Andrew had returned to the Silverbuckle, and now stood chatting with her for a while.  Their small-talk started with a summary of the day's business at the inn, which had been uneventful.  A small bulge under Andrew's coat caught Jetta's eye.  When it began squirming, Jetta immediately deduced that her employer had brought home another kitten.  After she called him out on it Andrew confirmed her deductions, revealing a tiny grey kitten just large enough to fill the palm of his hand.  The kitten's eyes shown blue, and looked at her spread wide as only a kittens eyes could do, right before they settled on one of Andrews fingers and her mouth began chewing said fingertip while tiny clawed paws held the finger to keep it from getting away.  In a word, Jetta decided this kitten was cute.  But then, all kittens were.

For a moment her thoughts returned to the white kitten, Griff, whom she'd dispatched from the world not so long ago.  When her thoughts returned to her, she hoped nothing of them had shown on her face as she'd followed Andrew and the new kitten to the kitchen where it was to receive it's first meal at the Silverbuckle.  Andrew, perhaps too taken with the new kitten, hadn't seemed to notice anything.  As she searched below the butcher's block in a cupboard for a saucer, Jetta was taken a bit off guard when Andrew asked her to name the grey ball of fur now mewling at his feet and attacking his boot-laces.  The grey was close enough to the color of ash, and so that became her name as Jetta voiced it.

In her mind, Jetta breathed a sigh at this new responsibility as she realized that this kitten would need to be trained.  She couldn't keep killing the cats Andrew brought home if they ruined her things like she had done to Griff.  Her employer would become susipcious if such a trend of disappearing kittens continued.  While Andrew left the kitchen to go work on writing a new song, Jetta stood talking to Ash, laying down ground rules.

"Well, Ash, seems I'm stuck watching you for a bit.  Let's make the most of it, eh?"  She stooped down to pet the kitten who still lapped at the milk in the gentle concave of the saucer.  "Firstly, don't get on my bad side.  Shouldn't be hard to stay on my good side as long as you don't ruin any of my stuff."  Ash seemed to pay her no mind, But Jetta knew the kitten heard her voice.  "Don't get fat and lazy.  We already have a cat that fits that bill.  So you need to earn your keep catching mice, bugs, and rats if they show up in the inn."

While Ash went on lapping up milk, Jetta's mind began wandering to ideas for making cat toys that would teach her to attack rats and mice, and not the fine silks Jetta kept in her room.  She could easilly sew together a mock-rat using a rat skin or two, stuffing it with a mix of sawdust and catnip, and adding a 6 foot length of yarn by which to pull the toy across the floor.  She'd do that tomorrow.  For now, Ash appearing finished with her saucer of milk, it seemed it would be best to introduce her to one of Griff's old litter-boxes.  Best to get the kitten housebroken soonest as possible.

As Jetta reached down to pick Ash up, her gloved fingers became subject to fierce teething and strong claw-gripping.  Since neither teeth nor claws penetrated through the gloves, Jetta took little notice as she carried Ash with her upstairs.  Locating an empty litter box left-over from Griff, she picked it up with her other hand and brought it with into her own room, then went back for some sawdust to be used as litter.  Lastly she closed the door before setting Ash down and filling the litterbox.

"Alright Ash, you can stay with me til we get you trained."

Almost surprisingly, the little grey kitten imediately climbed into the litterbox to relieve herself.  Afterward she climbed out, pausing for a moment to shake sawdust of her hind paws, and then proceeding to explore Jetta's room.  Jetta sat on the corner of her bed watching the adventurous kitten for some time until her own lids began to weight heavy from all the days events.  She changed into a night-gown and blew out the lamp before climbing into bed, watched the whole while by those big blue kitten-eyes that seemed to take in every detail and every movement.  Soon after she lay down she felt the blanket distrubed by the commotion of hte kitten climbing it to get atop the bed.  Another moment later and a warm lump pressed against her calf through the material of the blanket.

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: stat abilities versus skills and saves
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:45:13 am »
Here's another question for us to ponder:  If the GM calls for a strength check in a situation where a dexterity-build character is trying to stop an NPC from getting away or something, should the player feel obligated to point out (or remind) the GM that their character uses their reaction speed, their dexterity and their oponent's own mass and momentum in their attempt to stop their target rather than brute-strength type tactics, and thus ask the GM to allow a dexterity check, or reflex check to be rolled instead?

I guess this question stems from my inability to agree with the notion that higher strength equates to higher accuracy in an attempt to hit something as the default operation of a character's melee attack score pushes on us.  In example, the default calculation is to add a character's Strength modifier to their chance to hit in a melee attack.  And yes, I do know that the Weapon Finesse feat allows to add the Dex modifier when using certain weapons instead, but here my point is that by default Str is used.  I can see greater strength lending to increased damage, but not so much increased chance to hit.  You know what I mean?  But that's D&D system for you, I guess.

Ending ramble now.

I'm part of that 10% minority of players who's never really had an epic character....  well okay, there was Amgine, but he permed almost immediately after reaching level 21.  He had a couple really bad strings of rolls versus the Soul Mother in his earlier levels.

Oh, another aspect I forgot to touch upon with the pre-generated characters associated with those hook-story quest lines... in creating the character bio, you could work in bits of lore such as demographic information, local customs, religious holidays and such for the place from which these characters come from.  Help introduce Layonara lore right from the get-go.

I seem to recall a while back something mentioned about dividing up the world into areas between the active DM's, making them experts on lore for their corner of the world, so to speak.  Imagine then, these pre-generated characters with their bios portraying aspects from whatever area of the world they came from, and the players/characters then in a sense becomming living lore depositories, sharing those personal bits of lore with everyone they encounter.  To use an existing character as an example, I like playing with Andrew Reid because he does that.  He adds that oriental feeling 'Huang-Jin' flare to his RP that makes his character stand out and as a result feel more alive and real, and more a part of the world of Layonara.

Anyhow that's the rest of that brainstorm from earlier...

As to the next 'Buckle event, make sure the Wayward Wildside Trio is invited to make an appearance.  They're awesome!

To take Gilshem's idea a step further, why not actually take the time to create 5 playable, pre-approved characters that can be referenced in the hook-story for the new players to use when they come, allowing them to pick a character and jump right into the game?  You could still allow the new players the opton to create their own unique characters if they didn't like any of the pre-generated ones, but they'd have to go through the normal character approval process for those.

For example, using the vampire cult scenario.  The story might tell of five individuals who were with the messenger and survived the initial discovery of the vampire coven, fleshing out some details about each of these five courageous (or not so courageous) persons who chose to stay behind to fight the vampires while the messenger ran for help.  Perhaps one or two of these five were captured by the vampires and are being held for some ritual of nefarious purpose, or simply as stead food-sources, and it's up to the long time players to find them, free them, and help them overcome the vampire plot.

Just an additional brain-storm here, but thought, "Why not share it?"

Don't worry Gunther, Jetta's got Head Councilman Grue's ear in Mariner's Hold.  Assuming the old codger continues his survival-streak and is still alive after the end of the Razorback Syndicate quest series, I'm sure she can talk him into clearing Gunther to work at the Buckle.  If Arelious Witherspoon backs her it's almost a sure thing, I think.  So, you'd just need to hire Jetta's services to speak on your behalf.

Let's make a deal!  :D

If a person gave their permission for this, would the realm of possible sellected works be inclusive of CDT's past, present, and future, or would it be limitted to just current works?

Additionally, could permissions be limitted to CDT's of a specific character(s) of a single player, or would it be an all-or-nothing sort of thing?

Which social media platforms would be used, and could players choose on which of those social media platforms they wish their CDT's to be shared (or would it a be an all-or-nothing thing)?

"Boss, you still need me to watch over the two of you out at the shed too, or should I begin delegating staff to get these holes patched?"

*Jetta asks as if this is the sort of thing that happens every day at the Silverbuckle.*

*muttered as an afterthought to herself*
"Gods, I'm becomming Chief of Maintenance too now."

*comments as well, not quite remaining the quiet fly on the wall, as it were.*

"I've seen men's ears bleed and lines of warriors flee in terror at the sound of a skald's voice."

*her eyes flick back and forth between the other two for a moment, and again she leans back against the wall into silence.*

*Being curious, Jetta follows Andrew matching his stride and slips into the Meeting Room as well.  She chooses to stand to one side of the door, closing it behind herself after thanking Greg, Arthur and Winston and handing them each coin for another round of drinks.  She then turns her attnetion to Andrew and Amaria, watching and listening with a nuetral expression.*

"You know Elohanna will have your head for smoking in the clinic, Boss.  Anyway, there's an Elven lass calling herself Amaria here asking for you.  I left her guarded by Greg, Winston, and Arthur in the Meeting Room.  You know her?"

*watches Andrew's expression as she delivers her news*

//OOC  - For clarification, the Meeting Room to which Jetta has lead Amaria is the room with the long table and all the chairs next to Andrew's office, not the lounge area with the couches near the fireplace.

*smiles in her predatory way at Amaria.*

"Oh, no.  I'm certainly not his wife.  I'm the chief of security here at the Silverbuckle.  It's my job to ask questions."

*After seeing Amaria to be seated in one of the chairs in the meeting room, Jetta moves bak to the doorway.*

"Now, just wait here while I track him down and tell him you're here to see him."

*With that, she closes the door behind herself on her way out of the meeting room and motions for her three personal minions to come over.*

"Alright, there's an Elven lass in there waiting to see Andrew.  See that she doesn't leave that room until he or I return, and don't let anyone else in there either."

*After instructing Arthur, Winston, and Greg to guard Amaria she heads off in search of her employer.  The first stop in her search is Andrew's office, and she knocks before poking her head in to see if he's there.*

*For a moment Jetta continues to regard the woman coolly, then she grins a most shark-like grin with a bit of a twinkle in her eye, gesturing the Elven lass to stand and follow.*

"Come with me, Amaria."

*She leads Amaria to the meeting room near the front entrance to the inn and directs her inside while she asks,*

"Have a seat, and please tell me how it is you know Andrew?"
