Roleplaying / The Misfit Brigade
« on: March 18, 2012, 11:33:13 am »
Here's the idea I came up with during my vacation. It's based partly on some perma-death servers from the past, as well as mixafix's suggestion about level range.

The Concept

The world is rife with uncertainty and unrest. The common folk are struggling for their very survival on a day-to-day basis. With resources scarce, some are offering up the only commodity they have, themselves. Forced into situations outside the norm, some of them discover a tenuous link to the heros of lore. Some succeed in this new life, many more fail and return to more mundane lives.

An unknown group, powerful and well-funded, begins to take advantage of the situation. They begin gathering these misfit commoners into a cohesive group, imposing strict, some would say military, order. The result is a small fighting force, right now but a seed but with the potential for powerful growth.

What will this growth result in? Who is orchestrating the dance of this force? Good or evil, helpful or power hungry?

The Rules

  • Must be 1st level to join. The first month of play, levels may be gained at will up to 5th.
  • One level gained per month at most after the first month. The idea is to keep a tight level range within the group.
  • Each player may have up to two PCs in the group at a time.
  • Only one soul strand to lose. The loss of a soul strand will trigger the PC's inherent self-preservation, forcing them to return to the mundane life of a commoner. The PC must be deleted. This is meant to build in some turnover of PCs within the group. (Should this be changed to five deaths instead of a soul strand?)
  • No gear allowed beyond what is for sale in Center's NPC shops. Recovered items from drops are not allowed either. Magical items will be awarded for service and leveling.
  • All travel must be done in groups of three or more. This is an RP group, not a leveling group. Travel is unrestricted along routes and in areas that are non-combat (eg. travel between Center and Hempstead and Vehl is allowed so along as combat is avoided).
  • Grouping with non-Misfit PCs is allowed with the following restrictions: Three Misfits must be in the group, and the non-Misfit PC(s) must hire their services.
  • All expeditions must be put on calendar, with a follow-up trip report posted. (Details to follow.)
The Goal

To establish a framework that fosters adventure with an emphasis on RP and character growth, rather than levels.

General Discussion / Honeybee: Food for Thought
« on: March 07, 2012, 05:11:23 pm »
I'll be away from my desktop for a week or two so won't be able to get ingame but will have access to the forums. During that time, I'd enjoy thinking about what the next phase of Honeybee's development should be.

In my time on Layonara I've never requested a CDQ. Mostly because I feel that in a player-driven world you should be capable of setting your own goals and making them happen. I have enjoyed the CDQs of others that I've attended, and certainly see their value! For me, though, I like storylines I can accomplish without relying on GM interaction.

Honeybee's accomplishments and personal CDQs so far:

Making healing potions ~ She's at the point that the non-bodak potions are almost trivial; a few more crafted and they will be. This fit well into her storyline and kept her busy.

Baking ~ She's at about 40% on baking pie now, which fits her character well too.

Giving back ~ Her chests are a consistent sight in Center with occasional in-game ones in other towns. She considers them to be one of her duties while assigned to the Prunilla shrine in Center. They're fun but no one really needs anything out of them. (Or they don't realize they can take stuff for use.)

Healing ~ She's been on a few adventures as a "healer." Very fun and definitely the direction she'll continue pursuing. Kind of a farce mostly, though, since potions and bandages are so common. It's rare that anyone really needs healing on her few trips. (Edit: I'm sure if she were 20th level she'd be an awesome partner on trips as a healer; I don't want her to be reliant on levels, though, in order to be called "successful.")

So! What ideas do you have for other personal CDQs I might run her through? They should be things that can be (largely) done without GM or team assistance. I also like being in Center since that's where I get the most interaction and RP. Having to travel to Dregar for the quest, for example, would decrease the chance for RP. (For example, being promoted to Castle Mask's temple, while in-character, would not be fun since she'd never get to see you!)

She's currently 8th level and non-combat oriented; unlikely she'll take up a personal mission to wipe out the Red Light goblins!

Rumour Has It / Bears in the moonlight
« on: March 07, 2012, 04:19:43 pm »
Early one dawn, before the farmers awoke and after the drunkards are asleep, a rumbling may have been heard through Center by those that were light sleepers. A peek out the tent flap or shuttered window would have shown six bear lumbering from North to South, the full moon shining on their coats. Imagined perhaps. Best go back to sleep.

Ask A Gamemaster / Turn elementals with earth domain
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:47:50 pm »
Can someone confirm that turn undead works on elementals when you have earth domain? Should an 8th lvl cleric be able to turn "huge earth elementals?" I don't know the mechanics.

General Discussion / Silver Buckle in Mariner's Hold
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:11:55 pm »
The Silver Buckle is superbly designed; kudos to the toolset wielder. Really a ton of attention to detail with something for everyone, be they visitors or residents.

That property has some significance to me having been a late-joining member of the Freelancers. It is great to see the space still in use.

Wish it were more central (ie. Center) as it has a great kitchen. Perhaps with the Leringard Arms across the street, kitty-corner to the player run stores. *gasp* A player based town? But who would be mayor? Which religion would be able to afford the exorbitant rent payments and be allowed to consecrate the prime real estate temple? Ah, good times. No better RP than political finagling... and assassinations.

Ask A Gamemaster / Town Crier messages
« on: February 29, 2012, 08:29:05 pm »
I'm not sure what's involved, but I'd be willing to add "whispers" to the Town Criers vocabulary. Current happenings through the eyes of Honeybee. (This does mean that she may misinterpret some things given the snippets she hears and is told.)

[SIZE=18]~ Hickory Smoked Salmon ~

Wanted: Freshly caught Salmon and Hickory

Smoked salmon is a valuable resource for those in need. It stores well and it keeps the belly happy!

A separate chest for freshly caught salmon and branches of hickory has been set up in Center near Prunilla's Shrine.

The resulting meals will be made available in the food chest.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / CNR Skill Focus
« on: February 22, 2012, 06:22:33 pm »
Probably an idea for MMO, but would apply to current Layonara too.

I've always wished that CNR took focusing on a single skill into account. I'll use an old PC I have as an example:

Rolan's personal mission was to become the best rapier weapon master in the land. As part of his player-driven-CDQ, he only used rapiers crafted by his own hand. He never made any other kind of weapon (maybe daggers at the very start since rapiers may have been too high level). Naturally this mean a lot of failures and he could have leveled faster in weapon smithing by doing other items too.

While one could argue that making other weapons would have made him a more well-rounded smith, it could also be argued that his singular focus would lend him greater technique for the rapier.

The same could be said for the CNR cook that just made bread. Or the brewer that only made a single style of ale, or just ales in general. Perhaps the weapon smith that makes swords is different than one that just makes axes.

I'm not saying that everyone should focus on one thing; sometimes that's not feasible in a low player-count world. Should some consideration be given to the CNR crafters that focus on a single thing? Consider, if you will, that they are likely focusing solely for RP reasons. I bet if you ask them, their CNR craft helps define who their PC is.

Ideas for judging focus:
  • % of overall CNR XP gained in their chosen profession
  • Ratio of number of items made in their profession versus other things (eg. someone may decide late in their CNR life to do bread so it would take longer to get the ratio of loaves of bread to everything else made higher, but still be possible to do)
Bonuses for focus:
  • 1/2 ingredients required
  • % chance of ingredient returned on success
  • higher % chance at success
  • higher % chance at exceptional
Imagine the jeweler that only made rings. Now consider the jeweler that's made 100x more diamond rings than any other kind. Where would you go for your engagement ring?

Rumour Has It / Prunilla's Bountiful Harvest
« on: February 16, 2012, 05:48:53 pm »
Travelers may begin noticing second-hand chests set up in the poorer sections of Mistone's cities and villages. Sometimes a local citizen stands by the chest, offering passerby a free meal or a mild elixir of healing. In other smaller villages, the chest sits unattended.

The contents of the chest most often is fresh baked bread with perhaps some smoked fish or bottles of juice. In all, though, a small parchment placard rests within adorned with a pressed and dried clover. (Very careful inspection might reveal tiny fingerprints from the creator embossed in the glue holding the clover.)

General Discussion / Lower levels traveling with higher... do it!
« on: February 14, 2012, 06:48:19 pm »
My thanks to 'mixafix' for running point on a brief trip to Krashin. The xp for Honeybee was modest, but significant to a 6th level PC. We did not go deep into the caverns, but instead collected a few gems of that were ICly important to her and then retreated back to Mistone.

On several other occasions, Honeybee has accompanied much higher level PCs on their ho-hum gathering of CNR ingredients; she usually averages 1xp on these trips per kill. Significant not for the xp but instead for the "rp currency."

Thankfully she's a cleric of Prunilla where, "Their objective is not truly to cleave through hordes of evildoers, but  instead to annoy and distract until the stronger can deal with the  threats." Thank goodness (and pie!) for the stronger!

Layonara Server / Areas I'd like to see again as a PC...
« on: February 13, 2012, 07:03:25 pm »
There are several areas that I recall visiting once, or perhaps twice, that I'd really like to see again. Do you have any favorites that feel almost like personal quests to reach them?

1. The Great Tree - My PC Bumblebee visited there just once on one of the few quest events I ever attended. It made a profound impression in his character development, and I've always wanted to go back.

2. The "Grove" - I really like NWN worlds where the players get to make their mark. The grove is like a who's-who of PCs that I OOC always looked up to.

3. Way Down There - I honestly have no idea where this place is OOCly. I managed to hook up with a couple of the Freelancers as they began a huge dungeon crawl. It was way into the wee hours of the morning, when I could barely keep my eyes open, that we reached the "boss" at the bottom. I died in that final encounter, as I recall, which was a fitting end to the epic trek.

4. Belinara - Having never had a PC reach 20th, Belinara was always outside of my "level range" (back when there was such a thing). It is a mythical unknown land where, unlike Mistone, if you dropped me down in the middle of it I would have no idea how to find my way to safety.

Rumour Has It / Falcons outside Center
« on: February 13, 2012, 04:32:57 pm »
The small figure of Honeybee hops up onto the falconer's booth counter in Center, a worried look on her face.

"There are birds circling just North of here," she says excitedly. "Falcons!"

Looking to the booth minder expectantly, "Do you think they're yours?"

Rumour Has It / Happenings around Center...
« on: February 12, 2012, 04:53:36 pm »
The tiny lass in green, known as Honeybee to any that ask, has been heard inquiring of the many "adventurers" not only about the famine and animals illnesses, but also about aid for the local folk. Although her modest attempt at helping travelers with food is bearing fruit, in the way of donations, she wonders if there is not more that can be done for the community. Recently she seems fixated on blessing gems with Prunilla's graces in order to assist the working folk, since they have to toil in the fields that much longer with the lower yields.

Captain Trent ~
It has come to our attention that the animals and crops are unwell. We are asking you, as captain of the guards, to help us organize assistance to the people. If you would seek out myself, Honeybee, or Cyrus Whisperwind, we would be most grateful. The Druidess of the Forest of Fog suggested we seek "official" assistance.

Layonara Server / Continued thanks for player tools
« on: February 06, 2012, 06:03:57 pm »
I continue to be impressed by the usefulness of the player tools available here on Layonara. Specifically, the Quest Creation Scroll and the blank parchments. If you want to see an example of them put to use, just jump to Center on Mistone and check out the chest and NPC.

I'm happy any time to assist should you want to use them yourselves in-game. Examining the quill or question creation scroll gives very thorough explanations. I suggest trying them yourself in some out-of-the-way corner of the world to get the hang of things.

Thanks again to the creative server team!

General Discussion / "Center" is beautiful!

I'm very impressed by "Center" area. Great to see everything co-located with lots of variety of corners to RP in. Kudos to the designer.
