, I might be able to do something similar with, but... Replacing me won't be easy for them.

And with both, I need to give TWO weeks' notice, as a bare minimum...

While I have eight days before I need a new place.

Eight < Fourteen.

The solution is this:

I live with Sara for a week, as she'll still be working over here anyway and as such will be driving in this direction. We trade off the car with much trickiness and madness, to get to all three of our jobs. I hide from her grandparents.

Then, I move up to Dawsonville, resume my old job at Arby's (ugh), and save every penny I can before moving back to Atlanta.

When will I be without internet? Hm.

I estimate that I'll be without the 'net for a period of about a week and a half, starting in a week.

I'll keep you guys posted. *Tips his hat.*

LORE Bugs / Character Names with Special Characters
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:20:40 pm »
When linking from pages on the forums, (for example, in the Server Status,) there are characters whose names do not properly link. Daralith Del'Mar, for example, links to a page called Daralith Del, the content for which "does not exist at this time."

Is there a better way to fix this than simply setting up an auto-redirect from Daralith Del to Daralith Del'Mar? If not, anyone want to try finding all the characters with apostrophes in their names, and adjusting appropriately? *Chuckles.*

While the ease of using Textile Formatting makes it an attractive choice for bloggers, I feel that, in a Wiki setting, particularly when information is often listed in odd ways, within other formatting tags, it is a needless layer of redundancy.

On [lore]AboutMarkupSyntax[/lore] and [lore]AboutMarkupBlocks[/lore], you can see that there are several different ways of bolding, striking, super- and subscripting, italicizing, etc. While redundancy is a nice thing to have, the tendency of different people to use different types of formatting can be counterproductive in a wiki-style environment.

For example, some aspects of the Textile formatting interfere with the code of the VB-style formatting, and if one were to edit a page written mainly in Textile, he or she would either have to make the changes in Textile, or change whatever Textile code is interfering to the VB-style code.

Also, Textile can cause unforseen problems in perfectly good lists and tables, particularly when non-alphanumeric characters are used.

I understand that the removal of Textile formatting would require a rather extensive overhaul of many pages. However, I feel that the benefits outweigh the effort involved - though that effort could be put off as long as desired, with the Textile formatting simply removed from the Markup pages (or included in its own page, with a note that it would be removed at some point in the future).

Wild Surge Inn / The Four Stars Tavern
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:42:10 am »
Late evening, Haven City. Tucked back away in the hills of Haven City, lights shine in the windows of a large building. Two men stagger out, singing drunkenly and leaning against one another for support, making their way home through the night. From the building itself come the sounds of music, the light from the open door dimly illuminating a rough, wooden sign.

On the sign are four crude stars, surrounding the twin moons, the number 187 etched small in a corner.

Inside, the sounds of music and conversation float throughout the building, the long, central hall flanked by doors on either side.

To the left, the merchants' hall and lounge; a pair of independent peddlers selling trinkets to those who pass through, the man selling parchment and charcoal doing a reasonable business, while, separated by full bookshelves lining the walls, the small handful of sleepy-eyed children and adults are still left in the cushioned Storyteller's Lounge, listening raptly to an old man spinning tales of epic bravery and derring-do.

To the right, the cafe and bar, a few patrons still sitting around the tables near the front, discussing with concern the latest reports of gnoll activity to the west, over games of dice. The two at the bar, drinking away their cares, rock back and forth to the sound of the unseen gnomish music-maker, and don't argue when the fair-haired elvish lad behind the counter tells them they've had enough.

Even on this busiest night of the week, the business has been slim, but the tavern has been open only a month, and the crowd is yet comprised of locals. Far from the main roads in the city, the Four Stars doesn't seem likely to attract the attention of much of the traffic going along the eastern road of Mistone... But the small staff of only the few who live above it, the old man, young elf, and the handful they harbor, don't seem to mind.

Fixed Bugs / NWN Hints Inaccurate
« on: January 11, 2008, 01:29:18 am »
Description: Hints from the Loading Screen, while they do have Layonara-specific content, also have stock Bioware content, some of which makes references to things that do not exist in Layonara. For example, Gems of Light.

Location: In-game and on LORE.

Verified: I've noticed this four or five times, and I don't think it possible for it to be limited to me, based on my understanding of how the system works.

Reproducible: Take a look in the file that contains the various little lines. You'll see.

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / Redirects and How They're Handled
« on: January 11, 2008, 01:26:22 am »
Our LORE is a Wiki-type encyclopedia, which has within it categorized much of the information that a player could ever need. It has a great deal of our custom content, and many hundreds and hundreds (at an extremely conservative estimate) of pages.

Many of these link directly, offering no more difficulty than [lore]Pyyran[/lore] on the forums. One click, and you're there.

On the pages themselves, virtually all contextual links, such as in [lore]Cleric[/lore], are direct, as well. However, the second one tries to go to "Linking Pages" or "Recently Visited," or even the "Skip To" dropdowns, one is redirected first to a redirecting page, and then, after a given number of seconds (admittably scalable down to one second in the user preferences), redirected to the page one is trying to get to.

For example, Welcome in the dropdown, as you can see by clicking through, directs to a redirecting page, rather than the page itself.

I propose to remove this. I don't know if it originally served a purpose, or what that purpose could have been (if there was one), but I don't feel that it's doing much to help. It adds a few extra seconds between pages, which may not seem like much... But when one is on a slow connection, or one is navigating a large number of pages, it can quickly become frustrating, and is certainly unproductive.

--------

On a second note, I propose the inclusion of a feature similar to Wikipedia's.

Wikipedia has an auto-redirect feature from misspelled pages, or pages whose name is directly synonymous with the article sporting the "proper" name. For example, Soccer redirects to an article on Association Football (which is apparently the proper name for what is commonly called simply "Football" or "Soccer").

The interesting thing to note, however, is the little tag at the top. "Redirected from: Soccer."

Is there any way to include this, for pages that simply point at others, such as [lore]Drow[/lore]?

Also, is there any way to include support for redirection of misspelled words, such as Dorw (which I've now typed four times in this post)?

General Discussion / Orc Bashers meet Explorers
« on: January 05, 2008, 12:19:38 pm »
Right-o... The Orc Bashers and the Explorers need to meet up at some point, relatively soon. Additionally, I need to meet up with Barion before this.

What's good for everyone? I'm free almost anytime, apparently, though if Sears ever gets back to me, that may change.

General Discussion / My Apologies
« on: January 03, 2008, 08:45:30 pm »
This morning, during Shadow's riddles quest, my computer's keyboard port died, making my keyboard fail to recognize several characters... It was suggested I reboot, but... Well... When I did, I couldn't log on to Windows. @.@

So, now I have a new, wireless keyboard (that's horribly difficult to type on, as it's a standard layout, not the ergonomic goodness I'm used to) and mouse, which I'll be using until I can find my standard-to-USB adapter, and continue the use of my lovely, corded ergonomic keyboard.

So, my apologies to Mix, with whom I was trying to close a deal, and to Shadow and the questers, with whom I was trying to solve puzzles. Hope everything went alright anyhow.

From the travels of Pyyran Rahth:

One pair of boots, the Bear's Endurance enchantment placed upon them in the same manner as an alexandrite ring.

Little wear, sized for a dwarf or stout human, but enchantment seems to be in boot cuffs, so they can perhaps be resized.

Highest offer in one week gets them.

Development Journals and Discussion / Reflections in Silver
« on: December 19, 2007, 10:16:12 am »
Crosslink

Original App

Silver flashes from an angry gaze as the dark-haired man tears through his meager accommodations in the half-rate inn he'd quartered for the week, bits of rope, bandages, and little component pouches flying. With a muttered word and a flick of a hand, the half-full pack lying on the bed upends itself, spilling what remain of its contents onto the straw-ticked burlap. Beside the bed, on the only uncluttered surface in the room, lie the various disassembled pieces of a fairly well-made hickory crossbow... Sans one.

"Where in all the Coil could I have put that grace-forsaken trigger!?"

The man's musical voice does not seem fit to hold the frustration it quakes with, and is rarely heard in his rampage throughout the small room. However, after this outburst, the faintest of sounds tinkles like tiny bells in the air - a quiet, miniature giggle.

Freezing, the man's quicksilver eyes slowly sweep over the ransacked room, seeking out nooks and crannies where, now that he knew his antagonist, he was sure he would find it. Indeed! There! A movement, turned glowing blur, streaking towards the poorly-hung door and the crack at the top. Unthinking, lightning springs to the man's fingertips, and arcs out in the path of that sparkling winged thief, but just barely misses, scorching the doorpost and leaving the now-uncovered pixie unharmed.

Bursting from the door, he shouts after the fey, hurling tiny bolts of force as he chases her around the halls of the upstairs of the inn, cursing and jumping to grab wildly whenever he got close enough. But the pixie, clearly a woman or girl, stays well out of his reach, laughing at his clumsy human attempts.

After a few minutes of this, though, she grows tired of the game, and throws the heavy chunk of metal down at the silver-eyed man, starting to pull the mantle of invisibility around her as she calls down to him.

"Loli think Mercury take self too serious! Loli teach to live, eeeeeven if kill him!"

Left standing there, trigger in hand, Fortun stares up at the empty space where the pixie had been, chewing the inside of his cheek in frustration and bemusement.

"Mercury," he mutters.

"Wonder what she meant by that."
