Trade and Market Hall / Selling - Supplies and
« on: June 22, 2006, 07:26:34 am »
A neatly-penned note is pinned to the Market Hall Bulletin Board:  I have available two full boxes of skeleton's knuckles, going for 200 gold apiece or 350 together. The following miscellaneous items are available:
  • A box of salt (120 gold)
  • 20 sheets of hickory paper available, going for 20 gold apiece, or 90 for 5.  (My stocks will replenish.)
  • a pair of matched rings, apparently by the name "The Designer".  These will go for 500 300 gold apiece, obo.
  • Raspberry juice - 200 gp/bottle
Contact me, and I will find you. //Hlint area for preference - I'd prefer not to trek all over.  -Kell Ereptor

General Discussion / Question about server mechanics
« on: June 16, 2006, 12:08:02 pm »
I remember reading in one post that you'd (World Designers) reached the limit of areas in West and Central.  Is this a predetermined number of areas you decided on to prevent the world from getting too unwieldy, or is it the hardcoded limit for module size?  (i.e., if there were a particularly neat/useful area, could it be added, or would another area have to be sacrificed for that purpose?)

Just for Fun / RPG Cliches
« on: June 13, 2006, 09:48:18 am »
Although most of you have probably already seen this, it's  The Grand List of Console RPG Clichés   Since it's console, most don't apply to Layo too well - but a few stand out:
  • #6 - an amazing number of characters (my own included) lost one or both parents as part of their backstory.  Sometimes that parent was killed, in fact, by the character.
  • #8 (Exception - the guys in the Wild Surge tavern)
  • #9 (Though I've yet to see all of them in Layo)
  • #12 (Although usually DMs censor those who are too rich and powerful - there can't be that many influential people on the planet, after all.)
  • #17 'nuff said.
  • #20 Staggeringly true, most of the time.  Sometimes people take the time to comment on it, and I do try to have my sword away whenever I'm in town.
  • #22 Brings to mind the first time I saw a goblin killed with a violin
  • #24 Where does the pawn shop owner unload his purchases?
  • #25 A necessity of the look/feel of the game, but seriously...
... and so on.  Actually, in consideration, a lot of them really do apply!  *laughs*  Have a look and see if you can't spot a few!

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Poison - It's an Edge
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:55:02 pm »
Now, I realize that for purposes of balance, people will shout me down on this, but I feel that it's a worthwhile point, so here goes:

<flamebait>
I think that poisoncrafting should be open to Rogues of all alignments, Druids, and possibly Rangers as well.

For Druids and Rangers, my reasoning is fairly straightforward - the number of toxins wielded by creatures of the wild (particularly in a magic-infused world) is amazing, so it's only natural that Druids and Rangers should acquire knowledge of the poisions they have to deal with; this would be both to gain a "natural" advantage (wild creatures use poisons, so why shouldn't they?) and to develop a more in-depth knowledge of antidotes, to treat those who run afoul of said poisonous beasts.  In addition, Rangers might find a use for non-lethal toxins in the humane subdual of wild animals in human-populated areas.

And now we come to Rogues.  Rogues, of whatever alignment, are opportunists.  Whether they're diplomats, assassins, swashbucklers, thieves, or scouts, they're always seeking an edge.  The stealthy Rogue will invest in insulated boots and coat his blades in lampblack to avoid the glimmer of steel giving him away in the shadows.  The smooth-talker will learn how to fake a swallow, remaining sober while his target sinks deeper into incoherent intoxication.  And every Rogue, given the opportunity, would make use of poison.  Certainly, the good-aligned rogues would employ poisons that are painless and non-lethal - debilatating, perhaps, and possibly unconciousness-inducing (sleep toxins), but still, anything for the edge.

Given the choice in battle, any Rogue worth his or her salt would opt to hurl a dart coated in something suitably debilitating at an adversary, then focus their attention on the remaining foe.  The Rogue ethos revolves around capitalizing on whatever presents itself, be it cover or a distraction - and a truly competent Rogue carries things far nastier than a simple numbing poison.  (What I interpret a STR or DEX-drain poison to feel like.)  Caltrops are nasty little pieces of work, and even a simple dagger slipped between the ribs is surely agonizing.  How much kinder, then, for a dart to fly out of the darkness and prick your skin, to feel the spreading warmth of its payload, to see a black-clad figure, blurring as your vision fades, step out of the shadows... and never to feel the bite of steel?

Given their chaotic (or at best neutral - say what you will, there's virtually no proper place for a Lawful Rogue) nature, when faced with a significant evil threat (say, an evil wizard who holds the key to an innocent village's salvation from a monstrous curse), even a good Rogue would be tempted to dose the man with something slow-acting and painful, then proffer the antidote in exchange for the village.

In closing, then, poison would be sensibly (and RP-properly) applied by Rangers and Druids, and is absolutely indispensible to the Rogue.  If necessary, RP-forbid the most ghastly and (if it's so desired) painful poisons to all but the most evil individuals - that makes perfect sense.  But poisons that are merely temporarily debilitating are the very lifeblood of the Rogue's character.  Let them make use of them again.
</flamebait>

There's my treatise.  Feel free to take it apart in the name of "balance", but I feel it would enhance both RP and non-RP for Rogues (and to a lesser extent the other two classes) to have this included.

Just my two coppers.

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / Just a niggling request...
« on: May 23, 2006, 11:31:22 am »
It's nitpicky and perfectionist, I know, but I hate to see the remarkable edifice which is Layonara marred by a typographical error:

At the top of the page in the LORE, it says "Welcome, to LORE [insert username here]".  The comma doesn't make linguistic sense.  It should either be removed altogether, or, ideally, relocated, vis. "Welcome to LORE, [insert username here]".

While everyday missives and IG communication need not be perfect, I'd like to hold the literature to a grammar standard. :)  Thanks!

While this may be old news for some (though perhaps not, as it only has three votes), I stumbled across this little gem.

I've been thinking of building a bard character, and was going to include her ballad as an attachment to her Character Submission - this would be a million times better.  According to the readme, composed songs are bindable (in-game!) to a bard's instrument.  How cool would it be to be wandering through Hlint, say, and hearing a snatch of familiar music that told you your bardic friend was playing?

Performances of new music at the Leilon Inn, at the Wild Surge... certainly preempting the local bard's karaoke...

Or even a bard showing one of his/her new songs to their travelling companions while they rest around the fire..  It might be a bit labour-intensive for bards, but nevertheless, the possibilities are HUGE.

Implementability, I'm not sure about yet.. I'll have to crack the hakpak open with the toolset and take a serious look, but it looks stable, and I'd love to see the addition of "bard studios" - I'm even willing to help with the code development to see them become a reality.

What does everyone else think?

Edit:  I realize that a number of people may have seen this, as it's been coded by the same genius who came up with the weapon proficiency hak that's been discussed with such fervour on this forum.

Just for Fun / First 10...
« on: April 24, 2006, 01:33:55 am »
Borrowing from _M_O_B_'s post idea, here's another... it's a bit of a chestnut, but still enjoyable and interesting:

1) Load a playlist of all the songs on your computer (or your favourite playlist, if you've got one).
2) Write down the first 10 songs that come up.
3) Post!

Mine:
------
1) Real Group - Strawberry Fields Forever
2) Tchaikovsky - Scene from Swan Lake
3) Great Big Sea - I'se the Bye
4) Tom Lehrer - Be Prepared
5) Mozart - Flute Concerto in C
6) Williams - Star Wars Theme
7) BTO - Taking Care of Business
8) Robert Spring - Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto (but on the clarinet.  So I'm a clarinet nerd.  So sue me.)
9) Great Big Sea - When I Am King
10) Moxy Fruvous - The Mitosis Waltz (yup.  Nerd.)

Let's see those playlists!

General Discussion / Time Compression
« on: April 17, 2006, 05:37:38 pm »
Sorry, I realize this is a very basic question, but I haven't been able to find where it's posted online - what is the RealLifeTime/LayonaraTime conversion?

The "Around the World in 75 Days" post commented that 75 days in-game is 5 real-life hours, which cannot be possible - that would mean that an hour of Layonara time passes every 10 seconds.

The reason I ask is that I have been keeping Kell's journal locally, until he can find the time to sit down and chronicle his travails so far - but I've been keeping Real-Life dates (foolish of me, I know.)  With that in mind, if anyone could tell me what the current time/date is in Layonara (the datestamp will give me a reference point) I can work backwards and accurately date all of his journal entries.  I'd find out the date myself, but I cannot find a sundial outside of Hlint for love or money.

In summary, then, time compression, and current date.  Thanks in advance!

Development Journals and Discussion / Journal (Kell Ereptor)
« on: April 09, 2006, 10:21:46 pm »
*The book is black, with the word "Journal" neatly penned in gold ink across the cover.  On the inside cover is the following:*

Well met!  I am Kell Ereptor, and this is my journal.  Now, there are two reasons you might be reading this.  The first, and far more fortunate situation would have you reading the words I've penned with my permission.  If this is the case, reader, welcome.

The other, and much more unfortunate situation would involve the theft of the book, and your illict perusal of the contents.  If this is the case, gentle reader, congratulations on doing so without my notice - you must be skilled.  But think on this:  no matter how skilled you are, or how fast you may run, there is nowhere on Layonara you can hide.  I will find you.   And I will take not only my book, but my retribution.  Think on that, before you sleep each night.

Now, then, regardless of your situation, dear reader, enjoy the humble pen-scratchings of a ne'er-do-well, a thief, a monster, and a fisherman.  (No one can be all bad, after all.)
