Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Why is CN one of the easiest alignments to rp

I have been playing Akhadie and I have been rping him in the way that just comes naturally to the character and Chaotic neutral seems to fit him.

Among the rules you're expected to follow in Layonara is the fact that you are required to play the alignment for which your character is approved, pending an approved change in alignment.  If you are incapable of playing Akhadie as Chaotic Good, then you should have waited to submit him when you qualified for a different alignment.

Quote
Akhadie is independent but realistic as he recognizes the need for other people. That is a responsible CN character.

That's true.  As covered extensively above, however, despite the fact that it might be accurate roleplaying, it has no bearing on player responsibility.

Quote
Another problem I'm having is I try to do things and all I'm ever getting is everyone screaming you can't do this you have to wait and I just want to play can't there be a system for CN rule where a player rps with a DM or something like that.

As covered above, these are the rules.  Patience is one of the things required of new players.  If you have a criticism of the rules, you're welcome to voice it, but couching it as people 'screaming' doesn't paint the criticism in a great light.  If you'd like to suggest an alternative system, lay it out plainly... but be prepared to accept a "no", since everyone in Layonara is subjected to the same rules, and they have worked well.

Also here is where it says it is hard:

Chaotic neutral is a difficult alignment to play and I want to make sure it is role played correctly.

-Leanthar

it is right there next to the rule in the lore.

Note "to play".  As above, there is a difference between "roleplaying" an alignment, and "playing" it.  Player-side responsibility is the concern, not any difficulty inherent to the alignment.

Layonara's a great place, with great lore, incredible depth, and, frankly, neat mechanics.  But there are rules.

We never indicated that it was particularly hard to play, Eegxeta.  It is hard to play responsibly.

A CN or Evil character could justifiably be said to be out for themselves, but it's not a license to do whatever you want.  That could be construed as griefing or simply irresponsible play, which would be detrimental to the community as a whole.  The restriction is there to better allow the GM/CA team to judge whether a player is versed enough with Layonaran lore and able to handle the responsibility involved in playing the alignment accurately but without making others' play less fun.

I would also disagree that True Neutral is the hardest alignment to play.  Lawful Neutral or Neutral Evil I would both judge as more difficult alignments; the first because you are obliged to follow a moral code but not to necessarily instinctively do the 'heroic' thing, the second because of the complications that can arise from playing a truly Evil character in a game where cooperation is necessary.

Regardless, as I said, it's not a matter of the "difficulty" of playing a given alignment that determined the alignment rules.

Edit: Hellblazer makes a good point as well - being one step away from CE does make it a more difficult line to tread.

For instance, Fort Velensk is now Fort Vehl.

I actually cannot remember which wood was the Dire Wood.

A small creature that rides with a character is one thing (and the monkey was as a result of a quest).  An intelligent, dangerous creature is quite another.  It would be akin to saying that you have a posse of armed guards with you at all times, other people simply cannot see them.

That notwithstanding, as Dorganath pointed out, it would be unlikely that a satyr would wish to loyally help, rather than trick, an inexperienced Wemic.

The requirement is, in fact, increased in Layonara.

It should also be pointed out (as it has, from time to time) that Layonara is not D&D.  We use many of the same rules, but the NWN version of Layonara works from NWN's approximation of D&D's rules.

So Darkvision is defined by NWN's rules, as is low light vision.  This isn't to say that they couldn't be better, but their definition varies from the stock D&D definition.

It should be noted that the necessary ingredients for the NWN Craft Traps skill are not present in-game.

(Similarly, Craft Wand and Brew Potion.)

It's also worth noting that Rogues have a number of disadvantages (low hitpoints, low saves, no armour) that the increase in skill points is meant to offset.

Every class has its plusses and minuses.

Bear in mind that caves, more often than not, aren't entirely closed to the sky.  Gaps in the rock (and the mouth of the cave) let in shafts of light.

Some caves (for example, the Red Light caves near Hlint) are lit by unexplained, magical light sources.  Others, populated by various intelligent creatures, are lit by explained magical or mundane light sources; the creatures that live in the caves (in those cases) have to be able to see as well!

Crypts that are still relatively active are generally lit with torches or sconces enchanted with Continual Flame spells for the benefit of visitors (even if restless undead make visitation a risky business).  Certain caves and crypts are less well-lit, but they have different occupants and are somewhat off the beaten path.

Hope that helps!

In many countries, there are harvest festivals that are similar in many respects to Thanksgiving - but as far as I know, the US and Canada are the only ones with the particular format identified as "Thanksgiving".

(Though we in the Great White North had our Thanksgiving a month and a bit ago, so enjoy your holiday, Yankees!)

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Make disarm trap a ranger skill too
« on: November 23, 2011, 01:08:27 am »
What Stephen said.

I would like to add the caveat that Rangers can be back-to-nature treehugger types.  It's just not required.  Rangers of most stripes would frown on wholesale destruction of a natural region, because that's their turf.  But trapping?  No problem.

You can construct traps in the Craft Hall through Tinking.  It will take some practice, of course, so you might also look into purchasing them from others.  They also drop fairly frequently from slain enemies - and what better thing to do than use them on the very adversaries who would have used them against you?

Rangers (as with every class) can take Disable Trap as a cross-class skill, and get a +2 Synergy Bonus from a high Set Trap skill (which, really, is what you're talking about in terms of being able to disable traps from having set so many).

In addition, as a general rule, Rangers aren't in the business of disabling traps.  Rogues often serve as thieves or scouts, and so disabling devices in their way (traps and locks) are a part of the class.  Rangers roam the wilds, and while they might be adept at spotting traps (hence Search as a class skill), they generally don't have to disable them.

As for traps the Ranger personally sets (as with anyone using Set Trap) - he can recover them automatically, regardless of his Disable Trap skill.

Not true. It is an easy edit of the spell script to account for it being cast from the helmet.

This is true.  I was going to protest that it would require the modification of a base spellscript, but since we use material components, it's already been modified.

56
It would have to be a change to both the spell and the item, since all the item does is cast the spell.

If I could add a dissenting voice, however, it would also mean that you would be unaware that NPCs had barkskinned/stoneskinned as well.  En plus, I was of the impression that the spell caused a literal sheath of living/moving bark or stone to cover the character - which, vanity or not, would cover up fancy outfits.

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: tis the season

Also, Erik, while some CEP resources are included in our haks, models must be in the downloaded hak files to be included in-game.

So if we wished to add additional seasonal models, it would be something that would have to be planned a couple of months in advance.  That being said, some decorations of that nature are available... and might be used in the decoration of certain occasions.

Muaa-haa-haa-haa-haaa....

What blonde said.  That's basically what I do.

Also, sitting is, in itself, an animation (a looping animation, as it happens).  Due to how the engine handles animations, one animation has to end before the next is performed.  So a PC can't nod while sitting, etc.

Congratulations!

Unfortunately, you can't play her yet.  She'll be eighteen on Febra 18th, 1507 (Mon Dec 3, 2012).  At that point, she will meet the human age limitation and can be submitted.

We look forward to reading your submission.
