Just for Fun / Second Skin

Okay...I just watched second skin the movie...its the one where they talk to people who are addicted to MMOs, fell in love with other players playing MMos, MMO gamers gathering for fun at meet and greets, etc. Mostly they are from WoW or Evercrack...but anyway, wasnt someone form Layo supposed to be interviewed for the movie or something?

I seem to recall someone mentioning it alooong time ago.

It was an interesting movie, albeit a bit slow. It actually reminded me of my old roomie and her boyfriend slacker that she met while playing EQ then invited to move in with us (i didnt know that until he showed up with his uhaul)...that didnt end so well. BUt i digress...

I was actually hoping to see who it was from our little community that was supposed to be in it, but was sad when i didnt.

Ask A Gamemaster / RP or quality of RP?

A conversation with another player got me curious about this.  They said that they can sit and rp for hours and never get bonus RP XP from GM's.  
 

 So that brings me to this...
 

 This is an RP server so we should encourage those that RP right?  I know it may sound silly for wanting a reward for something you should be doing.  But most go bashing these days to get those rewards.  Seems that we may want to go out of our way to encourage RP these days and not only on quest.  
 

 I know I used to get XP several times a week for sitting and RPing. There were a few GM's that would seem to make their rounds and hand out XP for those were RPing.  I think most of those are no long GMing for whatever reason.  So this question is really for the active GM's...
 

 When do you give XP for those RPing and what brings you to do it?
 

 Do you give it to everyone that is RPing?  Only those that are showing good quality of RP?  
 

 If it is only the those showing what you think is good xp... what do you consider 'good' RP?

General Discussion / For My 31st Birthday

I'm going to cut the cord for helping develop the NWN server further.

So, with a fresh new posting style, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

I've had a brilliant time with a great number of you, even the ones I've gotten really into it with.  I always thought I'd make a farewell post with the list of everything I built here, because it would feel like some sort of reminder to everyone.  It's a bit silly though, as for years and years I've tried to legitimize my efforts to this community, and overly so.  I think it stems back to my embarrassing beginnings here... but I'm no pyschologist heh.  I enjoyed building most everything I built, and I'm very proud of how V3 turned out.  That's enough for me this time.

I will always support the MMO team's efforts, and I look forward to the new game.

There are a lot of reasons for leaving, and I'd explain them... but the folks I'd really want to understand probably already get it.

So best of luck, I'll still be around now and then, in game and on the forums, and Dorg, I'll try not to troll your posts on balance too much.

And with one last challenge... the toolset is easy to learn.  It just takes time if you're going to make something come out right.  Time learning all of the placeables and tile options so you know the brushes and colors to use.  But it's not technically hard.  I challenge one of you, anyone, to step it up and legitimize all of your scrutinizing comments on the way the server should or could be.  Make 10 areas to a new theme, send them to Dorg.  Someone, anyone, impress Layonara with something new for others to enjoy.  Even if you know it's ending someday, soon or not so soon, who knows... build it because you care for the server today.  Take up the torch, as I know there are some people who have wanted to prove me wrong on some things - and there's no bigger crux to it then this.  Everything else is just forum posts.

Character Stable / Now Accepting Donations!

The Character Stable is open to the public for donated submissions!For all of you who have more character ideas than you know what to do with, here's one productive and generous way to aid the community. These submissions will primarily be for those folks who are new to the server and may struggle (for various reasons) with getting an appropriate character passed the character approval process. These reasons include but are not limited to:

• age
• unfamiliarity with the world
• language difficulties
• being new to RP
• being new to online community games in general

We would like, as a community, to help these folks out and allow them a way to come join us.
For those who are interested in aiding us here, here are a few 'legalities' to protect both you and the player.

• Make certain you are ready to release this character into someone else's hands! We want to let them develop the character as they see fit to do so. Please don't submit a character you are in love with the concept with because another's perception may be very different.
• Once you submit the character, all the edits will be done directly by the GM/CA team to make it immediately insert-able to the world (with the exception of the needed edits by the new player).
• Once you submit the character, it belongs to the stable and no longer to the submitter (this is absolutely necessary in case a future player would like to have their character be apart of the world changing events of Layonara).

As well we have a few rules that need to be adhered to. These are necessary in order to keep us from having to make repeated edits as the applications sit, among other things. Please keep these in mind when submitting a character:

• Keep it simple. For the reasons listed above, please don't create anything too complicated so that new players experiencing some of these issues will be able to get right into the character.
• Only use these standard races: Elf, Human, Dwarf, Gnome or Halfling.
• Please only use these classes: Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue or Ranger.
• Single class submissions only please.
• Please only use the following alignments: Lawful Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, Lawful Neutral or True Neutral.
• Feel free to include deity information, but do your best to adhere as close to the basic deity information as possible.
• No additional ear requests at this time (we may change this at a later date once we have the system up and running smoothly).
• Feel free to include a suggested stat line up
• Do not gear the submission towards any PrC intentionally.
• Feel free to use any non-time sensitive lore, in fact we encourage this to help the new players become immediately immersed into Layonara. An example of time sensitive lore would be writing about the dark ages in the biography of a human. Non-time sensitive lore would be something like including that a relative is the guard in a particular town or that an elf character left Voltrex and would not be returning.
• It probably goes with out saying that all characters need to adhere to the basic submission rules as every other kind of character, this includes content as much as mechanics.

That should about do it! It looks like a lot of 'rules' perhaps but if you think back to when you first started either here or in PnP gaming, you might realize it looks pretty familiar! Layonara Server / Congratulations Ycleption

As the world of Layonara continues to change, so to do our needs and methods. Something that has seen many changes over the years is the process of Character Approvals. While the policies, procedures and expectations have evolved, so too have our means of choosing who approves characters to play in this world. At first it was a position held only by GMs and only those who wished to take on the responsibility. At some point, we opened up the position to the greater community, and in that the application process also evolved over time. Having tried several methods thus far, we have decided to try yet another and directly approach a long-time member of the community for the purpose of having this individual join the Character Approver team, rather than open up a potentially lengthy application process to fill a rather immediate need.

Please join us in welcoming ycleption as Layonara's newest Character Approver. We believe ycleption's time, judgment, world experience and positive presence within the community will be an asset to the Character Approval team and, through this, the world as a whole.

Rumour Has It / Super-Octogenarian Retires!

Let it be known that Earl Frogstomper, Red Ninja extraordinaire and tough old miserly sod is finally announcing his retirement from the adventuring/mercenary tradition.  At now quickly approaching his 89th birthday, he has this to say.  "Man, it's been a wild ride, more fun than I ever expected.  But with mah wife dead, my kids in thar 60s, my kid's kids in thar late 30s and THAR kids just about ready ter take up the trade and find wives of thar own, ah know ol father time comin for meh.  Gonna trade in all mah gear and profits and pay off em back-taxes on tha family ranch in Brech, so we all keep with the brewin and pipeweed trade.  Ter all meh friends out thar, please feel free ter drop by and give meh ah holler.  Ah still got mebbe ah decade left in meh, and my family is yer family.  We got the whiskey brewin and the pipes lit up fer ye!"

His will indicates the entirety of his wealth and items will be going towards his family members, and for paying off old debts.  He shall now be taking up "an honest job" brewing for the dwarves of Brech and farming hops & pipeweed in Prunilla's way.  With over 40 able bodied grandchildren and great grandchildren to take up the chores, his retirement years shall be spent most productively, seeing to it that the "XXX Whooparse Ninja Brew" label finds its way across the lands.  And so, one of Layonara's most eclectic and energetic adventurers finds his retirement years in comfort, with over half of his soul strands still intact.  If only we could all be so lucky!

//been fun, but playing a human past 90 entails heart attacks, hernias and adult diapers.  Would rather go out on a strong point than see him whither down into feebleness.  Please feel free to use him as an NPC in Brech, all ye GMs.  And for any players interested in playing a descendant, let me know.  Likely when the MMORPG comes out, I'll be playing his great-great-grandson, Earl Jr!

Rumour Has It / Report from Hurix

*A messenger is dispatched from Hurix to both Ft. Llast and Huangjin with a letter for the people of the Toran church via the Priest Marl, and the Heart of Toran, Ortheus.*


To the faithful of the All Watching,

I send great news. The Fort at Hurix still stands. The reinforcements of the joined forces of those under banners of Toran, Vorax, and Rofirein have arrived and we have destroyed the Drachs. The Hand of Virtue has once again guided us to victory against the evils we all fight so hard against. The small vanguard including those that are not even our allies and friends were able work together for the greater good to help defend the fort until the army's arrival.

Many were lost in this battle. With great victory often comes great loss, and many brave men and women gave everything they had up until their last breath in the defense of what is good. May they be remembered for all time for their bravery and dedication, and the honor with which they died.

I request for those able to be sent to Hurix and the surrounding towns to help these people regain what they have lost. They are in need of healers for those that are wounded, and will need strong able-bodied men and women to help rebuild the damaged parts of the fort, and the homes that were destroyed by the enemy. The lives that were lost cannot be replaced, but we can do all we have in our power to help them regain the safety and security of their town.

We are still in times of war. The Dragon Cult, though we have won this battle, has not backed down from this war. The evil that emanates from their creatures is only a reflection of the evil that resides in the hearts of the Cult members themselves. We cannot spare our troops, but there are those who are no longer on active duty, or those not on military service. I ask you all to do what you can, give what you can, and aid the victims of this horrible war.

Raise up the weak and empower them. These people have been weakened because of such a long and ongoing battle, because of what they have lost. But their spirits are strong, and they are hopeful yet again. Let us join with them and help continue that feeling, and show them through our efforts and our generosity that Toran is with them, that He will protect what is good.

We will rejoice in this victory, but ready yourselves for the coming battles ahead. I have faith that we will be victorious. The Great Leader is on our side, and for that we cannot fail so long as we have the faith to guide us to strike true to the heart of evil. Look to Him for guidance. So long as the Light of Toran shines above us we will always pierce through the darkness of this world.

May the Light of Toran be with you all, and may He strengthen us all to serve righteousness in the months ahead.

Hi everybody!

This is the post to inform I am stepping down as GM. I'm not disappearing from Layo, in fact I hope, RL and remaining DTs permitting, to step up my involvement with Ark as an active and roleplay-enhancing World Leader.

About two years ago I applied for a GM position in order to enhance people's Layo experience, primarily in the AEST timeslot given poor old Dezza was shouldering a lot of that burden on his lonesome.

The main goal of my quests has always been to get players to really think long and hard about their characters. To put roleplay flesh on their mechanics bones. To make players really think about what their characters would do in a given situation, a given moral dilemma. To put them in a place, not always comfortable, not always where they want to be and then see what they would do and where they go. Often my quests have a simple enough premise but I tried to have them involve something that had folks exploring the depths of their character's psyche.

As I write this, I remember one of my quests, early on, that had people magicked into behaving in a manner the polar opposite to their 'normal' sex, class and alignment. This stands out in my memory as a very 'typical me' quest. Hopefully fun. A touch of madness. A strange situation. Minimal set-up A quest that (hopefully) by getting you to do something the opposite of what was normal, made you think more deeply about what was normal. By playing Lawful Evil for an evening, it made you think about what it really meant to be Chaotic Good the other 364 nights of the year.

Anyways, hopefully after two years there are some players who have a better picture of their characters as a result of my quests.

As to why I am resigning, no deep and dark discontent or disparaging remarks against any individual or the GM team as a whole to be found here! Of course there are decisions made which, as an individual, one might not 100% agree. Directions taken that might not have been the direction I would have taken were it my sandbox. Little niggles here and there etc yada yada but I can tell you there are no light decisions ever made by the GM team. No personal grudges. No favourites. No bias. Just a bunch of people that really do strive to provide the best server to be found.

Rumor has it their has been an increase in lion poaching for their skins.

With the decline in lion population a new breakthrough has been made with Werewolf skins.  

Rumor has it werewolf skins are more durable than lion skins as they are far more resistant to damage.

Additional rumors abound that these new werewolf skin bags have an odd characteristic that prevents them from being opened on full moons.

 ** I added this in response to feedback that people thought places to get Bebilith Silk didn't exist in-game. The original location for Spinning Bebiliths is still where it's always been for the last couple of years is still there.  It is perhaps not the most traveled or explored place, though in my opinion, that's kind of a shame. The only clue I'll give is that they exist in an “old” set of areas that used to be home to something very large before it was killed in the last campaign. Both the old location and the new one I've added are actually rather conveniently located to prominent cities.  So put on your explorer's caps and go some place you've never been!

Introduce Yourself / Travelling Minstrel sets up his tent!

Morning, evening, 'noon and 'night, ladies, gentlemen, halflings, dragons, orcs, ogres, fish, elves, and any combination of the above!

I'm Minstrel, travelling storyteller, serial RPer and eccentric.

Having drifted about looking for worlds in the huge void of the NWN cloud, I find myself drifting into here. I normally shy away from Epic levels, since after all, power corrupts, so the power to kill a dragon with a sneeze must be very unhealthy, but I threw caution to the winds and rolled in.

So! Good day! I'm a pretty focused RPer, only slack 'n' hashing when it's really the only option. I generally have characters with less in the way of backstory and more in the way of potential to gain backstory. Yet to get in game, due to the DM reviewers not actually having the efficiency of a coffee-fuelled gnome, but you know, at least it gives me time to ramble about on the forums for a bit and scare people.

Yes indeed! I'm terribly English to the point of it being life-threatening, and actually ate some scones a few hours ago just for the joy of enforcing a stereotype. Whilst I lack the top hat, monacle, and Handlebar Moustache +3, I make up for it in oddness.

I've been playing DnD since before we threw THAC0 out the window, and NWN since I threw my DM out of the window (Or at least migrated to a less nerdy part of England).

I enjoy short walks in the forest, writing, and gelatinous cubes. My pet peeves are badly-played Clerics and Greatswords!

Look forward to seeing what this world has in store for old Venny and his rampant shenanigans.

I recently stole some stuff on my rogue Telini... I was addressed by a DM and told to take care of this issue.. The guild I stole from is The Orc Bashers... I plan to make progress in addressing this issue on Monday or Tuesday when I have time from college and work...  Thanks in advance for your patience in this issue if in fact it is given....
