Development Journals and Discussion / Discrediting Tyillaan
« on: August 23, 2010, 07:26:21 am »
//This thread will hold all the details on Eleandilethessa's part of the plot to discredit Tyillaan

duchess (Eleandilethessa Quil'lyn) has been asked by the leader (Ni'haer) of the group she is in to mimic Tyillaan with a view to making her suspect in murder/destruction around various places and to grow seeds of doubt in the minds of her friends.

Tyillaan and duchess used to be lovers, so duchess knows her well enough that a masquerade by duchess should have a reasonable chance of success (I hope).

 • In order for it to work, duchess will:
 • create an outfit in grey and purple to mimic Ty's
 • create a bow that looks similar
 • apply some makeups to only partially resemble her tattoos. Only partially as she will not be able to make exact copies, I guess, so if they are partial, part of that disguise will be to make it look as if the tattoos were trying to be covered, albeit unsuccessfully so that a part of them is showing
 • will talk in a stutter when in disguise and use her bow to attack and kill people
 • will use scrolls she has collected to inflct magical damage, especially fire to represent Ty's arcane archer arrows, to further make the attacks convincing
 • she will be unhooded from time to time to show facial tattoos, and her mimic armour will show bare arms and has thigh length boots which show some skin between boot and skirts
 • she will be on foot and will use her shadow dancer skills to evade capture following the deed. After the event and as soon as possible, she will pull her normal outdoors clothes on to revert to her normal self and hide the Ty impersonation
The plan is to attack and kill random helpless farmers and citizens that are easy prey and away from the major towns at the time of the attacks, a few at a time over a few weeks.

She will if possible, leave the occasional severely wounded or dying survivor after the first few attacks to recognise her and give a description based on the above. Robbery will appear to be the motive and will give her a chance to mimic the stutter as she robs a body near a wounded/dying farmer.

The start area will be around Fort Llast and move to Krandor then Haven and without any pattern (she will roll a random dice to decide which area to go to next).

//this is a copy of the original pm sent to MasterJack and placed in here so the whole thread can be kept together.

More to follow once I get onto it.

Just for Fun / Darkstorme's Word of the Day
« on: July 14, 2010, 06:41:12 pm »
This is a new feature I'm trying out... we'll see if I can keep it up.

The basic idea is that, like the calendars you can buy at mall kiosks, I'm going to offer up a word per day.  These words are useful ones that are underused, misspelled, wrongfully employed, or otherwise abused - in a fantasy setting.  I will attempt to disambiguate, enlighten, and expand upon their uses, for entertainment and (perhaps) their future use in Layonaran RP! :)

Or I'll get bored.  We'll see.

Today, however, we're starting with a nice easy one:

Nock

Not to be confused with knock, or Knock, a nock (or to nock) is of particular interest to all you archers out there.

Like knock, nock can be used as both a noun and a verb.  The noun refers to the slit on the butt end of the arrow into which the bowstring fits.  The verb, naturally, refers primarily to the action of fitting an arrow to that bowstring, slotting the string into the nock.

It can also refer to scoring or marking a surface, but that usage has fallen into near-deprecation.

Edit: I should also note that nock is a transitive verb - you cannot simply nock - you must nock something.

Usage:
 • Settling comfortably into the crook of the tree, the Ranger nocked an arrow, her eyes on the path below.
 • Nothing was in sight, but the scout was still quick to nock an arrow, warily peering into the misted darkness ahead.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / A Pox on All Our Houses
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:53:22 pm »
Title aside, this is not a housing post.

This is, instead, a post about pestilence.  Contagion.  In a word, disease.

As it stands, any fumble-fingered-fighter with a roll of bandages can cure what ails virtually anyone who gets bitten by a beetle, mauled by a mummy, or sprayed with whatever putrid saliva those rats in the Broken Halls spit.  Moreover, even if they can't, if people find a nice comfortable fire to sit around for a bit, the vile affliction vanishes with nary a sniffle to mark its passing.

No cleric ever seems to prepare "Remove Disease", and the services of the Healers at the temples go unused.

I say, let loose the scourge!

More generally, my proposal would be to substantially increase the Heal DC required to remove disease, and make sleeping at a safe rest area only have an x% (25%) chance of removing the disease, (and in so doing, set a variable on the PC to prevent them sleeping repeatedly in the hopes of rolling a 75 or better).

Ideally, the Heal DC would be proportional to the type of disease, but Bioware, in its infinite wisdom, doesn't seem to allow any means of determining the type of disease.  This could be circumvented for a lot of cases by changing NW_S1_ConeDisea, NW_S1_BltDisease, NW_S1_PulsDis and NW_S0_Contagion to set a variable on the PC when it afflicts them with the disease, but it wouldn't work for the on-hit creature weapons that currently deal disease.  That said, a default (but high) DC could be applied to any unidentified diseases.

The advantages to this change:
 • Immunity to disease would mean something (since, unlike poisons, diseases have no immediate effect, the difference between someone immune to disease and someone who is not, at the moment, is that the non-immune PC has to expend a healing kit at a cost of ~3 True)
 • The cleric spell Remove Disease would be useful
 • The healers at temples could perform a useful service.  (Hands up, who's used a healer at a temple?)
 • And diseases might have a chance of finishing their incubation period and triggering whatever effects they're supposed to have.

Also on my wishlist though less critical than the above:
 • Make the ability damage from disease more persistent than that of poisons, requiring more RL time to pass, rather than a quick stop at a safe rest area.
 • On a similar vein, make the effects of a Bestow Curse spell impossible to dispel without Remove Curse or a trip to a temple healer, rather than a simple night's rest.

Thoughts, criticisms, compliments? :)

General Discussion / Deep Dwarves on the March
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:37:18 am »
Ever wanted to be a storm trooper?  A Nazi in German-conquered Europe?   Part of the greatest military dictatorship on Layonara?

Well here is your chance.  Introducing the deep dwarves! These character ideas are yours to use take, change, or use as is.  Let the sound of Booted Dwarven Feet be heard over all of Layonara.  Dregar is at peace under precision dwarven rule.  Join the Deep Dwarves to let Mistone and the rest of Layonara witness the might of Rael.

Character Name | Classes | Summary
Samantha Blackhammer | Ranger | A deep-dwarf huntress with a fondness for cats
Douglas Evenhammer | Fighter/Weapon Master | An even tempered old solider who’s only ambition is the mastery of his war hammer
Alex Rockheart | Cleric | A charismatic and ambitious battle priest of Sulterio.
I have included some non-evil deep dwarves so that new players can also join in the fun.  I have idea's for some more deep dwarves... The All'ra strike fear into the hearts of all magic wielders who walk the surface...

General Discussion / Dear NWN
« on: June 20, 2010, 11:19:09 am »
Dear Neverwinter Nights,

I never actually finished your official campaign (any of them), and most of even my favorite modules were left off around 95% completion. No more than a handful of areas from the module project I started were ever done, even though building was the only reason I went PW surfing to begin with. I am a poor modeler and have not given you any shiny new toys like other people have over the years, as with my most valiant efforts I am generally just translating the work of others to work for us. I rarely finish stories, and my scripting in any language is akin to the tourist that greets natives with "the cat is black" and says his farewells as "the cheese is stinky".

I only dabbled with your sequel, and even when I poked my head into another PW I didn't speak with another soul. I bought that nice premium module that I heard was very good, but like other very good modules I only got halfway through it, along with that expansion. Expansions. I've found that the things I love most about your sequel are the models that got ripped from it and given to you. Enjoy!

I did not get you a card, because I hate cards, and also I don't care for wrapping paper, bows, and in general anyone bothering me, and also I am officially 2 days late. But I thought I would say it anyway.

Happy 8th Birthday, NWN!

Eight years later you are getting some of the best content since your release. Here are just a few examples of the continued labors of love on your behalf, to cheer you and make up for my own lack of contribution. I did not even count the last patch they labored on for you, and the premium modules that were cancelled but given to the community, or any of the older content that is still in the top ranks!

NWShader (Ignore them when they say adding bloom to NWN is like putting lipstick on a pig - they should have said gilding a lily. The possibilities cannot be measured!)
NWNCQ
NWN Enhanced
sixesthrice's pretty tilesets
CTP Babylon
CEP 2.3 (the new DM tools are crazy!)
Senemenelas' Underdark Tileset
KotoR Heads
SciFi Placeables
Worms Fantasy Interiors
Sen's Seasonal Workshop (remember when we were trying to make the seasons change dynamically with worms, NWN? That was silly. This is easy.)
Community Music Pack

Lastly, while I do not have anything of my own that is anything of note, and have not in general added to your lifespan with so much as a font, you must understand that with your kind I am a fickle creature. Drawn to shiny and ever dissatisfied with its empty reflection, I move on and on and on from "games," leaving a trail of open manuals and dusty boxes behind me, bouncing from latest and greatest back to Betrayal at Krondor, Mario, and King's Quest, and, more recently, Lemmings. Forget all the others. You are the only one I have been (semi-)faithful to, and with you are the only characters (singular) I've made that have lasted any significant length of time, even when we are called silly for still caring about a game nearing a decade-old and wanting to do good things for it. Did I say a decade? No, no, you are closer to 5 than 10. Forget all that.

So thank you for the toolset, and thank you for Acacea, and happy birthday!

General Discussion / Tips for Bards: How to Avoid Typing Your Song
« on: May 02, 2010, 06:30:21 pm »
Having been asked about how I get my songs up so fast I thought I'd share what I do.

first - set NWN to windowed mode by doing the following.

Edit nwn.ini  (found in the NWN directory) to read thus:

[Display Options]
FullScreen=0
AllowWindowedMode=1

The desktop resolution should be greater than NWN's resolution (for example, desktop at 1024x768 and NWN at 800x600). Otherwise, NWN will ignore its resolution setting and run at 800x600 instead.

It is also possible to switch between full screen and windowed mode while the game is running, by using the Alt-Enter key combination.

second - type out all your songs, emotes, etc. into a word doc.  if you have a bunch (I have about sixty now) then follow these instructions for making a searchable table of contents:

Microsoft Word Help FAQ. How to create a table of contents in Microsoft Word

This will give you a table of contents that uses your song title as the subject line and you can control-click to the song.

Then, with NWN in windowed mode and your song document open and in your task bar, copy/paste to your heart's content.

TIPS:

-lock your document between edits so you don't accidentally type over your song and are then stuck desperately retyping from memory while your Layo audience grows bored waiting for the next line.  Voice of Experience, here.

-something I learned from the Willie the Bard concert; give a little time if you stack your stanzas as I do (line / line / line / line).  The temptation when you are free from typing is to go faster but allow at least five seconds between; people are going to be reading your unfamiliar material as well as everything else in the chat window. (thanks to those who gave me that feedback)

Hope this helps, my fellow Bards!

Layonara Server / Congratulations Gilshem Ironstone
« on: May 02, 2010, 02:50:08 pm »
I would like to let you all know that Gilshem Ironstone will be joining the Character Approvals Team. Prior to his leave taking from the world he had an interest in joining the team but real life prevented him from doing this in the end. However, he has returned to Layonara and we are pleased to offer him this position.

He will soon be graciously donating some of his spare time to working on your applications and guiding them through the approval process. Please join me in thanking him for agreeing to donate this time and effort to making our world a better (and smoother running) place.

General Discussion / I'm Back!
« on: April 23, 2010, 12:31:26 am »
I took a brief, informal, and consequently (and irresponsibly) unannounced hiatus from Layonara over the past couple of weeks, in an effort to recharge.

And I am recharged. *grins*

So PMs in my inbox, I will be getting to you shortly.

Before that, however, the conclusion to the latest installment of the Tradeskills Quests (Armorsmithing) will be running on Saturday morning, PST.  The event will be in the calendar shortly.  So too will a number of the subsequent Tradeskills Quests - check the calendar and sign your characters up! :)

I apologize for anyone I may have left hanging, but I needed the time to get my head back to working properly.  And now, let the games begin!

Introduce Yourself / I did NOT do it I swear!
« on: April 08, 2010, 06:08:01 pm »
I am NOT a new player.  This is NOT my introduction thread.

There is NOTHING to see here.  Move along, move along.  Oh do you see it?  Yes that thing that's over there!  It's very pretty!  So shiny, so shiny.  I think you should try to pounce on it!

...what?

...the broken vase?

I don't know what you're talking about.

It wasn't me!

Why are you all looking at me like that?

..............

Fiiiiiine.  It was me.  I'll be honest for the first time in my life.   Hmph.   But I don't have to like it.  And I don't have to be sorry either!  I meant to break that vase!  I meant it!  And I'm proud of it!   And there is nothing you can do to stop me!

...what do you mean you can ban my I.P.?   This is madness!  Outrageous!  I want some Tang!

[Five minutes later]

Tang is good!  So anyway...how are you people?  Good good.

...what?  I didn't even give you a chance to respond?  Well pfft.  Who ever reads responses to people's threads in this day and age.  I mean seriously.  I'm just here to do that thing you do when you're writing lots of things about slaying vampires and dressing like Sailor Moon.

...what?  This isn't a Sailor Moon roleplaying site?    Nuts...what about Twilight?

...No?  Harry Potter then?

....fiiiiine.  I guess I'll do some fantasy roleplaying.   I'm looking at the Lore right now.  It looks kinda intimidating.    I mean the very first thing says to "Read the Player Rules."    Do you really expect me to follow rules?

Uh...er....um...I think I see a flying spaghetti monster over there....

...Okay okay...I will follow the rules...now to create my high fantasy version of Robin Hood.  YA-HAH!

...what?  I can't pick pocket?

Oh!  Oh I can!  But...I have to have the consent of the other players?  You mean I have to talk to them OOCly?  But...they're kinda scary.  I don't really know them.  And they might be aliens.

...what do you mean I have to and that's that?  Well...fine!  I'll uh...um...ask...for...permission...this isn't doing much for my ego you know.  I played a God in the last game I was in.  The chicks really dig Gods, you know.  All that raging testosterone and um...uh...

....NO SEXUAL ENCOUNTERS?  What?  You mean...no Hermione and Earthworm Jim fantasies?  You mean I can't be an egotistical alpha male that deliberately ruins the lives of people and their families IC and OOCly?  Gosh...this is starting to sound like an actual game here and not a bunch of internet fluff.

Um...well okay!  I guess I'll just have to take my aggression out on the legions of spawning undead.  Yes!  I'll sit there all day and start CRACKING SKULLS AND BONKING HEADS AND FEASTING UPON THE GLORY DESTRUCTION OF...

...what?  I can't camp?  Not even in the slightest?  You mean I can't make up for my inability to roleplay by having a real titan of a character that can pee double-you ehn everyone in just a manner of weeks?   What do you people want from me!

You!  Yeah!  You!  Mister Administrator Guy or Girl!  WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM US!

Oh...and hi.  I'm Brian Black.

Nice to meet you all.   I haven't played Neverwinter Nights in a few years, but I think I'm ready to start playing again.  It's nice to see such a large group of people wanting to actually play a game and avoid all of the goofy stuff that seems to take away from it.

I hope I didn't annoy anyone in real life here.  I just kind of got a little bored.   Boredom makes me ramble, but I can assure you that I can develop some pretty fun characters that'll hopefully have people rolling around the floor and giggling until they pee themselves.   But let's try not to do that this time okay?  I don't think the people that run this place want to have stains on the carpet.

...and I already broke that vase over the---wait...I mean...I did NOT break anything!  How dare you accuse me!  I thought you were all my friends!  How rude!

Rumour Has It / Death of a Voraxian
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:43:25 pm »
*Razeriem visits the shrine to Vorax in Port Hempstead and reports that the Adventurer, Trenton ahh Bart something, died his final death while in battle against the trollocs of the Great Forest. (Raz will confirm the name as Trenton Bartholomew if someone mentions it correctly.)

The battle was won, and with his efforts, Trenton's allies were able to finish the skirmish and not be driven from the battlefield.  Trenton was overcome by superior numbers and was singled out by the Trolloc's attacks.  He fell before Vorax's blessings or potions could be put to use, axe in hand.

His body and possessions are in temporary rest in Krandor's hospital, where they await their final resting place as decreed by next of kin, church or friends.*

General Discussion / Top Tip: Rushing Out - Don't!
« on: December 31, 2009, 01:32:26 am »
So many times it seems after a long expedition into the depths of a dungeon, just as the party is about to leave successfully leave... someone dies.

One of the contributing factors is that, by the end of an expedition, people have had enough and are in a hurry to get out.

The problem with this is that by rushing ahead, the party gets strung out, and the people rushing ahead spawn the encounters around the people caught at the rear. This is effectively ambushing the members of your own party.

Further, because everyone is strung out, the ambushed part of the party is quickly overwhelmed before those that have rushed ahead can get back to render aid.

Another point to bear in mind, by running ahead, the people that are caught behind can never catch up to the head of the party. So if you're at the head of the party, the least you should be doing is walking so the other member of your group have the chance to catch up, thus avoiding the strung-out party problem above (note, if you're at the rear of the group, you should be running. :) ).

Remember, the Soul Strand not lost one day might just be yours.

Regards,

Script Wrecked.

Just for Fun / A little addict fun
« on: December 25, 2009, 04:23:27 am »
Twas the night before the Giver, when all through the server
Not a creature was stirring, not even a char approver.

The dirt heaps were piled, in Port Hempstead with care
In hopes that donations of shield scrolls would soon be there.

The refugees were nestled, all snug in their tents,
And all the monsters slept, even the treants.

Zahid asked for balance; Argos, a knight of sorts,
Razeriem for more women, and for Steel, witty retorts.

When out on the battlefield there was a great clatter,
We looked to find the Dwarven Army out sorting the matter,

And then came the Angels, the Orc Bashers, too,
And all the other groups and guilds jumped into the stew.

They were saving the world, one day at a time,
From cults and cutthroats and gelatinous slime,

They were sorcs who cast, and bards who sing lyrical,
And fighters who want to de-nerf devastating critical,

There were druids who shift, and rogues who are shiftier,
They were wizards who solo, and whose pixies are thriftier,

They were gallant paladins, and rangers who track,
They were charging barbarians, and clerics had their back.

They were monks, so disciplined and so tame,
And they all rushed into action when the DM-run quest came.

The Narrator called out in his bright yellow text,
Roll me spot, listen, search, and hide checks.

The players obliged, and got ready to play,
The natural 20s could see Santa in the real-world, miles away,

They finished the quest, and used their remembering orbs,
And then logged off, and hit the forum boards.

Off Alazira, Hood!um, Off faedanz, and Gelooo
Off Hellblazer, Lord Dark, Off Andrew, and Tod Fellow.

They all got off to update their CDTs
And then time for bed, and a good night's sleep,

But wait, what's this? They've logged on again,
Just to finish up some crafting, for an hour or ten.

It's what makes them, and this server, dear to me,
Addiction, and then some, to the Layonara company.

Happy holidays!

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Throwing Axes
« on: December 14, 2009, 02:55:06 am »
I understand that in a fairly recent update, crafted arrows were increased from stacks of 20 to stacks of 99.

As throwing axe affectionados are already at a disadvantage, as our chosen ranged weapon requires a pound of carrying capacity per throw, it would be nice to see something similar for our projectiles.  Rather than increasing the stack size, however, perhaps reducing the recipe from
 • Nine ingots of copper
 • Two hickory staves
 • Two small molds

to
 • Four ingots of copper
 • One hickory stave
 • One small mold

... for a stack of twenty-five axes? (And similar reductions for more powerful axes, naturally.)

I mean, the alternative is for axe-throwing types to carry around darts, or a sling, or a bow... and really, carrying a bow is for sissy elves.  Dwarves throw axes!

(Also, it would be nice if the price for copper throwing axes at the merchants was cut by three-quarters or so.  As it stands, they average about four True per axe, while the bow-wielding types can have three hundred and ninety-six shots for every one of ours.)

I beseech the powers that be, in the name of dwarves everywhere - don't make us pick up a bow.  Let us stay true to our Voraxian heritage, and hit people with a full pound of metal at sixty yards! :)

Rumour Has It / A Bardic Tour
« on: December 09, 2009, 02:31:13 pm »
*Playing a selection of his songs for beer money at various locations around Mistone, the Ilsarian singer Andrew Reid has been adding a few politically motivated songs for any of the populace who listen:

Pay the price to enter here
A city once deserving
No more laughter in these streets
The Brooding One we're serving

Sign right here, that's good, that's right
You're safe within our gaze
Watching, always watching you
An ear to every phrase

A law on who to worship
A law on how to speak
A law on how the law will work
A law to keep you weak

Under boot-heel of our lord
Your freedom sold for peace
Choice and action hung to dry
Like slaughtered golden geese

Bow your head at morn and night
Don't ask too many questions
Don't bring your gods both fair and just
Worship at our discretion

A law to keep out magic
A law to tax you dry
A law to strip your defenses
A law to keep you tied

Forgotten, now, who he once was?
General to a Bloodstone
Who tried to take the world by force
And carve his bloody throne?

A leopard doesn't change his spots
Nor dictator to a statesman
Keep this close to mind my friends
What came round can come again...

and

Whisper down the wind
The shining jewel of Dregar
Living as an open scar
But no one says a word

Whisper down the wind
Law at such a handsome price
Ruled by a heart of ice
But no one says a word

Whisper down the wind
Ghosts of living everywhere
Shuffling cross the tidy square
But no one says a word

Whisper down the wind
Another public banishing
Another quiet vanishing
But no one says a word

All the trappings of a life but choice and self-decision
All the peace a man could want so long as you obey
The memory of the disappeared is met with indecision
Don't speak too loud don't draw their eye least you to go away

Whisper down the wind
Obedience and haunting fear
Fate decided for you here
But no one says a word...

*His tour includes drinking establishments and free open-air concerts in Leringard, Port Hempstead, Brenuth (where he attempts a dwarven battle song in its native language as well), and Fort Vehl.  If asked why he's singing about the lord of Prantz, he will only say he's concerned people have forgotten who Rael was and what he's been doing over on Dregar.*

Heh, right. Here goes:

Epic levels do not an epic character make.

At least, not in the current incarnation of Layo. Blasphemous, you say? Let me explain.

Levels are not tied directly to a character's worldly influence/standing/impression/status/activity/achievments. Your character could be 30th level and while your friends may think of your character as powerful/influential/epic, the greater (NPC) populous of Layonara doesn't even know your character exists (and cares even less, with the possible exception of the hundred-thousand giants the PC killed). On the flip-side, your character could be 6th level and be credited with saving a thousand people and have his/her name engraved over a castle door. When the king is choosing someone to save his daughter, he'll be more inclined to ask the 6th level fellow known for saving the town rather than the 30th level fellow with nothing to his name despite the obvious OOC power difference.

In my opinion, this is why we historically haven't pushed/provided for (and still don't push) gaining levels.

Whether or not this is how it "should" be, I leave that to you to debate. I know some have claimed that by 20th level a PC should have such and such title/achievement/status, that it just doesn't seem possible that a PC could make it to that level without having worldly status. However, wordly status (in this incarnation of Layo) can only be gained through quests and GM adjucation. Put another way, you don't need a GM to gain levels, but you do need a GM to gain the title of "knight" or to save the king from an assassin's blade or to gain entry into a thieves guild. So I stand by my initial statement that epic achievment cannot be assumed by having epic levels.

I'm sure some folks who read the above went, "Duh." Just as I'm sure some read it and went, "Then why gain levels at all?"

It's rumored that Lana Poetr has been asking around, trying to find people who may have dealt with the fabled T'oleflor, and telling everyone that she's sure this terrible tsunami isn't due to natural causes.
