NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / new portal options
« on: May 21, 2019, 12:32:23 am »
I have an idea that I think a lot of people would like.

What if the portal system would check for the keys the toon is holding before opening the interaction window, and you would have the following options

1: Center on Minstone
2: Prantz on Dregar
3: Arnax on Belinara
4: Key's destination
5: I do not want to jump

When the character would select key's destination, it would show the door numbers for every key the character is holding on him/her. Selecting one of the number would 1 either transport the character at the portal location of that house, or outside the house, which ever the GM's would prefer.

Walking out of the forest, Eldoran comes back again in Hlint area.

He left his training school to his son and almost everything he possessed. He's getting old but he still in great shape and wants to see the world again.

He comes to Center and goes to the crafting house.

"Hmm ok now i have to make a new set of armor and sword or go get a good deal with some of the guild around here"..."let see..."

First off, thank you to everyone for quickly reporting the bugs and having patience as we work through the kinks. This was a significant update and there was bound to be some niggling issues here and there.

Now some random notes.

  • The old 1.69 server will continue to run for a while as we make sure everything's okay and there's no need to fall back to it or log in on that end to check something. Characters who continue to play on 1.69 will be able to be migrated by hand.
  • There may be some changes to lore to open up some of the areas that are currently inaccessible.
  • For the most part, I will be dealing with the administrative end of things for NWN now. Dorganath and rowana are still accessible but they're more in the background.
  • Project team members will be welcome should you have interest in building new areas or contributing in other ways.
  • All old information has been ported to https://wiki.layonara.com but we need to add structure. Use the search functionality if you're looking for something.
  • There will be another bonus period starting soon.
  • If you're having trouble accessing your characters from the vault, create a test character and let me know the name of your test character and I will move your PCs over
  • The address is ee.layonara.com:5121, we'll also show up under the server listing

A further note on Layonara lore

Layonara's lore is a bit muddled with general staleness as the time has passed, among other things. We ask that you do your best to work with what you know right now. Things may have to change a bit to suit some planned improvements to NWN, so please do your best to work with what's necessary for you to enjoy your time here. The future you create through NWN will still be decided by you the player, but for the most part, that will stay as NWN lore. It may so happen that canon Layonara lore will diverge through other outlets and production in the future, but that doesn't mean NWN Layonara is not true. Much like comic book timelines, it's all true and meant to be enjoyed.

If you have any questions on this or any other things, feel free to let me know.

All the best,
orth

Still working on getting EE up over here...probably spend some time tonight on it.  I did have a question about the old Layo...are we wasting our time getting xp and items on old layo?  Chaz said something about a 26 hr lookback when we go port our char's to EE.  Just trying to figure out how that works and if new stuff we earn on old layo will port to EE.

Thanks

You can gain items and character levels/XP/gold but keep them on your PC and I can migrate okay. Anything else is a kind of a pain in the butt.

Don't use bank vaults nor persistent storage, also crafting XP will be lost too.

I'm also taking your honour here at stake to not do the following: take something from your persistent chests and put them on your PC. If you do this that item will be in the new server's persistent chest and on your character, hence duplicating an item.

I can verify the differences in chests if I really feel like I need to audit, but I think you guys are honourable enough to not try to cheat the system. If you absolutely need something from a persistent chest then please tell me and I will delete it on the new server. Same goes for gold/items from a bank vault.

In the stock rider system of NWN there's the ability to dual ride. I think that this could be a nice RP tool to have on the current riding system. It would also be convenient for those who do not have horses and need a ride fast to a gathering point (which would be in a rp reason too), having 2 choice of riding style, Normal, which would put the second rider behind of the animal handler, and intimate, which would put the second rider in front of the animal handler.

Time for a bit of an update on some of the changes, some are done by me, some are in NWN:EE, some are community enhancements:

  • PCs can now use all three ammo slots for the same ammunition using the =c rangedfocus command. This allows PCs to queue up 3 sets of different arrows to progress through instead of NWN automatically grabbing a random stack when you run out.
  • Many minimap and walkmesh fixes
  • The "grave" system has been revamped. Only the PC (and DMs) who died will see a special marker where they died. Other PCs will no longer see a headstone. This was to avoid some of the OOCness of a physical grave being there which isn't really correct
  • Most subrace and prestige class bonuses are now hard coded, that means if your subrace is +2 Strength then it's not considered a "buff" but rather your character has that value changed at the core
  • Combat modes are now toggleable, meaning if you use Power Attack or Expertise you turn it on and off with a toggle, it doesn't break when you move.
  • The entire polymorph engine has been revamped helping to avoid some of the issues that came up with polymorph/wildshape/elemental shape etc
  • Many of the stock tilesets have been improved with a visual facelift
  • Bartering gives a lot more feedback so PCs have a record of trades in their chat logs, also autosave no longer cancels a barter
  • PCs can set their size to give a bit of a more custom look, size can be tiny, small, normal, large, huge. Currently a PC can use this as often as they want but please only set it with the setting that you want, experiment and then stick to it. Changing of size is logged and we don't want to see a PC manipulating it on a whim whenever they feel like it
  • The dynamic names system has gone through a complete revamp (I even wrote the C++ for the NWNX plugin) so I've tweaked it for Layonara. PC Names show up normally on the Player List so tells are easier.
  • Vendors no longer need to be "triggered" to fill their inventory the first time they're spoken to
  • Whirlwind was fixed

Introduce Yourself / Greetings!
« on: April 17, 2019, 05:46:20 am »
Hello!

I used to play here many many years ago and the impression this place made was so great, that I still check in every now and then.  When I heard that NWN was getting an Enhanced Edition, I wondered whether the team at Layo would be able to and have the desire to move.

I am happy that this looks like it's going to happen.  Few games I have played have been as engaging as Layonara.

I remember battling many a red light goblin, having many debates around the town bench in Hlint and going off on many (dangerous) expeditions.

I look forward to meeting you all

Not seeing Layonara coming up, so I assume its not ready?

Not yet, no! Very soon.

I was waiting for one more contribution but it's been delayed. I may just skip it though, just need to see how close they are.

Here are a couple starting notes for the migration:

Migrating your Characters
If you have played on Layonara before and still have your old CD Key you will be able to migrate your characters from the servervault automatically. To do this you need to copy your old nwncdkey.ini file from NWN 1.69 and place it in the new NWN:EE folder (this is usually My Documents/Neverwinter Nights for Windows installs.) You will know it's the proper place for the file if you see a cdkey.ini file in that folder, as that's the key file for NWN:EE. Once that's done, you will also need to make sure your login name is the same as the one you used on the old Layonara. You will be prompted for this before you login. Remember it's case sensitive! if your login name before was orth don't enter Orth. If you do not have your old cd key and can prove you are the player who once played certain characters, please send me a PM. If you have access to your forum account this is usually sufficient evidence.

Automatic Content Downloading With NWSYNC
The first time you connect to the new version you will be presented with an automatic download dialog box. NWN:EE includes a fantastic new feature called nwsync that means players no longer need to download, extract and install haks. Whenever changes are made that would in the past require hak updates you will now just automatically download the content before connecting to the server. Note: there is no way to speed this process up for the first time even if you already have the old layonara haks. In addition while the download will be large the first time, future downloads will be much smaller.

New Features and Bug Fixes
The extent of the improvements made and bugs fixed in NWN:EE can be viewed in this log of updates at Steam. (some are still in the dev edition) I have also added some great new feature enhancements and fixed a lot of issues specific to Layonara. Over the coming while I will outline some of these features so they're used and passed along. To get you started please make sure to read the updated online help system using =c help

Definitely try to run it on your current system and see how it performs.  Alternatively, look at Ubuntu which it appears NWN EE runs on natively. Then I would use Wine to run your on-prem Office software. No costs above the NWN EE costs.

I didn't have much luck with wine to play Diamond, but I found a slick program called "Porting Kit" that uses wine wrappers but it's all tweaked for the game.  Hope it helps...

Wine runs diamond out of the box.
