For the heraldry geeks:

Quartered, I azure, horse with rider sable; II and III argent, a ship sable; IV azure, a horse and rider sable.

Gulnyr that's close; this is what I had in mind but my clipart's inferior to yours :)

I'm not dead.
 What?
 Nothing. There's your ninepence.
I'm not dead.
'Ere, he says he's not dead.
 Yes he is.
 I'm not.
 He isn't.
Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.
 I'm getting better.
No you're not, you'll be stone dead in a moment.
Well, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
I don't want to go on the cart.
Oh, don't be such a baby.
 I can't take him.
 I feel fine.
 Oh, do me a favor.
 I can't.
Well, can you hang around for a couple of minutes? He won't be long.

Helllllloooo Pseudo.  I'm not dead either...

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Hlint
« on: December 01, 2009, 01:52:28 pm »
I agree.  Port Hempstead is just too large.

Part of what made Hlint work was the comfortable size, the spontaneity; at the right camera angle you could see most of the people in the zone, and by zone, I mean "by the bank". Those benches provided a perfect Cheers-like atmosphere. I looked forward to logging in to Hlint.

It is not the same. On those occasions I log Genna or Honora in it's a ghost town even if the server is busy. I might see someone making the long run from the bank through a transition to the next zone then through that transition to the hall itself, or making whatever transitions to the docks or their homes. But there is no central gathering space and no groups sitting around just chatting in Port Hempstead. And let's not even discuss Prantz, which is empty almost always.

Okay, okay, so that's my fault.  But still :)

If Hlint is not to be ever again, then it would help to move the transition to the craft halls off the main fountain area in Port Hempstead? That would increase the traffic in that area. With the splitting up of the home cities, though, I think that's not really going to fully address it. We got realism at the expense of enjoyment.

Another idea is to add Hlint as a portal destination for all the portals, or maybe Stormcrest. That would make it pretty easy for people to end up in a central location to group and hang out.

A flurry of wings and a squeal of joy catch the ears of some townfolk. Turning, they see the small red form of an imp flying east and fast, cackling delightedly to itself.

Chiming in as I just caught this thread.

Lots of great opinions here, and I have one to add. EPIC as defined by actions seems to be centered on quest actions and world impact. There is another impact that needs mentioning.

There are people in this game who have done more in their own quiet way to promote the world of Layonara than us LOOK AT ME types and I do include myself in that, at least when I played actively.

These people, and we all know who they are, raise families then play their children, or invite others to play relatives to expand the roleplay. They take little newbie half-orcs and take time to get to know them, run them around, and level them. They start guilds that carry on. Maybe they're not all over the forums or on every quest, but they have a huge impact on players returning to our world, and through their ig families they create a living feel.

And yet, often these people are denied opportunities to even try for WL because they haven't done the "right" things to apply. What do we reward? Time spent on world-changing quests, or people who change the world one ig family and one new player at a time?

My 2 cp. Back to my hole.

General Discussion / Re: What do you want from Layonara?
« on: November 19, 2009, 01:42:24 pm »
After reading chowbaby's post, I have to agree strongly with one thing: Layo discourages soloing, very much so. And while I understand the mentality (I did play a lot of EQ, after all), I can't agree with it anymore. Back in the day the prevailing wisdom was: groups form friendships, and friendships sell subscriptions. It became the model for most of the MMOs and games of the time, everything balanced for groups with soloing done at reduced benefit and great mortality.

I think we have to take a step back from that. Without pasting on player labels, a lot of us have reduced playtime due to families, jobs, other obligations of adulthood or school. And sometimes, you just want to log in and kill something. Or be able to complete a quest without having to send tells begging for help.

So, adding to the quest request (har!) I would add that soloable content would be a good addition to any future Layos, whether it be NWN or the MMO. It doesn't have to be everything, but there is nothing wrong with being able to pick off a few (insert mob of choice here) out of the pack for food/resources/the h-e-doublehockysticks of it.

The strawberry blonde woman nods at Jaelle's words.

Genna - Genna Brendimeere.  I'll find this Timulty and get to work.

She leaves in the same hurry she entered and heads in the straightest path she can to where the docks once stood.

A strawberry-blonde woman with a swimmer's build rushes in dressed in a blue nearly nothing.  She's wet from head to toe but is otherwise healthy and undamaged. She has a soaking wet dog squirming under one arm and deposits the pup with the first set of arms she finds.

The NWN Layo is very restrictive in character creation.  What we seem to reward and encourage are basic classes played by the "big four"; human, elf, dwarf, halfling. Read through the character submissions and that's clear.  And my point in another thread stands: in part because of this, we grow very slowly and have become rather alt-dependent to keep things fresh.  And those alts are often much more challenging concepts, to keep the game interesting for people who have been here for years.

I understand that this is in part to maintain the high standard of roleplay that we expect.  But what happens when we apply this to the MMO?  And how much are we hurting ourselves now, when this game is going to be important to seed the new game with experienced Layonara players?

Mechanically and realistically, NWN Layo is a killing game.  That's the experience that gives players that little rush of dopamine when they advance; that's what fuels the time between quests.  All of this has been discussed to death but it's still true; certain gods are over-represented because of the limits on the game and the difficulties of RPing pacifisim.  I would wager the same of certain classes, although I have no data on that.

I'm not sure there is a workable solution, but I have one to suggest.  Rather than focus on eye candy in any updates (should there be any), I think adding a slew of lower-level quests that can be done without killing a requirement would be good.  Temple quests for Az'atta, Shindy, Aeridin, etc, that folks who have a god in their deity field can do.  Quests for 1-10 that involve travel, discovery - the flags were an awesome idea but require a group (or good sneak skills) for most people who would benefit.  Some soloable material that does not emphasize killing.

Example: Az'atta temple in Audiria needs materials from Lan's Port.  Lan's Port contact needs a crafted item before he can release the materials.  Or a postage quest done.  Or for someone to use a subduing widgit (to avoid killing) on someone.  Sub-quest completed, materials released, Az'attan trots back to temple, experience and perhaps a minor reward item are dispensed.

My 1.75 True (adjusted for inflation).

Total derail but:

"Earlier versions of Toran in the Lore do not say "Toran prefers his most devoted paladins not to eat babies, unless they're really hungry and there's just nothing else in the icebox, or it's a dinner invitation they simply can't get out of. They absolutely may not, under any circumstances, do so without the proper silverware."

...still laughing...which fork?  Do you use a soup spoon for the soft bits?  Napkin in lap or in hand to prevent vexing blood stains on the Official Tabard?

*snort* *giggle*

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Deities and Classes Suggestion
« on: October 22, 2009, 07:18:49 am »
But to my original point:

For the NWN Layonara, there are CLEARLY some classes that are not allowed for some deities.  "Flexible" is moot.  Some classes are not allowed for some deities due to percentage of martial feats or whatever.  THIS IS FACT.

Why not specify this?  If not in a chart (which I felt was something that could be done quickly since it already exists for another reason), then in the class descriptions as a separate line item.

Yes, Layo does have too many rules.  We have gotten away from the Layo that I first started playing, sadly.  But my point is that if experienced players who are close to the source material do not see what is "obvious" to the character approvers, then clarification is needed.

I am simply trying to offer a solution to a problem, including putting time into it if required, rather than venting my spleen on a public forum.

Why, why, why why why can't I heal a cold?

All I can do is sit on my cot and sneeze.  I can't even lay down because my nose is so stuffed up.  And my spells that cure disease don't help either.

More chicken soup I guess.  At least Maime told me her secret - chicken feet.  Washed, of course.  Really gives it a golden color and some texture.

See, I'm even too sick to write anything interesting...
