General Discussion / Just another player.
« on: August 26, 2009, 11:22:23 am »
Wasn't going to make a public post about this because I didn't think it was really that necessary, but I guess I should make people aware that I have stepped down from the GM team and will no longer be running any quests etc.

I will still be here as a player, as much as I can spare the time for, but sadly it's best I step down as I can't dedicate the time I used to be able to writing/running quests, it has been a lot of fun and a big thanks to the team for letting me a part of it.

Makashi.

General Discussion / For My 31st Birthday
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:45:27 pm »
I'm going to cut the cord for helping develop the NWN server further.

So, with a fresh new posting style, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

I've had a brilliant time with a great number of you, even the ones I've gotten really into it with.  I always thought I'd make a farewell post with the list of everything I built here, because it would feel like some sort of reminder to everyone.  It's a bit silly though, as for years and years I've tried to legitimize my efforts to this community, and overly so.  I think it stems back to my embarrassing beginnings here... but I'm no pyschologist heh.  I enjoyed building most everything I built, and I'm very proud of how V3 turned out.  That's enough for me this time.

I will always support the MMO team's efforts, and I look forward to the new game.

There are a lot of reasons for leaving, and I'd explain them... but the folks I'd really want to understand probably already get it.

So best of luck, I'll still be around now and then, in game and on the forums, and Dorg, I'll try not to troll your posts on balance too much.

And with one last challenge... the toolset is easy to learn.  It just takes time if you're going to make something come out right.  Time learning all of the placeables and tile options so you know the brushes and colors to use.  But it's not technically hard.  I challenge one of you, anyone, to step it up and legitimize all of your scrutinizing comments on the way the server should or could be.  Make 10 areas to a new theme, send them to Dorg.  Someone, anyone, impress Layonara with something new for others to enjoy.  Even if you know it's ending someday, soon or not so soon, who knows... build it because you care for the server today.  Take up the torch, as I know there are some people who have wanted to prove me wrong on some things - and there's no bigger crux to it then this.  Everything else is just forum posts.

Take care all.

Layonara Server / Grievance Change and Baton Passing
« on: July 27, 2009, 09:09:13 pm »
The current work load between Layonara and our other commitments to things such as family and job have greatly slowed the responsiveness to the grievance forum. With the onset of the Graceful Plea system, this forum has seen heavy usage by the community as a whole. This was anticipated, but perhaps not to the extent to which the community has utilized the option. Due to these growing demands of this forum and our other responsibilities, Dorganath and I have found it necessary to bring in additional help but also pull our involvement in this forum back to a large degree.

In place of our presence, Carillon and Twidget have graciously accepted responsibility of keeping a watch on this forum, and they will handle the day-to-day management of such requests. Dorganath and I will continue to work on some of the more complex issues as the needs arises. Were this the only 'change' coming to the way things are handled here, a public announcement would not really be necessary but it is not the only aspect of the Grievance forum that will be changing.

The primary focus of most GMs is to run Quests for the community. It is the criteria we are asked to meet when we apply. Some of us gather other responsibilities as our time as GM lengthens, but for the most part the primary focus remains the same. For Twidget and Carillon, Quests will still remain their primary focus as GMs. What does this mean, and why do I bring it up? This means, for the community, that handling of grievances and requests will be considered a secondary priority.  We are sympathetic to the wishes of the community to have their requests managed in a timely way, so be assured that all requests will still receive due attention and review, and that nothing will be ignored.

In an effort to streamline what will likely be a longer process, priority of all requests will go to whatever is most urgent and then to what is quickest to handle. In the past we have tried to work from oldest request forward but this is no longer going to be the most efficient use of time due to having far less to contribute. Issues such as an unjust loss of one's final Soul Strand, for example, will receive the highest priority and consideration, whereas the unperming of a long-dead character will likely receive the lowest. In making this shift, we hope the process as a whole will be more responsive to those needs which are more immediate.

I'd like to address the 'f' word (favoritism) head on here, because we all hear the whispers from time to time. In reality many perceived things of this nature are often a misunderstanding of the circumstances, and with a somewhat more subjective criteria on determining the order in which grievances will be handled, we can see that some may suspect they are being discriminated against, intentionally delayed or that others are given arbitrary preference over others. The selection of when or how the grievances are handled will have nothing to do with any personal preference among individual GMs or the GM team as a whole about one player over another. Anything that is quick and easy to handle or which is considered to be a more urgent issue will be selected first. All requests that require research of any kind are going to take time, into a number of weeks quite possibly. The amount of time passing will depend on what kind of research needs to be done. This is no way intentioned to punish or show a preference from one player to another, but simply just a consequence of time available to provide this service.

I am writing all of this to ask in advance for the community's understanding and ever continued patience when making a claim or complaint in the Grievance forum. We will continue to do our best to to serve the community with this feature of Layonara.

Regards,
~row

Rumour Has It / The Gates to the Great Oak are Locked
« on: July 24, 2009, 08:40:02 pm »
*Word makes its way to Hilm Castle first, then across Belinara, to Dregar and finally Mistone.*

The Defenders of the Great Oak finally tire of getting attacked by the giants and have locked the gates to the Great Oak.

*The reason for these attacks have been explained as adventurers provoking the giants to attack and then seek refuge in the Great Oak area to rest. The gaints then chase or follow by sight or scent to the Great Oak.*

The gates will be locked until this behavior ceases.

Rumour Has It / Super-Octogenarian Retires!
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:50:44 pm »
Let it be known that Earl Frogstomper, Red Ninja extraordinaire and tough old miserly sod is finally announcing his retirement from the adventuring/mercenary tradition.  At now quickly approaching his 89th birthday, he has this to say.  "Man, it's been a wild ride, more fun than I ever expected.  But with mah wife dead, my kids in thar 60s, my kid's kids in thar late 30s and THAR kids just about ready ter take up the trade and find wives of thar own, ah know ol father time comin for meh.  Gonna trade in all mah gear and profits and pay off em back-taxes on tha family ranch in Brech, so we all keep with the brewin and pipeweed trade.  Ter all meh friends out thar, please feel free ter drop by and give meh ah holler.  Ah still got mebbe ah decade left in meh, and my family is yer family.  We got the whiskey brewin and the pipes lit up fer ye!"

His will indicates the entirety of his wealth and items will be going towards his family members, and for paying off old debts.  He shall now be taking up "an honest job" brewing for the dwarves of Brech and farming hops & pipeweed in Prunilla's way.  With over 40 able bodied grandchildren and great grandchildren to take up the chores, his retirement years shall be spent most productively, seeing to it that the "XXX Whooparse Ninja Brew" label finds its way across the lands.  And so, one of Layonara's most eclectic and energetic adventurers finds his retirement years in comfort, with over half of his soul strands still intact.  If only we could all be so lucky!

//been fun, but playing a human past 90 entails heart attacks, hernias and adult diapers.  Would rather go out on a strong point than see him whither down into feebleness.  Please feel free to use him as an NPC in Brech, all ye GMs.  And for any players interested in playing a descendant, let me know.  Likely when the MMORPG comes out, I'll be playing his great-great-grandson, Earl Jr!

I have in recent time twice now encountered spawns left right at the transitions in the Great Forest.

Please if your in over your head and run (even though after the guidelines for the server you shouldn't), contact a dm or make a post in order to avoid causing needless pain and grief to other players

General Discussion / Joining the rank and file :)
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:28:00 am »
Hi everybody!

This is the post to inform I am stepping down as GM. I'm not disappearing from Layo, in fact I hope, RL and remaining DTs permitting, to step up my involvement with Ark as an active and roleplay-enhancing World Leader.

About two years ago I applied for a GM position in order to enhance people's Layo experience, primarily in the AEST timeslot given poor old Dezza was shouldering a lot of that burden on his lonesome.

The main goal of my quests has always been to get players to really think long and hard about their characters. To put roleplay flesh on their mechanics bones. To make players really think about what their characters would do in a given situation, a given moral dilemma. To put them in a place, not always comfortable, not always where they want to be and then see what they would do and where they go. Often my quests have a simple enough premise but I tried to have them involve something that had folks exploring the depths of their character's psyche.

As I write this, I remember one of my quests, early on, that had people magicked into behaving in a manner the polar opposite to their 'normal' sex, class and alignment. This stands out in my memory as a very 'typical me' quest. Hopefully fun. A touch of madness. A strange situation. Minimal set-up ;) A quest that (hopefully) by getting you to do something the opposite of what was normal, made you think more deeply about what was normal. By playing Lawful Evil for an evening, it made you think about what it really meant to be Chaotic Good the other 364 nights of the year.

Anyways, hopefully after two years there are some players who have a better picture of their characters as a result of my quests.

As to why I am resigning, no deep and dark discontent or disparaging remarks against any individual or the GM team as a whole to be found here! Of course there are decisions made which, as an individual, one might not 100% agree. Directions taken that might not have been the direction I would have taken were it my sandbox. Little niggles here and there etc yada yada but I can tell you there are no light decisions ever made by the GM team. No personal grudges. No favourites. No bias. Just a bunch of people that really do strive to provide the best server to be found.

Anyways, see you in game!

Rumour Has It / World Wide Shockwave!!!
« on: June 10, 2009, 03:57:28 am »
Tunar, Mai 10, 1450

As light creeps above the horizon over the northern hemisphere there begins a trembling deep within the core of Layonara. The reverberation begins as a dull and distant roar which gradually builds into a crescendo of sound that causes all the creatures from near and far to set up a raucous clamour as if in sympathy of the groaning of the earths core. As the ripple of divine power emanates from the depth of Layonara's being the sense of the all pervading denseness of gravity warps your senses and creates a sense of nausea coupled with a wave of disorientation. All around you no matter your location around the globe, the ground trembles, sound reverberates and every living thing vibrates to the core of its being. Slowly, mile by mile, hour by hour the effects travel until the entire being of Layonara has experienced the tremulous sensation.

Then, all is silent once more. The creatures of Layonara continue to call out in startled reverie for some time but those that can sense the earth, that are in tune with nature and manipulate the weaves of Al'Noth that permeate Layonara know that the earth itself is tainted no more, that its life's blood has been returned in a divine event witnessed by all alive across the surface of the world and below.

Words of praise are spoken by the lips of many as well as these two spoken in great reverence; Waazk'ah Lak'han, which means, in the ancient Dwarven tongue, Father Mithril, a name given to the one who restored it to the world and defeated the Balamti threat; Fenrir Thornaxe.

Just for Fun / A found lullibye {Squishy the Beholder}
« on: May 28, 2009, 01:43:45 am »
As the years pass, remnants of the presumed deceased bards' journal occasionally surface in the Aragenite temples. One such collection of pages seems to be a lullaby.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Little Sarun-Elly
Well she loved that Squishy lots
And brought him gifts of little paints
To make him up with polka dots!

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Together they would travel
Upon the lim lim's back
With wings held high
Like a dragonfly
Along the Silver Track

And noble elves and wizards
would all bow when they came
And offer gifts of toys and snacks
and laugh at their little games!

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Beholders live for ever
But not so little girls
And so eye stalks and many eyes
Make room for other toils.

One grey night it happened
And Saru came no more
And Squishy the beholder
He ceased to go explore

His eyestalks bent in sorrow
Tears they fell like rain
Squishy no longer went to play
Along the Silver Lane

Without his life long friend
Squishy could not be brave
So Squishy the beholder
Slipped back into his cave

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Had to chime in here to say that your last two chapters of the Dawn of Heroes series has been absolutely incredible.  The NPC interactions, plots, traps, encounters, everything has been top notch.  I particularly enjoyed how you set the scenes up in Hlint with the battles already in progress.  It Gave a nice sense of urgency to the whole experience.

Major, major kudos man!

General Discussion / Weeblie and the Raven Trading Company
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:19:58 pm »
I want to ensure the rest of the community that as far as we can tell, there were no benefits whatsoever to any of the other members in the Ravens.  While it would have been possible, as far as our logs indicate and our trust in the individuals, each of the other members achieved what they did on their own.

While yes they could have benefited from Alleina being a higher character then she should have been, there are no other indications of any transgressions and we will not be punishing the guild in any capacity.

The guild and its members should not be looked upon with any ill repute for what they have gained in spite of the membership of Weeblie.  It's not fair to the guild that this happened and I'm sure its other members are deeply troubled by this development.  This is a time when they should be felt welcome in our community.

Rumour Has It / Skabot Redwulf has passed away.
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:41:53 am »
Well, the Soul Mother finally caught him.  I have just recieved news from Az-Ptol that our longtime friend and compatriot Skabot Redwulf has passed into the afterlife at the hands (or axes) of the giants who dwell in the Forrest of Fog.  His body has been brought to Czukay's mansion in Prantz, where it is being prepared for burial, pending application to the Hall of Heroes in Willow's Weep. He will be buried with all of his possessions, as well as more than a few of mine that he had borrowed at the time, as would be his wishes.  Join me now in a moment of silence, friends of Skabot, and pray that he does not slaughter the Soul Mother, lest dead adventurers rise en mass from the graves in a mad necromantic stampede.

Farewell my friend, you shall be sorely missed.

General Discussion / A Sailors Christmas
« on: December 24, 2008, 11:46:30 pm »
Merry Christmas to those who are home and abroad, who serve and keep our land free. Merry Christmas to the service members who serve on ships, boats or serve on land you're in our hearts and prayers.

A Sailor's Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, the ship was out steaming, Sailors stood watch while others were dreaming.

They lived in a crowd with racks tight and small, In a 80-man berthing, cramped one and all.

I had come down the stack with presents to give, And to see inside just who might perhaps live.

I looked all about, a strange sight did I see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stockings were hung, shined boots close at hand, On the bulkhead hung pictures of a far distant land.

They had medals and badges and awards of all kind, And a sober thought came into my mind.

For this place was different, so dark and so dreary, I had found the house of a Sailor, once I saw clearly.

A sailor lay sleeping, silent and alone, Curled up in a rack and dreaming of home. The face was so gentle, the room squared away, This was the United States Sailor today. This was the hero I saw on TV, Defending our country so we could be free.

I realized the families that I would visit this night, Owed their lives to these Sailors lay willing to fight.

Soon round the world, the children would play, And grownups would celebrate on Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each day of the year, Because of the
Sailor, like the one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve on a sea, far from home.

The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The Sailor awakened and I heard a calm voice, "Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice."

"Defending the seas all days of the year, So others may live and be free with no fear."

I thought for a moment, what a difficult road, To live a life guided by honor and code.

After all it's Christmas Eve and the ship's underway! But freedom isn't free and it's sailors who pay.

The Sailor say's to our country "be free and sleep tight, No harm will
come, not on my watch and not on this night."

The Sailor rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours, so silent, so still, I watched as the Sailor shivered from the night's cold chill.

I didn't want to leave on that cold dark night, This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

The Sailor rolled over and with a voice strong and sure, Commanded, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas, and All is Secure!"

HONOR,
COURAGE AND COMMITMENT
