Also a little notice on that gear swapping is generally VERY frowned upon by DMs (at least one of them!) unless it's explicitly RP-ed out and it makes sense. Putting on a +100 save gear when asked for a will save is obviously not, and neither is probably jumping back and forth between a handful of skill increasing robes when the roof is collapsing and you need to do a search + spellcraft + dicipline roll combo in order to find a way out... :)

General Discussion / Re: Colored spell, class and ability icons. Hands too!

If anyone is curious, this particular stripped down version is pretty much what I and Akata are using.

I found many of the extra coloring to be highly annoying and pulled them out, along with some of the transparencies. The HP bar is of course also "fixed". The blue color is remaining and so is the "rainbow" background; although the background was darkened (a lot) so it's no longer (in my opinion) a burden.

After all, the HP bar is even more important for someone playing a cleric. ;)

Note: The files are of course supposed to go into the override folder!

The biggest question of them all is of course still: "Are the answers (soon to be) given actually the real answers, or merely representative of what would be common (perhaps not accurate) knowledge?" :p

General Discussion / Re: Linux Performance
« on: January 18, 2009, 03:29:32 pm »
One can actually be rather surprised how great performance impact (application launch and/or boot-up times) anti-virus program do have a tendency to inflict. Not talking about 1% or 5% here... but more like 50% to 200%. :)

I concur that NOD32 is excellent (the only one I have found to be good for the 64-bit Vista), especially if you configure it to scan dangerous executable files only (it's perhaps only because of my usage patterns that "scan everything" do give noticeable increased latencies, even more so for network file access)! ;)

ps. Running Linux without an anti-virus is in practice like running Windows without an anti-virus. As long as you have a firewall blocking most incomming things and you are not running any type of web/ftp/mail/you-name-it server program, it's highly unlikely your computer will ever be affected, even if you are using Windows. Unless, of course, the fault is simply "human error".

Server Rules / Re: Clarifying note on regeneration
« on: January 16, 2009, 10:03:02 am »
The current description sounds a little bit harsh, as it seems to be more or less impossible to get one's limbs back. It's highly likely that you would lose a limb or two if you were to receive critical amounts of damage in combat (happens a little now and then), and in that case, it's also highly likely someone would cast heal or greater restoration on you (not any of the regeneration spells). Since none of the spells (not even ressurection) can give you your limbs back once a removal and healing cycle has been performed, it looks like most adventurers should be walking around without some body parts. ;)

Or is the "restoration won't work" part only (truly) appliable if you are using a restoration spell "too late"? Too late refering in this case to the "last year" example.

General Discussion / Re: Unique Character Concept?
« on: January 12, 2009, 07:23:20 pm »
"Keep It Simple Stupid"-rule.

You would be suprised how "unique" of a character one can have by just keeping it simple.

My own character's (original) basic concept was an orphan elven girl who became a cleric of Aeridin, the naive sort of person. Pretty much one of those stereotypes which ironically made her unique among the PC population (at least from my own point of view :) ).

I personally think that all those dark elves who has killed their families, escaped from hell, has this great goal to conquer the world, and so on... just feel so very common, heh. Too "typical" of what all other players want too. ;)

Oh, by the way, did I mention that she's still a pure classed? While mechanically not being as good... going for straight rogue... straight fighter... or straight "majority of the classes" seem to keep one's character rather unique, especially if one continues with that on the epic levels.

I've found that character build has very little impact on the true uniqueness of one's character. Sure, creating an brownie will make you stick out per default, but will others actually remember your name a week after? Or does you just become "a random brownie"? Personality is what's important here.

The traits should be visible enough for others to easily snap up, building with a stereotype as foundation is generally helpful. Pure stereotypes are of course not good either, but if one modifies them a little, it could really make one's character stick in the memory of others. The Toranite knight who openly has this "women should remain at home and do shores"-view? Heh... I bet you wouldn't be forgotten for some time. :)

Answer to the removed message: Ah, per orth's clarification and the fact that script changes are not really done for normal CDQs, it's more or less a case of "no". :)

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Lawful-Half Giant
« on: January 12, 2009, 04:39:07 pm »
Because the lawful Half-Giant restriction is very strict, not like shifting along the good/evil axis, you should not plan for a shift towards lawful.

Their restriction is almost as great as the ones for Brownies, and most likely would require something perhaps on a WL scale in magnitude?

Per default, you can accept is as "it will most likely not be approved".

ps. As with some other things, the rule is a "no", but there are always the "exceptions that confirm the rule" (i.e. possibly WLDQs).

These alignments are restricted on creation only.

There's nothing preventing one from shifting from one to another by RP in game (except for Brownies which are completely alignment-locked; like if they would explode if they were to change to an evil alignment).

Roleplaying / Re: Intimidation?
« on: December 30, 2008, 05:38:31 am »
Intimidation ultimately boils down to a case of "Gentlemen's Agreement".

There are no easy and reliable way to make a counter-roll accounting for all the modifiers and what not, and just like Persuade. So, de facto, it's really only done ("should" only be done) in two ways:

1) vs NPC: Let the DM decide.
2) vs PC: Let the "defending" player decide.

If your counterpart (and yourself!) has any sense of fairness at all, I'm sure the matter will be handled in a satisfactory way for both of you. If not... perhaps one should avoid rolling such checks in his presence the next time. :)

General Discussion / Re: Video Screen Capture
« on: December 25, 2008, 07:16:07 am »
Fraps is the de facto standard in "recording" screen shots, though the freeware version has some serious limitations (the maximum duration of 30 seconds is a quite severe one).

Using an "analog loop" (i.e. cloning and connecting from the TV-out to a TV capture card and start recording) is probably also an option, and so would it be to start a VNC server and have a VNC client record the screen buffer, but both sounds like over-kill situations. The later is probably not even capable of giving you reasonable frame-rates.

It's the frame-rate problem that's really the show-stopper here (excuse the pun!). If I recall correctly, one of the more famous freeware AVI/MPEG editing/filter/converter programs (VirtualDub? FlaskMPEG?) should have some screen capturing capabilities, but it's not nearly as smooth as the good old Fraps. :(

Edit: Please note that all the comments are from a Windows point-of-view. It's highly likely that *nix has some neat X11/kernel module available capable of doing what you wish to do and that someone else could easily point you to. :)
